FIBA World Cup will distribute a total of 3.4 million dollars in prize money among the 32 participating national teams, with each team receiving a base bonus of $53,568 and the Top 16 teams receiving an additional $107,135 euros each.
FIBA never had prize money for men's or women's world cups before this 2023 men's cup. The women's world cup was just one year ago and there was no prize money. But no one thought to ask for prize money because we didn't realize FIBA was hoarding cash for the men.
The women's basketball world was blindsided by this! But Sue Bird was there at this men's cup accepting her new role as a FIBA ambassador! There's a lot of hype and fanfare and media and interviews around her accepting her new role. But she hasn't said anything about this 3.4 million dollar prize money pool. If she knew about the men's prize money and didn't warn us about it, that would be discouraging. Hopefully she was somehow left out of the loop and they didn't tell her about the men's money. Once she finds out, she'll demand equal pay for the 2022 women's world cup teams, right?
There were only 12 teams at the 2022 women's world cup tournament. The top 16 men's teams received $160,703 each. So those 12 women's teams from the 2022 cup should receive $160,703 each. It would be absolutely insane if Sue Bird didn't demand equal prize money for the 2022 teams. I don't just want equal prizes in the future in 2026. That is not enough! I want to see equal prizes for the 2022 teams who just competed! If there was money on the table for men in 2023, that means there was money hidden away in 2022!
Ambassador Sue Bird's fiancée Megan Rapinoe built an entire global brand and movement around equal prize money for women. So I'll be interested to see how Sue responds to this.

Storm had two of the top five block leaders ⛈
Also, Ezi’s blk/game is mostly skewed by two games she popped off on the blocks, including one where she came off the bench.
vs France - 1
vs Mali - 1
vs Serbia - 0 (bench)
vs Canada - 5 (bench)
vs Japan - 0

2022 FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup
I feel like if you’re already here, you probably already know what FIBA World Cup is…
Something about basketball 🏀, different countries competing 🌏, a trophy 🏆 ?
But all you really need to know is that
QUEEN LJ IS BACK
Lauren Jackson AO OLY is back!! It’s been 12 years since she played in the World Cup. You can read more about her comeback here (or honestly, just stay here, there’ll be lots more LJ to come).
You also probably need to know that it’s from 22 September to 1 October, and maybe you want to know it’s being held in Sydney?
How to watch:
Australia - Kayo Sports - home of live and on-demand Women’s World Cup, all games available in Australia (unsure if this works if you’re overseas)
Overseas - Courtside 1891 - this is the official home of live and on-demand Women’s World Cup, but the games are geolocked (and all are locked in Australia). Check the list here (warning: not mobile friendly) for specific games and their blocked locations
