This was the last meal I had before flying home from the last business trip I took before the pandemic shut everything down. It was a lovely little place in Austin, Texas called the Buenos Aires Cafe, with excellent food. We’ll just last Friday, I finally booked travel and hotel for a business trip again for the first time since that trip in early 2020. And by a pure coincidence, it’s Texas again. San Antonio this time. I’m both very nervous and equally excited. And I won’t lie, there’s a Punk-Rock-Activist-Super-Contrarian part of me that helped me push past my worries and say, YES! to this particular trip. “What??? Oh, Texas don’t want trans people hanging around??!?? They don’t want us to be visible?? They don’t want trans youth to be supported and have visible, vocal role models?!?!??” Oh, I’m going. And I’ll be just as charming and visible and bold and OUT as I know how to be! (And, don’t worry boss, I’ll be very, very professional too!) Nothing makes me want to crash a party more than telling me I’m not invited.
