MAGICIAN WALKS INTO THE LABORATORY #FindtheGirl

‘Magician Walks Into the Laboratory’ is a new artwork by Darryl Georgiou and Rebekah Tolley, which takes as its departure point CIA transcripts from ‘remote viewing’ sessions conducted between the 1960s and 1990s.

Remote viewing or ‘sensing with the mind’, involves using the mind alone to see things that aren’t present, allegedly using extrasensory perception (ESP). Using previously classified documents, Magician Walks Into the Laboratory re-enacts fragments of remote viewing sessions, and weaves them into an audio visual narrative; at the centre of which is a photograph of a young woman, (referred to as the ‘target’) who, for reasons undetermined, is a ‘person of interest’. Remote viewing was used by the USA, USSR and GDR during the Cold War, as a method of ‘attempting to acquire intelligence about everything from missing persons to enemy weapons sites’. For example, a ‘viewer’ might be asked to locate a person just by looking at photograph of the individual. All without being told anything about the ‘target’.

The resulting art installation combines voice recordings, photographs, classified archives, redacted text documents and original objects to construct the narrative. The project touches on individual paranoia or global anxiety, and alludes to the Cold War 2.0, mass surveillance, data gathering, biased social/broadcast media and the ‘hauntology’ encountered via aspirations to develop (ultimately failed) techniques for remote viewing and pseudo time travel.

Magician Walks Into the Laboratory features the voice of a CIA agent conducting a remote viewing session on December the 4th, 1980 (at 14.00 hours). The antagonist - or protagonist? - is voiced by former Star Wars pilot and James Bond villain, actor, Jack Klaff. Klaff is a former Professor of the Public Understanding of Science at Starlab NV/SA (Brussels 1996-2001), a blue skies research institute and research laboratory, which he described as “a place where you think things for the very first time”. Starlab explored far reaching ideas that looked beyond remote viewing or ESP and into subjects such as teleportation and even the possibility of time travel. The project is part one of a trilogy of new artworks and radio projects by Georgiou-Tolley & Klaff that explore links between both historical and contemporary geopolitical Cold War ideologies.

Magician Walks Into the Laboratory premieres at the inaugural Coventry Biennal of Contemporary Art, October 6-22, 2017.
