The Most Difficult Decision of My Life

I have had an internal conflict since I’ve come to BYU-Idaho. It’s been a tremendous stirring in my heart and soul. The decision that I will make will determine what I do every day of my life. I don’t think I have ever been in such a quarrel in my life. The decision is whether I should buy an iPhone or keep the Android I have now. All my roommates here at BYU-Idaho have iPhones and they all say I should get an iPhone.  I felt that I needed to figure out which one is best for me by looking at which phone is: more popular, less likely to get hacked, has better camera quality, and has a better voice assistant.

Most Americans have smartphones, but I wanted to know which phone was more popular. I conducted a survey across the campus at BYU-Idaho and asked random students what kind of phone they had. 63% of the student body own an iPhone. From this survey we can clearly see that iPhones are the most popular on the BYU-Idaho campus. Worldwide Apple sold 216.76 million iPhones in 2017 (McCall). iPhones are the smartphones that are sold the most in America, Australia, Japan, and different parts of Europe (Katariya, 1).

After looking at the successes of Iphones, I took a look at Androids. When random students at BYU-Idaho took my survey about 36% of them own an android (Nuttall). The other 1% owns a different kind of phone. According to The Statistics Portal, “in 2017, 85.9 percent of all smartphones sold had Android as its operating system” with iOS being in second with about 15% (Gartner). Android sold about 1.3 billion smartphones in 2017 (McCall). Android’s main locations for their marketing is in South America, Asia, and parts of Europe and Africa (Katariya, 1). Android is by far the most popular around the world, but I am more concerned about security than popularity.

Downloading apps can be very dangerous because it is a way for hackers to get into my phone. If I wanted to download an app on an iPhone, the only way to do it is through the App store; everything on there was already approved by Apple and the users are told that it’s safe to download. Jack Gold, principal analyst with J. Gold Associates, says because Apple puts all kinds of restrictions on them (iPhones) and they'll check you every now and then. And, if they find a phone is jailbroken, they'll shut you down… Apple controls the hardware and the software, they have the ability to impose tighter security (Mearian).

This makes it harder for hackers to get apps into people’s phones. The details of how Apple reviews these apps are not known (Benenson, 1). This gives the iPhone user a narrow set of options of apps to choose from.

If people wanted to download an app on an Android, they would do it through the Play store and users have a choice of what to download. Zinaida Benenson, Doctor at Technische Fakultat (German), says “Google seems to expect Android users to have high technological literacy and be convinced by rational arguments about security” (Benenson, 1). Lucas Mearian, senior reporter for Computerworld, says that “Android presents a much bigger target for malware attacks and in turn, corporate security issues” (Mearian). Hackers seem to go after Android phones because it is easier to get through their security than going through Apple’s security. Android is the one to choose if I want various options for downloading apps, but iPhones have less vulnerabilities than androids. If I don’t want to get hacked I would buy an iPhone. After studying that, I wanted to know which phone had the best camera quality.

I’ve taken many pictures and I want to know which smartphone has the best camera quality. Iphones have great camera quality and have been getting consistently better since the iPhone (first generation). The recent iPhone X came out with an upgraded “augmented reality front camera” (Segan). The two lenses give you more options for taking pictures. Although the size of these “dual cameras create a sharp, not smooth, bump that you should even out with a nice case” (Segan).  Its rear camera has 12Mp+ 12Mp (2x zoom) and the front cameras have 7Mp (Martin).

The Samsung 9S barely beats the iPhone X’s camera quality. Androids also have the option on your phone that if you shake it right and left, the camera will come up quickly on the screen. I would rather have Android phone to take pictures with. The next question I asked myself was, would I rather have Siri or Google assistant help me on a daily basis?

Having a phone talk to me makes me feel like Iron Man with his voice assistant Jarvis. That’s what I thought when the iPhone 4S came out in 2011 with the first voice assistant, Siri. This was revolutionary when Apple sold this. Tom Geller (an Oberlin, OH-based science, technology, and business writer) says that-

When I buy an Android, I get a friend called Google Assistant. Google Assistant was made for the same reason Siri was and it was developed by Google then put into Androids in 2017. In the test they asked questions regarding command, information, navigation, commerce, and local (Munster). Siri did beat Google assistant in command, which involves questions like “remind me to call Steve at 3pm today”; but Google assistant beat Siri in the other 4 categories. The other four categories included questions like:

●       Commerce – Can you order me more paper towels?

●       Navigation – How do I get to uptown on the bus?

The purpose of these voice assistants is to help people in situations when they are not able to look at or hold their phone. I feel that Google assistant speaks to people more than Siri and I can have more of a conversation with Google assistant. Siri does show you more information on the screen, but I feel that defeats the purpose of having a voice assistant. When I’m lost while driving my car, I would rather have Google assistant to help me along the way.

I have figured out which phone is: more popular, less likely to get hacked, has better camera quality, and has a better voice assistant. I’ve decided to keep the Android I have now and not to buy an iPhone. The most exciting thing about these phones is that they are constantly getting updated. Technology will continue to progress in many ways and I’m still opened minded to any changes. I feel relieved to be able to say that I have made a decision on which smartphone to have.
