I've been meaning to learn how to draw Sammy. The challenge here (to get me to loosen up) was to not erase at all (a rule I broke only once) and to not care how the final piece looked, which is how you get the stylization/heavy shading. I like his nose from the side

OK SO Mike is a lab baby, like El (technically he's her brother but we'll get to that). He doesn't have the same powers as her, though - his power is trans-dimensional transportation. Not the best word but whatever. He has two things he can do - one is project, which forms a copy of his body in another dimension (in this case the Upside Down). The other thing is actual teleportation, which is really hard for him and he only does 1-2 times in the whole au. When he projects, his main body falls into a coma-like state. He's impossible to wake up (except for with a drug made by the lab) and his heart rate and breathing appear dangerously low. When he pauses a projection, his projected body doesn't disappear - it goes into a similar state, with the added bonus of appearing brain dead.

In this au, terry was going to have twins, not just El. The other baby was mike. At one of her doctor's appointments, Mike was doing some sort of fetus projecting (this doesn't make all that much sense so just bear with me here) and because of that, his heart are was low enough for Terry to think he was dead. That's why she doesn't go looking for him.

Now for the actual story! Mike (who would probably be numbers 12) discovers his powers when he's ~4 years old. He gets freaked out by something at the lab, and an attempt to run away ends up projecting into the Upside Down. This is where it gets weird - while there, he finds (opens? I haven't decided if he can do that yet) a portal back to the right side up (or whatever we're calling it. The main dimension). Now he has two bodies in the same dimension - his main body in the lab, and his projected body outside. someone maybe (maybe Benny) finds him wandering around looking lost and brings him to the police station, where he ends up getting adopted by the Wheelers. that's where he gets the name Micheal (Michael? I don't know how you spell it). The lab pretty quickly realizes what he's up to and decides to encourage it - it gives them a great opportunity to study the extent of his powers. Since he can't be conscious in both places at once, the lab puts him on a nocturnal routine so that his projection can be active during the day - when he 'goes to sleep' at the Wheeler's, he's actually just pausing his projection and waking up his main body in the lab, and vice versa. He looks tired all the time because he literally never sleeps. Every night like clockwork the lab will inject him with the drug I mentioned I earlier (it's like a watered down version of the chip thing in Henry's neck. I forgot the name) to forcibly stop his projection and wake his main body up. If his projected body isn't already in bed, this causes him to dramatically pass out. The first time this happened was at a sleepover at the Byer's (he and will we're to trying to stay up all night), and Joyce took him to the hospital when she couldn't wake him up. It freaked the shit out of Karen. He ended up getting diagnosed with narcolepsy, which everyone, including his doctor, knew was probably wrong, but nobody had any better ideas. Occasionally he'll pas out in the middle of the day when the lab wants him for some sort of test (or they just want to fuck with him). The party gets used to it pretty quick.

I haven't decided how this ends (I have a few different options), so I'll just go through them in order of season. In season two, during the massacre at the lab, his main body gets attacked. He manages to hold out long enough to give his speech to Will, but after that he can't muster up enough energy to project while getting mauled by demodogs. He pauses his projection just in time teleport his main body to entirely separate dimension. I'm not sure how this one ends - I've been thinking about it recently, though.

The second one is similar, except instead of teleporting, Hopper finds his main body in the lab and rescues him. I don't like this one as much because you don't get the shed scene.

The third one is in season three, where during battle of starcourt Mike teleports his projected body back and forth between the Upside down while fighting the Meat Flayer. The stress of straining his powers so much paired with a fatal wound from the meat Flayer causes him to end his projection, so everyone thinks the meat Flayer killed him. This is disproven in season four when El sees him at the Nevada lab.
