If there is a historical inaccuracy that destroys the film, it is not the usual points levied at it, that being the non-white actors scattered through the cast and the one figure written as being transgender with evidence to the fact. No, the issue is that this film wants you to fucking adore it’s central character. The story the film is telling is that of comparison. Elizabeth becomes less human, less alive, and eventually is in the mask of Queenship we know her as in portraiture. Mary never gives in to the men around her, and allows herself to be a “woman”, and thus loses her throne because of it. In many ways, it’s telling the same story Netflix’s ‘The Crown’ (2016-present) does…but that’s not the story here.

Mary, Queen of Scots (2018)
Tumblr media
Yes, it’d be nice if Mary, Queen of Scots was a completely accurate portrayal of history but is that what audiences want? Personally, I'll take an entertaining movie over a faithful one any day. When we look at the film's performances and sumptuous costumes, when we consider the drama and the engaging story, this film is undeniably succesful.
In 1561, Mary Stuart (Saoirse Ronan), the Catholic Queen of Scotland, returns to her home country to claim her late husband's throne, currently held by her half-brother, the Earl of Moray (James McArdle). Her cousin, Elizabeth (Margot Robbie), is the Protestant Queen of England. This makes them - at least in the eyes of every man in their respective courts - enemies. As Elizabeth is unmarried and childless, Mary is the one who would replace her as Queen of England should she pass. This prompts conspirators on both sides to begin making their moves.
Something about these costume dramas makes for great villains. David Tennant plays John Knox, a Protestant cleric so fanatic about his hatred you can’t wait for him to get thrown in an oubliette or better yet, beheaded. But at least he’s got the courtesy of being openly hostile towards Mary. Nearly everyone surrounding the young queen is conspiring to raise an army against her, trying to weasel their way into marrying her to gain power, scheming up a way to knock down her allies to undermine her position or a greasy troll. You want Mary to find a way to navigate the complex maze of politics and egos set before her. In a time when women had no power or authority, she’s someone with a voice. The sooner she adapts to this nest of vipers, the better. Of course, once she begins getting her hands dirty, she's likely to get stuck in the mud, unable to escape...
There’s a unique sort of relationship between Mary and Elizabeth that develops. It’s one of the film’s most compelling elements. As women of authority, they have a lot in common but the circumstances of the time have forced them into antagonism. They have sympathy for each other but only to an extent. It’s an amusing fantasy. The real-life queens never saw each other this way. In fact, they never met face to face. The film finds a way to sort of but not really tiptoe around this fact. Historians will disagree but I say writer Beau Willimon made the right choice because it hightens the engaging story and drama. I have more mixed feelings about the casting of Adrian Lester as Lord Thomas Randolph and of Gemma Chan as Elizabeth Hardwick. They’re fine in their roles. Randolph is an amusing character with much to do but the two of them stand out like sore thumbs because… well… they were white in real life. I’m not a director. I don't know anything about making movies but since Josie Rourke told the world “I was really clear, I would not direct an all-white period drama” maybe she should’ve selected a different project?
Mary, Queen of Scots isn’t quite explosive enough to make you forgive its looser-than-needed interpretation of history. As a movie, however, there’s a lot to like here. It looks good, the drama is consistently intriguing and the characters are compelling. I'm sure there's another adaptation of this story out there that's better. If there isn't yet, there will be some day. Until then, I recommend Mary Queen of Scots. (June 7, 2019)

They got married. 🇨🇮🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Dear Married Anon,
Interesting news:
Tumblr media
These people (I had no idea she existed before this year's awards season and no clue he was someone until now):
Tumblr media
They met in 2018, while filming Mary, Queen of Scots and were very quickly an item. And then, he suddenly proposed in 2023. This is how it's done:
Tumblr media
Proposed while on a Scottish holiday, posted on Insta, then oops, quickly deleted. Cue in a fandom apparently as hungry as ours, and voilà: a speculative happening was just created.
And then, this happened:
Tumblr media
Secretly married, in a logical location - where he proposed and where he grew up:
Tumblr media
All the guests 'were (...) sworn to secrecy'. Of course they were.
Tumblr media
Remember (LOOOOOL for three centuries and a half), Anon: there were, ultimately, very few secret things about that Remarkable Week-end.
The difference between something organic and private and something deeply questionable, resulting in cheap 🎪.
And the difference between being private and being borderline paranoid, and yet deliberately letting all the important 'info' leak all over the place. Like, you know, when you are trying to hide the elephant in that room with a napkin, or something.

Simon Russell Beale
Tumblr media
Physique: Chubby Build Height: 5′ 6″ (1.68 m)
Sir Simon Russell Beale CBE (born 12 January 1961) is an English actor. He has been described by The Independent as "the greatest stage actor of his generation". He has received two BAFTA Awards, three Olivier Awards, and a Tony Award. For his services to drama, he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 2019.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Beale made his film debut in Sally Potter's period drama Orlando (1992). He gained prominence for his roles in Persuasion (1995), Hamlet (1996), My Week with Marilyn (2011), The Deep Blue Sea (2011), Into the Woods (2014), and Mary Queen of Scots (2018). He has also appeared in the television projects The Young Visiters (2003), Dunkirk (2004), and as Falstaff in the BBC made-for-television films Henry IV, Part I and Part II (2012). He was part of the main cast of Showtime's Penny Dreadful.

A very cute and cuddly daddy, I first noticed him in the second season of House of the Dragon. Personally, I'd waste no time in trying to get him in bed. Seriously, that beard would just look great with a big load of jizz all over it wouldn't it? I know absolutely nothing of his personal life, so he is most likely straight. Wait… Beale is gay? He's a British actor who loves the theatre. Of course he's gay.

There are two things that give me pause though.
If I was Joe's agent or Joe himself I don't think it would be a good idea to finish a Shakespeare movie which hasn't even been released yet and your first project right after that is more Shakespeare. It's more of the same stuff yk
If they only started filming in late July, unless Joe has a small role is a bit of a quick turn around of just having one month to film, given he's probably going to have to go for promo tour in September. We already know of two festivals, there's probably going to be more interviews and stuff
LMAO, are you new here? He doesn't care about that. 😅 He had both The Favourite and Mary Queen of Scots in 2018 and both Harriet and A Christmas Carol in 2019. Lots of period films. Joe doesn't pick roles based on the previous job. If anything, he'll probably think it's brilliant and hilarious to have a Shakespeare year in 2025 😹😹 and Hamlet it's not even period, it's modern, set in our times so it's not exactly the same.
Also, the thing with Joe is that he does what he wants. 🤷‍♀️ 😹😹 If he likes a director he'll do the job, whether it's a leading role or 2 scenes (The Souvenir). It's just that simple with Joe. If he wants to work with a director he'll do it even if filming starts a week later. 😹😹 If Yorgos calls, Joe says yes, before even reading the scrip. He'll do it for 5 min of screentime. 🤭 And we already know Joe's not the lead so he could do it and be done in 2 weeks 😼 Time is not an issue. (https://www.bookcompanion.com/hamnet_character_list.html)
So, assuming that swifter didn't lie, it is possible.
And if you want an actor who cares about money and fame and leading roles I'm afraid you are in the wrong fandom 😹😹😹😹😹 I've made my peace with Joe's style 😹😹😹 He will work when he wants to work, even if that means not working for a couple of years 😹😹😹

Soooo I know probably no one cares, but I was bored this afternoon and decided to make a list of historical period dramas following the history of the English monarchs
(Note: these are all DRAMAS. None of them are perfectly historically accurate, several of them are downright offensive. Also, several British monarchs are multiple depictions and some had none. I did my best, but this is by no means an exhaustive list. Do your own research on each of the films for any triggers or content warnings.)
William the Conqueror- The Early Life of William the Conqueror, up to the Battle of Hasting and the Invasion of 1066
1066- William the Conqueror, the invasion of England and the Battle of Hastings
[William II does not have any film dedicated to his life or his reign (that was usable, anyway]
[Henry I does not have any film dedicated to his life or his reign]
Pillars of Earth- This series does not focus on it, but it is set to the backdrop of the Anarchy, which is absolutely fascinating, and it is a crime we do not have any good films about Empress Matilda
The Lion in Winter- Henry II and Elanor of Aquitaine (another woman who needs her own miniseries)
Richard the Lionheart (2021)- Richard I
King John (1899!)- John I [ALL of the other movies with these two were fucking Robin Hood movies]
[Henry III has never been depicted in film]
Outlaw King- Edward I
Edward II- Edward II (this is Piers Gaveston erasure that I could only find this one film)
The Dark Avenger- Edward III (and Edward the Black Prince as a bonus!)
Richard II- Richard II (any adaptation works, there are multiple)
The Hollow Crown- Richard II, Henry IV, and Henry V
The King- Henry IV and Henry V
[Henry VI has no film depictions of his life or reign. WHICH IS A CRIME GIVE ME MARGARET OF ANJOU YOU FUCKING COWARDS!)]
The White Queen- Edward IV, Edward V, Richard III, and Henry VII (plus a fuckton of other historical figures)
Richard III: The Princes in the Tower- Richard III, Edward V
Richard III- Richard III (any adaptation will work, there are multiple. Be forewarned that although modern portrayals tend to be sympathetic, Shakespeare thought he was dick and it shows.)
The White Princess- Henry VII (plus his family)
The Spanish Princess- The last years of Henry VII's reign, the beginning of Catherine of Aragon and Henry VIII's marriage, and Prince Arthur! (Still salty we haven't had a KING Arthur yet)
The Tudors- Henry VII (+plus his six wives and Mary I) (Henry VII has an absolute fuckton of movies about each of his wives, I recommend picking a few more from the list) (also, be warned that this show is as historically inaccurate as shit, but good for drama)
The Prince & The Pauper- Edward VI (I don't think this one is very historically accurate either, but the most interesting thing about this Edward was his birth and death sooooo)
Lady Jane- Jane Grey
[Mary I has no film depictions of her life or reign (GIVE US A MOVIE YOU COWARDS!) (She does appear in the Tudor's and in some of Elizabeth I's shows though)]
Becoming Elizabeth- Elizabeth I (plus her siblings, I think)
Reign- Mary, Queen of Scots (VERY historically inaccurate, but one of my favorite period dramas. Mary's story is also very important to Elizabeth I and James I's)
Mary, Queen of Scots- Mary, Queen of Scots & Elizabeth I (2018) (this show covers the time in between Mary arriving in England and being executed)
Elizabeth: The Golden Age- Elizabeth I
Elizabeth I- Elizabeth I (2005)
Mary & George- James I & VI (This one isn't out yet, but none of James' other movies are that great- like AT ALL, and this one looks like its shaping up to be interesting)
[Charles I has no film depictions of his life or reign (which is very disappointing- this guy was so awful he got his head cut off and caused a civil war! Where's the vilification?)]
To Kill a King- Oliver Cromwell (+ a little Charles I)
Cromwell- Oliver Cromwell
Charles II: The Power and the Passion- Charles II
[James II has no film dedicated to his life or reign (another one that's a shame, this guy was so unpopular he was ALSO chased off the throne. Down with the Tudors, I want to see some Stuart movies)]
[William III and Mary II have no film dedicated to their joint reign.]
The Favourite- Anne I
[George I has no film dedicated to his life or reign]
[George II has no film dedicated to his life or reign]
Queen Charlotte- George III (and Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz)(this one also isn't out yet, but it will be in 2023)
The Madness of King George- George III (and George IV)
A Royal Scandal- George IV
[William IV has no film dedicated to his life or reign]
The Young Victoria- Victoria I
Mrs. Brown- Victoria I
Victoria & Abdul- Victoria I
Edward the Seventh- Edward VII
[George V has no film dedicated to his life or reign]
The Woman He Loved- Edward VIII (and Wallis Nazi Simpson)
Bertie and Elizabeth- George VI (and Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon)
The King's Speech- George VI (and Elizabeth Bowes Lyon
The Crown- Queen Elizabeth II
Spencer- Charles III (and Princess Diana)

Hey! I'm kind of a new Aneurin fan...I haven't watched all of his stuff yet, only a few things, but he's already re-awakened the tragic emo whump fic writer inside me :'D. Sorry if this is an odd question, but do you know if he has any scenes involving injury stuff? The closest I've seen is Citadel where he gets attacked and wakes up in hospital, and Dunkirk where...well...(sheds a tear for Gibson). I'm basically looking for scenes I can use as inspiration for whump. (asking anonymously in case this question is weird T_T)
Thank you for your question! I love watching Aneurin cry 😅 it's those huge pug eyes of his.. and don't worry, this is Tumblr. Everything is weird here 🙃🙃
Well.. I don't think he has much of those scenes, but I'll try to list some.
A welsh soap opera about a bunch of doctors called Casualty prt 2 - prt 3 - prt 4
There's a short film from his student times titled In Deep (2008) .
Ironclad (2011) - he is a wee virgin squire here who joins to his first battle.
The White Queen (2013) - Richard's death scene in the very last episode 😭 (get ready for a brand new trauma)
Mary Queen of Scots (2013) - idk if it counts, but Lord Darnley gets sick and develops pretty nasty oozing scars on his face.
A very minor hand injury in Dead in a Week or Your Money Back (2018)
Barkskins (2020) - There are a few scenes where he fights and gets injured/bloody
His final scene in The Catch (2023) might count bc he gets stabbed
And he gets beaten up a few times in 1899 (2022)
