Carnival of Terror

“Come one, come all!” a loud, deep, welcoming voice booms over the noise. “Welcome to Carnival Bizarre! The greatest show in the world!” When the other Kim brother you recognize from the posters – Namjoon – suddenly appears in the center of the ring in a burst of smoke, you feel surprised and a bit confused. The performers circle around him, and he holds his arms high, blood-red suit bright under the shine of the many spotlights. Although you cannot perfectly see him from this distance, you imagine that he is not only smiling, but that he is staring directly at you. A chill shimmies down your spine, and you want to look away, but you find that you cannot; your eyes are fixed on the magnanimous man in the swelling center of the encircling chaos.  Held in Namjoon’s hand is a cane, the top end of which is glowing bright like fire, and you watch as he twirls and points with it, following its path as the music crescendos, feeling a heavy weight in your chest that threatens to overwhelm, if only you could tear your eyes away and allow yourself to think clearly.  And then the music stops, and the lights shift off, save for a bright white spotlight that glows on Namjoon. He opens his empty hand, and something that looks like a burst of orange, glittering fire rises from his palm, shimmering in the air as it lifts up, up, up, to the top of the tent, so high above that you lose sight of it.  Vaguely, it feels as if tears are running from your eyes, staining your cheeks in warm streaks, but you cannot lift your hands to check, nor can you blink. You sit stunned and stiff as a board, staring up into the dark tent, waiting to be told where to look next. 

The Hooksborough Demon

To explain the anger that occurs within this place, imagine there is a constant noise just in the periphery that you cannot find a solution to, and you cannot shut out. Like somewhere, in the corner of your mind, there is a faucet drip, drip, dripping, and it is slowly driving you crazy. You cannot think straight because it will not stop drip, drip, dripping, and you are becoming more and more frustrated, more and more confused, more and more agitated. Somewhere in the back of your mind, it is almost as if there is a voice whispering, “Kill him, kill him, kill him,” and you stand seething, seeing red, wanting nothing more than to reach out, wrap your fingers around his throat and squeeze, squeeze, squeeze the fucking life out of him. That is how I felt, looking at Yoongi while he told me there was meant to be nothing, that he had never seen a café kiosk in any of the floorplans, much less in the location where I thought it should be, nor the location where it is now. And Jimin, standing there with a Polaroid between his fingers. Jimin, who had his fingers on two photos but never set one of them down in front of me or on camera. I wanted to bash his head against the counter, watch as his skull cracks and his grey matter and blood seep out, painting the laminated wood of the countertop. Whatever this surge of anger was caused by within the walls of this building was swirling inside me, pouring from my mouth and eyes, and I wanted them both dead from my bare hands. And then it stopped. I blinked, and it was gone. As if a mist within me had dissipated, and my mind was clear.

Dollhouse

It always feels weird to wake up in someone else's body. The discombobulation of space and time, adjusting for hand-eye coordination in a new skinsuit with different length limbs and overall proportions, acclimating as quickly as possible to carry out the tasks at hand. But he always adjusts quickly because he is the best. Nobody is better than Jung Hoseok. This assignment is the same as any assignment: find the target and either confiscate or terminate. This time, he has to do both. It just so happens that the target individual is in possession of the target information, allowing Hoseok to kill two birds with one stone and get back into his own body by dinnertime. Easy peasy. "What do you see?" a female voice asks inside Hoseok's head. Hoseok glances around, blinking heavily, unaccustomed to wearing glasses. He appears to be in a bedroom, plain walls with mahogany paneling encasing him. "I'm in a bedroom. Sitting up now." "The target will be here shortly, mister Jung. Meet him in the study, two doors down and to the right." "Got it." When Hoseok sits up, he feels a little dizzy, holding the host's hands in front of him. They're paler, wrinklier, and thicker than his own. Hoseok closes and opens them, turning them around for a moment; he always stops to marvel at the small things.

Collateral

And then you run. Your feet are sweaty and they slide against the floor, but you push forward as fast as you can. Once at the door, you shove at it with all your strength, and when it flies open, revealing Yoongi and Namjoon standing close, muttering sweetly, you gasp; you were not expecting to find the two of them this easily.  Namjoon stands to the left, gently cradling Yoongi's chin with both hands, and Yoongi stares up at him, hands lifted to Namjoon's sides. Despite Namjoon's more casual attire, Yoongi is in his usual black button-up and black slacks.  You mutter, "Yoo—" and halt in place when he turns his attention to you, smile faltering as his one visible eye holds you in its gaze.  Although Yoongi's hair is down and wild, you can see the black eyepatch covering his other eye. Above the patch are little black stitches that rise up his forehead, and you worry you might faint once more.  "Darling," Yoongi says, dropping his arms from Namjoon's sides to fully face you.  Namjoon's hands only fall to Yoongi's shoulders, and the look he gives you is indiscernible and maybe even a little cold.  "I'm sorry," is all you can say as your right leg twitches in an attempt to continue forward, held back by the full-body weight of your fear.

Devil With the Mint Hair

“Hmm,” you respond, stepping close enough that he could reach out and touch you. “My safe word is Jimin.” Yoongi tongues the inside of his cheek, then sits back, placing his palms against the white comforter on the bed. “Really?”  You chuckle as you nod and say, “Yup.” “You’re going to scream Jimin’s name when you want me to slow down or stop?” “Correct.” Yoongi laughs, clearly amused, then he nods and says, “Alright. Works for me. Any other boundaries? Things you’re not into?” Truthfully, at this moment, there is nothing you can think of. So you shrug and say, “Nothing as of now…but I’ll tell you if I think of something.” “You’ll moan my hookup’s name if you change your mind,” Yoongi mutters with a smirk.  “Yup.” Yoongi rolls his shoulders and then sits up straight before slowly beginning to stand. You take a step back, feeling nervousness sink in over the fact that this is really happening, especially with the way Yoongi stands tall with his shoulders square and his expression flat.  “Repeat your safe word for me,” Yoongi commands.  “Jimin,” you respond, much softer than intended.  The corner of Yoongi’s mouth rises for a split second, then he squints as if he is disgusted by what he sees. Instinctively, you take another step back.  Yoongi is quick as a serpent, hand snapping up to grip onto your jaw and make you gasp – startling you.  “Where do you think you’re going?” he asks in a sharp snarl.  Although you move your lips, all you are able to mutter is vowels, unsure what to say.  “You’re mine, baby girl. You don’t so much as move unless I command it.”

Truth or Dare

Suddenly, you are eager to touch and taste him, uncertain whether you want to continue playing the game. Taehyung catches you staring and smirks, then he pats his legs and asks, "Truth or dare?" with his eyes on you. "Dare," you breathe softly as you get onto your hands and knees to turn and crawl back to his lap. He appears to have scooted a few inches away. "I dare you face me," Taehyung says, lifting a brow. "Straddle my lap." You continue to crawl and cage in Taehyung's legs with your hands and knees until you have nowhere more to go and sit, settling down on his lap. Even sitting up straight you are just slightly shorter than Taehyung, and being this close, you fight the urge once more to kiss him, licking your lips while gazing hungrily at his. When Taehyung mimics the motion, licking his lips in return, you lift your gaze to his, feeling shy.  "Don't worry, pretty," Taehyung teases softly as he wraps his arms around your waist, "I saw that. You want to kiss me so badly, don't you?" With a shrug, you respond, "I haven't picked truth, so who's to say?" "Cheeky," Taehyung mutters with a wide smile, then he nibbles on his lower lip, pulling your attention once more and making you wonder how he tastes.  "God, you should see them, hyung," Taehyung groans loudly enough for his voice to travel without taking his eyes off you. "They can't stop looking at my lips." You blink rapidly, attempting to pull yourself from the trance that Taehyung is clearly becoming a master at putting you under, and you turn to your boyfriend, who stares at you with wide, eager eyes.  "Truth or dare, babe?" "Truth." "What are you imagining, right now?" Hoseok chuckles and shakes his head. "So many things," he mutters.  "Elaborate," you urge.

Hali’s Favorite Fics of 2022

Hi - in honor of 2022 coming to a close, here is a list of the things I read that are my favorite fics this year. These are fics that I either re-read multiple times, or completely blew me away the first time I read it and made me think about it for hours later.

I read upward of 100 fics this year, so if you don't see your fic that I've reviewed on here, please don't take it personally. Everything I've read this year is wonderful but these stories in particular have sat in my brain for so long I need to charge them rent. Also - I haven't finished reviewing some of these so... don't cancel me if you see your work on this list but I've never said anything djfhgdfrgihud

Also - sorry for so many repeat writers. As you can tell, there are a few people whose style really call to me and whose craft I deeply cherish and admire. Please consider sharing your thoughts with the writers below if you enjoy their work, they are amazing!

6. Something I remember vividly from one of your fics: The scene from The Hooksborough Demon where MC watches the footage Yoongi shot of the two of them having afternoon sex at the hotel while Jimin was out for a swim. That scene will just randomly flash across my mind like a ray of afternoon sun.

hmmmmm, honestly, i wish Dollhouse had a bigger following. but people here don't seem to like mxm quiet as much. or maybe they don't like infidelity lmao. it's a mess of a story but i love it very much.

Would you say collateral is your favorite work of art or do you’ve another that is more special to you?

ooooh, anon!!!! wow, what a question.

this really made me stop and think, but you know what........................yes. i would say that. at this point, with how i have been trying to build the world and the characters, i think it is my favorite. i pour a lot of myself into that mc, too.

i hold a very special place in my heart for The Hooksborough Demon and Dollhouse too, tho. they're both pretty experimental (for me) with one being horror and the other being sci-fi, and they were spawn from the same (literal) fever dream (i had covid and was VERY SICK and idk why i was writing thru it all; i don't actually remember writing some of the updates!!!)

but my writing has also evolved a lot, and i feel like Collateral is the best version of me, right now. and it is the story that i crave to write the most.

It took me about nine hours haha but there were frequent pauses for snacks, human interaction and moral support lmao. The best part was I was basically reading excerpts to my mom (I’m with her this week bc she’s having surgery) and she was also very into it. When 💩 really started hitting the fan I was like “oh it was her phone the whole time!!” and mom was like “I fucking knew it! I told you!!” 😂🤣😂

It was really good horror/drama/thriller for real and yes I’m ready for a sequel and double yes tell me which fic is the found footage horror bc I’ll be sitting around a lot this week and I should be working on wips but Lmao I’d rather get fucked up by someone else’s writing 🫠😂

i have so many thoughts. WOULD I DO IT JUSTICE, ANON??? it seems to be that he is partially blind and she is deaf, and iiiiiiiii think that it's incredibly beautiful representation but i would be pretty nervous about not being able to do it justice.

the sci-fi aspect, though??? god, i would love to take a stab at it. being able to see something only through a camera is something i did in The Hooksborough Demon, and it was something i loved to explore.

i'll add it to my "maybe" pile haha.

I’m back in my hometown for a bit and we went to our local mall to walk around. Most of the stores are shuttered and it was so empty that I couldn’t help but think of THD - like, if I saw a playground that was never there before, I was gonna run for it! 🤣💕

Hi okay so I compiled a very long list of both new and pretty old fics on both Tumblr and ao3. Some of this I have reviewed, some I haven't, it's a really heavy mix of things. I will say the one thing really lacking were the Namjoon and Hoseok fics - they are much harder to find in the supernatural/fantasy genre so if literally anyone has recs please send them my way so I can read! As the only known surviving member of “The Hooksborough Three,” I have decided to try to figure out what happened to my friends, Yoongi Min and Jimin Park. Although there has been an ongoing investigation for the last year, the cops have not found anything that may help locate either of them. 

It is for this reason that I am going to use this forum to outline everything in case someone can pick up on any clue that I may miss in the process. Maybe someone reading this knows something more about this legend, and they can help me figure it out. 

There have been a lot of questions surrounding the disappearance of my friends. I am not really sure how to address any of them directly; I just want to try to make sense of everything. Although this is still an open investigation, the footage has finally been released back into my custody, so I am going to watch it for the first time and detail everything I see here.

The legend goes: If you see The Hooksborough Demon, you will exit this plane of existence, or dimension, or whatever, and you will enter his. Or, you will die, I guess. I don't really know. 

We all thought it was stupid, which is why we went into the abandoned mall in the first place. But Yoongi was behind the camera and claimed to see weird shit, and then Jimin watched the footage later, and…well, things happened. They are both gone. So, for this reason, I am not going to be posting any clips here. Instead, I will be transcribing everything I see, and attempting to piece together the events that took place afterward through old journals and texts. If by chance their disappearances were linked to what we captured in the video, I should still be able to get through all of the footage before whatever happened to them happens to me.

At this point, I am not sure whether I believe in the urban legend or not, but I would rather not take my chances and expose anyone else to it. I guess we will find out in time if anything happened to the cops who watched it. I told them not to.

In the meantime, please do not break into the Hooksberry Mall property and go filming like we did. If you want to know what happened there, I will do my best to detail it here. Please just stay the hell away from that place. Learn from our mistakes.

this chapter note is so real:

this chapter is a mess. whew! you may get frustrated with how i decide mc feels throughout this one, but she's my character, and i want her to be a little broken. 

like................................man, after dealing with readers hating my Boy Blue mc, i became very protective of this one. there seems to be this strange need for reader characters to be strong always and perfect and super emotionally intelligent about all situations and omnisciently wise, i just cannot stress enough how much that is not how i present my characters. they are flawed as fuck and sometimes they are learning and growing and doing their best, but sometimes they just get worse.

anyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyywayyyyyyyyyy hehe enough of that tangent.

omg foreshadowing in paragraph THREE LMAOOOO. woof. i was really like "here we are kids, no sugarcoating this shit HAVE FUN!!!"

(how do we feel after learning about Jimin and the bees? and Yoongi's parents? and how deep all of this goes???)

this is absolutely going to be tmi, but the "show me how his highness fucks you" bit came from a dream i once had (?!?!?!!?!?) basically...........i was fully clothed, straddling a very naked man whose name rhymes with hamboon and he kept saying "show me how oppa (?!?!?!?) fucks you" referring to someone whose name rhymes with boongi and i literally woke up in that moment like UMMMMM WHAT THE FUCK. so yeah. uhhhhhhhh hahahaha 😅😅😅 thanks brain for helping me write Collateral. (i feel like this might seem creepy to confess but tbh my dreams are extremely vivid and include all number of people whose content i ingest daily, not just them. usually they are more nightmarish and less sexy. see: the hooksborough demon, which is a fic born of my fucked up dreams. also i have literally never genuinely called a Korean man oppa before...and, if anything, i'm his noona lmaooooo.)

ooohhhhhh i found what might be considered a teeeensy tiny inconsistency with a later chapter (18, to be exact.) i wonder if i will remember to bring it up when the time comes. i personally think it is fine, but it depends on interpretation, perhaps.

even tho i am aware at how well i weave together certain pov scenes with the main fic, it is still nice to see glimpses of it. like here, with this little bit:

You tip your head and Yoongi stands, holding up a finger to excuse himself as he says, "Jiminah, I could never be mad at you. Tell me what is happening. What do you need?"

this chapter is so messy hahaha. i adore it very much.

ALSO THIS:

Instead, you let go of Yoongi's hands and sit back against the cold leather as your eyes trail around to the window. There is a voice at the back of your mind telling you that Yoongi is lying, that he could not possibly love you, that nobody could possibly love you. It nags and nags, threatening to tear your heart asunder and leave you to bleed out, pathetic and empty, for all the world to see.  But you know, deep down, that he means it. At least, to some small extent. Perhaps not the full-blown love that causes men to wage war and pen sonnets, but a smaller, gentler love that feels like sunshine breaking through the clouds on a cool autumn morning. That love, you can come to accept, you think. 

actually made me emotional. woof. i genuinely teared up at my own writing what the fuck.

this is the song Namjoon is humming when they return to the mansion. it's not on the playlist because i wasn't sure it really fit on there.

man. that smut scene is fun. i never really see mmf threesome scenes written out that include both men also having sex with each other, and have been trying to make that more of a thing here. there will be a good one in 21. (i'm sure there are others throughout later chapters but tbh smut scenes aren't the most memorable for me, when i think of the events of each of the chapters.)

The restaurant Yoongi brings you and Namjoon to is a dinky sushi spot in some back alley downtown. You always enjoy these places the most—the unassuming-on-the-outside, amazing-on-the-inside restaurants that Yoongi seems to prefer. 

The three of you are led to a private room, and before you have a chance to sit on the thick, red velvet cushions which line the back wall, servers are coming to fill glasses with rice wine and water, and inform you that dinner will be ready shortly. Yoongi must have called ahead. The servers exit, and anxiety settles in.

There is probably no need to feel nervous since it makes sense that Yoongi would already know everything about your past. But what if he was directly involved in what happened to you back then? What if Yoongi’s family was in charge of the honey bees who sent you to kill Seungri? You are not sure you can handle the ramifications of everything being a setup from the start, knowing just how little control you have had this entire time. 

You have also compartmentalized the entire event to the extent that telling truth from fabrication is difficult, and you are unsure how much of the dream you can actually trust. It has been years since you dreamt so vividly about the penthouse, and you have not thought much about the honey bees or the queen in so long. 

Once the three of you are settled down and the serving staff leaves, Namjoon busies himself with putting slices of sashimi onto your and Yoongi’s bowls of rice and pushing side dishes in front of the two of you. It feels oddly domestic, being squished between the two of them while one of them dotes on you, but it helps calm your nerves.

10. Has a piece of writing ever “haunted” you? Has your own writing haunted you? What does that mean to you?

yes, actually! while writing The Hooksborough Demon i was having some intense dreams. and sometimes i have similar dreams from time to time. but, also, the more haunting imagery came from my dreams in the first place, so perhaps i’ve just haunted myself by putting it into writing.

haunting, to me, can be a lot of things. but i closely associate it to the feeling of something always lingering on the periphery, just in the blind spot, waiting for you to be fully aware. sometimes you’re never aware. sometimes you can’t shake the feeling of something unexplainable giving you the feeling it does. sometimes it makes itself know when you least expect it to. i love when it makes itself known. except i did dream once about the scene with jimin’s intestines and it was pretty ínstense. lots of blood.

18. Choose a passage from your writing. Tell me about the backstory of this moment. How you came up with it, how it changed from start to end.

since i already brought up THD, and we’re talking about haunting, i’ll choose a passage from that! i’m a huge fan of found footage horror films, and i wanted to make a story where you can only see the monster through a lens, so initially only Yoongi saw it, but now the reader is rewatching the footage he shot, and she sees it too. (and if you see it, legend has it, you’ll die soon…)

oh my god.

it’s so tall. holy shit. Yoongi sees it and he screams. jesus christ he screams so loud. oh my god, i think it…it looks like it turned at the sound of yoongi screaming. it’s just a big black mass, i can’t make out a clear shape, but where i assume there’s a head, it seemed to respond to yoongi’s voice. like it realized he can see it.

and now i can see it.

i get night terrors and often it’s not a being i can clearly see, but a feeling and a big, smokey massive being that makes me feel like i’m suddenly being suffocated for being near. i thought that being would make a good monster. (someone asked if it’s like the beings in hellbound, but it’s bigger and more…shapeless.) nothing was changed while writing it because, unlike my other writing, this was just reader typing a stream of consciousness for what she saw. (the story is mostly a lot more concise than this passage…but not always.)
