For every love and heartbreak the universe seems to magically conjure out of thin air, there also lies an ever matching soundtrack that traces every up and down of the experience until the very end. Though no matter if you’ve been through either, the sonics of such a moment is recognizable to any ear, and in that truth lies the grace of Katzù Oso’s soft spoken, synth infused music.
The young Montebello, California based musician has been quickly growing a passionate fan base through his arsenal of authenticity and reliability in sound, lyricism and upbringing. Ultimately bringing together listeners of diverse backgrounds and experience. Yet, all finding sanctuary under his umbrella of synth pop that adds, yet stands on its own, from the ever growing genre sweeping into the ears of the youth.
With a show opening for Tyler, the Creator under his belt and an mixtape on the way, Katzù Oso has the door to the music world available for his taking. Though, the steps to get there will be the same as always: to wear his heart on his sleeve, to inject positivity into ever listener and, above all, to grow artistically in every possible, and by any means necessary.
PM: First question, as always, how’s your day going?
My day is going well! I went for a run earlier & now I’m excited to try out this new Yamaha dx 21 I just bought.
PM: To begin, what’s the best childhood memory you can remember relating to music?
My best childhood memoryhas to be my dad teaching me how to play bass and guitar & jamming to some our favorite Beatle songs. He’s a musician and he used to record music with my uncle using an old 32 track Tascam. I would always be chillin’ during his sessions hahah.
PM: As an artist, did the way you grow up influence what you create currently? As well, what was some of the most formative music you grew up around?
Yeah I would say it did. My mom would always be playing old Spanish ballads and my dad was more on the classic rock genre so I would always get a mix of both growing up.It wasn’t ’til middle school that I decided to look for new genres and styles of music. Coming across 80’s new wave probably made the biggest impact to me when it came to synths and new sounds - I listened to The Cure, Cocteau Twins, Kraftwerk, Jesus and The Mary Chainand a lot of New Order.
PM: You also proudly display your Mexican roots as well, representing a group of youth still working to find their voice, but if you could, what would be your message to any kid going through struggles you may have yourself when growing up?
Tumblr media
I would say to be confident in yourself and love what you do. If you’re passionate about something there is someone out there that is also passionate about what you’re doing! You may not be every ones cup of tea but you will be someone’s.
PM: Moving into the current day, you make a distinctly emotional and atmospheric brand of music that works to your advantage, how would you say this unique branding has helped set you apart from others in your ever growing genre?
I’m honestly not thinking too much about how it is received. I’m just making music about real things that have happened to me and my real experience and hoping that people can relate. I’m inspired a lot by pop music which probably contributes to the sound a lot, but I think we all have our stories to tell in this genre. This one is mine.
PM: Though, while setting yourself apart is important, there’s always the opportunity for collaboration. Do you hope to soon collaborate with any artists in music? If so, who and why?
Yes I do! I’m pretty much wrapping up my upcoming mixtape so I’m looking into doing collabs and features this summer! I want to work with a lot of inspiring artists on the rise at the moment. Would love to get to work with Vansire, Cuco, Jakob Ogawa, Mellow Fellow, and my boy VICTOR!
PM: And, if you were able to create your ultimate creative space, what would it look like in your eyes?
I would want a big window with a view of the city and a big ass couch so I could have friends over! But if you guys want to see my ideal studio set up look up Romil’s (of Brockhampton)current set up.His studio is goals.
PM: As well, and important part of an artist’s image is their live performance, what do you believe are your biggest strengths on the stage that can’t be expressed through an audio file?
Well I typically expand every song live to give the audience a more intimate feel of my music. They’re versions of my songs that are not up on streaming services so I highly suggest you come out to a show!
youtube
PM: It’s a tricky question, but can you name the best 3 concerts you’ve seen or been a part of? What about them was special?
The most special concert I’ve been to wasTame Impala at the Belasco in 2013 cause I got to meet Kevin Parker. Kevin is probably the most ideal person I would ever want to make music with. He is a great songwriter so yea I was fan girling when I met him haha. And the most special concert that I was part of would be opening for Tyler, the Creator & Brockhampton in December of 2017 because I got to meet a lot of artists that I’m inspired by & that I listen to all the time.
PM: Now looking to the future, How do you hope to improve yourself creatively with time? What goals do you want to set and achieve for yourself in music?
I always strive to make something different and better than what I have out so far - if I’m not dancing or grooving in my room when the song is done I most likely won’t release it haha. But yea I played trumpet and euphonium in high school and middle school for 5 years so one day I want to incorporate a lot more live instrumentation/brass in my music. I also want to get better at writing and move out of my bedroom to start working in a real studio hahah always gotta move forward.
PM: Do you have any projects fans should keep an eye out for soon? And if so, will they differ (and which ways if so?) or continue to build on past work?
This mixtape is very special to me ‘cause it’s literally one big mashup of a big part of my life. From being in love at an all time high to getting my heart broken so every song has a different feel to them but that’s what I love about my music. I don’t have to stick to a certain sound or genre! If I enjoy making it then that’s all that really matters.
Tumblr media
PM: With summer approaching super fast, do you have any memories you’re excited to make in the next months or possibly in the next years as you continue to grow your career?
Yes! I’m doing a small west coast tour in July (tour dates below) so I’m pretty excited about that! I’ve never been on tour so I don’t know what to expect but I’m really excited to meet my fans outside of LA! After that I’m releasing my mixtape this summer and playing some festivalsand shows so catch me at one!
PM:  Finally, what’s one movie everyone reading this should watch tonight?
Fire in the Sky (1993) is a good alien flick. One of my faves!
PM: Do you have anything to shout out or promote? The floor is yours!
My mixtape is dropping this summer so definitely listen to that & come out to some shows if you’re on the west coast! Shoutout Nesquik!
