Cleansing and Blessing your witches runes
There are several ways to cleanse your runes. You can place them in a container with salt or circle them with salt overnight to draw out the negative energies.
You can use a singing bowl or bells to cleanse your runes using sound energies.
You can smoke with a smudge stick, incense, or the smoke from a candle flame. Sage smoke will cancel out all energies both negative and positive, so I would suggest following up with another herb that promotes positive energy such as ceder or sweetgrass.
*Blessings created by Hexen* (see in sources)
General Blessing
Stone and symbol let secrets unfold:
Messages from ancestors and guardians be told:
May gentle insite guide every word:
So sacred wisdom may be heard:
By a heart open and ready to recieve
Divin Guidance to me conceive.
Pentogram Blessing
Spirit of the North, bless these runes with the stabilizing presence of Earth.
Spirit of the East, bless these runes with the freeing presence of the Air.
Spirit of the South, bless these runes with the flaming passion of Fire.
Spirit of the West, bless these runes with the every-changing flow of Water.
Spirit of the Center, bless these runes with the all-encompassing power of the Universe.
You can charge your runes much the same way as you would crystals. You can leave them in the moon light or sun light. You could sleep with the runes under your pillow. You can hold them and picture your energies flowing into them and charging them with your own energies. You could place them in a container and bury them in Earth for a few days. (When I Earth charge I like to place them in a plastic bag and bury in a planter's pot.)
These runes should be stored in a container made from, wood, glass, ceramic, or stone. If you choose a bag it should be made from natural fibers or materials such as silk, cotton, or leather. You want to keep outside energies from touching these runes. For example, Glass is less porous than plastic so it will block more energies. You want to keep the materials as natural as you can, connecting these runes to the Earth and elements. I store mine in a pine box with a cotton pad on the bottom. I also put a citrine, clear quartz, and and opalite crystal in with my runes to keep them cleansed, charged and attuned for me.
When you feel the need to cleanse and bless your runes, do so. You will know when they start to feel as if they need it. I like to do mine once a month during the new moon. A fresh start each month.

Forensic Engineers Sulphur
Forensic Engineers Sulphur
Every year throughout the United States, severe storm damage caused by hail, wind, floods, and storms that can include lightning, tornados, heavy snow and ice, and hurricanes cause billions of dollars in damage to residential and commercial properties. Website: https://www.emaengineers.com
Tumblr media
In the past year alone, the U.S. was hit with eight major storm and climate-related events that each caused more than a billion dollars in property damage. Add in more localized storms, the bill for damage easily tops $10 billion a year.
Many times after a storm, property owners and management companies are not even aware that their property has been damaged. For example, over time, unrecognized storm damage can continue to deteriorate a roof system, leading to even greater problems in the future, problems that can negatively affect both the usability and value of a property leading to premature aging, deterioration, and property loss.
NIRC certified contractors are trained and certified to handle every size and type of damage situation. When a storm or other catastrophe causes damage or possible damage to a property, it is important to contact a Certified NIRC Contractor to get an immediate assessment of damage.
Every property owner should know that NIRC Certified Contractors have rapid access to the resources and technical skills needed to respond to the full range of potential storm damage.
And be sure to obtain a professional assessment of property damage – before preparing an insurance claim.
In doing such an assessment before preparing a claim, there are a number of items that a Certified NIRC Contractor will consider:
Roof Repairs and Installation
The roofing system is one of the most vulnerable to storm damage, because so many factors can have an impact on a roof. An inspection of the roof is based on a number of key indicators, whether the roof has been hit by high winds, a downed tree, a catastrophic hailstorm, or even a lightning strike.
A tree on the roof, or roof or wall sections that have been blown open by a storm, are some of the most obvious signs of potential damage and risk. Safety comes first, so stay out of the building until a contractor has examined it for structural damage. Signs of storm damage to a roof can often be evident while standing on the ground. Missing shingles, metal pieces displaced from around the chimney, damaged exhaust pipes, roof valleys, outer edges or angles where the roof meets the walls, can sometimes be seen from the ground. Other damage can be assessed from inside. The attic can be inspected for leaks or water damage. Water stains might be seen on the ceiling or walls. These all point to the need for repairs or a roof replacement. When on a ladder or on the roof itself (for safety, we DO NOT recommend that property owners try this themselves), a Certified NIRC Contractor will look for excess granules in the gutters. These granules may have been loosened by hail impacts. While people hear stories of “golf ball-sized hailstones,” the fact is that most hailstones are small – yet they still can cause significant damage to the roof. And loose granules should not be dismissed or overlooked. Granules are vitally important to the functioning of the roof: They protect the asphalt coating from ultraviolet light, add coloring and beauty, and provide fire resistance. Building Exteriors
While siding, stucco and brick are durable exterior finishes, they are susceptible to considerable storm damage. Often, property owners don’t notice the damage until it’s too late to file a claim. It is important to have a property inspected thoroughly after a severe storm event.
Siding
Vinyl Siding: It can be broken, cracked, or sections of it can be blown off in a storm. It’s important to report any damage that might have existed before a storm. Non-storm damage can include siding that is bowing out or appears pushed together, indications that it was nailed onto the wall too tightly. If part of the siding is melted, that can be an indication that a BBQ grill was too close to the wall. There might have been a grass fire or leaves being burned too close to the building. When this type of non-storm damage is acknowledged, it builds credibility and trust between the property owner, the contractor and the insurer. And when the siding is fully replaced, the property owner gets the added benefit of having pre-storm problems cleaned up too. Metal Siding: Wind and hail can dent, crease and tear apart metal siding. In addition, the wind will blow other debris like trash cans or tree limbs into the siding and cause damage. Again, in the interest of trust and credibility, we also emphasize that dents and other damage to metal siding occurs over time. Any damage that occurred before a storm hit should also be reported. EFIS or Synthetic Stucco: Storms can crack, chip and dent exterior EFIS and stucco applications. This damage is often noticeable because an area of the wall will feel soft, or be dented in. There might also be an area that has numerous small cracks radiating in a pattern similar to a spider web. This evidence of damage means that the foam backing behind the exterior EFIS or stucco coat will have to be removed and replaced. It’s more than a simple patch-up job. Wood, Cedar,T11: Exterior wood finishes can crack and paint can be stripped off by storms. In more severe events, entire wall sections might be pulled apart. In many restoration projects, the area can be cleaned, scrapped, pressure washed and painted, with only minimal repairs to the wood. More severe damage requires replacement. This includes damage to cedar shakes and lap siding, where the thin edges are particularly susceptible to damage, and the wood will need to be replaced. These are all observations and recommendations that the NIRC Certified Contractor will include in the repair notes. Windows and Screens
While each type of window can have unique damage, the following should be checked:
Each window for paint loss, cracks, holes, dents, and broken glass. In thermal windows, check for fogging between the panes. Each screen should be inspected for dents and cracks in the frame, and expanded fibers, holes and tears in the screening material. Each window should also be checked to ensure they are properly caulked and counter-flashed Lights and Fixtures
Many exterior light fixtures can become dented and the glass cracked. Overhead Doors and Entry Doors
Entry points are often overlooked during inspections. The contractor will look for paint loss, dents on the metal or wood door panels, and damage to the trim around the frame. Gutters and Downspouts
Metal gutters can be susceptible to dents, and PVC gutters can crack. If the gutter is made of aluminum, it will be thin and dents will be obvious. While the down spouts usually receive damage on the side of the home in the direction of the storm, the gutters will often receive the worst damage on the side opposite the storm. As debris rolls down the roof, they impact the inside of the gutter and dent the metal. Fascia and Soffits
The fascia will often be made of wood wrapped in metal or PVC, or the wood may be painted. The metal and PVC can sustain damage in the same way as the gutters. Painted fascia and soffits can be chipped, exposing the wood. Soffits
While typically not damaged by hail – can be severely damaged by wind. It’s common for a homeowner to attempt to repair soffits themselves, often causing more damage or only performing what could be called a stop gap repair, which will soon need to be re-done by a professional. It’s best to get it done right the first time! Decks and Railings
Wooden decks and railings will often be splintered by hail and flying debris. The most common damage is to the stain or paint. To repair it the deck must be stripped and cleaned, and the stain or paint reapplied. Miscellaneous Items
It’s wise to check around the property for additional items such as water hose reels, hot tub covers, flower box planters, privacy fences, sheds and other out buildings. It’s all part of the property, and it’s usually all covered in the insurance policy Driveways and Walkways
Some storms, particularly severe wind events that hurl large chunks of debris and trees through the air, as well as flooding or blizzard events, can cause concrete and other driveway materials to chip, crack and split. Not only does this reduce the lifespan of the driveway or walkway, it can also pose safety hazards. Trees
Fallen trees and limbs cause billions of dollars in damage each year to residential and commercial properties. Property owners are responsible for removing trees that have fallen on their property, even if it is a tree from a neighbor’s yard. An owner’s insurance policy will help to cover the cost of removal of the tree and limbs from all structures, and pay for the repairs to the structures that have been damaged. Insurance Claims Process: Know Your Deductible
Finally, knowing the details of the homeowners or commercial property coverage, including the limits and deductibles, are of tremendous help during the insurance claims process. It’s always a great idea to be prepared in advance, by examining the policy to know what the insurance covers now, before a storm might hit.
National Insurance Restoration Council Certified Contractors You Can Trust
Once a home or other property has been inspected by a Certified NIRC Contractor, you will get the information you need to move forward with confidence. With the knowledge, experience and resources of NIRC Certified Contractors, you can rest assured that the information and advice you receive about the damage to your property to stay well equipped to make wise decisions throughout the insurance claims and restoration construction process.

Ignus
@writersblockandapotoftea hello, you have opened Pandora's box. You thought I had world building for Nox and Siaboras? They're baaare bones compared to Ignus lol. Given that Ignus is one of the two most important kingdoms in the Lumina Chronicles, it makes sense that I've got a lot of junk on them. I'll try my best to keep this as organized as possible, so let's dive right in:
LOCATIONS:
Tumblr media
Capital:
Apakitarák, the luminization of which is roughly "glass tower" or "pillar of glass." The name stems from the impressive stained glass structure located at the center of the city. It was the most populated city in Ignus before the seige, with a marketplace larger than some entire villages. Location of the Danthragnir palace.
Other Notable Cities:
Dulkhar, translated "tempest," was the wealthiest city in Ignus, as it was the only reliable source for certain fruits (bananas, cocoa, pinapple, coffee beans) in the entire Realm. With the destruction of Ignus, those items have skyrocketed in price and rarity, and are almost impossible to find on the market (usually a cheaper Siaboran variety is sold instead, if available.)
Baidima, the luminous translation of which would be a combination of the words "distant/far away" and "home." Because Ignus was a very private nation, outsiders were never brought to Apakitarák. Baidima, located close to Luminous, Aeternal, and Siaboran territory, was a perfect "substitute capital." It was Ignus's main trade port and a popular location for many international summits.
Kalae, translated to "fortress," was a small city located at the heart of the Ignean mountain range. The most holy and elabrate temple to Naresharakh was located there, and all khisati (holy dancers in training) were required to spend three cycles there before they could officially be given the title of Narakhisa (holy dancers, the Ignean equivalent of a priest or priestess.)
ROYAL FAMILY:
The Danthragnir Bloodline
Ignus is ruled by an absolute monarchy, with the crown (usually) being passed to the first-born in each generation of Danthragnir. Though some exceptions have historically been made to the birthright order, the ruler has always been and must always be of Danthragnir blood.
The luminization of Danthragnir is "brightened eyes." This can be taken literally, as the eyes of a Danthragnir burned brighter than average firestone, or it can be taken metaphorically, as the members of the Danthragnir bloodline were capable of seeing the spirits of the dead and occasionally the auras of the living.
Alcinder Danthragnir was the last Ignean king, ruling with his wife Emelai at the time of Lumina's seige. They were confirmed among the first dead. Their children, Prince Ivinius and Princess Khatalanya, though their bodies were not identified among the rubble, have not been seen since the seige and are believed dead.
Queen Amaranth Lousvar of Lumina was born Princess Amaranta Danthragnir, Alcinder's cousin. Her marriage to Jareth Lousvar was arranged to repair tensions between the two nations after a political scandal, and secure an alliance. This alliance lasted roughly twenty years, before it was broken with Lumina's betrayal and the genocide of Ignus.
RELIGION:
God(s): "Hey Ignus, are you monotheistic or polytheistic?" "Yes."
Ignus technically one god, Naresharakh, but he has five faces, each with their own unique personalities, dominions, and prayers. Separate but the same, indivisible but different. The five faces of Naresharakh are as follows:
Nivekhi, “One who weeps,” from Ignean nivaro ‘to weep’ and -ekhi, a suffix denoting caste or divine duty which is uncommon in colloquial Modern Ignean. Sometimes referred to as The Lamenter. Nivekhi is associated with water, death, the cold season, rain, darkness, and merfolk. "Dancing the Lamenter" is a colloquialism for dying.
Skhorekhi, “One who plants/grows” from Ignean skhoralo ‘to plant crops’ and -ekhi. Commonly known as The Seeder. Skhorekhi is associated with the earth, marriage, fertility, the growing season, new life, and humans. "Dancing the Seeder" is a colloquialism for sex or falling in love, tone of voice is veeery important for the distinction.
Imaporekhi, “One who wanders’ from Ignean imaporalo ‘to wander/fly’ and -ekhi. Commonly called The Wanderer. Imaporekhi is associated with air, movement and nomadic life, the temperate season, flight, freedom, and angels.
Thragnekhi, “One who brightens” from Ignean thragnaro “to bring light to/brighten” and -ekhi. Commonly known as The Illuminator. Thragnekhi is associated with fire, justice, education, the hot season, battle, and dragons.
Dorulekhi, “One who answers” from Ignean dorulalo, “to answer/solve” and -ekhi. Commonly known as the Resolver. Dorulekhi is the name for one face of the five-aspected divine dragon Naresharakh. Dorulekhi is associated with lightning, vengeance, passion, the stormy season, choice, and fairies.
Other Facets of Belief:
Dance- in Ignean culture, dance is the highest form of expression. As such, all prayers are made through dance. Every change of season is marked by a day long festival that begins with dances to the previous face in the morning, a combination in the afternoon, and dances to the new face in the evening. Every Ingean dances, most dance well (given that it's something they do almost daily from childhood) but everyone is encouraged to join regardless of their skill.
Reincarnation- Like Noxians, Igneans believe in reincarnation, but a much different kind. Just as Naresharakh changes his face but keeps the same soul, so too do Igneans. With each death and rebirth, they come back as a different SR species (in order, corresponding to the different faces of Naresharakh.) Ghosts are people who were somehow broken from the cycle, and must find their way back to Naresharakh's grace in order to rejoin the Great Dance (reincarnation cycle.)
Morality- Dragons live mainly by the rule of "an eye for an eye." While it is preferred that you do not harm others, if someone wrongs you it is completely within your right to seek equal reparations. Larger disputes are brought directly to the Danthragnirs for justice.
CULTURE:
Society: Since Igneans believe they have at one point been every species in the Shadow Realm, they don't have a superiority complex like most of the other species. They lead simple but celebratory lives, and are extremely family focused. It is not uncommon to see grandparents, parents, uncles, and aunts all living together with their younger generations.
Architecture: Most structures are made of stone, glass, or clay. You will see very little metal in Ignus, and even less wood. Water is used only for decorative (like a fountain) or agricultural purposes. Roads are wide with lots of room for foot traffic and dancing, and there's an abundance of shops and marketplaces. You will see colorful stained glass windows in nearly every building, and intricate sun catchers lining every street. Fireproof plants are common in hanging planters or on the roofs of buildings. Green is a popular decorative color, because it stands out against the desert sands.
Fashion: Igneans commonly dressed in loose, flowing clothing of breathable materials in bright colors and intricate patterns. For wealthier Igneans, it would not be uncommon to see gold thread woven in. The fabric was always made from fibers that had been soaked in a special fireproof substance cultivated and found only in Ignus.
Igneans wore robes, skirts, dresses, or loose pants. It was not considered undignified (and in fact it was quite common) for someone to go shirtless in public (regardless of gender). Shoes were considered pointless, as the hot desert sand could not burn a dragon, and in fact helped them keep their internal temperature high.
They did not wear jewelry, and never carried metal or wood on their person. Accessorizing was done with shawls, scarves, and tattoos. Temporary tattoos made of gold henna as well as permanent tattoos in both black and white ink were common and popular. Being a tattoo artist in Ignus was a highly respected position.
All clothing was loose, breathable, and easily removable for the sake of transformations.
Recreation:
Dance- Beyond prayers, there are dances for nearly every occasion and even as an expression of several feelings.
Music- You can't have dance without a rhythm. In public places it would not be uncommon to find a troupe of musicians performing at every corner. Ignean music was very percussion heavy, featuring lots of intricate rhythms and multiple types of drum and bell. Other popular instruments were of the plucked string variety.
Sports- Igneans are fond of both foot races in their human form and flying races in their dragon form, other popular sports include wrestling, rock climbing, and weapon work. Igneans do not and most cannot swim. Water is the Worst Thing for a dragon, and prolonged exposure can lead to temporary loss of fire, illness, and in extreme cases death.
Health- Since water is mostly a no-go for Igneans, they prefer to stay hydrated with fruit juices, coffee, and alcohol. This is viable for a dragon because they need a lot less water in their system than a human (and waaaaay less than a Siaboran, of course.) Ignean's "bathe" in rooms that are essentially clay-walled closets by stripping and setting their entire bodies on fire until they're clean. Dragons are fireproof, dirt/oils/bacteria are not.
LANGUAGE (special thanks to my friend Joe for working on this stuff with me because I am very much not a linguist)
Nêres- sun
Arukh- cold, alternately used to mean foreign
Sandaro- to abandon
Nen- I
Nodho- we (inclusive)
Yot- you (singular)
Mataro- to wait
Panu- head
Î/m- That/Those
Ava- Water
Khakota- Phoenix
Ladhiralo- To lure in or bait
Tavaro- To love
Swear Words:
Dumesh- literally translated ‘ashes’, but the concept refers to something useless or spent. When applied to a person or thing, it is roughly equivalent to calling it/them a piece of shit. Most polite conversation referring to the same object uses the less charged imva.
Kadvykya- a general purpose swearword which has no direct translation in Luminous, but can be approximated by ‘empty sea’ or ’hungry waters’, both deeply fearful concepts to dragons.
____________
Note: Sorry I bounced between tenses so often. Since Ignus is empty ruins for the majority of the Lumina Chronicles, I'm used to referring to them in past tense but I usually write these worldbuilding things in present, so there was a lot of mixup in my mind XP

Dubai Residence Landscape
02 Mudon Dubai Landscape Architectural Project
This Dubai property project contains a:
Man-Cave
This is the center of the project and is pivotal to the arrangement and architecture of the whole project. The Man cave/Spa was created for the work-at-home parent as a result of the Covid Pandemic. The Man Cave / Spa was created to allow the homeowners to work from home and at the same time enjoy the amenities that came along with the rest of the design whilst also the ability to keep an eye on the movement of the kids. The client believes that the landscape of a home is as important as living in the home hence why the clients chose to invest heavily in the beautiful aesthetic component of their garden.
Pool
It’s an overflow feature pool with hydrotherapy jets, water curtain, and nozzles, Year-round temp control with an additional heater for the hydro pool. It works on a salt chlorine generator system which produces the best form of chlorine, fully Integrated control panel with timers for filtration, lights and remote control for hydro jets. It’s a preformed type tiled pool, and has a filtration system for clear sparkling water. It consists of a waterfall feature and two perimeter water fountains.
BBQ Area
A one-piece Marble slab structure (3m in length and 1-meter depth) with storage underneath. It has a stainless steel BBQ pit as well as a lighting system/sink and stainless steel smoke extract feature. It sits adjacent to the raised terrace overlooking the pool which makes for an enjoyable experience at all times of the day
What was the project brief?
The initial design and structure of this project are inspired from the clients/family lifestyle as well as the current economic situation, Nabil says. A lot of projects during this period have been modified to cater towards the effects of the pandemic situation.
The unique lifestyle of this family allowed for a larger scope of creativity. A family consisting of three young children, husband and wife, and a close net family of brothers, sisters, and Parents/Grandparents, the client’s work-life had changed. The pandemic resulted in them spending more time at home, halted all business travels, and the need to create a harmonious environment whereby everyone’s needs could be met. The set out would function as a workplace/ to cater for family members to get together as well as a place to relax and act as holiday destination at the same time.
The clients brief was very concise, to create zones for Greeting Guests, Work, Play Area for the Kids, Swim/Spa, an Outdoor Dining, and BBQ area overlooking the Pool. The Project was to be fully automated (sound/light/Wi-Fi) and controlled from the palm of their hands.
Main design inspiration:
The initial exercise comprised of space planning whereby we could optimize efficiency for each space. We then looked at the efficiency of how the spaces were going to be used and the interconnectivity of those spaces to each other. Safety was a very important aspect for the client as they have three young children under the age of ten. Glass barriers with barrier doors were placed to prevent access to pool areas unsupervised. The final stage was to create a precedent study and a design concept that met the client’s brief.
Main architectural feature:
The landscape Architecture was mindfully created to allow for a dreamy experience whereby one would feel to be in a different world to that of the villa structure. The contrast somehow works to serve the property as a unique whole. The arabesque modern touch to the villa with the contemporary minimal touch of the garden brings two worlds together in harmony during the daytime as well as the nighttime. There are several practical and useful features throughout.
The extended terrace to the back allows the family to seat all together to appreciate the swimming pool and not worry about space constraints.
The extended terrace is connected to the BBQ which allows for easy access.
The existing wooden pergola legs were taken out and the pergola was strung back by high tension s/s wire rods to free up space for movement.
The walking path in front of the Man Cave allows the children to play with their bikes in a circular/triangular motion.
Glass barrier gates protect all from injury whether it be for children accessing the pool unattended by adults or people falling due to level differences.
The uniqueness of the design has to be the Man Cave / Spa with the bi-folding doors and rear landscape pictured garden. This structure holds the outdoor Shower / Toilet / Changing Areas as well as the indoor pantry / Bar / Entertainment and office area for the clients. It is positioned to be easily accessed by all. It is the main hub. The exterior wooden cladding that follows through to the ceiling of the interiors acts as a homage to the abundance of floral nature to the perimeter of the property as well as the community as a whole. It is one with nature beautifully exhibited.
Main design challenge:
The family was living on the premises during the interior and exterior workmanship of the project. Workers were constantly moving around at all times inside and outside so the management had to be done very carefully with a lot of care taken.
Working with sub-contractors and coordinating all the disciplines. Pool excavation and civil works happening at the same time was very difficult as there was only one double door entry and exit, so waste material and excess soil needed to be taken from the site numerous times.
Breaking the existing boundary planter box wall as it was taking up too much space. Erecting a more efficient space-saving planter box wall, waterproofing it, and adding all the necessary details while keeping all foliage alive.
Catering to additions and variations throughout the project and coordinating all disciplines. Relocating the Phone data chamber with optical fibers located where the entrance water feature was proposed, a very delicate operation.
Major sustainable aspects:
All Materials were sourced locally, water systems for planting and pool are programmed to saving water. All waste was disposed as per UAE municipality.

The Kitchen
I’ve got my living room largely torn apart while I slowly steam off ancient wallpaper in preparation for painting. Truthfully it’s more like picking little flecks of wet, pasty, sticky paper off a very large room, but, it is what it is and I’ll keep at it. And while I’ve wanted a big ol’ project house for years, I’m tired.
And maybe feel slightly complain-y. So let’s focus that complaininess into the kitchen.
Tumblr media
On the surface it’s not so bad. It’s not a small room. It has large windows. There’s a reasonable amount of storage space in cabinets that are in fairly good shape. The appliances, now, are great. And, as my favorite interior designer on instagram (https://www.homeecop.com/) told me, it has personality! Well, it’s dripping with personality. Let’s pick that personality apart, shall we?
Tumblr media
THIS. SINK. This sink is one of the things I hate most about this kitchen. See that lovely patina at the bottom? That’s funk. The glaze on the porcelain all rubbed off approximately 30 years ago, and is now a delightful matte finish that has made me almost completely give up on keeping it clean. Also, that great stainless band around the sink (and that also circles all of the edges of the countertops?)? It catches ALL THE FUNK. ALL OF IT. See how disgusting it is? That white stuff? That’s Kilz Adhesion Bonding Primer that I obviously didn’t care stained the sink. The garbage disposal is tiny and backs up and smells. like. eggs. All the time. Boiled eggs that have turned. Also, it’s tiny. Also, we replaced the faucet when we first moved in because the sprayer didn’t work. And guess what? The new sprayer doesn’t work because I spent $20 on the faucet that is a temporary solution but the diverter valve broke the day we installed it. So. Here we are. Dishes get “cleaned” by hand because there is no dishwasher. And probably the largest chunk of counter space is directly to the right of the sink, so naturally all the dirty dishes get stacked there. So before starting to cook a meal I have to unload the “clean” dishes and “wash” another load. So I’m basically spending most of my time washing dishes.
Tumblr media
This is no-man’s land. This part of the house makes me gag. I scrubbed the bathroom floor after my daughter got sick all over it and felt like I was frolicking in a field of daisies compared with just considering what is hiding in this wretched cavern of more funk. When we bought the home, all 3,000 sq ft of it was covered in carpeting, including the kitchen and baths and closets. I removed all of the carpet prior to moving in, except this stuff that covers the toe kicks under the cabinets absolutely will not be removed. The other day I hit it with the vacuum and some unknown items came loose. Commence gagging. Periodically one of those little rust colored fibers comes loose and I’ll find it on the other side of the house, and the stick vac absolutely will not deign to pick it up. Gagging continues. Just thinking of it right now is making my stomach sour. I’m used to a very clean home, and the prior owners also maintained the home very well, but this is another realm of disgusting that I just can’t even handle.
Tumblr media
This leads us to the floor. This. Floor. This probably-asbestos-crumbling-dried-out-congoleum in this fun 50′s print is another source of my gaggery. I unearthed this lovely flooring when I pulled up the moldy, disintegrating carpeting and matching turning-to-carcinogenic-used-to-be-carpet-padding-dust. On first glance I thought, okay, I can live with this short-term. In its day it could’ve been kind of fun. But because it spent the last 50+ years under moldy carpeting, it doesn’t matter how often I clean it, it still looks and feels filthy. I used to willingly participate in eating-off-the-floor in our old house, with the ugly-albeit-clean tile kitchen floor, but it’s absolutely not okay to do that here. I mean, would you? Look at that! What is that even?
Tumblr media
Cool! A built-in chopping block! I can’t even imagine how I could even dream of getting that clean so I avoid it at all costs. So that “chops” off over a foot of our already nonexistent counter space.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This kitchen is complete with absolutely no lighting. During the day it’s not so bad because of the large windows, but at night...nope. This corner, where I typically stage any baking projects, is dark as night (even during the day). And this light above the sink just doesn’t work, for some reason we haven’t unearthed. So. Dinner prep in the winter is mostly guesswork. Also that window is being held together by packing tape so that’s fun.
Tumblr media
One time there was an exhaust system in here. You can see where it vented on the back of the house. Now it’s just a decorative piece of cardboard held in place with roofing nails. Jealous yet? We haven’t even discussed the fact that the (lowered) ceiling is wallpapered. It really ties the room together.
Tumblr media
Why. Why is this wall a thing? This isn’t a small room. But, admittedly, it’s awkward. It’s more like a hallway. There are 6 doorways and four windows. So while I don’t understand why they required the large living room windows in the back of the house rather than having a normal layout, this was what they chose to do. This is just a plywood wall on which sits the stove, creating a hallway to the summer porch. But it makes the rest of the room super dark, and I love when I need my Instant Pot but I’m over by the sink and I have to trek all the way over here for it. Or liquor. Cuz that’s the liquor cabinet.
Tumblr media
This looks like a great cabinet. All these shelves pull out, and it’s actually a lot of storage. It could’ve been used for all kinds of things, maybe canned goods? But there’s a pantry for that, so this is where I keep my linens. The best part, though, about this cabinet specifically, is the smell. It has maintained, though I’ve scrubbed it, some unidentified odor that’s just got to stem from old varnish + humidity + whatever is under that bottom sliding shelf. So my linens go in smelling fresh (proud Persil user here), and come out smelling like...old.
Tumblr media
These cabinets were made to last, and last they have. When we decided to wait on the kitchen renovation, we decided to at least get new appliances. So because the new refrigerator was way bigger than the old avocado green monster, the cabinet above the fridge had to go. I figured it’d be a 45 minute project with a pry bar and a hammer. It took all afternoon. And these giant nails are why. They’re all constructed with those bad boys, and don’t want to go anywhere. I have decided, though, that I want to be heavily involved in the demo of this bad boy because catharsis.
There are SOME things that I actually like about this old kitchen. It’s completely nonfunctional in every way, but you can’t live full time in a room without growing SOME fondness for it...I guess.
Tumblr media
These shelves behind the false wall. They hang on the part of the wall that bumps in behind the dining room built-in, and alongside the door to the summer porch, so there’s not much we can do here. So these, in current (but painted) form or new altogether will remain. The upper/lower cabinet combination to the right of it is the liquor cabinet (that stoplight is a bar open/last call/bar closed indicator light, antique of course) that won’t change much, either, during the remodel (the microwave will go in the pantry once we get an outlet installed).
Tumblr media
This little hook on the bottom of one of the shelves is an eye hook to prop the summer porch door open. I like to imagine it was flapping in the wind and Gib finally got sick of listening to it one day. I’d like these shelves to stay.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I have enjoyed this large, obviously-made-for-a-living-room-in-a-ranch-house window with the table below it. There’s a large window box spanning the length of the window and we’ve carried on the tradition of feeding the squirrels and enjoy watching them grow fatter over breakfast. This window will go, however (it’s very drafty -- I’m all for leaving original windows but this one, obviously, is not) and will be raised and become 3 double-hung over the sink (but I’ll have my carpenter raise the planter box as well, the tradition must continue).
We hope to begin the kitchen renovation in May. This will be a large project. It’ll include plenty of white, subway tile, warm wood tones, etched glass, and a magical countertop material. This project will also include moving the laundry from the basement directly below the kitchen to a large, unused closet directly above, as well as gutting the only full bath in the home (currently) to include a shower we so desperately miss.
Until then I’ll be over here picking off wet pieces of wallpaper.

Excerpts from House Huntress
Here’s a place where we could live together: an apartment in the city, up some concrete steps with a discolored wrought iron railing that’s more likely to impale someone than do any kind of saving and the palms of my hands have the scars to prove it. Yours do not. The building is brick-red, or rain-stained-concrete gray, and the door, though the ivory paint is peeling in places, has a brass knocker and an eye hole for testing whether it’s worth ever opening again once we’re inside. There are some tiny planter boxes you made with your brother – the oldest one who can do things like that, whose name I never remember – and maybe I said I’d grow vegetables but I forget all about that when I see flowers, so instead of half-dead tomatoes we’ve got half-dead snapdragons and African daisies that I am clumsily trying to save after weeks of mistreatment.
There’s a kitchen just big enough to turn around in, everything that came in it already off-white or fake wood overlay, and the countertops are scattered with unorganized half-used glass jars of rosemary, thyme, basil, paprika, and old husks of garlic cloves that were rubbed clean and then forgotten. The cupboards rattle with too many coffee mugs, thrift-store finds that will never match one another and they rattle and clink against each other when you’re trying to select a particular one. The cutlery matches in that it doesn’t, so many knives and forks taken home from assorted twenty-four-hour diners to make up for the ones I keep losing and the ones you accidentally throw away with the leftovers. The fridge has at least two different kinds of non-dairy milk in it at all times, and no meat. It buzzes and groans.
Over the half-wall of the kitchen counter we have cobbled together the furniture we retained from past lives. What was once second-hand is now third-fourth-fifth-hand; at least the stuff that I bring is. You bring the overstuffed powder blue couch I love and this is its first time being co-owned by anyone, or even this far away from the nearest dirt road. Nashville is a cool city the way Austin is a cool city: an oasis of metropolitan tolerance in a desert of fucking bigots. In time the couch will be stained with candle wax and wine and what’s left behind any time you push my skirt up to discover I’ve forgotten to do laundry and so I’ve run out of underwear again. There’s books of poetry by Dickinson and Lowell on a coffee table scratched from cups, bottles, keys, lighters. There’s two poorly done paintings on the wall above the couch, portraits of two girls: one yellow-haired and the other a brunette, dressed in some early twentieth-century pink or blue gowns complete with parasol and over-the-shoulder coquettishness. A palette of faded blues and yellows and greens, the girls have the hollow black eyes of distant dreams. We found them on vacation together and had to save them.
The bedroom is small and the bed is smaller, dressed in lilac and crisp white. There’s a certain throw pillow in the center of other throw pillows that holds a secret, a zipper in the folds of its hemming to keep it. The nightstand beside my side of the bed I found next to the dumpster at my old place and it’s filled with bracelets, multicolored rings, knotted nests of necklaces, and weed in unlabeled bottles. The nightstand on your side of the bed has been in your family for three generations and I don’t know what’s in it. The bathroom smells like your perfume, like a pre-scented sample on a perfume ad insert that comes in any women’s fashion magazine. When I turn the shower on, old love-messages written on the mirror with your finger re-appear like magic.
Here is a place we could stay together: an antebellum house in the countryside, maybe close to your family. Close enough that you can walk a dirt path through the dry grass that’s tall as your hips. It’s a path lined with day-glo orange and gold poppies, and purple nettle flowers that sting to touch. You visit your father, your brothers, whenever you want. The middle brother who you’re so worried over all the time despite his being older than you, Angus, he comes over regularly to sit in our cool parlor decorated with see-through white linen curtains where he drinks bourbon and talks about Edna St. Vincent Millay and W. H. Auden and grumblingly refuses to show you or anyone else any of his own recent poetry.
The house is smaller than the one you were raised in, and bigger than any house I’ve ever called home or even been inside for very long. It’s an adjustment for both of us. Outside there are columns that sit beneath the second-story balcony. When we bought the place it was all whitewashed, but since then most of it has been painted a muted pink and I’ve planted ivy and bougainvillea that creeps up the columns in deep greens and explodes across the sides of the house in shades of magenta that refuse to die, despite me not knowing what I’m doing. Errant cats wander the property with dusty brown paws that leave prints across the white planks of the front porch and on the seat of a swing. Light streams in through windows half as tall as I am and onto end tables and decorative shelving to reveal intricate doilies and gold-rimmed porcelain candy bowls, ancient copies of books thick enough to kill a man with if used properly, and glass vases filled with bouquets of wild flowers we both pick for each other on any given weekend.
The ceilings are so high that I can hear you singing to yourself in the kitchen from the other side of the house; your smoky lounge-singer voice that you typically only show off for family Christmas carols now bounces off of support beams to reach me wherever I am. Our guitar in the corner stays tuned and clean and in the evenings I play and you sing, or the other way around, or we take turns. In the kitchen, brass pots and pans hang from above, over a restored-vintage stove, along with hanging bundles of drying herbs: rosemary, sage, basil, lavender. Storage containers of descending size with painted-on sunflowers contain flour, sugar, and rice separated by variety. The freezer is stuffed with mason jars equally stuffed with jam: blackberry, marionberry, raspberry, orange marmalade, strawberry, blueberry, fig. There is one hook for multiple aprons, there is a multitude of decorative dish towels which are separate and different from the actual dish towels and this is true even when used interchangeably like I do on accident (to your chagrin). Coffee grounds and cat hair and the plastic ties from long-gone loaves of sliced bread fall between the gaps in the counter and the stove.
The stairs will never stop creaking. The second floor has endless guest rooms for friends and family to stay in, the kind of family who will never be introduced to your own, the kind that will wake up early and make breakfast for us to say thanks, and then they say it again with their lips and their eyes and their embrace on the way out the door. Our bed is big, queen-sized, with a white iron frame that twists and turns like it grew that way from nature, and the sheets have tiny blue flowers on them the color of your eyes. We cover rings in the wood on the nightstand with squares of pale green linen. Batteries roll around back and forth against silicone inside the drawers, and we’re careful not to be too loud for the neighbors’ sakes, but that is half the fun. On weekends and days when I can’t get out of bed, you close the curtains to the sun, crawl under the covers with me, and we spend all day trying to come up with a good reason to get up.
Here is a place where we could grow old together: somewhere forgotten by the sea, away from the dry heat of summer. A house that is wider than it is tall, with new paint and an old garden that we make new again. Everything I plant turns to green. There is sand stuck into the fibers of the welcome mat, and smooth stones that we have collected and arranged into spirals and borders for garden beds keep everything from touching that we do not want touching. The door has more glass than wood on the front, multi-colored and mosaic so when the sun shines through it makes patterns on the floor for our feet to dance in. There is a backyard with a fence so high no one can see into it, except for the sunflowers which stretch up and up and up and over.
Inside there are bare wooden floors that we cover here and there with rugs collected from our worldly travels, purchased from artisans with a smile and many thanks. The furniture we use is purchased in a similar fashion; it is made of sturdy pine and oak, built to last, and stain resistant, with covers and cushions the colors of the ocean outside. The bookshelves hold volumes of poetic verse written by Keats, the fragmented desires of Sappho, biographies on Frida Kahlo, and lamentations of Sylvia Plath. At night the sounds of the waves can be let in or shut out through the many windows, and when it rains the whole house sounds off with the plunking of drops on glass like the pickings of my guitar.
The bay window in the kitchen over the sink holds flowers waiting to be pressed or dried or just picked in haste and then forgotten: violets, little daisies, hydrangea, and lots and lots of lavender. The counter tops are wooden, like you could cut right on them, and there are knife marks to prove it here and there in collections. There’s a china-blue bowl of oranges with only two left. Bulbs of garlic hang in a basket by the sink. An errant smell of sage and sea salt sinks into all our food, and the flecks of soil on the tile near the backdoor can never fully be swept out for good. To drink we make lemonade of all kinds: blackberry, strawberry, raspberry, mint, or water infused with cucumber and lemon, or hot tea with names like Rasperry Zinger and Orange Spice, and Sleepytime for late nights. A glass jar of honey sits on the counter next to the stove and it is always oozing. There is a table for two tucked into the corner, with bare wooden chairs we picked up from antique sales. They don’t match, but it’s hard to tell.
In the bathroom the shower has walls of tall frosted glass and connects to a bath tub deep and wide, soap scum fitting into the corners of the walls and in the grout of the tile. The rim of the tub is littered with half-empty bottles: baby pink, sea-foam green, and pearly white. It is so good for washing the salt from your hair.
There is no guest bedroom. Our bed is four-poster, with lavish fabrics draped around the beams, all indigo and white and cornflower blue. There are so many pillows of similar colors that it takes a concentrated effort to remove them before bed each night and replace them again in the gray mornings that follow. And sometimes we don’t replace them, and sometimes we do. The drawers of the nightstand beside it are stocked and arranged in an arsenal of silicone sexuality that we never worry someone might stumble upon. We are as loud as we like.
In the winter when the wind howls, there’s a blackened fireplace that we bring back to life. It crackles and spits while we turn against one another under the covers. A hamper in one corner is overflowing at all times. There’s a dresser that is taller than it is wide, almost to the ceiling, filled with scarves and summer dresses and sweaters; and, in between the socks and stockings in one of the smaller drawers, a collection of love poetry I’d forgotten I’d written to you. Your vanity holds pearls and perfumes, necklaces on silver hooks like branches worked to resemble a dead tree, and the mirror is pristine and round the way all mirrors ought to be. Sometimes in the evenings before bed, you let me brush your hair in front of it even though you think it’s silly. You sit on that little white wooden bench in front, with me standing behind you so you watch me in the mirror working the brush through your beach-blown curls. You don’t ever have to tell me when I’m hurting you because I already know.

Indoor Gardening: Great Gardening Ideas to Smarten our Home
Tumblr media
There are many home gardening ideas that are flocking on the net and many of which are being introduced in the market for the benefit of home and gardening enthusiasts. The latest trends for gardening are raised bed garden, conventional bed garden and flower box.
These are the only few examples for home improvement ideas. If we try to check online, most home improvement topics are based on gardening. We all know that there are different gardening methods and that’s what this article is all about.
youtube
Indoor gardening is one of the methods of home gardening. Good thing about it is that plants do not require full sunlight exposure. Few moments of sunlight would complete the condition of the plants. Indoor gardening involves planters, flower boxes and hanging baskets as examples. These three are different but they do have the same purpose. And that is to accentuate our home.
Planters for instance have different types. Fiber glass, illuminated and PVC planters are some few types of planters. We can match the type of planters that our home concept requires and have it added as part of the interior decoration in our house. We can also check out some designs that may vary and will complement the style of our house whether it is minimalist or abundant living.
Another example of indoor gardening is flower box. Flower box is a container that substitutes the conventional bed gardens. It is small for a garden but the difference it makes to our home is outstanding. For instance, we do not need to go out of the house to take care of the garden.
Tumblr media
Instead, we can have a small container box that we can place inside the house and fill it in with our favorite flowering plants. It can be accessible even if the climate is poor. Winter and rainy seasons are the time when gardening is not accessible. At least for flower box, gardening can be made easy and possible anytime.
Hanging basket is the least used indoor gardening example. It is not as commonly used as the other two examples stated above, but it does the same thing with our home. It gives life and color to our living sanctuary. It does not only beautify but it brings out the best in our house.
Hanging baskets can be of simple but the simplicity accentuates the flower that it goes with. The trick to make the basket effective is the selection of the flowering plant that we are going to fill in the container basket. Bountiful blossoms of flowers would mean excellent hanging basket decoration.
Tumblr media
There are many gardening methods and ideas that are being posted via the internet but I would still go for availability anytime of the year. Who knows this can be a cure to our unpredicted boredom in the future. Do you agree?

Comment on Can Fiber Cement Siding Be Used for Raised Bed Gardens? - Today's Homeowner by Rosebudforglory
I WOULD NOT use hardi board for a raised bed due to wood cellulose component. In fact, I wouldn’t use hardy plank siding on a house or anything. for the same reason because it has failed and there are quite a few class action suits plus private suits. I personally have seen it fail on a 5 yr old house. On one of those class action suits – they lost in Nov 2017 Millions in fines etc. It is public record – can read the articles or look up the cases at your local library or online. Who wants to pay more for a supposed premium product on a new house have it fail 2-3 yrs in. If anyone believes it is a good exterior product – they work for the company, or are a distributor or a contractor with it on a bunch of houses. They should all be sued for ripping people off. But the issue begins at the head of the snake.
I would use Durarock cement board or Permabase cement board – (the 2nd by testing is supposed to be even more moisture resistant. Not by much but if you can get cheaper than big name Durarock I would try it. All I have used is Durarock. These are cement, aggregate (stone) and glass or wire mesh. Nothing to crumble. I had it on my back porch covering a generator 20 yrs – snow, ice, rain – no issues. Same for a planter box on top of the ground – as long as one side can breathe. If you go over 12” I would cut it in 6” or 12” widths so water can drainmout the sides in case of heavy days long rains. You could also drill holes along the sides or towards the bottom. You don’t need but 2-3 per side but will have to cover holes with row cover cloth or fine screen to keep dirt from washing out holes. If you live in low rain areas you won’t need to do.
Just make sure it is cement (no wood or cellulose). Hope that helps someone.
