Your art has been very inspiring to me for a while, I adore your style and how creative your compositions are! Your method of painting seems very efficient, do you have any tips on achieving effective brush economy?
WAHH THANK U!! so flattering...! ohhhh hmm, to be honest i dont think im the greatest at it, but my brush economy is something im trying to work on constantly ever since i began to at one point find that whenever i began to "overwork" something it would just end up looking worse than the more rougher rendering stages in the beginning.
the core thing i try to learn is how to portray the "gist" of something more than the "detail". and to do that its very useful to really understand forms (which is maybe "obvious" to say, but its true) and think in terms of that. whenever i paint its really a constant game of "how do i portray the gist of this form with as few strokes as possible?" "how do i indicate this texture without having to put in the effort?" (its funny bcs i still am really nit-picky about details but. I Am Trying HAHA)
im not sure this is very helpful but thats the philosophy thats led me to understand it a bit better (and which i still use to try to improve upon my own understanding now). if i struggle with a certain form too i just refer to artists i like and try to understand how they translate that form into their art!
to me brush economy when rendering is under a kind of similar philosophy to croquis/gesture drawing - it doesnt always matter to capture all of the detail as long as you capture the "essence" of your subject!
#asks#filurig words#(guy who forgets thats my text tag. ah well)#basically what im trying to say is that a lot of things are more Simple than your brain might think (if its like mine)#i dont mean simple as in simple to execute but like. simple in detail

i realise i havent actually made a pinned for this blog so...
hi, im björn and im a 22 year old guy (he/him) from sweden Who Likes To Draw!! this is my art blog. i really like birds, paleontology, ocs, and music! im also autistic and if it isnt obvious enough birds and music are my special interests. i guess ocs also could count as such...
i tend to draw my ocs. my main oc universe i call “pareidolia”, which is a setting that takes place in sweden roughly during the first decade of the 1900s. everything is as it is with the exception of creatures and figures from folklore actually being real - and while some magical elements exist, their true nature is a bit different from the mythos.
check out the tags related to it here if u want to snoop about it! or if u want to read more in depth stuff, check out the toyhouse page.
if u follow and i happen to glance on ur profile and see stuff like proship, dead dove, etc i will block u. sorry i just dont want that kind of analysis on my guys and story
i also have a twitter, youtube, artfight and instagram !

ill start with uuuhh some. Thoughts on themes surrounding arvo and folkes character :3 if u open the keep reading tab u will see im indeed very normal about them.
in particular this kinda struck me completely accidentally bcs i was looking over folklore stuff and realised that The Big Theme around arvo’s character is shame. AND one of the names for the devil in swedish foklore is literally “shame”. AND THE MOAR I KEPT READING. the more it MADE SENSE!!
mostly wrote this bcs i have not delved into folke’s brain as much as i have arvo’s ngl. he’s always been the Resident Sad Guy but i wanted to kinda straighten that out... and also this made me realise some fun potential character conflicts for him with his found family... WHICH IS NEEDED!! for the schism between him, them and arvo!!!!!!!

some thoughts about potential forest nymph (and other human-like creatures) biology in pareidolia...
essentially, a forest nymph is a human carcass that has been infected by a parasitic fungus. this fungus goes through several life stages:
1. spore
spores from a mature fungus is released into the air. this happens very rarely due to the long incubation period etc etc... the spores also need to find their way to a host quickly as their “shelf life” is pretty low. but once it finds a human host the first incubation begins
2. first incubation
the fungus starts infesting the body, making its way to the brain. during this stage hosts may feel body aches and an increasing exhaustion than normal. once it starts reaching the brain, neurological symptoms begin such as increased restlessness, isolation and a sudden desire to spend more time in forested areas. the physical changes here are not visible on the surface yet. at the end of this stage, the individual will be compelled to make their way to the nearest forest, where the host dies. the time this stage lasts can vary from 5-10 years - it depends on how resilient the host is to the infection.
3. second incubation
the body “reanimates” - the consciousness has been replaced with the fungus. there’s no “hivemind” stuff going on here, basically each individual fungus is different - the fungus develops this consciousness during the previous incubation period and also, similarly to basilisks, picks up on SOME memories/knowledge of the host. right at the beginning of reanimation, not a lot of visible physical changes have occured, but over time the nymph becomes less and less human looking - feet twisting into hooves, and hair-like filaments growing all over the body, replacing the initial body hair, ears and nose becoming deerlike.. etc. the nymph can spend a very long time in this stage, from 80-100+ years. they often stake out their own territory which they patrol and take great care of. nymphs also feel a protectiveness towards other creatures/animals in their territory and can easily form bonds with them - including humans. they are NOT infectious during this stage.
4. final budding
at the end of their lifespans, nymphs seek out the most favoured spot in their territory to fall asleep. once they do so, fruiting bodies erupt out of them - often growing into the size of a large tree. the fruiting stage can take a bit of time and thus its not unusual for the creatures the nymph has bonded with to stay with them during this vulrenable state, preventing scavengers etc. from disrupting the process. the fungus releases its spores, and then dies about a week after budding.
initially i had wanted to keep like, every “human-like” creature not human-like at all (thus the gnomes being birds) but i honestly love the imagery of the original skogsrå... so this is my Solution LOL. im not sure if ill do it with a lot of other human-like folklore creatures, but if i do i imagine that they can just be different fungi from this particular family that have just specialized into different territorial niches...
