Around 8:30 a.m. on May 13, 1949, a drum of carbon disulfide fell off a trailer truck when it was about one-third of the way through the Holland Tunnel. The highly flammable chemical leaked out onto the hot surface of the truck. The flames spewing out from the truck caused a chain reaction. Four nearby trucks caught fire almost instantly, and as the fire grew, five more trucks burst into flames.
Minutes after the fire began, Port Authority Police officers began helping drivers out of the tunnel. They called in the New York Fire Department, which entered from the Manhattan side, and the Jersey City Fire Department, from the Jersey side. The firefighters had to work their way through heavy fumes and more than a hundred vehicles. It was estimated that the temperature from the flames was about 4,000 degrees Fahrenheit. By 10:15, all the vehicles not on fire had been removed from the Jersey entrance, which simplified the firefighting efforts. By 1:00 pm, the blaze was largely extinguished, but at 4:20 it re-flashed. Burning liquid flowed through the tunnel's gutters, causing explosions.
The fire destroyed 600 feet of ceiling and inner walls, as well as 10 large trucks. It took a crew 16 hours to remove their remains, as well as that of 13 other trucks that were partially damaged. More than 650 tons of debris were removed from the tunnel by a crew working around the clock. Total damage was estimated at $1 million, or $7.5 million in today's dollars. There were no fatalities, but 67 people were injured.
The fire also disrupted phone, telegraph, radio, and TV connections between New York and points south and west of the Hudson.
The fire should never have happened. Trucks were required to display decals indicating that they were carrying hazardous goods, but the truck that caused the fire had no such decals. If it had, police wouldn't have allowed it into the tunnel but redirected it to one of the bridges. Nevertheless, the driver received only a $50 fine and five days in jail. But the event did lead to the creation of new rules and harsher penalties for those who violated them.
The tunnel was back in operation in two days.
For more on the fire, see here.

Through The Lens (Drabble)
“Brock! Where the hell are you?”
“Corner of East 52nd and 2nd Ave, cool your jets, huh?”
“Better have your camera ready! Score some eyewitnesses!”
Eddie rolled his eyes as he hung up and stowed his phone. Yeah, his camera would be ready – it was tucked in his backpack as he scrambled up a fire escape ladder on the northwest corner. People could hardly be bothered to notice the Olympian jump he’d just accomplished; they were too busy taking notice of the stopped traffic and the sounds of panicked screaming in the distance.
Once atop the building, he let It out. It wrapped all about him like a weighted blanket, a suit of bulletproof armor hiding just beneath the surface of his skin – save for when he needed It to be a bit more responsive. Its milky white exterior, so often considered a color of purity, belied Its true nature.
Fully shrouded, he leapt from the building’s edge, landing on the next one across the street to the south. He leapt again, taking advantage of his forward momentum. The apartment complex he was hurtling towards was considerably taller – he wouldn’t be reaching the top of it without slowing down. Instead, upon his next landing, he took an oblique leap off the east edge and shot a line of webbing to the apartment complex, suspending himself over the street and further increasing his momentum.
Within moments, he was turning the corner of 45th Street at breakneck speed and racing eastward towards Stark Tower. The sounds of panicked bystanders were increasing exponentially with each block he passed; cars were scrambling to get away from the immediate area, and he could hear a distinctive, percussive vwip-vwip-vwip sound that nothing he’d ever heard of could produce.
When he reached the edge of the plaza overlooking 2nd and Park, he needed a moment to take in what he was seeing. It looked for all the world as though there was a small-scale war being waged at the foot of Stark Tower. Armored vehicles and men clad head-to-toe in black body armor had the foyer and half the block surrounded, but evidently not secured – because there was a bright flash of blue and red streaking all around them from various angles.
Eddie silently instructed It to recede back into his body while he stood on the rooftop and fished his camera out of his backpack. The odd noises, he now realized, were erupting from the weapons the black-clad men were wielding – gleaming silver rifles that emitted bursts of indigo energy. The blasts blew holes in the pavement and in surrounding cars and buildings, but they didn’t seem to care; they were firing indiscriminately. Thankfully, there were no civilians apparently in the area. Just the red-and-blue blur they were shooting at.
Goddamn it, he grumbled mutely. Should’ve grabbed my slow-mo rig. I’ll be lucky to snag anything she does at normal speed. I’m probably better off…
And then it struck him. Of course he would be better off not trying to catch her. All he had to do was get the landscape. She would slow down once she was done bringing them the thunder, he could get her then.
Quickly, he brought his shot into focus and began snapping close-ups of the attackers and their vehicles. The shooters were all wearing dark balaclavas, so he was unlikely to capture any identifying images, but their military postures and tactics were on full display. And as Eddie inspected and shot the vehicles they drove through his more powerful lenses, he could see that although the sides had been painted black, they hadn’t been expertly done. There were decals from carpet cleaning companies and dog pounds still visible through the paint, which had clearly been sprayed on. There was rust around the bottom edges of one of the vans.
Someone cheaped out on the vehicles, but not the tactical gear? He took more shots of the attackers and their weapons. Sophisticated looking, very futuresque, except… he squinted. Oh, you gotta be shittin’ me. Although the rifles’ ammunition was nothing to snicker at, the housings had been repurposed from water guns and spray-painted silver.
“Are you for real?” he mumbled, snapping an array of photos of the attackers. “You guys made dime-store Star Wars blasters an’ you really thought you’d go bargin’ into Stark Enterprises like that? Goddamn morons.”
The action was already beginning to wind down. One by one, the men were disarmed and knocked mercilessly to the ground. By Eddie’s count, there appeared to be seventeen of them, but only four were still standing.
One was thrown headfirst into the frame of his own vehicle.
Another was clotheslined.
The third was hurled bodily into the fourth, leaving both in a crumpled heap on the ground.
All of which had taken barely five seconds.
Only one remained on his feet – and Eddie had his camera cued up. He was armed with an above-average sense of timing, and if she was anything like the reports and interviews made her out to be, it was going to be a doozy of a finisher. She’s gonna get this jackass from behind, it’s just what the wall-crawler would be doin’ to one of us, right… about… now—!
His fingertip hit the button at the precise moment she was lifting the soldier of fortune into the air by the back of his own pants.
Eddie laughed aloud before he even saw the image on the camera’s LCD. He had it and he knew it, but now he wanted to see what she would do with the guy. “Oh, dude, you deserved that!” he crowed.
She dropped the attacker unceremoniously to the ground, then hurtled into overdrive again, sweeping every single one of the soldiers of fortune up and tossing them almost dismissively into the back of the largest vehicle they’d driven up in: a repurposed medium-size Penske moving truck. With each thug she scooped, she tore away their tactical gear and personal weaponry, and either crushed it in her hands or dropped it to the ground beside the vehicle.
Eddie caught a slightly blurred image of the last two mercenaries being tossed in. Not the sharpest resolution on God’s green Earth, but he knew he could sell it anyway. He winced at the sound of their bodies thudding into the back. “Oh, man, hurts like heartbreak,” he muttered.
She slammed the door closed, and a pair of narrow-focus energy beams from her eyes melted the locking mechanism, ensuring the truck now had yet another new purpose: human tuna can. For a moment she stood there staring at her handiwork, and Eddie could see through his lens a look on her face that he knew all too well.
Be awful easy to just leave it right there, take all their gear inside, and let ‘em sweat it out until the cops and firefighters arrive with the jaws of life. And Eddie honestly couldn’t blame her if that had been exactly what she’d decided to do.
But instead, she made a point of going around the perimeter of the war zone they’d made out of Park Avenue, checking all the buildings for people who might have been trapped inside and letting them all know it was safe to come out now.
This was where some of the red meat came from, the part that people seldom focused on but which was all-important for anybody in the superhero business. The battle’s origins and specifics would be determined and debated for days and weeks to come, and it showcased the extend of her myriad powers beautifully… a show of physical dominance and prowess. But just as it was in the bedroom, any display of total dominance was best followed by proper after-care. And in this, she excelled. There was a particularly touching moment where she examined the head wound of an older trash collector who’d been struck by falling debris.
His camera shutter clicked more on these moments than it had during the fight. The people of New York, America, and the world didn’t even know it yet, but these would be the pictures they most wanted to see. The greatest among them, connecting with the least of them.
He knew what the headlines would say. “Stark Tech Attacked In Broad Daylight!” “Stark Heiress Delivers Superior Smackdown!” “Iron Man’s Daughter, Defender of Park Avenue!”
None of them would be wrong, and all of them would sell copy. Violence was sensational. But he already knew the headline for his article. Not only would it outsell everyone else, it would tell the tale that really mattered.

Tonight was my FIL’s wake. Despite Bill’s Irish heritage there was what I thought an appalling lack of whiskey on hand.
Friends, family, former co-workers, and neighbors showed up in droves. It warmed my heart. Bill was a lineman for Ma Bell for nearly four decades. When he retired he immediately starting driving a school bus, which he did for nearly 15 years. For 22 years he was also a member of his town’s volunteer fire department. When he wasn’t working he liked to fish.
Bill wasn’t one to stay idle.
That Tonka Truck was my a gift for my BIL’s first birthday. The 42-year-old toy is a replica of a Northwestern Bell truck my FIL drove. My own kids played with it when they were young. Over the years the paint faded and the windows clouded. A friend of my BIL has a hobby restoring old toys. He stripped and then repainted the truck in true colors. The windows got polished clear. He also applied Bell decals.
After the wake some of us went to a local bar for burgers and beers. There were tears. There were touching stories.
Notice what we are wearing in the group photo. My FIL always wore plaid shirts. He wore a tux when his daughters got married. Definitely I never saw him in a polo, t-shirt, or sweat shirt. I think he had one suit for funerals.
But not for his own funeral.
Today he lay dressed in a plaid shirt. That’s how we knew him best. The obituary asked people to also wear plaid shirts or casual dress. The only neckties I saw today were the firefighters who showed up in dress uniforms.
Tomorrow is the funeral. The procession from the church to the cemetery will be led by a big yellow school bus.

9-1-1 POV- Christopher Diaz:
—it’s a sunny, warm 80° F Los Angeles Sunday, and you get to spend the day with Evan Buckley, your Bucky, while your dad has another long 12 hour shift. Instead of spending the day with Carla or Abuela, Buck perks up with the idea that you two should hang out for the day that makes you incredibly happy, an idea impossible for your dad to say no to.
—Bucky takes you on an adventure to the neighborhood park, where he helps you do the monkey bars and pushes you on the swing set. The breeze that blows through your soft, brown curls is refreshing as you soar high into the sky and back down to earth into Buck’s hands that push you on your back, sending you back up high. Buck laughs along with your laughs. A wide smile appears on his face just seeing how much fun you’re having.
—After not as much convincing as it takes for your dad to cave, Buck drives in his Jeep to the local Dairy Queen for a mid-day Blizzard, you ordering the frosted animal cookie one while Buck stays basic with an Oreo blizzard. Maybe they should have some nutritional food, Buck thinks to himself as he goes back up to the counter and orders a small cheeseburger for you and a burger for him, along with a medium fry to share. You and him exit the restaurant and sit outside on the patio tables since it’s so beautiful out, and spend your lunch chatting about the newest school news and brainstorming ideas for what to do after. Buck pulls out his phone and clicks on the camera app, taking a cute selfie of them to to send to your dad. Buck asks for your input on what to say to him, so you suggest “having fun with Bucky!” He smiles as he types just that, reading his full text out loud. “Christopher says having fun with Bucky!” I say this blizzard tastes pretty dang good!” Your dad texts back and Buck reads aloud once more. “Tell Christopher I say “hi buddy!” And Buck, good luck with that sugar high later on.”
—since you’re his favorite kiddo, Buck always wants to spoil you even though your dad tells him he doesn’t have to and you have enough toys to fill the planet earth. Buck rarely listens to your dad, and he drives over to Target to buy a new Lego City building kit that looks complicated enough for you both to do it, together. You pick out the fire truck one, of course, that had a whole fire scene, miniature firefighters, a ladder truck, and everything, which made Buck blush and he tells you your dad would be proud of you when he sees the finished product.
—it’s already 6:00 pm when you finish building and spend a half hour or so playing with it. You two shared laughs and jokes, Buck cracking the majority of them as you play. You and him both start getting hungry as the Dairy Queen lunch wears off, so Buck cooks a 2 boxes of Mac and cheese for the 3 of you to share, the third person being your dad when he gets home after work. Buck asks you what you want to watch during dinner, and you suggest Despicable Me, the original. Buck smiles as he tells you it’s one of his favorites and that he loves how Gru loves those little girls after adopting them because it reminds him of you and him.
—sadly by the time the movie is over, it’s your bedtime. Your dad told Buck to have you in bed by 8:30 sharp, although it’s already 8:35 and you aren’t even in your pajamas yet or have your teeth brushed. Buck helps you pick out a pair of pjs, your gray short sleeve and shirt match with lightening bolt decals on it. After you brush your teeth, Buck tucks you into bed, sitting on the side of your bed as he pulls the covers to your chin and place your stuffed animal next to your side. You look at him and ask for a bedtime story, pointing to the book by his nightstand that your dad or Carla read to you at night. Even though it’s 8:50 pm now, Buck’s a sucker and reads to you and makes you promise not to tell your dad what time you actually went to bed. He only makes it past his 5 page of reading when you close your eyes and drift off to sleep. You feel a small, gentle, and warm kiss from Buck on your head before he walks away and shuts the lights off, with the door shutting next. You grin a tiny bit, thankful to have spent such a lovely and fun day with your best friend.

20 25 26 51 83 89 ????!????
20. How tall are you?
Just under 5'7!! (Although I'm certain I've felt growing pains since my last doctor's visit 👀 fingers crossed)
25. What color socks are you wearing?
Desert!! Fun socks always!!!
26. How many pillows do you sleep with?
Just one! It's a memory foam cooling pillow that's shaped for sleeping on your side (it has like a curve at the bottom for your shoulder) it's the best tbh I don't travel without it
(I have a ton of decorative pillows though lmao)
51. How old were you when you found out Santa wasn't real?
My family never did Santa, actually! My mom explained when I was older that since my parents were teaching us about Jesus and God, they didn't want us to find out Santa was real and think that they lied about Jesus and God too, which makes sense since Christmas is mixed with both Jesus and Santa lol. My mom did teach us about the origins of Santa and where that all came from, though, and of course told us that a lot of families do Santa and not to tell any of the other kids, and we never did. But we've always celebrated Christmas like anyone would, just minus Santa. We have an advent calendar that my mom puts Hershey's miniatures in and my siblings and I would alternate days. A more recent tradition, we also get Lego advent calendars and my brother and I alternate with dad (he loves Legos). We also celebrate Sinterklaas Day (disclaimer: I know Sinterklaas has some racist origins and we don't agree with them) on December 5th (my grandparents on my dad's side are from Holland. Also, we never did Sinterklaas either, but we do the traditions) with chocolate letters from Holland
(They're huge and thick, 10/10, lasts me til February) so we have those, my mom and I make oliebollen (when we lived in California we would go to my grandparents house and we would help grandma make it) which are Dutch donut balls made with raisins and/or apples with powdered sugar on top
and, of course, we call my grandpa and he sings the Sinterklaas song. (Have you ever seen Miracle on 34th Street? That's the Sinterklaas song.)
83. Regular oreos or golden oreos?
I used to love both but regular are the best (double stuf!!!)
But sadly, I can't have them anymore 🥺 I get an allergic reaction and we have no idea why, it's none of my known allergies. I'm going to have a full allergy panel done soon though so we'll see!!
89. Do you like your neighbors?
Neighbors to the left? They're nice from what I've heard from my mom. I've never met them though. Husband and wife and their two 20- something sons who hunt geese (how do I know they hunt geese? They have geese decals on the back windows of their matching trucks) and they're volunteer firefighters. I kinda met the husband once, Sunshine was barking at him while he was trimming his bushes in the backyard and I came out to get her and he said "Sorry!!" 🥺 and then I was like "It's okay it's not your fault!! I'm sorry!!" Very nice.
Neighbors behind?
Mixed feelings sometimes.
Husband and wife and their 9 year old Walter, 7 year old Elizabeth, 2 year old girl, and their baby girl. (I don't remember their names). They're all nice, my only complaint is that Walter and Elizabeth make a LOT of noise (like. Screaming at the top of their lungs. Over and over for an hour. Banging their plastic playhouse with a bat. Etc.) and I've had to ask the mom to tell Walter to please stop making the dogs bark on purpose several times, Elizabeth is better but sometimes she calls Sunshine over and over and makes her bark. I don't have a big problem with barking in general, but when you're the one with the dog barking like crazy, people make complaints about you and I don't want to be That Guy with the annoying dogs.
Neighbors to the right? YEAH!!! They're very sweet, they're an older married couple who have an empty nest now but they have 6 dogs. 4 little dogs, 1 large dog, and 1 giant dog. The little ones bark literally non-stop the entire time they're outside, but their barks are small (unlike my dogs lmao) so it's fine. Their giant dog is my favorite girl (who isn't one of mine) ever oh my gosh.
Here's her photobombing a picture of Sunshine LMAO. She's 1 (they got her as a puppy), her name is Harley, she's a German Shepherd/Great Pyrenees mix, she's huge, she never barks (which is so surprising to me, because GSD's and Great Pyrs, Great Pyrs especially being a livestock guardian breed, are INFAMOUS for their baking. I know where all the GSD's in my neighborhood live because they bark when we walk by lmao) and she's such a sweetheart!!!! She just jumps up on the fence like ":D" and I come over and pet her big giant head and she licks my forearm 🥺 sometimes when I'm playing fetch with the dogs she'll jump up on the fence and whine a little, and I throw her a ball and let her keep it cause we have SO many. Then she lays down and squeaks it for awhile 🥺 an angel.

My Story
Summary: Jensen goes through the hardest day of his life.
Characters: Reader, Jensen
Pairings: Jensen x Reader
Word Count: 3500
Warnings: PLEASE READ THESE- Death, Angst, loss of a child during pregnancy, mentions of trouble getting pregnant, mentions of a previous stillborn. Jensen’s POV
A/N: Thank you guys so much for reading. This is both for Kari’s ( @thing-you-do-with-that-thing ) 9.5K British Song Challenge. My song was Small Bump by Ed Sheeran and Steph’s ( @torn-and-frayed ) Gif Challenge
This is unbetaed, all mistakes are mine
It’s been a long ass day filming, the trailer nap didn’t cut it and I can’t wait to get home. Pulling out my phone, I look at the sonogram snapshot on my phone, the one Y/N had sent me earlier from the appointment I’d missed, and I can’t help but smile as Cliff drives and bitches about the traffic, Jared talking to Gen in the other seat.
She’s so tiny, her profile defined and damn she’s got her mother’s nose. Five more months, five more months until I get to meet our baby girl. I’m so pissed I missed the appointment an hour ago, but Jared had been provoking Mish and the scene had taken way longer than expected. I couldn’t exactly tell them why I needed to go, Y/N and I haven’t told anyone yet. We’ve spent the better part of three years trying, had one stillborn, and a handful of false readings. Even though we are four months in, it doesn’t seem real.
I’m heading home. See you soon baby
It was just this last checkup and we were finally going to tell our friends and family. We really don’t have much choice, Y/N is just starting to show, and pretty soon she won’t be able to hide it. And anyways, so far so good. Every appointment so far, everything has been normal, and Y/N had texted me right away and told me everything went great this time too.
“Jensen, I hope you didn’t tell Y/N you were on your way, there’s an accident up ahead and it is going to be awhile.”
“Too late,” I chuckle, tossing the phone on the seat, staring out the window. She won’t mind anyways, I’m sure she’s just making it there herself, and we aren’t going anywhere tonight, just ordering in and spending the weekend together.
The SUV creeps up by the flashing lights of the cop cars and the ambulances on the six lane, the officers directing traffic to the far lane and around, trying to keep rush hour traffic moving.
I glance down and realize I left my phone unlocked, the picture still up. Jared sees it and snatches it off the seat.
“Give it back,” I try to get it out of his hands but he pushes me away.
“Is this...Is Y/N-?”
I swallow hard, “We haven’t told anyone yet… Not after what happened last time.”
Our first baby had been fine for awhile and then right after the six month mark, they couldn’t find a heartbeat. It had almost destroyed us. We’d only been married for about a year at that point, she’d shut herself off. She had to deliver and I couldn’t get a word out of her for weeks and weeks, I wasn’t much better. It really fucked us up for awhile, but we came out of it stronger than before.
Jared hands my phone back to me, “Congrats man.”
“Thanks, just don’t tell her I told you,” I chuckle.
“I won’t say a word.”
“Yeah right,” I smile, looking at the picture again, “You can’t keep a secret to save your life. Gen will know in five minutes.”
He laughs, his whole body shaking as he looks out the window, “Hey, it’s a good thing you aren’t driving, this car looks like your Dodge.”
My heart leaps into my throat, jumping; Y/N’s Impala was in the shop, she’d driven my car to her appointment today.
As we pass the crash a Dodge is demolished, smoking, it looks like a fucking pretzel. It can’t be her, but my heart keeps thumping in my chest and then it stops completely, seeing the anti possession decal on the bumper. She’d gotten us matching ones as a kinda inside joke.
“Cliff, stop the fucking car,” and I’m halfway out the door before he can, running through the open lane towards the accident. It feels like I’m running through mud, the smoke of the burning oil and gas clogging the air as the firefighters put out the last of it.
Hands grab me, stopping me in my tracks, “Sir, I’m going to need you to get back in your vehicle.”
I look over at him, shaking my head, seeing other officers heading over.
“Sir-”
“That is my fucking vehicle, my wife was driving it. That’s my-”
His hands drop, waving the others off, “I’m going to need you to calm down.”
“Where’s my wife...Y/N!” I look around frantically, where is she, she’s gotta be okay, her and the baby have gotta be okay, “Y/N!”
The officer tries to grab me and I shove him off, heading towards the wreck, panicking. There is a pickup that barely looks touched a little ways back and another car that spun out, hitting the median. No, no, no.
“Jensen,” Jared grabs me and spins me around.
“Y/N, she-” I can’t find the words.
“Jensen, they took her to the hospital, the ambulance already left. Let’s get back in the car and get there so we can figure out what’s going on.”
“Jared-”
“C’mon man, let’s get you out of here,” he pulls me towards the SUV.
I let him guide me, unable to think of anything but her. No, this can’t be happening.
The hospital is ten minutes away but that feels like years, time passing too slowly as I try to picture her face but can’t for some reason, the thought of the sonogram creeping in every time I think of her. They have to be alright, they need to be alright. I can’t go through that again, and I can’t lose Y/N.
Cliff pulls the SUV in front of the ER doors and Jared tries to follow me as I sprint in the doors, right up to the desk, “My wife was brought here…”
The lady looks up, holding her finger up for me to wait as she talks on the phone.
“Goddammit!” I shout, shoving papers off the desk, sending them flying, “Hang up your damn phone I need to know what’s going on with my wife, she was in a car crash.”
“Sir I’m going to need you to-.”
“No!” I yell, “Fuck that, I need to know if she’s okay. Her name is Y/N Ackles, she was brought in in the last half hour, now tell me where my wife is!”
“Come with me please,” an older woman in scrubs that was sitting farther down the station stands up and motions for me to follow her.
I nod, “Where’s my wife?”
“I’ll take you to her,” she smiles, but it isn’t really there, it doesn’t reach her eyes.
“Please,” I swallow hard, feeling the tears sting the corners of my eyes, fuck, I’m so scared.
“It’s okay honey, just walk with me, we are going upstairs,” she waits for me to catch up to her, leading the way towards the elevators.
“Is she alive?” I whisper.
“I’m going to take you up to surgery and see if I can get someone to talk to you that knows more.”
“Is she alive?” I ask again, quieter, jumping when the elevator beeps.
“As far as I know yes,” she gets in the elevator and hits the button for floor eleven.
“What about our baby?”
“I don’t know. I’m sorry, they will know more upstairs.”
The floors click by- two, three, four, five...It’s too slow and with every floor the rotting feeling in my gut gets worse. If I just would have told them I had to go I would have been with her, this might not have happened.
The doors open at floor eleven and I let her out before me, and now instead of rushing and feeling like everything around me is moving too slow it feels like the world is rushing and I’m stuck here standing even though somehow my feet are carrying me forward.
She talks to another nurse behind the counter, gesturing towards me as I look around, there are people sitting in chairs, people flying through the halls, pushing gurneys and yelling numbers and orders. The place smells like fucking death and bleach.
“Come on honey let’s get you set up in the waiting room.”
“I thought you were going to take me to see her.”
“The nurse said she is still in surgery, she’s with Dr. Hanson, she’s in good hands. As soon as he can, he will come and find you.”
“But-”
She touches my arm, “There is nothing you can do but be here for her. Can I get you anything?”
I shake my head, trying like hell to stop the tears as she leads me to a room full of chairs. There is one other woman sitting in here, sobbing. I take a chair as far away from her as I can, resting my elbows on my knees, rubbing my face, I still can’t believe this is happening. Why is this happening?
I can’t think, I need to know if she’s okay, I need to know if they are okay and I’m not going to get answers anytime soon.
“Hey bud,” Jared slides into the seat across from me, “did they tell you anything?”
I shake my head, brushing the tear off my cheek, “Nurse couldn’t tell me anything other than she is in surgery. They didn’t even tell me what was wrong. Fuck.” I run my hands over my face, pressing as hard as I can, “Fuck.”
“I’m sure she’s fine, Y/N’s tough.”
“Yeah, yeah...I know. Did you find out what happened?”
Jared nods, “Yeah, I talked to one of the cops I found after you ran off. The truck hit her, they think the guy was texting and driving, went across his lane, another and into hers and ran her into the median. He was life flighted here.”
“Are you fucking kidding me?” I snap, “This happened because some asshole couldn’t put his damn phone down? I’m going to fucking kill him if he isn’t dead already.”
“Easy,” he puts his hands up, “let’s just worry about Y/N first.”
“Y/N,” I whisper, almost whine and bury my face in my hands, trying like hell to hold it together. Not knowing is the absolute worst part, my mind is going crazy, but I know they would have told me if she was already dead, there’s still gotta be hope, there has to be. I can’t do this without her.
The minutes tick by into hours, people come and go, Jared leaves for awhile, comes back with coffees and is gone again. I can’t blame him, this place is awful, filled with people finding out the fates of their loved ones and I’m still sitting here waiting.
I think about her smile, about when we first started dating. She’s weird and quirky in the best way possible, always saying random shit that makes me laugh. That’s not what made me want to marry her though, what really did me in was the love I could always feel radiating off of her, her passion, her strength.
“Mr. Ackles?” A voice cuts through my thoughts.
“Yeah,” I stand up quickly, closing the distance to the man in the blood covered scrubs.
“I’m Dr. Hanson, I’ve been working on your wife-”
I swallow, “How is she doc? Is the baby alright?”
His face doesn’t show any emotion and I don’t know what to expect, “Your wife came in in critical condition, she had a lot of damage to her organs, broken ribs, severe burns on her arms, but what we’ve been working on is her brain, there was a significant amount of hemorrhaging and swelling. We’ve done what we can for now, but only time will tell. The one big thing is she is breathing on her own.”
“She’s alive?”
He grimaces, “For now, but Mr. Ackles I have to be quite frank, it’s going to take a miracle for her to survive the night. Unless the swelling in her brain goes down, best case she will be alive but will not have any brain function.”
“She’ll be brain dead?” No, I can’t lose her, I won’t.
“Yes.”
I close my eyes, rubbing my face, trying like hell to keep it together, “The baby?”
“I’m so sorry, we tried everything we could but your wife was losing blood too fast and she sustained injuries that were fatal to the fetus. We lost the heartbeat about an hour into surgery.”
“It’s not a fucking fetus, it’s our baby!” I growl, the surge of anger and loss rushing through me. I can’t look at him, turning away, grabbing the closest chair and tossing it across the room into the wall. Not again, please God don’t let this be happening again, I can’t get through this without her, “No!”
“Whoa, whoa, whoa,” Jared comes rushing up to me, grabbing my forearms, trying to keep me from doing any more damage to the waiting room and scaring the shit out of the few people there.
“Jare-” I choke, unable to process this. I thought if it ever happened again, if we ever lost another baby I would know how to deal with it, but nothing could have prepared me for this, nothing.
I turn back to the doctor, “I want to see her, I n-need to.”
“I can take you to her, she’s out of surgery.”
I follow him down the incredibly empty and brightly lit halls, and it’s like I know what’s going on but I don’t understand. My chest hurts, and I feel like I’m going to throw up everywhere and everything feels stiff and it’s hard to move. My feet carry me, but my brain doesn’t follow Dr. Hanson. All I can think about is my wife, my wife and our little girl.
He stops in front of a door, “I’m going to give you a couple minutes and then I can answer any questions that you have.”
He holds the door open for me, and I walk in, fuck. She’s laying here, her head wrapped in white gauze, hooked up to tubes.
“No,” I walk up to her side, her face bruised and cut, stitches across her cheekbone, “No sweetheart.”
I run my fingers over her hand gently, scared to death that I’m going to hurt her. She feels colder than normal and I guess it’s all this shit they are pumping into her.
“Goddammit Y/N, I’m so sorry,” I should have been there, I should have been driving, the otherside of the car had barely been touched, she would have been fine.
My whole body shudders as the sob wracks through me, she can’t be here like this. The shouldn’t be her.
“Fuck,” I hiss, wiping away the tears angrily. She can pull through this, she has to pull through this. Y/N’s tough, hell, she’s put up with me for five years.
On the table beside her there are some of her belongings, it must have been what she had in her pockets when they brought her in. Her phone is laying there, perfectly intact. I pick it up.
“J-Jensen?” Her voice breaks through the quiet and I shove the phone in my pocket. Her voice makes my heart swell in my chest, the most beautiful sound in the world.
“Hey, hey, I’m right here baby,” I take her hand.
She blinks, looking around, confused, trying to get up, “Jensen? Where? W-What?
“Hold on, take it easy,” I push her back down gently, “You’re in the hospital.”
Her face falls, her hand tearing away from mine and moving to her stomach, her eyes widening and my heart breaks. I open my mouth, but words don’t come out, how do I tell her? How can I?
But I don’t have to, the tears start streaming down her face and she lets out a choked sob, looking away from me.
“Y/N?”
She looks back at me, her eyes glistening, “Jensen, I’m sorry, I’m so s-sorry.”
“Oh sweetheart, it’s not your fault,” I cup her chin, pressing my lips against her cheek, “it’s not your fault baby, it’s that asshole that ran into you.”
She shakes, sobbing harder.
I don’t know what to do, how to comfort her, how to fix this. Then I realize there is no way I can, because even though I’m suffering I have her, I can do this with her, but I’m not a mom, it’s not the same, I’ll never know what that feels like.
Her head rolls to the side as she looks at me, but she doesn’t say anything. Her eyes are so sad, lost and she’s trying like hell to hold it together.
“Jensen,” she whispers, her voice helpless and high pitched, “I-I-I…”
Her head snaps back and the monitors start beeping like crazy, but one screams louder than the rest, a constant beep with no change in tone, “Y/N? Y/N!”
Shit, no, she’s fine, she was just talking to me, “Hey! I need help! Hey!”
People in scrubs come rushing in, Dr. Hanson with them, yelling back and forth as they flatten the bed and start doing compressions. All I get are bits and pieces as I back up against the wall.
“Flatlining.”
“Charge.”
“Clear.”
“No pulse.”
“Charge.”
“Clear.”
“One more time.”
“Clear.”
“Nothing.”
“Call it.”
“Time of death 20:52.”
I don’t know where I’m going but I can’t stay here, my feet taking me down the hall, away from her. She’s gone, everything is gone. Nothing matters.
Jared is standing in the waiting room, but I walk right by him, down the hallway a little before I can’t move anymore, leaning up against the wall, breaking down and falling apart. I punch the wall, the tile not moving but at least I feel something and I do it again, my knuckles cracking.
“Excuse me.”
I look over and there is a man leaning on his crutches, his face bruised but that’s it.
“What?” I snap.
He swallows, unable to look me in the eyes and I know. This is the fucker that hit her, that killed her and my baby.
“You son of a bitch,” I grab him up by the collar of his shirt, slamming him against the wall, my fist colliding with his face again and again, “you fucking killed them.”
He doesn’t fight me as I hit him again and again.
“Stop!” A woman’s voice screams, “Stop!”
Hands grab my forearm, and I try to shake it off but then I see the woman that was crying in the waiting room earlier, “Please stop.”
I drop him, not saying a word as I back away, turning and rushing down the hall, I have to get out of here.
I get outside, the buzzing in my pocket making me stop, but I pull out her phone instead of mine, the last text I sent her still in the notification box on the screen.
I’m heading home. See you soon baby
____________
Eighteen Months Later:
I set the final wreath on Y/N’s headstone, taking a step back, my eyes traveling from hers to the two smaller ones beside her. I feel my heart sink and the tears prick the corners of my eyes.
Fuck, it hasn’t gotten easier and truth be told, I don’t think I want it to, I don’t want to forget her.
“I be back later baby, I promise. I miss you so much,” I choke before I touch the top of the stone, heading through the wet morning grass to the car.
I drive to the church I’ve been going to every week since a month after the accident. I’ve never said a word, just sat and listened. Jared made me start going after he had to come get me out of the drunk tank at the police station, and I’ve gone ever since. I didn’t like it then, I’m still not sure I like it now, but the repetition, the fact that it gives me something to do once a week, the repetition gives me some structure.
I take the seat I always do, the one furthest from the door, waiting for people to filter in and fill up the other chairs. The group leader, Darcy, starts the meeting, giving the usual speech, that anyone is welcome to talk, that we are all here to support one another.
“So if anyone would like to start off today, the floor is open.”
It’s quiet for a moment. Shit. She’d want me to get better.
I clear my throat and everyone looks my way, and half of them are shocked. I’ve been here seventeen months and never said a word. I shift uncomfortably, “Hi...I’m Jensen and, shit...I don’t know how to start this. I just want to thank you guys for letting me be here and I’m here every week and I get to look at you, and I get to see you guys, and I know you all have a story and I-I think I’m ready to tell mine.”

Reasons To Use Emergency Vehicle Graphics in Appleton and Fond Du Lac, WI
Finding a professional company to improve the appearance of emergency vehicles is easy enough. It is the onus of law enforcement and other government agencies to instruct them properly so that the vehicles uphold the standards of the state and country while remaining visible from a distance. Usage of fire truck decals in Appleton and Fond du Lac, WI, is not anything out of the ordinary. The company that has been hired to provide the required signs must be well aware of the dos and don’ts. No state authorities would want to have its citizens flummoxed by signs that are not easily recognizable either.
Sure, many fire department personnel consider the graphics and decals to be secondary in the order of importance. It helps to learn that even something as tiny as transferring a design or logo to the surface of a vehicle serves a specific purpose. There is a reason that the newly recruited firefighters and other department staff members going through the training are made to understand how vital a humble graphic or decal can be. Some of the associated information enables the authorities to play their role perfectly and earn kudos from the public in the future.
The “National Fire Protection Association (NFPA)” terms the signage to be a vital safety feature that is a must for every vehicle in operation. The States have an opportunity to differ and are permitted to customize the lettering and/or images, thus establishing a rapport with the local community.
NFPA recommends using reflective stripping on the vehicles to improve the visibility of its apparatus and operators from afar. This goes a long way in averting accidents. Some of the standards that the NFP insists upon include:
· The size of the stripping that is reflected must be at least 4 inches in height when added to an apparatus. Moreover, it must cover 25% of its front surface.
· It must cover half of the cab length and remain 4 inches tall.
· The apparatus that is used aerially must be covered with stripping that is reflective.
Decorative Graphics Used by Fire Trucks
Apart from the visibility and compilation to the standards, the Department is free to customize the design and make them attractive. Such signage captures instant attention and alerts the people on the street of an emergency in the neighborhood. Some of the commonly used graphics that make the state/county recognizable are:-
Vinyl- This is a non-reflective material but is utilized in most fire trucks. The right professional would be able to recreate an attractive design on the surface of the vehicle.
3M™ Scotchlite- This is a reflective material that complies with the NFPA standards of visibility. The authorities are free to use multiple printed graphics on the material.
The best way to aid the authorities and ensure speedy services is to add gold leaf design emergency vehicle graphics in Appleton and Fond du Lac, WI. The detailing serves the purpose effectively and enhances the status of the Department as well.

Safety Signs
Safety Signs - Types of Signage That Create Effective Pathways Safety signs are typically a kind of signage designed to warn about hazards, tell of mandatory action or necessary use of personal protective equipment, mark the location of safety equipment or firefighting, identify the route of escape and emergency exits, or indicating the path of fire. Most often, they are placed in areas where there is potential for hazard or threat, such as within the workplace, schools, public transportation terminals, and other spaces that have potential for harm or injury. They can also be used on properties owned by individuals, such as apartment complexes and commercial buildings. There are many different kinds of safety signs and there is usually a wide variety of types of materials used to make them. Here are some of the most common safety signs and some of the kinds of materials used for them:
A Safety Sign is normally displayed outside a structure or inside a building where there is a hazard or threat. The signs may warn about a wet floor or about a loose pipe. Indoor signs can usually be found in apartment complexes, schools, hospitals and retail stores, but outdoor signs can be located in nearby locations, parks, streets and other areas where people gather. Indoor signs, however, usually have a text or a graphic message panel to give direction to the reader. This panel usually includes words such as "do not walk on," "do not go here," "keep clear of," and "no smoking."
Labels are also popular for Safety Sign labels. A variety of labels are available, including reflective tapes, liquid markers, and magnetic labels. Each type of label has its own unique attributes, such as size, shape, adhesive backing, colors, and symbols. Magnetic and reflective labels are usually placed on cupboards and shelves in hazardous situation areas. They provide a temporary means of marking a location for an emergency evacuation, cautioning people away from a specific area, or otherwise indicating a hazard or danger.
Another popular alternative to labels and signage is decals. Some decals have a static meaning that changes depending on which way the picture is viewed. Other decals represent more common objects or themes, so they are less likely to change. Water bottle holders, highway route decals, and flagpole decals are examples of stickers that represent hazard signs or other safety signs that can be changed to fit a person's personality and lifestyle. These types of safety signage are very practical for providing temporary direction or quick reference information.
Some signs indicate hazards by adding another color to the sign, such as a yellow warning sign or a red traffic sign. Green and orange denote caution or increased attention to a specific activity, while white indicates remaining calm. Flood and other major emergencies are best represented with yellow and green on a white background. Fire trucks, ambulances, and police cars are some of the best examples of these color changes. Floods should be either black on a white background or red on a black background.
A third alternative that is becoming increasingly popular is multi-colored safety signs that combine text with images. Images can include an actual image, or it can simply be small cartoon figures or other shapes. Illustrations can also be printed on safety signage to help bring it closer in relation to images. The advantage of multi-colored symbols is that they help draw the eye to important safety information, while drawing a blank spot in the driver's field of vision. Multi-colored symbols are not always necessary, but when they are combined with clear, concise text, they can make a big difference.
