🔥Coriolanus Snow

abyssal in my inbox.... shocking news (hiiii!!!!!)

i really have nothing positive to say about snow, both within the ballad and the original trilogy. as coriolanus, and especially coryo, we see that he has so much room to do good. he owned hereditary kindness from his mother which lingered over his head. owned so many chances through his interactions with others, knowing what it looks like to be down on your luck and kicked in the side, and yet damns those he loves to the same destiny without a second glance. he is the one pulling the noose around everyone's necks, knowing that he remembers the burn of the very same rope.

he had so much hope and trust harboured by others, and set that aside for his own personal assets again and again. as president snow, he goes on to path the same fate once more — indoctrinating, selling, sentencing and harming his victors, (and overall the citizens of panem) through the ringer of a deep hell. inherited from his father was a cruelty that was seated comfortably in his being, and when given the chance to pluck that root? he allowed it to grow into a city of thorns.

June vs August tierlist, Inspired by @persephoneprice

Note that I feel like my opinions haven't really changed that much. I just changed the categories and started rounding down when I was unsure to go with one tier or another (in the last one, I couldn't stay consistent with rounding up or down). The only real winner is Grandma'am who stars in many a funny little thought... I tried to have this be more reflective of how much I think about the people... really I can find anyone interesting if I try hard enough.

mano po is an exploration of a half-filipino!finnick odair and the morals taught to him as he goes through his games and after. listen to your elders. show respect to those with seniority. be grateful. even the idea of "utang na loob", which (for those who don't know) is being indebted to people who showed kindness to you. if they do you a favor, you must do something to return always.

when finnick odair is reaped, he is meant to bring honor to a disaster-ridden district that's left to pick up the pieces of their former glory purged by a large magnitude earthquake. as the first career reaped in 3 years, the rest being nobodies who didn't stand a chance in the arena, he was a beacon of hope. he does everything to please the crowd, applying his morals to the games the best he can.

everything backfires when he's presented with a client. an older one. and his worldview crumbles as he realizes that seniority doesn't always mean wisdom or knowing what's best for you. seniority meant power, and not the good kind.

One day, she won’t spend all of Panem History class staring at Clemensia Dovecote and desperately wishing to be her, with her beautiful silky black hair and perfect skin, instead.

Vipsania Sickle still brings up the way Persphone began sobbing at the sight in order to get a laugh from the older boys at The Academy.

Egnatius was a nobody and Festus was a creed, so Festus just got a couple days detention while Egnatius got a night in the emergency department.

Realizing that it’s probably too personal of a question to ask the great-nephew of the President of Panem, she quickly back tracks and begins talking about the flowers.

Been sitting on this AU for a while and a discord conversation brought it back to my attention (thanks @felixravinstills) so here I am, typing it out on my one free day instead of writing like I should be doing.

The Capitol speaks in Panem's version of "standard" English, while the districts all have dialects that are so different from standard that they may as well be different languages entirely. Now, the districts can understand one another's dialect due to similarities and influences left over from the rebellion days, as well as due to inter-district trading and stories passed down through generations. However, the Capitol views these dialects and the accents they cause when a district citizen speaks standard English as a sign of being "lesser" so they stay as far away from it as possible, so they don't understand a word of it.

Come the 10th games where the mentors are forced to interact with the tributes, this seemingly random factoid about Panem turns into the thing that stops the games for good and brings Gaul's life to ruination. At first, the mentors are very snooty and classist about the tributes' accents, but when they start to care about their tributes it becomes an endearing thing to them. Slightly infantilizing but it's better than dehumanizing so the tributes that notice decide to take it. Now, I could go the depressing route and tell you the mentors try to learn their respective tribute's dialect post-games because it's the only thing they have of their tribute that isn't stained by the games. The stories they shared are nothing but memories, any item they have is sent back to their families. Anything they may have made for them was created with stuff from the zoo where the tributes were forced to stay and humiliated daily in the leadup to their brutal death. But their dialects? That's something the mentors can learn, and it's the only concrete thing they can have of the child that died on their watch that's from before they were forced into these horrifying circumstances. However, I'm gonna make this a fix-it instead :)

Now, this whole situation happens because none of the mentors die during the bombing, which means the Capitol is far less up in a tizzy about rebel activity. It doesn't mean much, but it leaves them just the tiniest bit more open to hearing positive things about the districts. While in the zoo, the tributes talk to each other in dialect because they can understand one another and it feels more like being at home that way. They won't let the Capitol force them into speaking standard when they don't have to and nobody cares if those Capitol pricks can't understand what they're saying. It's a positive, if anything. Some mentors are visiting and when one (probably Arachne because I'm ignoring the stabbing bit) gets prickly about them not speaking "proper" English with a comment about it being "a sign of lesser beings," Brandy responds by snippily asking her which one of them can understand the other either way. "If only one of us can speak both, who's the stupid one again?" Arachne is affronted (though her ego gets out of the way the next day and she realizes Brandy has a point, causing her to try to start over with her tribute by being a little nicer) but the other people present stop immediately to think about that. Especially those who know a lot about language. That whole dialect thing means the tributes know more vocabulary, more grammar than the Capitol citizens. And they have to seperate them too so they're not mixing languages! Clearly they're not that stupid then, so even if they are still lesser beings... Maybe it's worth being a little more nuanced?

Of course it never stays at just a little, in fact it starts spiralling quite uncontrollably. If the district kids are smart enough to essentially speak two languages... What else are they smart enough for? And with the extra scrutiny on the tributes their individual personalities and interests, and even more so their interpersonal dynamics and relationships, become utterly unavoidable. Coral's care for Mizzen despite how game-faced she is in every other facet of the games, Reaper's concern for Dill despite appearing to be the most dangerous amongst the tributes, Bobbin's anger that only seems to be gone entirely when it comes to Wovey, Treech and Lamina's complicated road of trying to figure out where they stand with each other when they clearly both know they'll have to leave one another eventually and the way it so obviously eats at them both, Marcus and Sejanus and whatever it is that's going on between the two of them. As all of this starts gaining traction in the Capitol, it becomes harder and harder for Gaul to keep up her narrative of "undressing humanity" and the districts deserving this. Especially when her biggest supporter, the president himself, ends up paying a visit to the zoo at Felix's insistence and sees first-hand the way these kids interact with one another as well as the visitors in the zoo. Their obvious disdain for their situation and those who came to oggle at them while they're literally being treated like animals, but also their small soft spots for the kids who don't know any better. The way they can't quite bring themselves to be mean to small children, even when those children see them as dumb animals put there for their entertainment.

President Maximinius Ravinstill is not a kind man. Nor is he a gentle, merciful one. He's cold and he's vicious. President Maximinius Ravinstill is a cruel man. But at the end of the day, he's just that. A man. One who has a son himself, though he's not been the best father he could have been. And while at first he'd thought he'd stay for five minutes to satisfy Felix and go back to his life again unaffected... Maximinius stays for hours, noticed only by those from the Capitol. Entirely unnoticed by the kids, though they watch him with curiosity at first due to the reactions of everyone outside the cage upon his initial arrival. Most of them don't even know who he is, and not a single one of them cares. That's how little they've been allowed to know of the outside world, and that's how little they care for the Capitol. All any of them are to these kids is the cause of their misery, and President Ravinstill may be a cold dictator, but Maximinius is a father who can only see his young son, hurt and bleeding and starving, in the faces of these young children. Especially in young Mizzen, whose face lacks the youthful chub it should have due to lack of nutrition the same way his son's had all those years ago. In Otto and Treech, who are of similar age and share just enough features with Felix to be discomforting, despite the district characteristics that had let Maximinius and everybody else in the Capitol write them off as "other" for a decade now. Long before that too, if he's honest with himself.

And President Ravinstill shouldn't care, but Maximinius can't help himself. For so long he's allowed differing physical appearances and a lack of education he himself reinforced to let him believe these kids were somehow lesser, but now that he's seen the parallels and the similarities he can't unsee them. And Maximinius is just a man, with the emotions of one and a heart that beats no matter how cold he's allowed it to become over the years. Part of him wants to go back to delusion, to ignorance and cruelty, but his heart won't let him. It aches and screams for him to do something because he knows he can. If anyone can it's him, and he'll never go back to the way he used to be before this realization. Since he already knows what Gaul will tell him, he talks to Dean Highbottom, the creator of the games, in hopes of solving this dilemma. It becomes the final straw that pushes him to accept the truth: he'll never truly live again if he allows this to continue, so he doesn't. He puts a stop to Gaul's machinations and ends the games right them and there.

Naturally, the situation in the districts also improves due to this shift in perspective, though it's a far slower and less sudden change. The tributes are finally given medical care, which saves Otto, Ginnee, Panlo and Sheaf from death. They all have to stay in hospital or under close supervision for about a month due to the drastic impact staying in a zoo enclosure, with no protection from nature while not being properly fed, has had on their health. When they're let out of hospital but deemed too unstable to travel they get to stay with their mentors. Of course, once they're finally deemed healthy enough to go home they're positively ecstatic but sad enough about leaving their mentors that they find ways to stay in contact and offer to show them around their home district at some point in the future, which the mentors of course happily agree to.

Magnus vs Maximinius

I found out yesterday that President Ravinstill has an actual first name in the movie and now I'm just side-eyeing the name I've been using before that.

Now the question is ... do I commit to the bit or do I change?

@felixravinstills sent a comic in the chat yesterday about Pompey and the names 'Magnus' and 'Maximus'. I got me thinking, maybe I can sort of use both names?

Based on Abyssal's findings with figuring out Maximinius' name, I think we're going with it meaning 'the best'.

And if Magnus means 'the Great'... I've been thinking, what if I did this: Set his real name as Maximinius and have Magnus as the nickname that Hector used.

The nickname is coined for the silliest reason ever - in their school days, Max is a bit too arrogant about getting good grades.

And when their marks from their latest science test come back, guess who has the higher grade? Hector.

You're great, but not the best. Maybe we should you call you 'Magnus' instead - Hector.

For the rest of the year, Hector consistently beat him out in marks in science class. Then the nickname just sort of stuck.

i didn’t, but your ask did get me thinking about both felix and clemensia being sent back…

@felixravinstills wrote this response about felix landing back at eighteen as well as made this post about felix landing back at five (right after his parents die). also i have a oneshot about felix time travelling from dill’s pov. 

@meekmedea has an entire masterpost for their time travelling clemmie au where she lands back at eight-years-old. but also wrote a fic where clemensia ends up back at eighteen right before the tributes arrive. and i have a pov swap from reaper’s perspective for their fic.

anyway, onto felix and clemmie in the past!

there’s a couple different ways i could see this going, but i’m going to assume in all these cases that they died around their 30s (probably coriolanus, for different reasons- clemensia was likely a risk for him since they were friends and he didn’t want anyone who knew him that closely to potentially turn on him, and felix’s family name gave him a political influence that coriolanus wanted to get rid of). anyway: 

i. back to the games

i think they’d catch onto each other pretty quickly in this case. with so little time before the tributes arrive, if they want to gain any kind of favor, it’s going to have to be pretty distinct. clemensia was just planning on going to the train station to meet reaper, when she finds out that everyone is heading to the station on account of felix insisting that it be made a class trip, if mentoring the tributes is meant to be a class assignment. 

clemensia puts it together quickly after that. there’s likely going to be some debate on whether she reveals to felix that she’s also a time traveller, and eventually decides it’d be more advantageous to loop him in. besides, since they’re mentoring the same district, it wouldn’t be odd to see them together ‘making plans’ as it were.

so she does. felix hasn’t actually realized that coriolanus was the one to get him killed yet, but that’s mostly because coriolanus kept himself more distanced when he killed felix. clemensia fills him in with her suspicions though, and after a quick panic over worrying there might be other time travellers among them, they start to make some plans.

short term plans include being better mentors & keeping any of their classmates from dying with clemensia handling the former since she’s more personable (felix objects to this, claiming he’s plenty charming, but he doesn’t win that argument) and felix dealing with the latter (because if there’s one thing that he can do by throwing his name around, it’s getting better security measures put in place).

it is much harder than expected to get dill the medicine she needs, and it ends with getting most (if not all) the tributes some better conditions out of ‘fairness’ (i.e. food, water, medicine, etc.) but doesn’t help with the fact that they’re all still in the zoo. except...it kind of does, because investing more materials also leads to many of the mentors investing more time, and somewhat growing pretty attached - not enough to do anything as drastic as actually speak out against the games, but enough to ‘conveniently not notice’ when a mysterious scuffle draws the peacekeepers’ attention away during the preparation for the tribute interviews and about a third of the tributes are gone by the time there’s a headcount.

there’s some talk about this being planned, but felix throws a fit about how dare you and what are you implying and this never would have happened if you knew how to do your jobs properly and don’t you know who i am?? they back of pretty quick after that. 

security around the zoo gets tighter in the days following, supposedly. mostly it’s just gaul heading announcements about what a threat the escaped tributes are. it’s not helped by the ‘tighter security’ being found unconscious one morning and the zoo enclosure completely empty. it throws the general capitol population into a bit of a frenzy. there are rumors and complaints about how the quality of peacekeepers have gone down drastically, though no one knows where they started (it was clemensia).

their original plan was nowhere near this, but with how little time they had to plan things out, they’re basically just manipulating everyone around them to turn a blind eye - the tributes aren’t stupid, they can tell which mentors are sympathetic enough to rely on. not trust, exactly, but that they know won’t get them punished.

with the chaos of the tributes’ escape being a huge distraction for most of the capitol higher-ups, felix and clemensia have to finally confront coriolanus - not about the murdering them in the future thing, since he wouldn’t know about that, but about his attitude (since he’s has been pretty upset and confused about clemensia being more distant with him lately for seemingly no reason). felix is all for going full spite and making sure he never gains any sort of power ever again. clemensia agrees, but it’s also a lot harder for her to separate herself from coriolanus considering she had considered him a pretty close friend right up until she had gotten killed.

realistically, things probably wouldn’t go this smoothly, but it’s more fun to think about the various shenanigans they get into undermining coriolanus & aiding the tributes while “100% definitely not involved whatsoever” with the escape.

ii. back to eighteen (start of year)

sneakiest of the three options - they’re old enough to properly use their family’s influence, but also have more than enough time to make more gradual change. it starts small: some comments here and there, testing the waters to see how much they can say and still have people agree. 

clemensia starts to drift away from coriolanus, whereas felix grows openly antagonistic with him. clemmie’s main goal is to undermine gaul though - she has not forgiven gaul about the snakes and would not like a repeat of being bitten, thank you very much. since clemensia and felix aren’t close friends anymore (they were closer when they were younger), it takes a while for either of them to realize that the other is different. 

sure, they’ve noticed some changes, but had attributed different attitudes to their own influence. some changes, though, they couldn’t explain, and it only really starts to make sense when they come to the “oh, you’re here too” realization. felix is on board with the deplatform gaul plan, but it’s still a pretty difficult endeavor considering gaul has a close relationship with the president. felix might be his great-nephew, but he doesn’t think he can undermine her that way. 

coriolanus throws an extra wrench into things by assuming that, with felix and clemensia spending more time together, that felix is the reason clemensia is pulling away from him. it turns into a mix of high school drama and political subterfuge, where somehow the former is much more difficult for either of them to deal with. 

iii. back to their childhood

in the case where they land back in war times, their experiences are pretty different. felix is mostly doing family bonding time because he now has the perspective to actually connect with his much older cousins. clemensia, on the other hand, is majorly lamenting having to do childhood all over again. she was an adult! with independence! and she has to do primary school again! 

also, since i’m so fond of inky_dream’s trio of clemmie, felix, and iphigenia - they are definitely childhood friends. they haven’t gotten a chance to meet as much around the war, so interactions are pretty brief during those years, but once the war is over, clemensia and felix start to get odd feelings that things are much more different…

clemensia: wasn’t felix more of a brat at this age? felix: i feel like clemensia was less forward at this age… clemmie & felix: wait a minute-

iphigenia is pretty sure her friends have a crush on each other and is internally giggling at all their interactions. what’s actually happening is clemensia and felix trying to subtly test out if the other is actually a time traveller or not without actually saying it aloud. it comes to a head when sejanus ends up moving to the capitol and clemensia befriends him. 

felix essentially goes “yeah, no. actual-eight-year-old clem wouldn’t have done that.” and confronts her in private. clemensia has her “i knew it” moment and now they’re on the same page…except they’re also physically eight and there is a limited number of things they can realistically do being this young. people are hardly going to listen to the opinions of not-even-pre-teens.

it does help that iphigenia has roped sejanus into her plan to get her friends together because anytime they need to privately talk to make plans, iphigenia and sejanus are more than willing to cover for them so they can “have some time alone ;)” 

basically, it’s nia and sej being silly kids. buuut…felix and clemmie don’t realize that iphigenia and sejanus have made that misconception and assume the opposite. 

iphigenia & sejanus: aww our friends have crushes <33 nia & sej: we should give them time alone nia, aloud: oh nooo - i just forgot that i have to do something far away from here sej, aloud: um, me too! i’ll join you. far away. ;D felix & clemmie: wow, iphigenia and sejanus must really like each other if they keep trying to leave the two of us to they can be together. that’s cute. and it gives us the chance to get some private time to plan!

this one’s a mix of fluff and angst - lower stakes since they’re much younger and have more time, but also they’ve pretty much lost everyone they knew. if they change things, all the people they knew will grow up to be different people. similar, maybe, but not the same. and as much as they try to forget that, it’s not easy seeing those familiar faces and realizing that the differences they create are shaping different people too.

i do like to think everything works out for the better though ^^

(these were all written with felix & clemmie as a friendship, but they could easily dip into a felix/clemensia romance - especially for scenario #3 where they really only have each other to talk to since everyone else is treating them like children.)

17. talk about your writing and editing process — my process is usually something close to organized. i have the fic idea in my head, maybe some dialogue or some imagery of a scene that really sticks out to me, and then i go on ao3 and add tags and my layout. i write in the box where most will copy & past their already written bits, because i find it helps me get into a state of ‘this is something to publish. not a drabble.’ whereas if i were in my notes app or google docs, it would likely be an untouched, unposted drabble. it's the atmosphere for me, always!

29. how easy is it for you to come up with titles? — quite! i take my titles from songs most often, and will loosely base my fics off of those. other times it'll simply just be one word, or a sentence that i've come up with.

12. Compliment someone in your fandom

I'm gonna go with @boabel just for always being a positive presence, and @felixravinstills for managing to come up with something bonkers then turning around and making it into something that makes perfect sense

14. Ship that always makes you smile

Taking this opportunity to come out as a lumberhouse shipper, anytime I see art of them or their included in fanfics I can't help but smile.

16. A tiny detail in canon that you want more people to appreciate.

Mostly just tiny character details that never made it into the film, Pup Harrington has braces, Bobbin could have easily been mistaken for a 10 year old, One of the female tributes had a broken tooth though which one is never specified (I always believed it to be sheaf)

In the main trilogy its the fact that district twelve has a candy store that has managed to stay open all this time.
