Karl Fisher Reagent-
Karl Fischer reagent is a solution used in analytical chemistry to determine the water content in various substances. It is named after its inventor, German chemist Karl Fischer.
The reagent is typically composed of iodine, sulfur dioxide, and a base such as a pyridine or an imidazole. In the presence of water, iodine is converted to iodide ions, which are then oxidized back to iodine by sulfur dioxide. The amount of iodine consumed in the reaction is proportional to the amount of water present, which can be quantified through various techniques.
Karl Fischer reagent is commonly used in the laboratory to determine the water content of various materials such as solvents, oils, and pharmaceuticals. It is also utilised in the production of electronic components, where water contamination can adversely affect their performance.
Other uses of Karl Fischer reagents in the laboratory include:
Testing the water content in food and beverages
Measuring the water content in air and soil samples

Benzene Sulfonic Acid Manufacturers in India: New Year, New Goals? What to Expect from the Market and More…
2020 was a year that was extremely challenging for most companies around the world. Be it the food industry or the chemical industry, each faced their own challenges and are still finding their way out of them. However, with the onset of 2021, there is a lot of hope that the pandemic will slow down, the vaccine will be effective and that each industry will be able to stand back on its feet.
If we were to take the Pharmaceutical industry into consideration, there have been upheavals but COVID-19 has also brought out the importance of excipients and how they can be used for many beneficial purposes as well. It has also posed an opportunity for the growth of this market across the country as producers are finding ways to expand their resource base, strengthen their equipment and increase their output and efficiency.
Benzene Sulfonic Acid Manufacturers in India say that it is one such excipient which sees a great chance of growth between 2021 and 2027. It is an organosulfur which is generally available as white waxy solid or white sheet crystals. The excipient can be produced by the sulfonation of benzene using sulfonyl chlorides, thiophenols, or sulphuric acid. Benzene sulfonic acid is used in many industries, pharmaceutical being one of the most important ones. Many drugs are produced using benzenesulfonate salts.
A recent report produced by Reports Monitor speaks about the forecast for this market from 2021 to 2027. It states that the market is expected to grow during this period because of many contributing reasons. Firstly, Linear Alkyl Benzene Sulfonic Acid is much in demand courtesy the increase in geriatric population.
Secondly, COVID-19 has given a huge boost to the healthcare industry because of higher expenditure on medicines. Collaborations and partnerships to facilitate drug development have been underway and developing countries are using this as an opportunity to expand the pharmaceutical excipient market as much as possible. Additionally, the need for pipeline drugs is also on the rise giving emerging economies a lucrative opportunity.
Finally, another factor boosting the market is the usage of benzenesulfonic acid in the textile and electroplating industries. It is used as an optical brightener. Having hydrophilic and strong acidic properties, it is also massively required in detergents and surfactants.
To put together this report, researchers did an intensive study and thorough analyses of the current scenario helping them predict the market’s future. They have considered key geographics, demographics, segments and sub-segments, uses across spectrums and much more. Leading excipient manufacturers like Finar often refer to such reports before planning the way ahead for their company.

M-CRESOL AS AN IMPORTANT PRESERVATIVE AND ANTI-MICROBIAL AGENT, ITS DRAWBACKS AND MORE
Pharmaceutical preparations require many different excipients to help them get the right product as the result. One of these excipients is meta-cresol (or m-cresol) which has the ability to be an anti-microbial agent as well as a preservative. Having these dual qualities plays in its favour because scientists require both these factors in preparing a protein formulation.
Meta cresol manufacturers in India have shared that there are many different factors that are looked at by pharmaceutical companies before they select an antimicrobial preservative. Some of them are
-  Potent compatibilities and incompatibilities with the protein
-  Potent compatibilities and incompatibilities with the processing materials used in the preparation
-  Packaging Materials
-  Other formulation ingredients of the agent
Only once an agent meets these requirements depending on the pharmaceutical protein formulation that is being prepared, it is selected.
Meta-cresol is an excipient that aids in the multi-dose protein formulations because of its ability to reduce the risk of microbial growth after the first dose of the product vial is removed. It is critical that the shelf-life of these protein formulations is about 18-24 months to make them economically viable for the producers. Meta-cresol helps in achieving this shelf-life.
Secondly, m-cresol is a globally accepted anti-microbial agent, which is difficult to find considering the different testing methods and their criteria that exist in different parts of the world. Meta cresol meets the acceptance criteria in the preservative-efficacy testing (PET), the European Pharmacopoeia (EP) and the United States Pharmacopeia (USP).
Also, one-third of the total pharmaceutical formulations are believed to be multi-dose. In order to maintain the economic viability, safety during preparation and patient compliance, protein formulations require the appropriate anti-microbial preservatives. These formulations are used for various vaccine applications, therapeutic applications, unique treatments for different critical human diseases, etc. M-cresol is considered to be an effective antimicrobial preservative keeping all these aspects in mind.
However, it does have its limitations as well. Firstly, it has shown to cause protein aggregation, which is commonplace in most preservatives. Protein therapeutics find the presence of aggregates undesirable and inconvenient as they can cause immunogenic reactions or any adverse effects when the drug is administered. Additionally, while there are many methods that are believed to detect aggregation of proteins, each come with their own unique advantages and disadvantages.
Secondly, there is still quite some ambiguity regarding the fundamental physical mechanisms underlying these preservative-induced aggregations. There is yet to be a mechanistic understanding of these processes which will help producers select the right anti-microbial preservative, be it for drug deliveries or multi-dose protein formulations.
However, despite its drawbacks, leading companies like Finar have shared that meta cresol is the preferred excipient they use in their formulations’ production. While benzyl alcohol does prove to be an option as well, it does not meet the global concentration criteria. Additionally, there is a risk of anaphylactic shock that comes with the usage of parabens. Meta-cresol doesn’t have these risks and has seen much growth in protein formulations.
