During the military coup in Chile on September 11, 1973 by General Augusto Pinochet, thousands of people were arrested and brought to the Santiago Sports Stadium to be processed.

Beloved folk singer Victor Jara was among the imprisoned and he kept playing the songs of resistence and solidarity at the stadium.

The fascist executioners then crushed both his hands so that he could no longer play the guitar, but he continued to sing in defiance until they shot him on September 16.

On Victor Jara's grave in Santiago there are always fresh flowers

Victor Jara's grave in the almost endless Cemeterio General in Santiago is only one out of so many victims of the fascists, but Chileans have placed a part of their hearts on this small spot.

Chile remembers, and there are always fresh roses and red carnations on Victor Jara's grave, together with amulets, hearts, rusty keys, rosaries and letters that people have placed there over the years.

You can kill a man but not his ideas, and the songs of Victor Jara will live on and continue to inspire and encourage workers all over the world.
