Delaying the Inevitable
Premise: This is a retelling of the diamond scene from book 1, chapter 5 when Ethan and MC are in the private box at the baseball game…from Ethan’s perspective.Â
Book: Open Heart
Pairing: Ethan Ramsey x F!MC (Cassie Valentine)
Rating/Category: General. Fluff
Words: 2.5 KÂ
A/N: I’ve also often wondered what they talked about as the game unfolded and the sun sunk lower in the sky. Characters and some of the dialogue belong to Pixelberry. Be kind, hit the like button or comment.
-----------------------
Ethan Ramsey could think of at least 10 other things he could be doing than spending the afternoon at Fenway Park with a bunch of vultures from Banner Health. He had been distracted by a certain intern who was completing paperwork on the other side of the nurses’ station when Harper had asked him to accompany her to this meeting at their private box. He’d said yes without meaning to and now he was stuck.
It wouldn’t have been so bad if Harper hadn’t been pulled away for an emergency consult at Edenbrook. He would have just let her do all the talking and nodded or added a word here and there when required. Now, it was all on him and he would rather have a root canal without anaesthetic. He knew he was stalling when he ordered one more drink before heading upstairs, but he frankly didn’t care. It was one more moment that he could use figuring out what he was going to about his intern problem, namely one intern – Cassie Valentine.
Ever since the night they’d stayed up to watch over Dolores’s baby, he hadn’t been able to get her out of his mind.  He’d thought that what he’d felt the first moment he’d seen her was a fluke, but after Dolores he couldn’t keep lying to himself. Something was happening and as the more experienced party it was up to him to stop it. He just didn’t know how. All these years of seeing interns come and go and all it took was one to shake his world. On top of what was happening with Naveen, he just couldn’t…
“Dr. Ramsey? What a small world.”
Ethan inwardly flinched as he heard the familiar voice break through his thoughts. He looked up to see Cassie walking toward him, looking entirely too appealing in a sports jersey and shorts.
“Some might say too small,” he said, finally looking up to meet her eyes.
She smiled at that. “What are you doing here?”
“I’m merely doing what all doctors do…delaying the inevitable.” He said the last few words almost in a whisper.
 “Wait…what?”
She looked confused and he didn’t blame her. What was he doing? He looked around making sure no one from Banner Health was nearby as the entrance to the private box elevator was just behind them.
“I was invited here by the executives of Banner Health.”
“The health insurance company?”
“The administration is negotiating our contract renewal with Banner,” he explained. “Chief Emery insisted I accompany her as they essentially bribe us in their private box suite.
“You and Chief Emery are up in a box? Cool!” Cassie’s cheerful reply was Ethan’s undoing and an idea started to formulate in his head.
“Well, it’s just me now. Harper was called back for an emergency, so I’m fending off the vultures on my own.” He could feel his frustration leaking. “They’re trying to butter me up with lobster, fine wine, all the ridiculous luxuries they can afford. It’s terrible.”
“Um, that sounds pretty alright to me,” she looked at him quizzically as if she wasn’t sure what the issue was.
Ethan sighed deeply. “It may surprise you to hear. I’m not one for…schmoozing.”
At that, a huge grin broke across her face and he could see the mischievous sparkle in her green eyes. “You? Noooo…”
He wondered if he was losing his mind but made the ask before he could stop himself.
“As much as it humiliates me to ask a favor of an internwould you…join me upstairs?” He pushed when he sensed she might be getting ready to refuse. “I won’t keep you long. I just don’t think I could survive with them on my own.”
He breathed a sigh of relief when she agreed to be his wingman or wingwoman, he supposed. He led her to the elevator before she…or he… could change their minds. Soon they were upstairs standing at the entrance of the luxurious box, the team from Banner Health standing near the buffet, drinks in their hand while other guests spread out across the couches and cushioned stadium seats watching the activity in the field below.
“I could get used to this.”
“God forbid,” he muttered but he wondered if he wasn’t being an ungrateful ass. To an intern who was 200K in debt, it would certainly appear that way. It wasn’t that long ago when he was in her position.
The view of the game from the box was spectacular and it wouldn’t hurt to take a few moments with Cassie after their business was done. After all, he didn’t want to her feel like he was using her without any benefit. She might never get a chance to enjoy something like this.
“Here.” He poured her a large glass of an expensive looking malbec. She looked like the type to appreciate red wine. He poured one for himself too and raised his glass in a toast. “To surviving the insipid people in our industry without having an aneurysm.”
Cassie didn’t salute his toast, taking a sip of her wine instead. “I don’t know what you’re complaining about. Great view, great wine, lobster and steak at a baseball game? This is the life!”
“That’s what they want. To seduce you. To convince you to think like them. Don’t let become about the money.”
He hoped she wouldn’t. She had such a brilliant mind and an empathy for patients he hadn’t seen in many years. He couldn’t let her be taken in by the perks and incessantly needing to please their insurance overlords while leaving patient care behind. He’d seen too many good doctors lose their way because of it.
“Of course, it’s not about the money.” he watched her take in the view. “It’s about the patients. But I can enjoy the perks, right?”
“Of course, you can. I encourage you to milk them for everything they’re worth.” He smiled as she raised her glass in his direction. “I’m just warning you. I’ve seen too many good doctors change their priorities. Doctors who would’ve sworn they’d be the last to do such a thing.”
“Ethan! Ethan, there you are!”
Ethan forced himself to smile as he turned to the Banner Health executive that had called out his name.
“You have a terrible poker face.” She grinned as she said it.
This time his smile was genuine. “What do you want from me? I’m a doctor, not an actor!”
He quickly explained to Cassie what the hospital wanted as the executives walked over. She nodded once and then he was introducing her to the group.
“She is one of our most promising young doctors. The next generation of medicine, in fact.”
He watched her charm the executives, being polite and attentive; he couldn’t have been prouder. She deftly got him out of a tee time, and he could have kissed her just for that. He glanced at her briefly and for a split second he let what he felt for her show – approval and maybe a hint of something more. She met his gaze, unblinking, before turning her attention to the executives.
Soon they were exchanging numbers and Ethan found himself surprised once again when Cassie turned into a ruthless negotiator. She talked about percentage points, pay for performance, value-based reimbursement and better rates on cardiac services. Every time someone from Banner Health talked about monetization, she pivoted the discussion to deferring the cost of patient care and made it seem like the idea came from the executives themselves.
She really was the next generation of medicine. He couldn’t remember a single intern having enough knowledge of business, let alone turning the tables on a national insurance carrier in their first few weeks on the job. He found himself once again wondering about the puzzle that was Dr. Cassie Valentine. He tuned into the conversation as the negotiations appeared to have reached the end and he found himself shaking their hands.
Before he knew it, he and Cassie were alone. “Good job squeezing them at the end.”
“Our patients would have suffered otherwise,” she answered as if it were obvious. It was to him, but it was nice to hear someone else share his perspective. “So, we’re done?”
They were, but he didn’t want to let her go just yet. “With the business, yes. Though I suppose we could stay and enjoy the game for a while.” Please say yes, he thought.
“I have some time before my friends expect me back.”
“Can I get you more wine?”
“Yes, please. Pinot noir if they have it.”
Ethan made his way to the bar, ordering a scotch for himself and red wine for her. He saw her texting as he walked back with their drinks and wondered if she was giving her friends an update. He hoped she kept him out of it. The last thing he wanted was to be part of the hospital gossip grapevine. He placed the wine glass on the table in front of her and took his seat, turning slightly toward her. She was smiling as her fingers ran over the screen.
She put the phone away and took a sip of her wine. He knew what was coming when she beamed at him. For some reason seeing each other outside the hospital was making him think they could be different people. For one hour he wanted to believe that they had met under different circumstances; in this one he wasn’t her boss, and she wasn’t almost 10 years his junior.
“One of our most promising doctors.” The mischief was back in her eyes.
“Stop.”
“The future of medicine.” She was laughing at him and he let her.
“Well, I couldn’t very well introduce you as a colossal pain in my ass, now could I?” He teased back. There was something about her that brought out the smart aleck in him. Before he knew it, he was asking the question that had been nagging him all day.
“Why have you not entered the competition for the fellowship?”
“Were you hoping I would?” How did he know she would turn this around on him? The skillful way she’d managed the Banner Health executives had been eye opening.
“It’s unbecoming to flatter yourself, Rookie.” He used the nickname thinking how he hadn’t had one for any other intern before her. Whenever he used it, he was reminded of when they first met.
“You were hoping, weren’t you?”
“Not in the slightest. It’s a mystery, and I cannot resist a mystery. Nothing more.”
“I think you care because we’re becoming friends.”
“Absolutely not.” He denied it even as he knew it was true. They were becoming friends and, at least on his side, maybe something more.
“You’re just delaying the inevitable.” She smirked as she played his words back to him.
“…As all doctors must.” He grinned. He couldn’t help himself. Something about her made him years younger.
“Will you answer another question for me?” He said after they watched the game play out on the field below them. His curiosity about her was in full force as he thought back to the discussion with the Banner Health reps. “How do you know so much about contract negotiations? It’s not a standard course in med school.”
He watched her as she thought about his question. It wasn’t a complicated one, but for some reason she seemed reluctant to answer him. She watched him over the rim of her wine glass and then appeared to come to a decision.
“No, it wasn’t part of the standard curriculum at John Hopkins, but it was at Wharton.”
He stood still at that. There was only one reason why someone would go to Wharton and it wasn’t for a lark.
“Before I was accepted to med school, I was finishing my MBA in international business at Wharton. It’s a Valentine family tradition, I’m afraid.”
“What made you change careers?” He was impressed and intrigued at the same time. Cassie Valentine was a mystery, and he would get to the bottom of her.
“You did.” Her cheeks were flush as if embarrassed, but her green eyes never wavered from his. “I read your book and it was like the world suddenly made sense. Your papers on systemic amyloidosis, Lesch-Nyhan Syndrome, spinocerebellar ataxia…You inspired me to go to med school.”
“Flattery, Rookie? I know I’ve told you before I can’t be bribed into favoring you.” He heard the sincerity in her voice, but he wasn’t ready for things to be serious between them. He wanted the light-hearted banter from earlier.
“And I believe I said, you already do,” she laughed and finished her wine. “You better hope you don’t run into my grandfather. He hasn’t forgiven me for turning my back on the family business and he blames you completely.”
“Oh?” This was the first time she had mentioned her family, not that he had given her opportunities to do so before. Their roles at the hospital meant there was a barrier between them, one that he had encouraged because of his initial reaction to her.
“In my family, we take tradition and loyalty very seriously. I’m now the black sheep and it’s all your fault.” He knew she was teasing him, and he couldn’t help but smile. He had likely smiled more today than in the last few weeks and it was the Cassie Valentine effect.
“Should I watch my six?”
“And your three, nine and twelve. Valentines don’t mess around.”
Her phone pinged before he could respond. “It’s my friends. They’re wondering where I am.”
“Yes, of course.” He knew he should let her go. They’d been up here a while and he needed to head back to the hospital.
“Thank you for the assist, Dr. Valentine.” He knew he sounded stiff, but it was time to put the barrier back up again.
She smirked at his tone but followed his lead. “You’re welcome, Dr. Ramsey. See you later.”
They walked back to the elevator and he pressed the call button. When it came, she stepped inside and turned to face him. He kept his eyes on hers as the doors slowly closed and didn’t realize he’d been holding his breath until she was no longer visible.
It was going to be a difficult year no matter how he looked at it. Â

Walk the Freedom Trail and step through history
One of the best ways to soak up the mammoth historical importance persevered around Boston is to walk the Freedom Trail.
The 2.5-mile route leads you to 16 historically significant sites. The collection of museums, churches, meeting houses, burying grounds, parks, a ship, and historic markers tell the story of the American Revolution and beyond.
You can choose to walk the freedom trail on your own following one of these maps.
You also have the option to join a 90-minute tour across certain parts of the Freedom Trail led by Freedom Trail Players, 18th-century costumed guides. Tours depart from both the Boston Common Visitor Information Center and the ArtsBoston Booth at Faneuil Hall.
As you only have one day in Boston, you can decide to take a shorter version of the Freedom Trail, and picking the stops you want to go to instead of completing all 16.
For more information about Freedom Trail Tours, visit the foundations website here.
Explore Boston Tea Party Ships & Museum
Learn all about the famous Boston Tea Party and visit the ships and museum, or better yet take part in an interactive tour and become part of the revolution.Â
The museum’s historical interpreters will whisk you through interactive exhibits, retelling the tale of life in a very rebellious Boston in 1773.
After the exhibits, enjoy a colonial tea experience at Abigail’s tea room. The Terrace has beautiful skyline views across Boston.

Visit Boston’s Best Bookshops
Boston has some incredible bookstores. In tucked away corners of the city, you’ll discover hoarders paradises full of books spanning across every genre. Two must-visit Boston bookstores are:
Brattle Book Shop
9 West St, 02111
This book shop has an amazing outdoor market, filled with a treasure trove of old books. The store also has two stories arranged by genre, covering everything from classics to psychology.
Harvard Bookstore
1256 Massachusetts Ave, Cambridge, 02138
The Harvard Bookstore is a magical place. This is where students from the nearby campus come to buy their books. It’s easy to spend hours here, browsing books and getting a feel for the Harvard lifestyle.

Shop at Faneuil Hall Marketplace
Stop by Faneuil Hall for some of the best shopping in the city. You’ll find 40 local businesses, selling there unique wares – perfect for thoughtful souvenirs.
The hall’s focus is on providing something different to your average shopping mall – an eclectic mix of stores.
History fans can also rejoice as you are able to take a walking tour, or gaze at some of the original artefacts on display.
Discover more about Faneuil Hall here.
Then eat at Quincy Market
Quincy market is the perfect place to stop for a bite to eat after a hectic morning exploring Boston. Youll find 18 restaurants and 35 colonnade eateries to choose from.
The market opened in 1826 and is still serving yummy food to visitors and locals alike.
Some of my top picks of foods to try here are:
Clam Chowder-Â from Boston Chowda Co
Boston cream pie (the official dessert of Massachusetts) – Try it at Quincy’s Place
Lobster rolls – Eat at Boston & Maine Fish Co
Find out more about all the tasty food at Quincy Market here.
Take a trip to Harvard
Ever wanted to see just what happens at a world-renowned educational institution? Visiting the Harvard campus is a must. Located in Cambridge, the campus is only a short subway ride away from Boston. The Harvard Square stop on the Red Line of the MBTA subway system is across the street from the Harvard Yard and takes roughly 12 minutes from Boston centre.
Walk the same corridors as some of the minds that have helped shape the world that we live in. The best way to see the campus is to take a student-led walking tour. The tour is around one-hour long and is completely free. For more information about tour times visit the Harvard website here.
Take a tour of Fenway – or catch a game
Even for those who aren’t die-hard baseball fans, seeing a game is probably one of the most American pastimes you can experience. The main season starts in April and runs through to the end of September, but you can also visit Fenway during the spring training season. Home games run regularly throughout the main season. To find out when the Sox are playing, you can view the schedule on their website.
You can also by tickets for games on the Red Sox website here
Alternatively, you can take a tour of the stadium at a really reasonable price. A one-hour small group tour of Fenway is $21, which you can book here. The tour takes you behind the scenes, with unrivalled access down Fenway’s hallowed halls.
So grab a hotdog, take a seat and get yourself down to the ballgame.
Dinner in Chinatown
Boston’s Chinatown area has some great, authentic Chinese restaurants. These Asian eateries have everything form dumplings to dim-sum. Just visit this neighbourhood and pursue what’s on offer until something catches your eye.

Boston’s 2018 Eater Award Winners
The best chefs, restaurants, and bars of the year
Today, we are thrilled to announce the winners of the ninth annual Eater Awards, celebrating the chefs and restaurants that made the largest impact on all 24 Eater cities over the past 12 months.
As noted throughout the voting period last week, each city is giving out awards in five categories, and each category features an editors’ choice winner, as chosen by each city’s editorial staff, and a readers’ choice winner, as voted on in last week’s polls.
Editors’ choice winners will be receiving a traditional Eater tomato can trophy and a feature story in the coming year, and readers’ choice winners get plenty of bragging rights. Nominees were picked by Eater editorial staff from among all restaurants that opened since shortly before last year’s awards — late 2018 openings will be considered for next year’s awards — and in line with Eater Boston’s standard geographic radius for coverage, this year’s nominees come from Boston proper and a little bit beyond.
Here now are the establishments — from a lively Peruvian destination to a restaurant that melds Mediterranean cuisine with New England ingredients, from a casual Thai hot spot to an intimate wine bar — that have taken the Boston food world by storm this year.
Restaurant of the Year
Celeste 21 Bow St., Union Square, Somerville
Rachel Leah Blumenthal/Eater
Lomo saltado at Celeste
First: Head to the Celeste website and hit “play” on the Celeste radio. Now we can begin.
Created by a passionate team with roots in the arts — a filmmaker, an architect, a writer, an artist — Union Square’s new Peruvian spot Celeste is more of an experience than a restaurant. Sure, you’ll eat and drink, and it’s all wonderful, from the gorgeous ceviches to the fragrant lomo saltado, not to mention the pisco- and mezcal-based cocktails or the carefully chosen beer and wine selections. (Try Oyster River’s pét-nat, Morphos, a bubbly mainstay on the wine list that complements everything, including Celeste’s celebratory vibe.)
But it’s not just about the food. A lot of restaurants these days spout buzzwords about “community” when opening — restaurants can’t just be restaurants anymore; they also have to be gathering spaces, art projects, a home away from home. Many restaurants try, but Celeste achieves this, and in a tiny, improbable space, no less.
It’s a natural extension of the pop-up restaurant that co-founders JuanMa Calderon and Maria Rondeau ran out of their home. The moment you walk in, you’re a friend of the team. You’re in their bright, pristinely decorated living room, and it’s also an art gallery, a listening booth, a friendly oasis in a rapidly changing neighborhood. Order a pisco sour, sit back, and take it all in.
Restaurant of the Year Readers’ Choice Winner
Readers also voted for Celeste as Restaurant of the Year.
Additional Restaurant of the Year Nominees
La Bodega, Talulla, Whaling in Oklahoma
Chef of the Year
John daSilva of Chickadee The Innovation and Design Building, 21 Dry Dock Ave., Seaport District, Boston
Angela Cook/Studio AC Photography
John daSilva of Chickadee
Many locals first got to know John daSilva’s food when he was at the helm of the small, lovely kitchen at Somerville’s Spoke Wine Bar, but before that, he was at Barbara Lynch’s No. 9 Park, where he and Chickadee co-owner Ted Kilpatrick forged a connection that would eventually beget the shiny Seaport District restaurant named for Massachusetts’ state bird.
At Chickadee, daSilva marries Mediterranean cuisine with New England ingredients; the pastas, in particular, are a highlight on the dinner menu (but don’t think of this as an Italian restaurant — at lunch, it’s all about the pitas and dips). Fans of daSilva’s work at Spoke should start with the squid ink fusilli, featuring a delicate ink and olive breadcrumb topping that is a callback to those Somerville days. But the rest of the menu delights, too, as daSilva showcases unexpected pairings that taste like they were always meant to be together. Take the roasted porchetta, for example, which is garnished with fried peanuts and a light anchovy-based sauce called colatura. In the summer, there was also watermelon and jalapeno on the plate; now, it’s Brussels sprouts and pear. It’s a truly unique dish that comes together so easily, you’ll wonder why you never thought to combine those ingredients.
Chickadee has it all: hospitality that is polished but not stilted, a creative cocktail program that plays well with the food, and a soothing design. It’s a refuge tucked away in the still-quiet far edge of the never-ending construction zone that is the Seaport District, and it’s an excellent platform for daSilva’s culinary skills, as well as a brilliant ownership debut from daSilva and Kilpatrick.
Chef of the Year Readers’ Choice Winner
Readers also voted for John daSilva as Chef of the Year.
Additional Chef of the Year Nominees
Jason Cheek of Southern Proper, Tiffani Faison of Fool’s Errand, Tzurit Or of Tatte Bakery & Cafe
Design of the Year
Nahita 100 Arlington St., Back Bay, Boston
Nahita [Official Photo]
Nahita
Nahita is a truly international endeavor: The cuisine is Latin-American-meets-Asian, with a focus on Nikkei cuisine, or the intersection between Peruvian and Japanese. (Think lots of carefully plated raw fish dishes, from tiraditos and ceviches to sashimi.) But there’s also a hint of Turkey, as the ownership team Doğuş Restaurant Entertainment and Management (d.ream) is based there. (The group is also behind the growing restaurant chain of Turkish butcher and internet sensation “Salt Bae.”)
For the design of Nahita — which is the group’s first New England restaurant and draws inspiration from one of their Turkish restaurant brands, Fenix — d.ream called back the design firm that worked on Fenix, Istanbul- and London-based Zeynep Fadıllıoglu Design.
Like Fenix, Nahita is filled with impressive columns, intricate tile work, and a striking mural, all brought together by lush greenery. There’s leather, marble, and luxury. It’s a palace, it’s a jungle, it’s a venue equally suited for a festive celebration, a romantic evening, or a business meeting. Nahita even has a secretive bar space, open by special invitation or rentable for private events, called Fenix.
Design of the Year Readers’ Choice Winner
Casa Caña Studio Allston, 1234 Soldiers Field Rd., Allston
Rachel Leah Blumenthal/Eater
Casa Caña
It’s colorful, it’s fun, it’s full of frozen daiquiris. Located in the Studio Allston hotel — an attractive rebirth of the drab Days Hotel — Casa Caña provides a taste of Latin America, zeroing in on Cuba. The restaurant comes from a collaboration between the Lyons Group (Back Bay Social Club, Bleacher Bar, Sonsie, and lots more) and the team behind Southie’s Publico Street Bistro, and Boston-based architectural firm Dyer Brown worked on the project as well. There’s a tropical green-blue color scheme, wicker light fixtures, and a large selection of photographs of Cuba by Lucy Sargent Lyons, who is the daughter of Lyons Group founder Patrick Lyons. Plus, there’s a great patio.
Additional Design of the Year Nominees
Boston Chops (Downtown Crossing), Gen Sou En Tea House
Fast-Casual Restaurant of the Year
Dakzen 195 Elm St., Davis Square, Somerville
Rachel Leah Blumenthal/Eater
Tom yum noodle soup at Dakzen
There’s nothing wrong with the standard Thai-American delivery and takeout American diners have grown accustomed to; we all need a heaping pile of sweet pad thai and crispy spring rolls now and then. But for those who want to delve into unapologetically funky, fishy, fiery Thai food that doesn’t hold back, the Boston area is fortunate to have a growing Thai restaurant scene in this vein. One of the latest additions, Dakzen, will redefine what you think of as pad thai — the dried shrimp are key — and introduce you to a wide array of soups, noodles, and curries that will have you booking your trip to Thailand right away.
A few must-tries, although everything is superb: The tom yum noodle soup, packed with ground peanuts, ground pork, fish cake, fish balls, and more, delivers a spicy and sour slow burn. The khao soi is gentler, a warming taste of northern Thailand, and peppercorns bring the pad kee mow to new heights. Keep an eye out for specials, too: The restaurant featured several different curries for a week at a time throughout November, and each was a winner.
The bustling restaurant falls somewhere between fast-casual and full-service; a server will take your order at the table, immediately collect payment, and later deliver the food, but it’s up to you to grab utensils and such from a table in the back. And please, bus your table when you’re done.
Fast-Casual Restaurant of the Year Readers’ Choice Winner
Hot Box 1 Bow Market Way, Bow Market, Union Square, Somerville
Rachel Leah Blumenthal/Eater
Junior beef (three-way) at Hot Box
From the team behind popular Bay Village sandwich shop Mike & Patty’s comes Hot Box, a restaurant that focuses on two distinct regional specialties that get locals’ nostalgia going. One, still playing on the team’s sandwich skills, is the North Shore-style roast beef sandwich, featuring rare, thinly sliced roast beef on a sesame seed or onion roll (depending on the sandwich size) and the traditional “three-way” topping combo of mayo, barbecue sauce, and American cheese. The other half of Hot Box is South Shore bar pizza, featuring perfectly browned cheese that reaches almost to the edge of the charred crust. Will you choose sandwich or pizza, North Shore or South Shore? (Choose both — no one’s stopping you — and then bring your food into one of Bow Market’s fine drinking establishments, such as Remnant Brewing or Eater Boston 2018 Bar of the Year nominee Rebel Rebel.)
Additional Fast-Casual Restaurant of the Year Nominees
Exodus Bagels, Oisa Ramen
Bar of the Year
Nathálie Wine Bar 186 Brookline Ave., Fenway, Boston
Nathálie Wine Bar [Official Photo]
Nathálie Wine Bar
2018 was a good year for unique wine lists, intimate spaces, and unique wine lists in intimate spaces. Much like its big sister Haley.Henry, a Downtown Crossing hit, Nathálie delivers the goods in Fenway. The long, narrow space feels like a special hideaway, especially in the chaos of a neighborhood full of enthusiastic sports fans and new developments sprouting up every day. The genial staff will guide you toward a wine you’ve never seen, most likely from a small-production, natural, woman-owned winery. Let one of those cozy blue bar stools — chairs, really — envelop you as you drink.
While Nathálie’s focus is on the wine, don’t overlook the food. The menu is short but covers the bases, from wine-friendly snacks like smothered toasts, corn nuts, and olives to a rotating selection of larger entrees, like pork shoulder lasagna.
Owner Haley Fortier, managing partner Kristie Weiss, and executive chef David Cavilla, all alums of Barbara Lynch’s empire, built up a magical little space downtown and have done it again in Fenway, providing the perfect destination whether it’s baseball season or not.
Bar of the Year Readers’ Choice Winner
Backlash Beer Company 152 Hampden St., Roxbury, Boston
Helder Pimentel/Backlash Beer Co.
Backlash Beer Co.
Longtime contract brewer, first-time brewery: Backlash, established back in 2011, finally opened its own space in an old piano factory in Roxbury and took the readers’ choice vote for 2018 Bar of the Year. It’s a solid taproom, offering the now-expected combination of snacks, games, and the like, but it’s also a boon for its neighborhood, a fairly industrial intersection in Roxbury without too many dining and drinking options in the immediate vicinity. Look at the larger area, though, and it’s becoming quite a space for local beverage brands, with Bully Boy Distillers a five-minute walk down the street and Dorchester Brewing Company just a mile away. Head to Backlash for strong IPAs, stouts, and more.
Additional Bar of the Year Nominees
Blossom Bar, Rebel Rebel
Congratulations to all of the 2018 winners and nominees, and thank you to the readers who took the time to vote for the readers’ choice awards. Stay tuned for more year-end coverage as 2018 draws to a close, and be sure to email us if there are any exciting 2019 openings coming up that should be on our radar.

10 Trips to Take With Your Tax Refund This Year
The tax deadline has come and gone and now you’re eagerly waiting for that refund to hit your bank account… and probably daydreaming about where to spend it. While you might feel obligated to save that money (the average tax refund is $3,120 according to the IRS), you’ve worked hard this year and there’s no reason not to spoil yourself!
To inspire you, we looked at the median weekly rate for a 2-bedroom rental in the US this summer. What we found were 10 surprisingly affordable places your tax refund will cover. Here they are, along with our favorite free attraction in each city.
Catalina Island, California ($2,856/week)
Just 22 miles off the coast of California and easy to reach by sea or air, Catalina Island is the picture-perfect place to spend your tax refund. Cruise along in your golf cart to explore the coast and feel the refreshing sea breeze whip through your hair. Packed your swimsuit? Reserve a cabana at Descanso Beach Club or dive into the Gulf of Santa Catalina to snorkel alongside schools of colorful fish. Book a rental in the hills and wake up to ocean views each morning—you’ll feel a million miles away from the mainland!
Free Attraction: The Nature Center at Avalon Canyon

The 2.5-mile Freedom Trail can’t be missed, while a peaceful swan boat ride through the Public Garden is the pinnacle of a sunny summer day in the city. Check out exhibits at the Museum of Fine Arts, browse trendy shops on Newbury Street, or take a tour of Fenway Park. No matter what you do, Boston will quickly work its way into your heart.

Charleston, South Carolina ($2,065/week)
In Charleston, you’ll indulge in gourmet food, admire swoon-worthy antebellum mansions, embrace the meaning of Southern hospitality, and so much more. Head to Fort Sumter to see where the first shot of the Civil War was fired, or keep things light with a stroll past Rainbow Row down to the waterfront. The Charleston City Market combines history and shopping, while King Street offers a plethora of restaurants and bars, perfect for an evening jaunt. On your way out of town, stop to walk across the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge—the amazing views and photo-ops make the 5-mile walk well worth it!
