Summary:

Lance was in pain. Lance was hurting. Lance was growing a garden in his lungs. It was choking him, killing him slowly. But he, being the stubborn boy he is, refused to tell anyone. Why would he? He was expendable, right? He could afford to be replaced. Telling the team would only worry them and put another burden on their shoulders. Besides, they had a galaxy to save, they had no time for Lance’s little issues. He’d just do what he would always do, bite down and bear it with a smile.

And seeing Lance do that to himself was eating Keith up from the inside.

It’s not like this was easy on Keith either. The fact that Lance had contracted this god-awful disease means that he loved someone. And that someone didn’t love him back. Sure, Keith’s own tattoos confused him but at least he could live with a body covered in flower tattoos. Lance can’t live with lungs full of roses.

Lance was the heart.

Lance held them together. Lance made sure there was enough for everyone. Always going around making sure everyone was okay. Putting smiles on reluctant faces.

And that was a strength.

Lance was the strongest.

But he did it alone.

Keith was on autopilot. He knew he was fighting the bot and he was able to avoid every single strike, but his eyes always wandered to Lance. His bot was still on the far end of the room and advancing rapidly as Lance struggled to fire in a straight line. If anyone knew anything about Lance, it was that one of the things he’s most proud of is his aim, straight and true and never misses.

Well, until today it would seem.

His bot was growing dangerously close and Lance had begun to show panic, eyes wide and teeth pressed tightly as he whispered a string of curses and kept missing.
