this is a tricky question that i actually asked myself a number of times while writing this series me, to me: why are they making out all the time?????????? and i have a lot of very complicated, over-thinking feelings about it. so bear with me through this answer that's probably longer than you wanted.

first: please please please always feel free to read any john i write as ace whether he’s tagged ace or not--because i probably do, too!

writing ace stuff, particularly ace get-togethers, is very personal and often emotionally intense/draining for me--and that wasn't what i wanted to experience while writing this series. i wrote the series simply as a way to process and play with the content of the episodes.

there are definitely going to be some of these where john could easily be seen as ace! however, i don't think any of them are about john being ace--so i probably won't tag them that way.

(tangent: i don't necessarily think ace!john sees asexuality as that big of an identifier for himself, so it's not always the first thing on his mind.)

most of the fic in the series are first kiss scenes. if you're good with ace kissing (which, i think a canon compliant ace!john would be), there's no reason they couldn't be ace!john! there are more than a few fic here where they do not kiss and I will likely tag those ones similarly to how I tag my qpr-verse. only a handful will receive an m or e rating not that those couldn't be ace!John, too!

so. tldr: you can probably read most of these as ace!john, but they aren't written about asexuality the way my other fic are.

if you (or anyone else!) would be interested or want warnings for particular content, i can add extra aro/ace commentary when i post them to tumblr and in the notes at the end of the fics on ao3. just let me know. i’m always 100% ready to talk about aro/ace john ldskjfa;

i have an extra planned for chapter 3 but i have to wait until chapter 4 is out to post it 😔 I have an unspoken rule for SLA that I can't break and I can shatter it completely when chap 4 is done

I actually have some commentary regarding this chapter because I learned some interesting stuff from Piper’s POV in HOH before Leo got sent to Ogygia—Rick shouldn’t have put so much subtext in these books if he didn’t want me drawing connections. Just sayin.

That fight with Piper and Khione was my Roman empire—the entire line about how love can help mothers lift cars to save their children lives in my mind rent-free—and when Khione froze Piper’s arm when she lunged at her, the love Piper felt for her friends in that moment literally melted the ice. It’s not even subtext at this point, y’all. It melted it. Love burns.

EXTRA: Something Left Ajar Chapter 1

Leo, Piper, and Jason are about to embark on their first quest.

Leo is the first to mount Festus (naturally), and when he's sure he won't fall on his ass, turns to beckon his friends as they hover at the base of his dragon.

Both Piper and Jason hesitate when Festus shakes his bronze-plated hide at the intrusion (“Click click click?” “Sorry, boy!”), but Leo gently pats his back to calm him down.  The crowd of campers continues buzzing as he extends his hand down to his friends, and Piper's shoots out right after before it stops to waver.

There’s no telling what she looks like when she turns to Jason with a look, but it’s enough to make him rush forward to give her a boost.

They both smile when she firmly grasps his hand, their grins a little wobbly. He ignores that to help pull her up by his side. Jason follows, not breaking a sweat as he magically hovers to bring up the rear in at her back. Leo ignores that too, a hundred percent not jealous.

All three of them aboard, he hefts himself ahead to give them room.  "So if Jason’s in danger, we just cut our losses and run, right?"

Piper smacks him at his back with the hand not holding Festus in a death grip. "Leo!"

"Relax, I'm kidding!" he wheezes as he continues shuffling forward to the reins. Definitely not to escape her wrath or anything. “And what, he’s the one with the fancy flight powers!”

“Says Johnny Storm.” quips Jason.

“Silencio, Superman.” he huffs.

“We stick together.” Piper says firmly. He feels her death grip shift to the back of his jacket.

“Now and forever!” Festus rises from the ground.

“Prepare for trouble!”

“And make it d—”

“Oh my God will you please both shut up.”

They spread their wings, and take to the skies with laughter.

My entire hang-up with this chapter was that I had no idea how to answer the big question that’s posed toward the midpoint. I literally stopped right there 8 months ago and went about my merry way. Who would have thought that re-reading the books would solve everything, surely not me 🥴🫡

so parts of the next chapter are done and can hypothetically be posted, but all of the scene works better as one cohesive chapter. it might take me a little while to get the entire thing up (say 2-4 days) but i just wanted to know what y'all would prefer.
