I’ve been writing for as long as I can remember. Novellas, poetry, fanfiction—you name it. There was always a burning desire to express what was in my heart, to tell the stories that lived in my head. However, because I’m located in the Global South, because I’m the product of several generations of law and medicine, l never let myself think that it could be anything more than a hobby only for my spare time. It wasn’t until 2020 that I took a leap of faith, quitting my office job and deferring my master’s program abroad in order to write a fantasy romance epic rooted in Southeast Asian culture, tradition, and mythology.
And now, flash forward three years, my debut novel THE HURRICANE WARS is a USA Today, Indie, and New York Times bestseller in its first week of release! This would never have been possible without: my communities, fandom and Filipino, and all the book bloggers who really showed up for this novel, who tirelessly spread the word; my brilliant agent Thao Le who’s had my back since day one; my Harper Voyager US team, who poured so much time and creative energy into THW’s publishing and campaign; and the booksellers and librarians throughout the US who advocated for an unknown brown author’s debut to have a place on their shelves. I owe it all to you!
I kind of want to cry for the girl I used to be, battling mental health issues and flitting from one degree program to the next, hoping to find the one that was fulfilling and “acceptable” at the same time, even though deep down writing was all there ever was or could be. I kind of want that girl to see into her future and say “Kaya naman pala” and wallow a bit. But I prefer to embrace this moment, in awe at the knowledge that my past has informed the voice that I now share with the world, and it is this same past that has gotten me here.
I’m proud to represent my motherland the Philippines in this achievement. I hope that in some small way this can be a step toward encouraging Southeast Asian policymakers to address the gaps in support and infrastructure for our talented local writing scenes, as well as motivating the global publishing industry to seek out more Southeast Asian writers and give our stories a platform. Onward! 💖🌩️

reading updates: september 2023
AHOY EVERYBODY!!! the end of the month has really crept up on me and lo, I have no finished as many books as I thought I would by this point! but so it goes.
also I'm fighting for my life trying to get through all of the library books I have checked out, which is a bummer because there are a bunch of creepy books I want to start reading for Spooky Month! but time is an illusion and I've already made my peace with Spooky Month extending into November, so whatever happens happens, babey! but that's the future, right now we need to talk about what I've been reading for the past month.
A View from the Bottom: Asian American Masculinity and Sexual Representation (Nguyen Tan Hoang, 2014) - Nguyen's dissertation is a really fascinating piece of queer scholarship, which gets deep (pun somewhat intended) into forms of media often overlooked by academia - gay porn, softcore art films, gay indie documentaries - in search of a new understanding of Asian masculinity and bottomhood. I really like Nguyen's thoughtful study of bottoming, effeminacy, and sexual abjection, all of which he's pretty in favor of, balanced with analyses of the factors of race, class, nationality, and citizenship that complicate how gay Asian men are perceived. it's wide-ranging, it's meticulous, it's kind of hot? I love you, queers in academia.
"You Just Need to Lose Weight" and 19 Other Myths About Fat People (Aubrey Gordon, 2023) - god, okay, listen: this book was a little dry TO ME but ONLY BECAUSE I have already spent years listening to Aubrey Gordon discuss all 19 of these myths and a bunch of other shit on her excellent podcast, Maintenance Phase. if you don't listen to Maintenance Phase either start doing that or read this book! which is extremely well-researched and great for debunking pretty much every "justification" a person might off to try and make their fatphobia sound reasonable. frankly if I could load up copies of YJNTLW into, like, a t-shirt gun to just have on standby to fire at people, I would do that.
Sorry, Bro (Taleen Voskuni, 2023) - yeah you all already know about this book, which is the one in which a 27 year old brings the narrative to a screeching halt to assure the readers that it's okay for her to hook up with a 31 year old woman because despite the so-called age gap both of their brains are fully-cooked. that's not actually the worst part of this book; the worst part is that the prose is unpolished in the extreme and the main character is kind of a dumb asshole. cannot say I recommend it, no matter how desperate you may be for bisexual Armenian representation.
Brown and Gay in LA: The Lives of Immigrant Sons (Anthony Christian Ocampo, 2022) - I really like the way Ocampo writes his nonfiction, which is very chatty and extremely accessible (if a little prone to editorializing). I love seeing sociologists writing from the community the community they live in, and these interviews come from second generation queer Latino and Filipino men frequenting the same LA clubs and coffee shops as the gay second gen Filipino author. it kills the presumed spectator that a lot of writing on marginalized communities can fall victim to; here, it's not that brown gay men need to be explained, but rather outsiders who need to make the effort to keep up with their lives. I especially appreciated Ocampo's highlighting the disparity between Latino and Filipino men's experiences in education, where very different sets of racial stereotypes impact their ability to succeed in white-dominated school systems; if you're curious about why Latino and Filipino men are categorized together at all in this study I strongly recommend Ocampo's other book, the Latinos of Asia.
The Vanishing Half (Brit Bennett, 2020) - it's always kind of astonishing when something that was extremely hyped-up and buzzy turns out to actually be as good as all that, and the Vanishing Half really was that good. the premise of two light-skinned Black twins separating so that one can "pass over" and live her life as a white woman is compelling all on its own, but Bennett is so committed to every possible angle of this premise: what does it mean to live more than one life? what other ways are people more than one person? it shows up everywhere through this novel: in losing your twin, in transing your gender, in drag performances, in actors, in people moving to new towns where no one knows them and becoming someone else. the moment it really hit me that Bennet Got It was a completely innocuous sentence that identified a Korean restaurant owner in California as a man who had attended medical school in Korea - even this background character, who we'll hardly hear from again, has been a different person in a different life! everyone has these layers and layers and different sides of themselves and it's just beautifully executed. mwah. chef's kiss.

Tangled Hearts in the City Lights
Kat's messy love life gets trickier when she falls for her boss.
Fandom: Evan Peters
Author's note:
Just a quick heads up before you dive in—this is my very first crack at writing and creating a story. So, please bear with me! I’m super excited to share this journey with you all, and I hope you enjoy the ride as much as I’ve enjoyed putting it together. Thanks for giving my story a chance!
Catch you in the chapters, Katie
Kathleen Henderson, 28, better known as Kat to anyone who's anyone, finally had enough. Manila had shrunk overnight, feeling more like a shoebox full of sappy, tear-stained love letters than the vibrant city it was. So, what's a girl to do when every corner of her hometown whispers her ex's name? You guessed it—pack up her sass and an arsenal of Filipino snacks, and book it to Los Angeles.
Touching down in LA, Kat felt like a character in one of those glam travel vlogs—except nobody warned her about the jet lag and apartment-hunting woes. Her new digs in Koreatown were cozy, which was realtor-speak for "You'll need to suck in your tummy to fit between the bed and the bathroom."
But Kat wasn't just about charm and curves; she was here on a mission to start fresh. Armed with her infectious smile, which could light up any room, and a style that matched her bubbly personality, she dived into the job market. That's when she hit the jackpot—an ad looking for a personal assistant to none other than Evan Peters. Yes, the dreamy, slightly quirky star who'd always been her celeb crush.
"Dude, no way," Kat muttered to herself as she clicked 'apply,' half-convinced this was a prank. She showed up to the interview in her best "I'm-a-serious-professional-but-also-fun" floral dress, which was a bold move considering LA's unofficial uniform is yoga pants and green juice.
The interview was less of a chat and more of an interrogation session. Evan's manager was all sharp blazers and sharper glances, sizing Kat up as if she might sprint out the door with the office silver. But Kat? She kept it cool, flashed her brightest, "Hire me, I'm awesome" grin, and talked up her organizational skills like she was running for president of the planners.
Leaving the building, she wasn't sure if she'd nailed it or totally faceplanted. But just as she hit the nearest store for some victory/consolation halo-halo, her phone buzzed. She got the job. Oh, snap!
Day one rolled around, and Kat was all nerves and excitement. Evan's place was like stepping into a Pinterest board titled "Homes Too Nice to Touch." And there he was—Evan Peters in the flesh, looking effortlessly cool and not at all like someone who needed to be saved from his own chaos.
"Hey, Kat, ready to dive into the deep end?" he greeted with that killer smile, making her wonder if her job duties included saving him from a sea of fan mail.
As they toured his house, talking everything from vegan snack hacks to indie film scripts, Kat felt a jolt of excitement. This wasn't just a job; it was the beginning of her Hollywood adventure. She wasn't looking for fame, just maybe a little fun and a chance to see if LA could make her heart sing again.
Kathleen "Kat" Henderson was about to find out if moving to the city of stars was her ticket to a new life or just a new brand of crazy. Either way, she was ready for the ride—bring on the chaos, LA! PART TWO COMING SOON ❤️

Any headcannons about the interactions between Piri, Mexico, and Spain? Since Piri was technically directly administered by Mexico for the majority of their time as colonies of Spain, how do you think their relationship would have been? And then what are your thoughts on how it would have been like when the colonial link between Piri and Mexico abruptly ended, and Spain was suddenly in and around Piri more often than before?
small note: I'm not as familiar with the histories of spain and mexico respectively, so i apologize for any errors or inaccuraries on my part! there's a lot i'm missing here as well because of how expansive this period was (literally 300+ years) but if you want any specifics feel free to send an ask anyway. as always, i'm defaulting to my PH OC for this, but you may use what i have for your interpretation of canon PH if you wish
i have the current personification of the philippines originally be the precolonial polity of tondo in my personal headcanon (and there's a lot to unpack and discuss there), so when she met spain for the first time they were pretty close in physical age with both more or less being in their teens (philippines being a younger teen at the time, but still); mexico, however, i see as being a result of colonization, born from the ruins of tenochtitlan as spain fashioned new spain into being, and as a result was very much a child in comparison. the hilarity that it's mexico-- still a kid-- who technically had more authority as the spanish east indies (philippines) were administered under new spain ensues
mexico being young also meant that a lot of the time she was operating under spain's instructions and influence, and often his authority superseded her's when it came to the spanish east indies, which was really more of a region part of the viceroyalty of new spain; i want to acknowledge the different power dynamics that were at play under the spanish empire, and that mexico was very much an important jewel to the spanish empire, but both she and philippines were still, at the end of the day, colonies under the spanish empire's eyes
that said i do think mexico and philippines interacted regularly with each other, mostly through trade (manila-acapulco galleon trade ties); the disparity between their physical ages helped to even out their dynamic a bit, and they often shared and exchanged aspects of their cultures with one another, influencing each other whether it be in food (ie. the evolution between the mexican drink champurrado and the rice porridge champorado, both utilizing chocolate, or the evolution of champoy/kiamoy in chinese-filipino communities to the chamoy sauce in mexico) or clothing or theater; both left an undeniable mark upon one another, and despite the disagreements and issues they had they were more or less very good friends-- a childhood friend on mexico's end even
that said, there were disagreements; it's bad enough philippines had gradually lost her sovereignty (although the conditions of that were complicated), spain had decided to put her under the technical administration of a viceroyalty whose personification was more or less a child, and the differences in that power dynamic on was felt; philippines did understand mexico was only doing what was instructed of her and much of her resentment fell more towards spain, but that didn't mean she and mexico didn't have disagreements from time to time
philippines (as tondo) had first met spain when he arrived together with the command of miguel lopez de legazpi at the shores of what is now manila bay (when spain had arrived with ferdinand magellan prior he had met a different polity), and while mexico was the one technically administering philippines spain was certainly still present, often intervening especially during times of more expansive military conflict such as the seven years war-- the spanish empire was expansive, and a lot of the basic tasks of administration as a result fell on mexico's shoulders, but that doesn't mean spain wasn't present in his own way as well, stepping in even at mexico's own protests at times
philippines and spain's close physical age gap and the fact both met as personifications with centuries already under their belts evidently means i don't see them as parent-child, but it doesn't mean spain wasn't also a big influence on her; the nature of their relationship during the colonial period was Complicated(tm), and i could probably expound on this another time, but essentially spain was sort of like an upperclassman mentor she was suspicious of but still drew influence from regardless; there's a lot more i could go into, from the colonial violence to the ways in which spanish cultural influence in religion and otherwise came with the creation of systemic structures that would make their adoption an implicit pressure that required conformity to access any amount of privilege under colonialism, but i don't want to discount hers (or even mexico's tbh but i'm less familiar with that history) agency for that matter either; philippines did feel the pressure to conform in a lot of areas, but sometimes she did adopt influences because she thought it was fashionable, and a lot of times even made some of those influences her own (indigenization/filipinization); it's messy and complex and maybe someday i'll expound on this in the future, but that day isn't today
whether it came from mexico or spain though, philippines did often more or less carry on doing her own thing; the physical distance between the spanish east indies and spanish crown did mean a lot of the time philippines pushed forward with doing what she wanted anyway, sometimes even ignoring missives from above completely if she could get away with it. mexico was usually far and only administering on a technical level, and spain was often too far away in europe or elsewhere in some other colony to do much anyway, so insert shrug emoji here
philippines had watched mexico grow, probably was bewildered by how fast she grew too (as these new world kids often did grow exponentially fast), and overall i do think she was sympathetic as insurgencies grew and she began demanding independence from spain; ultimately though i don't think philippines saw her fate tied with mexico. mexico did await the day philippines would gain her own independence again though, so that they could restart their relations as true equals; of course the road to ph independence... definitely had a lot of setbacks
after mexico became independent full administration of the philippines came fully under the spanish crown, and spain was more present in philippines's life; evidently she didn't receive it well as by the end of the century she would fight for her own independence, and even prior revolts against colonial authority were a regular par of the philippine experience under spain (although definitely complicated in its own right, something i'll also need to expand on someday)
there's. a lot more i would have wanted to go into and some stuff here is tentative but!! here's a rough idea basically
#hetalia#aph philippines#hws philippines#aph mexico#hws mexico#aph spain#hws spain#i would've liked to talk more in-depthly#but this is a rough idea basically#asks

Hi there! May I ask if it's possible for you to read my debut poetry collection and leave a review on Amazon? I can send you a copy of the manuscript for free in exchange for a review. It's a short read and I would really appreciate it if you could do this for me. I'm a newbie author just starting out and I hope you can support me. Writing is my passion and I would like to have some success and I really wanna share my writing to people.
Here's the synopsis of the book: In this debut poetry collection are thirty poems that speak of the horrors of society and the realities of life. Themes range from grief, loss, queerness, social commentaries, and the political, among others, with a splash of Filipino mythology. This poetry collection provides commentaries on our realities through the use of metaphors and imagery, the dark and the macabre. These dark poems of varying degrees speak our truths, and aim to make us see for we cannot escape what is true and dark.
Here's the link to the manuscript of my poetry collection: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1dx3-819nBU_sMVRovhOksA0gUR4M40Qe?usp=sharing
And here's the link to my book on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DPRD37X3
I sincerely hope that you'll be willing to read my book. Since it's a poetry collection, it's only a short read. I'm not asking for anything else here but a little bit of your time and just one positive review on Amazon. I would really appreciate it if you could support me as an indie author. Thank you very much!

Omeghee!!! The writing quality in here is superb! This is my first time reading a Filipino Gothic romance, and Miss/Ma'am convinced me to read more. There's a lot of mystery in here that, for the most part, is explained inside the novel, but! I still have a lot of unanswered questions that I so badly wanted answers 😫 Like, what makes Trinity an ____ ? Is she cured at the end? What makes Hullian? Is he a descendant? What happens next?? Arggh!! My imagination is killing me! If I had the funds, I would definitely buy the paperback version of this novel. Maybe the answers will be there, but sadly, for now I'm a broke college student, so... I'll put it on the list 🥹 If someone is reading this review, I highly recommend buying it. Let's support our local Indie authors, guys!!

Hidden in Plain Sight: The Connotative Interpretation of a Literary Piece
"Minsan may isang Puta" is an allegory written by Mike Portes that was published in April 2004 and later modified in 2007. Despite honing her I.T. skills at DLSU Manila, Mike Portes is an entrepreneur and an author. She was a guest writer for two high-traffic blog sites, Definitely Filipino and Get Real Philippines. Portes’ allegory 'Minsan may isang Puta' left a huge mark on Filipino literature, for it has been studied in high school, college, and other learning facilities in the Philippines. It has received numerous awards and won a film grant to be included in an indie trilogy entitled “Ganap na Babae”, better known internationally as ‘Garden of Eve’.
The allegory delves into the story of a young, beautiful woman and the pain and hardship she has experienced. It was later pronounced that the story exhibits the experiences the Philippines had, where it was compared to a whore (puta) for how it was ‘used’ and passed around by different personas.
The line “Tatlong malilibog na foreigner ang nagpyesta sa katawan ko.” is analogous to how the Philippines was ‘passed around’ by three different foreigners, who were our colonizers.
In the passage “Sa tulong ng ilan sa mga anak ko, napalayas ko ang demonyo pero ang hirap magsimula," the author smartly used metaphor to compare the whore’s children to the Filipino residents in how it succeeded in driving away the ‘demon’ in the story, in which the demon is the colonizer that had occupied the Philippines.
The allegory written by Portes tackles different societal issues of the past and the present. Disguised behind its simple delivery is a deep message that would touch the hearts of the readers. As such, Minsan may isang puta will continue to resonate its profound significance to our country’s timely issues. Mike Portes exhibited complete mastery towards the use of figures of speech to provide a deeper meaning behind a simple passage. Her use of rhetorical devices has aided in a better understanding of her seemingly different excerpt.

Exploring the Depths of Humanity: An Analysis of 'MINSAN MAY ISANG PUTA
Mike Portes, a skilled web and graphic designer, authored 'Minsan May Isang Puta,' which secured a film grant in 2010. The indie film 'Ganap na Babae,' directed by Sarah Roxas, was inspired by my work. Additionally, I am the author of 'The Dove Files,' and you can find my short story on Goodreads. In the short story 'Minsan May Isang Puta,' the narrative unfolds as an allegory, drawing parallels to the socio-political landscape of our country. The author skillfully employs lines with symbolic, literal, and metaphorical significance. For instance, the line 'Tatlong malilibog na foreigner ang nag-pyesta sa katawan ko' serves as a poignant symbol, representing the three foreigners that historically influenced and conquered our nation. Carefully layered elements reveal a profound explanation of our societal context. The protagonist, representing the Philippines, becomes a central figure. Authored by Mike Portes, a passionate Filipino artist deeply devoted to his homeland, the story summarizes the union's theme and historical events. The line 'Sa tatlong beses akong nagahasa, ang pinakahuli ang di ko malilimutan' serves as a metaphor for the Japanese conquest, capturing the harsh realities of the Philippines. Portes successfully portrays widespread poverty and hardship faced by its people, drawing from his experiences as a dedicated volunteer assisting struggling Filipino families. Portes profound connection to the nation serves as a driving force behind the creation of this book. The story centers on a woman who, after enduring hardship, chooses to break free from societal norms for the sake of her children's well-being. Pilipinas, a significant figure, allows herself to be used by others for their happiness but eventually decides to break away from this system. The story highlights the challenges faced by Pilipinas, such as exploitation and hardships, but also emphasizes her resilience and love for her children.Mike Portes writing showcases diverse perspectives and profound insights. As an active advocate supporting Filipino causes, Portes conveys a powerful message. The story can be interpreted as a reflection of Philippine history, where the three foreigners symbolize concurring nations that exploited the country. The potential of the children represents present-day Filipinos, illustrating internal discord among siblings and the need for unity and support for the Philippines. The essence of the story urges us to learn lessons from our past, embrace a fighting spirit for unwavering love for our nation, and foster a deep and passionate devotion to our homeland. It calls for Filipinos to unite and stand together, fostering a sense of shared devotion and passionate commitment to our country.
