tell me about the timeloop! i love a timeloop!

That's one of my caps rookies fic! The first sentence of my plan for it is "Hendrix Lapierre gets stuck in a timeloop and has to deal with Feelings" which about sums it up i think.

The whole idea is that Laps wakes up in a timeloop but the catch is this isn't the first timeloop he's been in, he got stuck in one before during his rookie years which he solved by winning his first game back from injury so he assumes he can solve this one with Hockey as well. Surprise!! It's actually about his feelings for one (1) Connor McMichael, who funnily enough, is acting differently from loop to loop. Wonder why that is.

Here's an excerpt from it under the cut:

Hendrix is getting really tired of waking up alone. That first night the empty bed felt awful out of guilt, anger about the situation, the argument, but now it just feels lonely. He’s gotten spoiled when he’s been called up, living with Connor at home and ending up in the same bed as him more often than not on roadtrips. 

Now he wakes up cold, without spiky hair pressing into his neck and solid line of a six foot hockey player pressed up against him and he misses it like an ache, more so than he did in Hershey when there was always the next callup or the offseason, however far away to look forward to. Stuck here he doesn’t have any certainty to hold on to.

Which, wait, that's not really true, this whole day is almost certain for him at this point, knowing what his teammates are going to say and do, but it’s not the certainty he wants.

ALSO it's not really payneland centric, but anyway it was maybe the most emotional any fic has made me in a long time

This fic has everything: excellent writing, developing relationship, rituals, first time, Beltane, a hot priest. This is already a fandom classic and now I've finally read it, I can confirm it's very good! Read the rest of the series too!

Everyone's alive and basically the supernatural version of the Men in Black. I love the whole series, but this installment has the boys' first meeting, Edwin insisting he doesn't need a new partner, office gossip and an intriguing case. The prequel also has palasaki and background catwin! Anyway, I'm obsessed with this AU.

Partridge in a Pear Tree by Vamillepudding

Cinderella AU! Charles is basically a Disney Princess and Edwin is Secretly The Prince, it's wonderful. I also loved the worldbuilding and nods to old school Cinderella lore, like the gift-giving tree. So charming, highly recommended.

Wunderkammer by dear_monday, two_ravens

Edwin and Charles (and later Crystal) are functionally immortal and running a magical museum. This fic has a fantastic sense of place (the Athenaeum is a character in its own right) and an intriguingly gothic horror vibe with its sentient exhibits, doors into other planes and unnerving nonchalance about disappearing staff and guests. I would probably die, but I would absolutely go there.

The pince-nez fic! Charles finds a pair of glasses that show him a person's desires. Then he looks at Edwin. It goes about as well as you'd expect. It was inspired by this wonderful comic by technically-human so check that out too!

Vampire AU! The boys meet while Charles is dying so Vampire!Edwin agrees to turn him. The story is ongoing, but so far it's been focusing on Charles coping with being a fledgling vampire. Compelling.

Hello dear Anon! Thank you so much, that means a lot. And yes, oh yes, do I have some recs for you!

1. The Scenic Route by DontOffendTheBees (the one where Edwin Goes On A Train), and also Outside Looking In by the same author (the one where the boys have a heart-to-heart in their human disguises, as observed by an actual curious human), simply because @dont-offend-the-bees write Charles and Edwin so very well. Charles, especially: I am in love with how they voice him, how they catch the very core of his language and mannerisms, and I shall be recommending their stories to everyone, all the time, every chance I get.

2. A Heaven Like They Talk About by LikeMmmCookies. Charles and Edwin, while facing off yet another witch, are cursed to become human again. This means: human bodies, human weaknesses, and Charles having a Tiny Breakdown every time Edwin drifts too close to him. Rated M, this fic is cleverly structured and amazingly written. If you're in the mood for some good plot and thick pining and intimacy, look no further.

3. Of a youth who loves me by Aliquis (@riceinthechurch). I'll in fact recommend their entire series here, but even as a standalone, this story stayed with me for a long time after. It is Charles, treading the waters of love and guilt and religion. It is him, willing to sacrifice everything to make sure Edwin never has to go back to Hell again. It is beautiful.

4. dumb of heart by bananzie. Something cute and sweet about Charles falling in love with Edwin through five different touches, plus the one time he realised magic wasn't too bad as well. If you're looking for something soft and lovely and romantic, this might just lift your spirits!

My Notes: This one is truly a work of art with its prose and story composition. I have never seen The Quiet Place, but damn did this fic make me want to.

Letters addressed to the fire By: zmorak @zmorak Rating: T Tags: AU - WW1, Hurt No Comfort, Diary/Journal, Angst, Slow Burn Summary: Diary excerpts of Lance Corporal Edwin Nicholas Payne (1900-1989), British Foreign Correspondent, Journalist, and Poet, dated between August 15th and November 1st, 1916, Somme. *** You, Charles, may be the best man and the kindest soul I have ever had the luck to meet. I will not delude myself so much as to think that we will see each other in old age, but I do dearly hope that in the years to come, we will meet again; with both of us standing on our own two feet, we'll share a bottle of scotch, and reminisce with grief-ridden fondness about this inferno that brought us together. My Notes: This fic made me cry, and not many fics do that. The day I first recommended this in the server everyone reported back that they cried. It was a very memorable day lol. Really a beautiful piece of work. I love historical fiction and the quality of the prose is truly spectacular.

Loud Bark, Deep Bite By: hyperiion Rating: M Tags: Case Fic, Fluff and Angst, First Kiss, Protective Charles Rowland Summary: Charles didn’t mind being underestimated. When he told people he was the brawn of the detective duo, they usually gave a small, placating smile. Charles would take a hundred of those moments for just one of these: when the demon, ghoul, or witch of the week gave him an appraising glance and found him wanting, only to find that ghost-strength is so much more than appearances. A year after the events in Port Townsend, the Dead Boy (and One Psychic Girl) Detective Agency has fallen into a rhythm with cases. A mage kidnapping ghosts upends their rhythm, and with it, Charles' bottled-up feelings. My Notes: Ghost soup! In this case fic, the crew faces a mage kidnapping ghosts! I particularly like the final confrontation because Charles gets to be all heroic.

Nothing Left to Hide By: RoseGanymede95 @oxbellows Rating: NR Tags: Hell Aftermath, Arachnophobia, Protective Charles Rowland Summary: “You’re-” Charles has to stop before any more words can come through, because another round of sobbing overtakes him, forcefully enough Edwin thinks a living boy might break his ribs like this. “You’re. Scared.” Charles tries again, and the words sound like they’re being punched out of him, each one a broken, jagged thing, “Of. Spiders." Grief crashes down on Edwin like a physical weight. This is about Hell. My Notes: Charles having a breakdown over Edwin's fear of spiders is not something I knew I needed, but it is spectacular.

Of a youth who loves me By: Aliquis @riceinthechurch Rating: T Tags: Friends to Lovers, Codependency, Protective Charles Rowland, First Kiss, Religious Guilt Summary: The boy Charles rescued from Hell, so frail without his waistcoat and ridiculous britches, had been nearly unrecognizable as his best friend. Charles would do anything, compromise any dignity, to make sure Edwin never has to return to the pit. He just has to figure out how. My Notes: Charles loves Edwin so much that he tries to make a deal with a demon to sacrifice himself instead and it is just so in character (and dumb) of him. I love Edwin being super pissed about it too because that is also perfectly in character!

Overloaded By: babyseraphim @babyseraphim Rating: T Tags: Chronic Pain, Hurt/Comfort, Protective Charles Rowland Summary: Before Edwin had been strapped to Esther’s torture table and very rudely used as a magical battery, he had been under the impression that the use of iron was the only way to inflict pain upon ghosts in the mortal realm. However, because he was Edwin Payne and the universe seemed intent on making him pay for his ridiculously on-the-nose surname for all of eternity, those rules apparently did not apply to him. My Notes: Edwin dealing with long term pain after Esther's torture table is not something I had even considered until I read this fic and let me tell you the concept has stuck with me. Especially since (spoilers) the pain doesn't go away. This is something that Edwin has to just deal with. The way that Charles assures Edwin that he isn't a bother and that they will stick together through this is heart warming

Promises & Voids By: NuriaSchnee @nuria-schnee Rating: M Tags: Romance, Angst with a Happy Ending, Hurt/Comfort, Sickfic, Temporary Character Death, Protective Charles Rowland Summary: Edwin gets hit with a "death" curse, which eats his soul away until he disappears completely. With no way to stop it or break it, Edwin spends his last hours with Charles, and makes him promise that he will continue their work in the agency without him. My Notes: You want to cry? Here's a fic for you. It does have a happy ending to make up for it, but DAMN that first chapter broke my heart. Charles holding onto a fading Edwin until he disappears is just HEARTBREAKING!

remind me that i am a fool By: blladnna Rating: G Tags: AU - Canon Divergence, Hurt/Comfort, Angst, Protective Charles Rowland, Hurt Edwin Payne Summary: When Charles saw the boy curled up at the end of the hallway, his first thought was that it couldn’t possibly be his best mate. The figure had none of Edwin’s prim and proper urgency, lacked his drive, his grace. Whoever the boy at the end of the hallway was, his spirit had been truly and thoroughly broken. As he approached, Charles saw that he was wrong—that boy was Edwin, just not any version of him Charles had ever seen. “Please go away, Charles," Edwin said. "You’re being cruel.” or When Edwin goes back to Hell, instead of being torn apart on loop, he suffers through the only pain worse. Watching it happen to Charles. My Notes: I really love fics that make Hell worse and this one fits the bill. Charles trying to convince Edwin that he is *real* this time is just so good.

By: taableclofh Rating: M Tags: AU - Canon Divergence, Angst with a Happy Ending, Love Confessions, First Kiss, Orpheus and Eurydice Summary: Charles never knew what the ending to Orpheus and Eurydice’s story was. Never bothered to finish it. Never felt the need to, did he? All he knows is that he cannot exist in a world where Edwin is not there beside him. My Notes: Getting out of hell is a lot harder in this fic. Edwin not remembering anything between his different reincarnations after his various deaths leads to some interesting development for Charles as we get to see him change while Edwin stays the same.

The Case of the Broken Orb By: JJ_Queenie Rating: NR Tags: Love Confessions, Inebriated Edwin, Protective Charles Rowland, Dreamsharing, Hurt/Comfort, Drunken Shenanigans, Drunken Confessions Summary: Edwin breaks an orb that shows a person's greatest dream/desire and absorbs its powers, so now whenever someone touches him he sees their greatest dreams. Unfortunately the dream energy is also making him incredibly loopy and he is doing things and spouting out things he never normally would. His friends try to scramble to find a cure while also making sure Edwin doesn't get into too much trouble, soon finding that an inebriated Edwin is a lot harder to contain than they initially expected. My Notes: Usually, I don't go for humorous fics, but this one is HILARIOUS! Edwin without any inhibitions is a sight to behold! But this fic is not only funny, it's really heartfelt <3

I've just read a wonderful Payneland fanfic - "With him I love" from Aliquis (Part 2 in a series, you should read "Of a youth who loved me" first).

In this story the boys watch Hadestown together and Charles claims he wouldn’t have turned around in Orpheus' place. Edwin disagrees.

Now I can’t get this scenario out of my head. If that would have been Charles' only way to get Edwin out of hell - Charles going in front of Edwin, not looking back, Edwin not able to speak (shouldn't be too easy), would Charles manage not to turn around? What if he heard monsters attacking Edwin? Would he be able to keep going?

I'm so obsessed with the idea, I think I won’t get it out of my head before writing a fic about it.

5. What’s a fic idea you’ve had that you will never write?

ohhh i don't like to close the door on anything forever BUT the first thing i ever wanted to write for robotter came about during worlds in 2021. i outlined the whole tournament while it was going down & while i started storyboarding certain scenes during that time, i don't think that first iteration will see the light of day. like for one thing i have since super changed how i write robo, who was the pov character in that. i will never give up shouting out latvia in my fic & i'm sure at some point i will write a latvia worlds timestamp, but that first fic idea is doa.

6. Are there any fics from others you reread all the time?

i reread everything!! i am a serial re-reader!!! i am also so sad that ao3 is down so i can't do my usual excessively cited sources. eta after going through my downloaded fics on the books app & getting titles and authors names, if not links: þæt wæs god hláford by chevalric, michigan's in the rearview by aliquis, later's better than never by canary, odour by coffeehound91 (more recent, but super good!!), quarters halves and wholes by ladyeggplant.

8. What project(s) are you currently working on?

i just sent in my small fic for @inrareformfest late late last night, and i'm currently wrapping up my second Big Project for @notacowfest. i'm also looking over my outline & worldbuilding notes for my hbb fic so i can get that going as soon as my starsfest fic is done!! other than that: i'm slowly working on a tydel/otter fic that'll probably serve as a backdoor pilot to some eventual dellyotterkennedi throuple fic, + working on my outlines for a robotter bachelor au & an outline for a robotter fic that i expected to do for the starsfest & then realized i had too much to say to be able to get it in under the deadline w my other fills. my baseball au & timeloop fic + a robotter romcom longfic idea are the Big Outlines i've been workshopping for a couple months now, and i'm sure one of those will come up in the queue after my hbb fic w some <10k fic coming in throughout the rest of those ideas.

Otter huffed out a little laugh over the line, but he still sounded more annoyed than amused. The part of Jason that was, despite himself, governed a little bit by alpha instincts ached for him. Jason tried to remind himself not to ache, but that didn't do anything. Otter wasn't here in the hotel with Jason anyway. What he couldn't scent couldn't hurt them. “I haven’t thought about kids, period, this much before. It sucks.” Jason rolled his head on his pillow to look over at his phone, where he could hear Otter sigh over speaker. It was a good reminder, he guessed. Jason might’ve been annoyed that what was happening to Otter was rushing the pace of their relationship — even if they’d both seemed to agree to pretend they couldn’t read between the lines of what they meant to each other. But Otter had space to be a lot more annoyed at this rushing; it was his body turning on him, making all these too-soon conversations crop up when they weren't even close enough to let their scents do all the talking. Jason dropped the attempted levity. , “I haven't either," he said, then added, maybe a little too honestly, "But, uh — I'm here to talk to you whenever you are thinking about them." "Oh yeah?" He could hear a shift in Otter's tone. All wry and breathless, like he was somewhere between touched and aroused. It hit Jason in the part of him that wasn't governed by alpha instincts but was, despite itself, governed a little by Otter. "Yeah, man," he said. "I always want you to come to me when you're feeling big stuff. That's … that's what we're here for, to each other."
