it's not a lie to say that albert and franz are shoujo characters. the direction of gankutsuou is very dezakian and the soap-operaish melodrama is reminiscent of 70s shoujo manga set in 1800s boarding schools with intense homoerotic text/subtext. franz's tragedy follows the same formula of queer pulp fiction (popular in 70s shoujo manga). the epilogue even feels like kaze to ki no uta, in a way! anyway, my bold claim for today is that albert is not only just a shoujo mc, he's an honorary gothic heroine as well!
#gankutsuou#the best decision of gankutsuou was changing the pov to albert#shifting to him = it becomes a gothic story#finding our roots in the gothic i'm sure we could draw many parallels between the count and his long-distance gothic villain cousins#they took polidori's the vampyre comparisons and said:#what if we take lord ruthven and aubrey's relationship up to eleven in this adaptation?#and it worked!
