Fionna & Cake: Flame Prince(ss) Content Roundup:

Fionna & Cake just ended, and since I've obviously been keeping an eye out for a certain someone myself, I thought it would be nice to list out all the appearances/cameos that the two FPs get! With the story clearly not focused on either of them, they got to show up a surprising amount!

I'll put it under a Read More so as to avoid spoiling anyone.

Episode 1 - Flame Prince appears as DJ Flame in the intro. - In the same scene in the intro, you can see a large statue of Flame Princess behind the stage! You can tell it's her and not just Flame Prince because of the 5-pointed gem compared to Flame Prince's 4. - A box of what's seemingly his records and gifts that he got her are sitting outside Fionna's door, labelled "free stuff" :(

Episode 3 - A group of fire people are just sort of hanging out in a field. Two that I don't recognize, and the Lava Man from Incendium.

Episode 4 - Flame Prince and Fionna are shown at a candlelit dinner while Prismo's showing examples of how Fionna and Cake's world used to be.

Episode 10 - DJ Flame has a TON of background appearances, I don't think you could miss him if you tried! He has a lot of interactions with Fern too, and doesn't seem to be in the purely negative state that Finn and FP get into directly post-breakup. He's there cheering Fionna on! :)

So that's 3 Flame Prince appearances and 1 Flame Princess cameo, in a show where the plot had pretty much nothing to do with them. It makes me quite happy! :D

Oh, you watched Fiona and Cake, great!

I am curious, what were your thoughts about like Winter King or first opening? Or like about overall more mature stuff than in og adventure time

So now that I'm doing a huge rewatch of the OG Adventure Time, I will say I adore both in their own ways.

It was really cool seeing the more mature stuff in Fionna and Cake, sort of like the show 'grew up' with the audience, you know? And do NOT get me started on how much my heart was destroyed by Simons entire plight through.

See I never managed to finish the first show, mostly just got distracted, but on my rewatch I can tell I at least got through six seasons. I like how spaced out the original show is, and it makes the really sad shit with like the Ice King hit like a ton of bricks when it happens. It really feels like you're watching all these wacky people live their lives, and occasionally the horror of the Mushroom War reminds you of its effect, through Marceline, and the Ice King, and every character who was forced to live through it. I don't know, it's really nice!

Okay I'm gonna ramble so I'm putting a read more!

I was wondering if on a rewatch I'd get frustrated the way later seasons of Steven Universe made me get frustrated, but it never felt like that at all. It's just been... fun. It's just Finn and Jake on adventures, occasionally having to set down their fun and recognize the horror of things around them, and it's just. DAMN it's just done so well.

I just got to the episode where Finn meets Prismo and makes the wish, and accidentally ends up wielding the power of the crown, and all it did was break my heart. Like I was sitting there, and for a split second I was like 'wow that crown corrupted him really fast!' and then I remembered.... he was like 13 when he got the crown. He was still a child, and when Simon got the crown, he was what, in his 40s? He was just a kid, and couldn't possibly be able to handle or combat the crowns power. It just punched me in the gut.

So I very much enjoy how spaced out and silly the original Adventure Time is, because its such a unique world I love seeing more of it, and I feel like it makes the heavy scenes hit so much harder. With Fionna and Cake, I love how tight the story is and how structured things are. They're both SUCH good shows, with different ways of writing and different vibes and I adore them equally at this point.

ALSO THE WINTER KING, holy shit don't get me started, but I will rant about this mofo

Firstly, I fucking LOVE the Winter King, and I'm really sad we didn't get more of him. I do wonder if the fact that Fionna's universe wasn't 'canon' during all the universe hopping, that if somehow the multiverse will reverse some things and 'repair' the damage. I'm not even saying that because I want to see the Winter King again, it just absolutely sounds like something that could happen in Adventure Time. Hell, look how they made Fionna and Cake just-- real! Thanks Prismo you're a cool guy.

But in terms of the Winter King as a character, and in terms of his universe? I want SO much more detail. Where is Finn, where is Jake? Marceline either left the Winter King or got killed, so I'm curious there too. The juxtaposition of genuine confidence and whimsy, and the mans incapacity to feel remorse or even real deep sadness (him saying 'Oh! The dead one?' when Simon asked about Betty was... holy shit) he was just an EXTREMELY interesting character, and I so badly want to see more of him.

Also dude was just funny. The fact he straight up admitted he thought about kissing his alternative universe self was so fucking funny, and plays heavily into his narcissistic behavior and tendencies.

On TOP of that, the idea of how he ended up cursing Bubblegum specifically would be so interesting. I read online people assuming when the Ice King did his spell, it was more like "I want Princess Bubblegum to love me, so I'll do a spell so she can understand what I'm feeling and then she'll marry me!" but then the 'understand what I'm feeling' is actually just... "Hey, I feel absolute madness, here, take it off my hands!' and might have just been a huge accident. We certainly can't trust Winter King's words about it.

I don't know. He was so fascinating, and the way he put feelers out to see if Simon would feel the way he does (Specifically talking about making an Ice Betty, then realizing Simon was disturbed so he shrugged it off with a laugh, being like 'no thats immoral obviously haha') and the fact that he was so cautious and smart about avoiding telling Simon how he conquered the crown? Like he would be glad to help and teach Simon how to keep his sanity AND his power... but obviously would have never spoken his secret the more he realized Simon would morally object to it.

I dunno. This character was in the show for 20 minutes and he was so fucking interesting I almost feel robbed. I hope maybe we can get some Adventure Time comics about the guy at the VERY least!

Also the thing is the Fionna and Cake universe being rebooted didn't just take away whimsy but isolated people by taking away some of their most important relationships. Marshall and Gumball are already an easy example of this I talked about but like, Fionna and Cake too! They mirror Finn and Jake, so it stands to reason that in the OG reality they saw each other as actual SISTERS who were raised and grew up together and loved each other so much. The most important person in each other's life (again just look at Finn and Jake, literally destined to be best reincarnated together forever, look how hollow Finn was without his bother). Obviously Fionna and Cake still love each other, but it's a different dynamic entirely, far more isolating. Of course Fionna loves her pet, but a cat is a cat, not a sister! You can't confide and communicate in the same way. And in cake explicitly says she doesn't see Fionna as family, just a clumsy roommate. That's such a far cry from how they used to be Literal Actual Family- not "seeing" each other as sisters, THEY WERE. THEY ACTUALLY WERE. But that was erased too. Finn lost his brother, Fionna lost her sister.

Like, with Finn there realy isnt a question of his goodness, aside from like, regular trauma and teenager stuff that gets resolved pretty well

But with Fionna!! With Fionna she starts causing havoc and violence the moment shes in a world that isnt as “regular” and rule-based as her own and its so interesting! Because in her quest for adventure and whimsy she doesnt see the people shes fighting as people, not really, she kinda sees them as npcs or villains to fight, and shes JUST NOW starting to realize that isnt true! Hell, she treats SIMON like that a lot.

I reallly hope now that she starts realizing this, she also realizes how bad the crown is for Simon- how bad Ice King is for him. I think itd come full circle if shes the one to tell Simon not to. Because once Simon hs it in his head to do something, chances are hes going to do it, because he thinks hes helping, and thats all hes ever really wanted to do. I want Fionna to grow enough to realize this and help him.

Chapter 1: A Plan

At precisely 12:01 AM on his 18th birthday, Finn Pearce left his mother and stepfather a note, along with his copy of the house keys, on the kitchen table. Stepping carefully over the empty beer bottles strewn over the dingy carpet, he made his way to the front door. He picked up his duffel bag and acoustic guitar case, and without a backward glance or a flicker of hesitation, walked out for the last time.

At 8:00 AM on the same day, Finn walked into Moonwood Mill High School and instead of heading to class, went to the main office, where he proceeded to unenroll.

It's not that he didn't enjoy school; he loved to read and learn new information. But he was 18 years old and still a junior, thanks to his mom and Earl's constant moving around in pursuit of the next get-rich-quick scheme or on the prowl for somewhere else to live once they were inevitably evicted from wherever they were. One year he had had to move and change schools three times. He fell behind too much. School was not for him. If he wanted his plan to succeed, he had to start working and earning some money.

Next, he rode his bike to the bank and emptied what little was left in his college savings account- an account his father had set up for him when he was born. After his father died, and his mother became his sole guardian, she and Earl had spent most of the funds. There was enough money left, however, to buy a tent, a heavy-duty, high-quality sleeping bag, and other gear that would allow him to rough it off-grid.

The final step in his plan consisted of making a deal with the owner of Moonwood Mill Lumberyard: in exchange for being allowed to live undisturbed on the empty grounds behind the main building, he would keep an eye out for any trespassers.

By evening, Finn had set up his tent in a small clearing among spruce trees and birches. It was still early spring and a nipping chill lingered in the night air. He dressed in layers, though, and snuggled into his new sleeping bag beneath the stars.

For the first time in a very long time, Finn felt at peace. There had been no fighting, shouting, or threats hurled at him that day. The crescent moon above was smiling at him and he grinned back.

It had been a perfect birthday: he was free.
