Thank you for all the love on my last post, really means a lot to me! If you’re reading on AO3 Chapter 5 should be coming out soon I’m just taking my sweet time lmao.
Masterlist
Chapter Two; Sweet Relief
Sometimes Ben follows her home. It isn’t creepy. He wants to make sure that she gets home safe. There are creeps in Texas, especially when you’re a twenty-year-old girl. Country boys that would stop at nothing just to get a taste of her. He knows that she’d be grateful. He gives up his free time to make sure that she is safe. Ben is a gentleman. He just wants to make sure that no one follows her home. That she’s safe .
He stands on the curb, just about hidden by the van opposite her apartment, watching as she leaves for work. Eleven o’clock. It’s a Monday. She wears her brown knit jumper and Ben’s eyes trail to her shoulder as she walks, seeing the bare skin that drove him wild.
Her apron is slung in her hand. She hums as she walks. He waited until she walked round the corner before he stalked over to her door, turning the handle. Locked. Good girl, Ben thinks, can never be too careful.
He reaches in his pocket for the pin he’d acquired, moving it between his thumb and index finger with a shaky grip. His heartbeat thumped in his ears, deafening the world around him. All emotions were muted, distant now, all except excitement. He’s waited so long for the right moment. And he’s got it. Sliding the pin into the lock, turning it and shuffling until he heard that click. It sent shivers down his spine.
Taking a sharp breath before walking into the small studio apartment, the smell hit him before anything else did. The gourmand vanilla smell that clung to her skin was far more intense when he stood in her home, like it was being pumped through an air vent just to entice him. To lure him in. Mesmerise him.
He shuddered as he took it in, softly shutting the door behind him. Finally here. In her apartment. So long had he waited for this moment. Three months since the day he first met her. That hazy autumn day was now a distant memory. Now she was his.
He walked into the kitchen area, looking up at the pots and pans that hung above the countertop, swinging like she’d just washed them and hung them up. His fingers traced the cold marble, looking over the fridge, which was decorated with magnets.
He smiled as he glanced over them, a photograph of her and her friend in a booth, probably back in Seattle he thought, a small whiteboard with a pen that listed the shopping she needed to get that week, eggs, vanilla extract, oat milk. There was a magnet which read Texas, and beneath it, a postcard.
He picked it up, remembering the position it was in so he could return it to its former place. An image of Pike Place Market, with cursive writing written on the back. Please come back soon to visit! We miss you so damn much. Tell Peter we love him, much love Lela, Ellie & Will. He slipped it back under the magnet, peeking at the last one, which was a photo of her as a kid. She wore red rain boots and a blue mac, soaked with rain and mud.
He’d never seen so many plants in such a small space. Some were hanging from the ceiling, placed on windowsills, some were standing tall in big planters, reaching the mid-wall. She had a green thumb. That’s good. She would love his family’s ranch. Ben worked on the land, planting his own fruit and vegetables for harvest, looking after the horses and the chickens. He’d supply produce for local farmers’ markets.
A small table was placed against the wall, wicker table matts placed on both sides, though there was only one chair. A basket of fruit sat in the centre, filled with peaches, apples and mandarins. A few paintings hung on the wall, some were Matisse and others were children’s drawings. He figured she painted them as a kid. Sentimental, he noted.
He couldn’t fight the grin that slipped onto his face. Being in her apartment just told him how right he was about her, how lovely she was. How caring she was. The postcards, the art she made as a child, the recipes that littered the kitchen counters. And the bookcase filled with patisserie books, baking books and home-style cooking. He was infatuated with her; now more than ever.
He wandered to the sofa, slate grey, littered with a few pale green pillows and a mustard yellow throw. It was clear she spent a lot of time on it. The left cushion, sunken in more than the right, showing that she liked to sit in front of the window that showed the neighbourhood.
Light drifted in and hit the coffee table. He ran his hand over the top, a warmth still lingering on the seat. It was breathtaking for Ben. To be so close to her.
The coffee table has a mug placed on it, stains from where she had picked up her coffee too quickly or put it down too harshly.
He brought the mug to his plump lips, pressing them against the stoneware to get any hint of her presence. Her mouth. It was too much to handle. His grip tightened around the handle, any more pressure and it would’ve cracked under his hand. He’d feel her lips someday soon. If he were smart about it. If he played it cool. Proceeding to place it back onto the table, restraining himself.
His erection was already present in his pants, tightening the denim material around him.
The space was cosy. Lamps littered the room. He knew she liked dim lighting. Hated the harsh fluorescents of overhead light bulbs. She always tried to keep the store full of natural light instead of artificial light, and if she had to turn the light on, they’d be as low in power as she could manage.
He paced to the bed, which sat opposite the sofa. A beige knit throw draped over the duvet, tucked in from making the bed that morning. Now, his heartbeat had increased to maximum speed. She’d placed candles on the bedside table. Some were vanilla, matching her smell, and the rest were jasmine. Mellow scents seemed to be her favourite. Sweet musks.
He couldn’t resist it any longer. He laid down on the bed, making sure his boots didn’t contact her soft covers, burying his head into one of the pillows. Sweet relief. She was his drug. Her smell calmed him like no other and made him feel weightless, whilst also remaining provocative and tempting.
Smelling where she slept and relaxed, gripping the pillow in his large hand to nuzzle further into it. He knew she would be able to smell his cologne all over the sheets. But he knew she’d like it. Might even make her like him more if she could smell him next time when he came into the bakery. Comfort might arise from his smell.
He couldn’t wait to comfort her, have her wrap around him and cling onto him as he soothed her of her troubles, supported her. Delving into the soft blankets, clutching one pillow and snuggling with it, pretending that it was her for a moment.
Running a hand through his hair, looking over to the left, towards the nightstand, where a few books piled on top of each other. Kafka On The Shore, Where The Crawdad Sings, Play It As It Lays.
Ben couldn’t wait for her to read to him. He imagined them being in her bed, a candle flickering next to them, the room just light enough for her to read the pages to him. He’d hold her in his arms, she’d fall asleep against his chest and she’d be frustrated with herself for losing the page. But he’d remind her she could read the same newspaper to him for fifty years and he’d never get bored with listening to her voice, the smooth cadences, the perfect tone, the femininity.
Flipping himself over, so that he stared into the ceiling. Fine cracks ran through it, paint flaking and peeling. He got up, though he didn’t want to. He laid there for two hours, in a daze, thinking about her and all the things that they’d do together, and it still felt like mere seconds. Running his eyes over the bras that lay on the floor, he’d help her clean up.
He’d do all her laundry, he’d cook, he’d help her do all her work, he’d pick her up from the bakery to make sure she was safe, he’d try out all of her baking experiments. He could see her baking something bad and them laughing about it, Ben trying to act like it wasn’t that bad. They’d be so good for each other.
Raising to reach her laundry basket. She had placed a pair of lace white underwear on top. Jackpot. Feeling the tempting material, savouring the texture before raising it to his nose. His deep, guttural moan raised from his chest as he took in her musk. She smelt tastier than he could have ever imagined.
He slipped them into his pocket for later.
He hummed a tune as he walked into her bathroom, the only place that wasn’t open for his gaze in her studio. Pale green tiles lined the walls, complemented by the pale white shower curtain, and the plants that were plotted on the windowsill, flourishing in the humid environment, small pink flowers blooming.
He felt the cold taps under his fingers, grasping the bar of soap—he eyed her toothbrush with hesitation, wondering if he should.
He shrugged to himself. She wouldn’t know. And he knew she wouldn’t mind, knowing that they were going to share saliva in the future. He grasped the wooden toothbrush with excitement, looking at the pink and white fibres in anticipation. Running it across his teeth, eyeing the brush in the clouded mirror, hot with his breath. Savouring the feeling of something she’d touched, tasted, had in her own mouth. He couldn’t wait to feel her soft lips against his own, how he’d melt under her embrace.
He sighed before placing it back into the pot that sat above the sink, hooked into the wall. Returning to the bed and laying down again, feeling the soft cotton beneath him. Groaning at the sensation of his erection grinding against his pants. She made him so sensitive, no one had ever tempted Ben. Not to this level. Never. He found people unbearable. He didn't do well in social situations. Trying to find the right words.
Once in a blue moon, he’d go with them to a bar, The Moon and The Moth, in the town centre, and he’d listen; sometimes he’d put in his two cents, but other than that he didn’t pay attention to anyone. Only her. Every person he would come into contact with only reminded him of how he wished to be with her instead of him.
Ben palmed himself through his jeans, eyes rolling back as he did so, running a hand through his hair.
He couldn’t do that here. He isn’t a creep. He wouldn't do that in her home. He couldn’t. Ben isn’t a creep. Rising from the bed to look at her desk, cluttered with books which had bookmarks peeking from the pages, plants, incense packets, a pot of pens. But the most intriguing item is the laptop that sat, telling Ben to turn it on.
Flipping up the screen, hoping and praying to some higher power that it wouldn’t have a password, and to Ben’s luck, it didn’t. A huff of relief escaped his throat as he inspects the home screen. A picture of her and a friend sat on a bed in a goofy pose with one of the photo booth filters fixed on them.
His heart swelled. The face she pulled every time he’d make an awkward joke or when they’d flirt. Though, the most encapsulating thing about the image was her lack of sweater—or shirt—sat in a pretty sage green bralette, nipples just about visible.
Stop it, he thought to himself, tearing his eyes away. He couldn’t risk edging the member that was fighting so hard to be teased, not right now. Clicking on a folder titled Seattle.
He flicks through the image with a grin. God, she looked so happy, with all her friends, joking around and seemingly not being able to hold back her laughter in most of the images. Photos taken in high school, where she appeared nerdy.
They would’ve been friends in high school, Ben thought. In the Seattle aquarium where she posed like a fish, sucking her mouth into a pout, Pioneer Square, holding a huge sack of mandarins and photos of her and her mum. He assumed; the woman looked a lot like her.
Ben studied how she typed her messages out on iMessage, just in case. In case he lost control at some point. In case she refused him and he had to take matters into his own hands. But that won’t happen, he reminded himself. He is a patient man, and besides, he knew she liked him too.
His heart dropped when he heard a sound at the door. Two o’clock. She shouldn’t have been home yet. Her shift usually finishes at around six o’clock. Why was she coming home so early? She’d had to shut the bakery for the day to come home this early. Did she know he was there?
Ben quickly shut the laptop, closing down the tabs he opened just to be sure there was no evidence left, climbing up from the chair and smoothing out the covers on the bed to look like he’d never been there. The keys jingled in the door, making his throat swell, hurrying over to the wardrobe against the wall next to her desk. Climbing into it, focusing on making his breath lighter so it wasn’t audible. Reminding himself that she wouldn’t see him, preventing a panic attack that was swarming in his brain.
There is a slither in the doors. He can see her slipping off her shoes and placing her apron on the kitchen counter with shaky hands. Her eyes were puffy and red, glazed over with tears that spilled down her flushed cheeks. Ben’s heart beat increases at the sight. He wants to hold her, comfort her, console her.
Watching as she trails to the bed with hunched shoulders, lifting her phone from her pocket and typing something, raising her hand to wipe down her face. She looks so soft, Ben thought. So beautiful, sat surrounded by duvets and pillows with her flushed face tear-stained.
A ring tone exploded from her phone, making Ben jump slightly, not expecting it. But she clearly did, raising the phone to her ear after accepting the call. It pained him when he heard a sob escape her lips. Breath hitched in her throat as she tried to utter words.
“He’s in palliative care. They don't know how long he will be there, but it looks bad.” Her voice was hoarse, obviously sore from crying. Oh.
Ben watches her talk and sob for another fifteen minutes on the phone, ignoring the instinct to lie in bed with her and stroke his fingers through her hair, watching as her eyes flutter shut with his tender touch. Instead, she ends the phone call and cries herself to sleep, all alone.
When he’s sure that she’s dead asleep, no longer grasping at being awake, he steps out of the wardrobe he’d been hiding in. Glancing over her face that is pressed into the soft pillow he’d been laying on just over an hour ago.
Her hair covers some of her face, but he can still see her tear-stained cheeks and red nose. His eyes moved down to her neck, looking at the cleavage that was on display through her position.
He took a deep breath before leaning down to kiss her on the forehead, inhaling the scent of her hair. It wouldn’t be long now.

so, uh, @outervvorlds posted an Outer Worlds Ask Meme for everyone’s captains and since i am a menace, stuck at home with a broken foot with nothing better to do, i did the whole damn thing myself so uhhhh here
Basics! Name, age, personality, etc. What do they look like? Are they a new or old oc?
Her name is Izumi Tanaka, but she goes by Izzy in this universe. She’s a 26 year old diva and flirt from a bad past on earth. She likes to make the joke that she likes “looking like a prostitute, but the nice ones, the ones you have to call a number for”. She’s mixed race, mostly Japanese but also African, German, and many other things. She’s a lightskin WOC with green eyes, long wavy black hair, and a shit ton of freckles. She’s very conventionally attractive(high cheekbones, tiny nose, large lips, almond shaped eyes) and she uses it to her advantage at every opportunity. She is an old OC from One Piece!
What are their attributes, perks, and flaws?
No flaws yet as of my current playthrough with her, but she’s very speech-oriented. She has a high Charm and Temperament, but she’s also skilled in melee, particularly two-handed, as well as being a talented engineer. She sucks at sneak, which is hilarious bc she’s also a chronic kleptomaniac.
What do they believe in?
She comes across as very critical of any particular ideology, but when she’s drunk it becomes more apparent that she just asks a lot of questions bc she wants to know everything before committing to something. Doesn’t stop her from siding with Dr. Welles with no information, since he did something for her by waking her up from hibernation.
How did they react to becoming Captain of the Unreliable? Are they much of a leader?
She was mostly just excited to have a ship. She originally intended to just run a solo ship like Hawthorne had, but she also loves to have people around, being an extrovert. She is flying by the seat of her pants when it comes to leadership, but so far bc of her extensive ability to bullshit her way through everything, she seems to be taking the role well.
What was their life like before being iced?
She grew up in a community similar to Byzantium - rich, snobby, and seedy. She was abused by her parents, and given to other high-society types by them to abuse for more money. She eventually snapped and killed her family and set their mansion ablaze to hide the evidence. As she was still a minor at the time and had no other living relatives, she was sent to an orphanage where she met her life-long friend Corona Nova(another imported One Piece OC of mine!), also known as Coco. The two eventually left to look for Coco’s missing younger sister, and became homeless. Izzy developed a drug problem and turned to merc work, partially for drug money and partially to kill the rest of those who’d abused her as a child. When the last one died, not by her hand but of old age, she had a come to jesus moment and got clean from drugs. She also discovered she had a love of mechanical engineering, getting a job at a local shop. It was there that she met Killer, a man she’d eventually end up in a “relationship” with; they weren’t exclusive, but they would actively discourage each other from being with anyone else. While she was working out how to love someone like a normal human being, he was killed. She never dated after him, and several years later, she signed onto the Hope after being tired of life on earth.
Did they have any family before becoming Captain? Do they think their crew as family?
She had found family in Coco and Calli, a mutual friend of all of theirs who was a occult practitioner named Sai, Killer, as well as her mercenary crew. At first she keeps the Unreliable crew at a friendly but extensive arm’s length, but by the end of it all she ends up considering the crew a family.
What’s their fighting style? Who do they bring along?
She is a SUCKER for 2-handed melee, especially hammers. ESPECIALLY the Prismatic Hammer. She’s also decent at sniping, but she sucks at stealth so she’s not a sneaky sniper. She always has Felix with her, and then it’s usually between Max and Nyoka.
Is Spacer’s Choice their only choice? What do they think of the corporations? She fucking hates the corporations, but tries to be nice to pretty much everyone she meets who’s not a direct Board pawn. She ends up being well liked by most people controlled by the corporations, which tends to give her an unwantedly high reputation with them.
What do they think of the factions? Are they liked or disliked by any? By the end of the story, she’s liked by most factions except the Board and the corps. She’s revered by the Groundbreaker, most of Monarch, and pretty much everywhere except Byzantium folk.
What’s their favourite place in Halcyon? Least favourite? Favorite place is Monarch and anywhere on Terra 2 except Byzantium. She fucking despises Byzantium, it reminds her of her childhood.
Do they have a favourite alien creature? She dislikes most of them, since they mostly want to eat her. She thinks sprats are cute but isn’t above killing them to get their pelts for money.
Did they save The Hope?
She did, and even though she cried over it, she took all of the whatever the fuck its called that Phineas has you steal from Byzantium to save them. She hated that she had to kill all those innocent people, but she knew they were already dead since the Board didn’t have any plans to wake them, and didn’t know how besides. It still did a number on her, though.
What do they want to do afterwards? - but do they get a happy ending? Her original reasoning for getting on board the Hope was to get as far away from “civilized” society as possible, and make a private life for herself. But by the end, all she wants is to continue to help people with Felix, which she does. She’s finally happy and at peace with her past, so I’d say she got a happy ending.
What do they think of the companions? Friendships, crushes, dislikes, etc. She loves all her companions like family by the end, but she did not care for Ellie in the beginning, and she was very wary of Max, mostly bc his drive to complete his goal, no matter the cost, which reminds her of herself in the thick of her personal revenge against her abusers. She found Parvati to be sweet if naive, but she really fell into favor with Nyoka and Felix, and Max after his drug trip. She’s head over heels for Felix, and ends up with him after her kidnapping on Monarch.
How do the companion quests go? She sets Parvati up with Junlei, helps Max become a Philosophist, helps Ellie get back at her parents. She cries with Nyoka over finding out her merc crew left the rest of them behind, and she doesn’t trust Clyde from the beginning, with the way he treats Felix. She doesn’t chastise him for being too trusting though.
What’s their love language? She’s pretty unsure of this herself, being that she’s never been in a normal, stable relationship, but she knows she loves to get gifts for her loved ones. She gets all of the crew anything they ever want. She also just loves to spend time with her loved ones, even just being in the same room doing separate things makes her happy.
Are they in a relationship? Do they want to be? She ends up in a relationship with Felix by the end. She’s always joked that she’s allergic to commitment, but she finds herself wanting to spend all of her free time with Felix, and even though she’s naturally a cuddly person, she’s extra-cuddly with him. She ends up realizing “oh shit, i like him way more than i intended to” at some point during her trip.
How to win them over? She’s more motivated by fun experiences and flattery than money, although she does like having bits for buying as much booze and cigs as she wants. Romantically, she enjoys people with a sense of humor, but who can be real. She loves Felix bc he’s 100% authentic at all times, says and does exactly what he wants… And because she loves how dumb he acts/is.
How to break their heart?
It’s very rare for her to let someone get under her skin long enough to break her heart, but she’s been fighting all her life to prove to herself that even though she’s a murderer, she is still a good person, so someone telling her otherwise stings pretty bad.
How did those cows get onto their ship?? She ordered them for their wool. She’s very into fashion but HATES spacer fashion, so she tried her hand to shear their wool and spin it and make something out of it. Results haven’t been good but she keeps trying.
A song that reminds you of them, Bad at Love by Halsey is a big one, I by Kendrick Lamar, I Like It and Be Careful by Cardi B. Any big party banger type song too, Izzy’s a party animal.
Three random facts about them.
-she’s a crazy chain smoker. She steals cigarettes more often than anything else, save for ship decorations. -she had a really shitty punk band on earth. The crew manages to recover some audio recordings(long story, it’ll be in the fic). Felix is the only one who enjoys it. Parvati tries to say something nice. Everyone else gives her all the shit for it. -if given the choice, she would never wear a proper shirt. She loves to have her midriff showing. In the fic, she finds a cache of her old shit that Coco brought along on the Groundbreaker, and Izumi cries when she finds out that Coco put all her old favorite clothing articles in it. (Felix is very happy, as most of the outfits are skimpy)
and as a bonus, here’s a picture of Izzy, done by a friend of mine! obviously probably not something she’d wear in space though, lmao

Asks
Under the cut you’ll find a sampling of the asks I’ve gotten since yesterday. If you are upset about cancellation or love Lana, I’d advise you to skip.
Anonymous said:
Hi Liza - sorry if this is a dumb question, but I don’t quite understand how pilot season works. Can actors that are still working on OUAT (e.g. Colin) audition for and act in this year’s pilots? How would the timing on that work? I remember Jen saying she was only able to do the OUAT pilot b/c the HIMYM producers flipped things around for her. I’m hoping Colin can get into this round of pilots, but afraid he might have to wait until next year…
Not at all a dumb question, and I’m certainly not an expert, but I think timing is the issue.  Since he will not be under contract next year, he technically can audition and throw his hat into the ring. However, actually getting time off to audition and more importantly shoot a pilot, if it shoots prior to April, would require his current job being flexible and giving him time off.  Just as HIMYM did with JMo and is why she is always talking about them in such glowing terms. The same goes for the entire cast.  Obviously, the show can’t make allowances in the shooting schedule for everyone, we’ll have to see what happens.  Right now Colin is still under contract and his first duty is to the show.
Anonymous said:
omg apparently colin liked everyones goodbye post (even the problematic eb) except lp’s post lmao
I’m guessing that is an over sight, Colin doesn’t strike me as someone who thinks that hard about what he likes on social media.
Anonymous said:
I think you are right about Colin, that he would leave after this season no mether what. He does not seem sad, his answers on twiiter was preety cheerful all day
It’s true, he has seemed very cheery. However, Colin also doesn’t strike me as someone who overly expresses himself on social media. He seems to present as upbeat and happy no matter what. (I did notice that his post was just about the only one that didn’t effusively thank A&E.)
Anonymous said:
Hey, I’m seeing so many posts from not only the mains but also recurring/guest stars talking about how grateful they were for OUAT. This is the first time since I’ve gotten into fandom that a show I follow has been cancelled and I’m curious if that’s common, especially for guests? I’ll say this much, I’ve been so upset and bitter about this show for the last several months that seeing all the love for it has reminded me how good it once was and how blessed we were with CS and a lot of the cast.
I assume it depends on the show and the circumstances surrounding cancellation.  Most of the shows that I’ve been super invested in that then came to an end late in the run, were before social media made it easy for the actors to respond directly to fans.  This show is probably special because of the large online fan base, the huge number of guest actors that have come and gone and the generally happy experiences they all seem to have had on set.
I agree that we were very lucky with Colin and Jen and the original cast.  What a ride!
Anonymous said:
Am I alone in thinking it odd that Lana has yet to post anything about the cancellation? Even EdR, JMo, and Robbie Kay have made comments about it being grateful for their time on the show and none of them are in it anymore.
She was pretty much the first one to post, check her Instagram.
Anonymous said:
I’m kind of at peace with the whole news today. I did get a good laugh out of a tweet I saw that said at least Lana will have a lot of time for cons now. I wasn’t sure if it was an ironic tweet or not.
Ha! I think the only way to tell if it was serious or not is to see if it was posted by a Regal.  Her fans don’t have any sort of sense of humor about her, so if it’s one of them, they are 100% dead serious and think meeting with them at cons is a soaring career path.
Anonymous said:
I think you hit the nail on the head in saying youre relieved. That was my feeling too. I didnt watch S7 past 7.02 and feel such joy over the way CS got sent out. From my observations, nothing in S7 has tainted that happy end and has made rewatching S1-6 that much more special. And its great to know they wont have time to give WHook a love interest. I hope A&E will take this opportunity to wrap the show up well, whether that involves the old characters, new characters, or both. I still love OUAT
Yes, I’m with you. I hope they wrap up the show well and give Henry an appropriate happy beginning. My followers know that Henry is not my favorite character, but I would hate it if S7 did not give a character who is so important to Emma (and Killian) an appropriate send off into the future with a chance at happiness.
Anonymous said:
And here we go again l***’s fans are tagging popular show to get her roles. It’s like the ellen show all over again.
Oh that is hilarious.  It didn’t work trying to get her on a talk show, do they really think that casting directors are going to put her in a high-profile role on the recommendation from evilboobs38 on twitter?
Anonymous said:
I think we are about to hit the pilot season. How’s ****’s resume looking atm?
Well the last seven years will have but one line item. We’ll have to see how she does, I begrudge her no success, but will believe she’s destined to be the next Meryl Streep (as the manipulative shit-stirring troll claims) when I see it.
Anonymous said:
Waiting for their “inside sources” on what’s redacted’s next project would be lol
I don’t know, something about her last vacation has me thinking she might next star in a fitness video with her personal trainer/travel companion…

Did you read what the weasel eddy said that fans didn’t have to watch the season in his interview of the show being cancelled. I’ve literally never saw writers be so dismissive with their fans. Ugh wth is wrong with them.
 And
@bravebuttercups said:
Did you see the interview with E&A about Once ending after season 7? There were some particularly bitter/underhanded moments…but I’ve come to expect no less from them.
There were some decidedly questionable responses. However, I think most of them were from Eddy. Adam seemed able to control himself and was pretty diplomatic and gracious, it’s Eddy (it’s always Eddy) he can’t help but let his butthurt show. I think Eddy doesn’t know how to react to that sort of question, so he just dives directly into defensive mode and goes to the petty Emma Booth place of “don’t like it, don’t watch!”  I suppose he can do that, since the show is cancelled, he can be petulant with fans without fears of network reprisals.
Anonymous said:
Well, the Lana stans weren’t wrong. Lana did carry the show on her back. All the way to cancellation.
Tumblr media
Oh man. Like I said earlier, this cancellation is bittersweet because it feels like the end of an era, but I will never get tired of Lana jokes.  Can I also add that I LOVED that TVLine used a solo photo of her in character on their cancellation story.  Fitting.  She’s the face of this season’s failure.
 Anonymous said:
It’s bittersweet for me. I’ll always love and be grateful for S1-6, and S7 as an extra, if I’m feeling happy, but this show needed to die before it got ruined further.
Yes, that’s how I feel as well.  I’m relieved that it looks like Captain Swan will escape unscathed (knock on wood) but I’m also feeling very nostalgic.  I had some really good times watching this show and getting excited for spoilers and fangurling. It was the best.
Anonymous said:
Is it bad that I’m thinking that now Once is ending, we might finally get some talk and insight about any bts drama?
You never know, someone might eventually spill some juicy gossip.  However, I kind of doubt it.  People like JMo, Colin, Josh and Ginny have too much class. Also some of the juiciest gossip is already out there, you just have to know where to look. (Google Emilie DeRavin and Tom Ellis)
Anonymous said:
Hey Liza, do you think they knew they were getting cancelled when they did the hot seat interview? Still trying to figure out if those bitter answers we got about anything Hook related were because of Colin, or if now maybe they were just bitter in general.
No, I don’t think they had official word of cancellation when they did that interview. Just my opinion.
 Anonymous said:
I totally think Ginny and Josh will return, whether it be present day, flashback, vision, etc - I just have a feeling they will make an appearance. They’re actually closer to A&E than any of the other cast members and I find it hard to believe that they won’t be worked into this season.
I guess we’ll see.  Eddy’s comment in Variety about not wanting to ruin any of the happy endings they’ve already delivered made me think we wouldn’t see Snowing or Captain Swan.
To be honest, I prefer they don’t return.  I don’t want anything to have even a whiff of ruin, and the timelines of S7 are so wonky, they might do that if they show CS and/or Snowing.  If Henry, Regina and crew spent 8-10 years circle walking in the faux Enchanted Forest, I don’t necessarily want to see CS and Snowing 10 years after 7x02.  When it comes to them, I prefer to think of it as 6 months after 7x02 and they are just about to have their baby.

Ranking all 23 USWNT players by how important they are to winning the World Cup
Tumblr media
Everyone’s good, but a handful of stars will be counted on to perform at their best.
The United States women’s national team has released its 23-player roster for the World Cup, and it contains a handful of surprises. Allie Long, Ali Krieger, Morgan Brian and Jessica McDonald have all found call-ups tough to come by over the past year, but found their way into Jill Ellis’ final squad.
But those players are the ones who are least likely to play a big part in the USWNT’s campaign in France. Ellis has settled on a core of starters and key bench players ahead of them, and unless things go south for any of those players very soon, we can predict who’s going to be counted on to deliver results at the World Cup.
Here’s every player on the roster, ranked in order of importance to the team.
First up, the stars
These are the players who are locked in as starters when healthy, and who Ellis knows she can count on to perform.
1. Tobin Heath, RW
If you are revisiting the USWNT for the first time in a while, you may remember Heath as a player with a lot of tricks and little end product. That’s changed dramatically over the past three seasons, and Heath is now the attacker the USWNT counts on most. She’s coming off a 7 goal, 7 assist campaign for Portland Thorns and has scored 10 USWNT goals since the start of 2018.
Why she’s key: Tekkers
OK, but the tricks are awesome though. Heath is often left out on an island with little support, which means she has to do something crazy to create scoring opportunities for her team. Her ability to make something out of nothing is why she’s the most important player on the team.
2. Lindsey Horan, CM
Horan is still just 24, so her NWSL MVP campaign felt like the start of a rise to superstardom, rather than her peak. The only question is whether Ellis can get the best out of her. She gets into shooting positions a lot more often for Portland Thorns than she does for the USWNT.
Why she’s key: Everything
In addition to being an immovable tank of a midfielder who won the ball 321 times last season — 118 times more than any other player!!! — Horan is a slick passer and regularly bangs in goals from 25 yards out.
3. Julie Ertz, DM
If you like watching high work rate players who show up everywhere on the field, you’ll really like Ertz. She was a center back — and a great one — at the last World Cup, but she was moved into midfield a couple of years ago. But no matter what position she plays, she’s always a huge threat to score on set pieces.
Why she’s key: Messing people up
While Horan wins the ball back a lot, she accomplishes it mostly by being stronger than her opponents and casually shouldering people off the ball. Ertz is stylistically the opposite: she flies into challenges and wins the ball in the most dramatic way possible. And she does it A LOT.
4. Alex Morgan, ST
Morgan just tallied her 100th career national team goal, in case anyone had any doubts about where she stands in the hierarchy of all-time great international strikers. But her role in this USWNT isn’t all about scoring goals.
Why she’s key: Off the ball work
Generally, goal-scorers of Morgan’s caliber don’t take kindly to being asked to take up a role that features a lot more dirty work than trying to get on the end of service into the box. But Morgan runs her ass off all game to make life easier for her teammates, and regularly gets the pass before the assist. The non-scoring aspects of her game are wildly under-appreciated.
5. Megan Rapinoe, LW
After an ACL tear limited her at the 2016 Olympics, very few people thought Megan Rapinoe would still be this good at 33. But she’s playing the best soccer of her life, and she’s a locked-in starter despite younger, faster challengers for her spot.
Why she’s key: Big goals and assists
Morgan and Horan do all the stuff that isn’t very fun or flashy so that Rapinoe can shine. Her teammates sacrifice and create space for her because she always delivers.
6. Becky Sauerbrunn, CB
The former best defender in the world has not quite been that for the past three years, but she’s still excellent. The USWNT don’t need her to be the 2015 version of herself to win the World Cup, but they’ll still need her to step up her game a bit from where it’s been recently.
Why she’s key: Leadership
As by far the most experienced player in the defensive unit, it’ll be on Sauerbrunn to call the shots and organize her team. This is especially crucial given that Ertz doesn’t play like a traditional holding midfielder and is asked to play very aggressively, which often leaves the USWNT defense to make some tough plays in space.
7. Kelley O’Hara, RB/LB
Once an elite winger, O’Hara’s late-career transition to fullback has gone extremely well. She’s as good going forward as any fullback in the world, and she didn’t take long to become a great one-on-one defender out wide either.
Why she’s key: Lack of depth
For various reasons (bad youth player pool management, Jill Ellis’ stubbornness, Jaelene Hinkle’s homophobia), the USWNT is very thin at fullback. Whenever O’Hara’s been hurt, Ellis has gone through a cavalcade of completely unsuitable replacements. If she can’t go 90 minutes in every game that has stakes, the USWNT is in trouble.
Starters with question marks
We’re being a bit harsh — the USWNT has been the best team in the world for a couple of years now — but four of the starters give Ellis some reason for concern.
8. Crystal Dunn, LB/UT
It makes me mad that the best attacker in NWSL is the USWNT’s left back, but this ship sailed a while ago and it’s too late to make a change. For better or worse, world class attacking midfielder Crystal Dunn is going to be playing left back at the World Cup.
Why she’s key: Versatility
If the USWNT is in a situation where their back line isn’t being threatened and they really need a goal, they have the option of shifting Dunn into any attacking position. She’s like a game-changing sub, except she’s already on the field.
Big question: Can she defend elite wingers?
That Dunn can play left back at a competent level at all is incredible, and she doesn’t deserve any criticism for getting beat by world class attackers. But the USWNT is depending on her to contain world class attackers, so uhh... she’s gonna have to figure out how to do that.
9. Alyssa Naeher, GK
The post-Hope Solo era has been shaky at best, but Naeher is still a very capable goalkeeper. Her superb performances at club level suggest that her USWNT issues are more down to the defensive structure in front of her than any deficiencies she has, but no one is going to care about that if she lets in some bad goals.
Why she’s key: Even the best team needs a goalie sometimes
The USWNT will out-shoot almost all of its opponents by a huge margin, but they’re not going to hold anyone to zero shots on target.
Big question: Can she make the right decisions coming off her line?
Naeher’s shot-stopping and aerial claims have been excellent, but she’s been shaky when faced with a decision about whether or not to close down aggressively. Her recognition just hasn’t been quick enough for the national team.
10. Abby Dahlkemper, CB
On a dominant club team with a box midfield in front of her, Dahlkemper looks like a world class defender. At national team level, on a team that leaves a lot more space in front of her, she looks more average. Hopefully that changes?
Why she’s key: Sauerbrunn needs cover
Becky Sauerbrunn is not slow, but she’s not as fast as she was four years ago. And even then, Julie Ertz was the one doing most of the running. Dahlkemper will need to cut out the passes that go behind the defense into space.
Big question: Is she the starter?
All signs point to Dahlkemper getting the nod over youngster Tierna Davidson at the moment, but don’t be too shocked if Ellis makes a change.
11. Rose Lavelle, CM
There’s no one in the USWNT who’s more exciting to watch with the ball at her feet than Rose Lavelle. Unfortunately, she’s on the physio table more often than she’s on the field.
Why she’s key: Creativity
Lavelle’s ability to dribble at full speed, pick an early through ball, or play a creative backheel are second-to-none, and that’s why Ellis persists with putting her in the lineup despite her fitness problems.
Big question: Can she stay fit?
Sorry, I know, the horse is dead, I will stop beating it now.
Key bench players
These players aren’t in Ellis’ starting lineup right now, but they’re certain to make a big impact at the World Cup.
12. Christen Press, ST/UT
The biggest deficiency in Press’ game is that she’s not quite as good as Alex Morgan. Unlucky.
What she brings off the bench: Speed
I can’t imagine getting beat to hell by the work rate and physicality of Morgan, Horan and Ertz, then seeing a track star like Press enter the game in the 60th minute. My legs hurt thinking about trying to play against this team.
Why she’s not starting: Consistency
There isn’t a higher-ceiling player in this team than Press. Her best games are as good as anything Marta or Abby Wambach ever produced. Unfortunately, she’s never done it against a top team two games in a row.
13. Sam Mewis, CM
Other players rack up the goals and assists, but the key to North Carolina Courage’s NWSL success is Mewis. It’s a testament to the USWNTs depth that a coach can even consider not starting her.
What she brings off the bench: Complete CM play
Ertz and Lavelle both have one elite skill, and Horan has the potential to be the best midfielder in the world, but the most well-rounded midfielder in the pool is Mewis. If you were to give her a grade at every aspect of midfield play, you wouldn’t give her worse than an A- at anything.
Why she’s not starting: Lmao you tell me man
The thing I disagree with Ellis most about is not finding a place for Mewis in her starting XI. I’d sacrifice just about anything to have my most balanced midfielder in the team.
14. Tierna Davidson, CB
Davidson left Stanford early to turn pro and prepare for this World Cup, and she already has 19 caps at just 20 years old. And in those 19 caps, she’s proven that she’s one of the best defenders in the country and deserves her spot.
What she brings off the bench: More physical tools than the starters
There are a lot of great athletes in college soccer. It was Davidson’s brain and technical skills that allowed her to make the step up. But she’s also faster and more agile than the players she’s competing for time against, which could prove very useful.
Why she’s not starting: She’s played 2 pro soccer games
Davidson is a very mature 20-year-old, but yeah, she’s 20.
15. Carli Lloyd, ST/AM
If you last engaged with The Carli Lloyd Experience by watching her score a hat trick in the World Cup final, I regret to inform you that some things have changed.
What she brings off the bench: A direct goal threat
The USWNT has shifted towards developing and selecting a lot of crafty, technical, tricky players. That’s a good thing. But sometimes you need to switch things up, and Lloyd has a one-track mind. She goes for goal.
Why she’s not starting: A lot of reasons tbh
Besides being 36, Lloyd hasn’t played well at club level since the World Cup. She’s also just always been more of a mega-clutch athlete than someone who’s really good at playing soccer.
16. Mallory Pugh, LW/RW
Pugh may eternally be a teenager in your brain, but she’s 21 now and has 50 (!!!) national team caps. She hasn’t delivered on her early promise yet, mostly because she was playing for a very bad club manager, but she’s still a great impact sub.
What she brings off the bench: Dribble dribble dribble dribble
Along the same lines as what Press does, Pugh often comes in for Rapinoe to make the opposing fullback have to deal with a different type of winger. Instead of looking for early through balls and diagonals, Pugh runs right at people.
Why she’s not starting: Rapinoe and Heath are too good
Her time will come soon enough.
Fringe players
You probably won’t see a lot of these players on the field, but you will see people on the internet arguing that someone else should have made the roster ahead of them.
17. Allie Long, DM
Long has been on the outside looking in for the past year, but was named to the roster in place of other players that Ellis has selected ahead of her recently. Not sure how that happened!
What she brings off the bench: She’s the only real holding player
For most of her national career, Long has been a box-to-box midfielder miscast as a holding player. But she finally got really good at playing as a holding midfielder (shouts to Vlatko Andonovski). The USWNT doesn’t really have a proper one of those, so she gives Ellis a different look.
Why she’s not starting: The other midfielders are just better
No shade, Long is a good player, but four other midfielders are better.
Who she beat out and why: McCall Zerboni
The “why” is presumably that Zerboni is similar stylistically to Ertz, and Ellis wanted a different kind of player. But Zerboni has been one of the best players in NWSL for the past three years straight, is the emotional leader behind the success of the Courage, and wants you to know that we are fucking winners. She should be on the team.
18. Jessica McDonald, ST
Forwards are egomaniacs by nature. And if you’re a forward good enough to make the USWNT, you probably don’t like coming off the bench. But McDonald has been the best substitute striker in NWSL for the league’s entire existence, so she’s a great choice to reprise that role for the national team.
What she brings off the bench: Energy
No one’s better at getting up to full speed right off the bench than McDonald, and giving a team 90 minutes of effort in 30 minutes of game time. She might be even more dangerous than Press in this respect.
Why she’s not starting: Playing for NC Courage appears to earn you a demerit
Mewis isn’t starting, Dunn has to play left back, Zerboni and Lynn Williams didn’t make the team, and Merritt Matthias didn’t seem to be seriously considered despite the lack of options at fullback. Ellis doesn’t seem to think Courage players can perform at the same level when they leave the Paul Riley Cult Commune.
Who she beat out and why: Savannah McCaskill
McCaskill had an unbelievable NWSL offseason campaign in Australia, but she also got hurt during it, and she didn’t get a chance to show her best at Sky Blue FC last season. You’ll get to see more of her soon.
19. Emily Sonnett, CB/RB
While Emily Sonnett is the undisputed MVP of posting, she’s the unheralded fourth defender on this squad.
What she brings off the bench: No-nonsense defending
Every team needs a defender who just Does Their Job, and that’s Sonnett. It’s also very helpful that she can play center back or right back.
Why she’s not a starter: Good question!
Sonnett has been excellent for the Thorns. There’s not really a clear argument for or against her starting over Dahlkemper or Davidson. They’re all about as good as each other, but Sonnett is a clear fourth on Ellis’ depth chart.
Who she beat out and why: She didn’t really have any competition
While Ellis has rotated in a lot of fringe players to try out for every other spot on the roster, center back has been set in stone for a year.
20. Morgan Brian, CM
Hello there, hero of the 2015 World Cup. We didn’t expect to see you here. Brian’s been really good for the Chicago Red Stars since she returned to NWSL, but up until this point, she appeared to be out of Ellis’ plans. Her call-up is a pleasant surprise.
What she brings off the bench: Smooth touch
Like Long, Brian is here because she’s stylistically different from the starters. She’s the smoothest on the ball of the American midfielders, and is a great player to bring in if you want to kill off a game.
Why she’s not a starter: Chronic injuries
When Brian almost singlehandedly turned around the USWNT at the last World Cup just a few months out of college, she was expected to become a superstar. Unfortunately, she’s had at least one bad injury per year since then.
Who she beat out and why: Andi Sullivan
While a bad coach and club season did not cost Lavelle and Pugh their spots on this team, it was the primary factor behind Sullivan not having a chance to prove herself. She already looks much better for the Spirit, though, and she’ll be back on the USWNT in no time.
21. Ali Krieger, RB
Hello there, REALLY did not expect to see you here! Krieger has been inexplicably exiled from the USWNT over the past two seasons in favor of whatever random player Ellis could dig up to play right back instead. It was very bizarre. Finally, Ellis has swallowed her pride and admitted she needs Krieger.
What she brings off the bench: She’s an actual right back
Dunn and O’Hara are converted wingers, and Sonnett primarily plays center back, but Krieger is an honest to god right back. Sometimes it’s good to have one of those.
Why she’s not a starter: She’s an actual right back
At fullback, Ellis wants converted wingers who bomb forward and contribute in attack more than she wants defenders. Krieger isn’t bad going forward, but she’s no O’Hara or Dunn.
Who she beat out and why: Casey Short
Short has been very good for Chicago and can play right and left back, but she contributes even less going forward than Krieger does, which is probably what cost her a spot.
22. Ashlyn Harris, GK
I haven’t checked, but I assume Ashlyn Harris is the reigning NWSL Save of the Week winner. Much to the annoyance of her fans, she is still Naeher’s backup.
What she brings off the bench: Elite shot stopping
Harris certainly has her detractors (me), but none of them can say anything against her shot-stopping abilities. Her highlight plays are more spectacular than anyone else’s. She makes saves that no one else can.
Why she’s not a starter: Big errors
She also fumbles the ball into her own net about twice as often as anyone who we could reasonably call an elite goalkeeper.
Who she beat out and why: Jane Campbell
Campbell has been on a USWNT contract for the last couple years, and she was very good for Houston Dash last season. But Harris has never lost her spot on the depth chart despite shaky club form, and Campbell wasn’t as good as...
23. Adrianna Franch, GK
Winning NWSL goalkeeper of the year two seasons in a row will apparently get you on the plane to France, but not much else.
What she brings off the bench: Big plays off her line
As far as we can tell, Franch is the third keeper, so she won’t be getting off the bench at all. But if she does play: She’s way better at coming off her line quickly and making clearances than Naeher or Harris.
Why she’s not a starter: Inertia
Naeher became the starter before Franch started playing like the best keeper in the pool, and she hasn’t been bad enough to lose her place. The USWNT is like Ivy League schools: It’s hard to get in, but once you’re in, you stay in.
