“Oh come on, it can’t be that bad.”
“Do you want a list? ‘cause I can give you a whole list. Starting with the fact that I think this puts you at the top of Kai’s shit list and I don’t think even I can do anything to fix that.”

“Isn’t he playing around with one of your uncles?” And one if the one he found the most unnerving if only because he couldn’t get a solid read on him. “I think I like my odds.”
“I think Valerian’s playing with him, really. Or that’s what I hear.” They didn’t hang out, but Phebe texted him here and there. Kept him up to date on family gossip. She’d actually called him for that one. “Sounds optimistic.”

“I’m aware. I’ve met your brother and I’ve met your aunts and uncles.” Sure, some of them were alright, but he wasn’t all that into women and most of the men on that side of the family veered into stab happy territory and Tucker was quite alright with avoiding that if he could help it.
“...I don’t think he considers himself a Delaney, but maybe Seamas would’ve been an okay fit.” He let out a sigh. “Too late now, though.” He knew he ought to give this a chance. It had worked for his parents after all. But that was easier said than done.

“I’m saying that I would rather end up shackled to a Delaney than I would a Fischer.” He didn’t have the same protections for Valencia and her kids as Fiero did and he knew that, of Belladonna’s kids, Fiero was the least likely to harm him.
“...I was gonna say that I think you drew the short stick on Delaneys, but you could’ve drawn shorter.” Could’ve done better, too. Cree and Hazel and even some of Fiero’s cousins would’ve been better. Of course, Cree was happy with Emil so that would’ve gone poorly for different reasons.

He wanted to say yes, that it absolutely did, but he wouldn’t put it past Kai to kill him over the arrangement. It was just how he operated and Tucker was smart enough to know that. “Have you met any of Val’s kids? There are only two that I can say with any certainty wouldn’t shoot you or me if it crossed their minds to do it. Maybe three, but it’s hard to say for sure.”
“I mean.. they’re my cousins and I think they know my mom is... well, I think most of them would know better than to come after me at least.” Aunt Val was trigger happy but mom could be creative when she wanted to be. “I’m still not sure this is a better option, but I guess it’s a matter of personal taste. Either way sounds like a bad situation for you.”

“Doesn’t sound like a good spot to be in, but maybe this will help get him off of that. Sort of takes away that option?” He was guessing, really, not one to dwell too much on what went on in Kai’s head. Didn’t seem worth the time or effort. “Could be worse. Could have ended up shackled to one of the Fischer kids.”
“Does it?” The question came out flat, void of any particular emotion. He wasn’t sure it did, really. Not if Kai felt like pushing his luck. He hoped he wouldn’t. The idea of Kai making an enemy of Jeff sent a spite of anxiety through him. But the comment drew a scoff and he tried to focus on that instead of everything else. “Is a Delaney really a better option that a Fischer?”

“What, is he in love with you or something? I thought he only really killed people he dated or that touched someone he viewed as his.” None of it was comforting, but he had also been raised by Jeff, so he couldn’t judge too much. “Not like I don’t have the time to earn that.”
“Or something? I... honestly don’t know. I tried to talk to him about it once but the conversation didn’t really go well for us so...” He shrugged. He’d made as much effort as he could on that front. “Doesn’t really seem fair to you.”

“Do you really think Kai will take it that badly? Because there is the whole no family rule and I don’t see your grandma taking too kindly to him breaking it.”
“I don’t know. Maybe. If anyone was going to push the line on that, I think it would be Kai.” He shook his head. “Besides, I don’t trust you and that’s not exactly an easy thing to change.” He was already on edge. Being out of the house was doable, but it made him nervous.
