Goodnight Kiss
Fandom: The Outer Worlds Pairing: Felix Millstone/Nonbinary Captain (Tibbs) Rating: Teen+ Word Count: 3937 [AO3 link in Comment Section]
-------------------------------------
Tossball, the greatest sport in Halcyon.
Or rather, the only sport in Halcyon.
Either way, Tibbs is a fan… and not just because of present company.  Okay, maybe it hadn’t started that way.  True, the first time they’d asked Felix to explain the rules to them had merely been an excuse to spend more time with him, but since actually hearing the rules they’d fallen head over heels for the game.  Initially it had reminded them of the Earth game lacrosse, but any game that encourages killing your opponent and being disqualified for “overly sportsman-like conduct” definitely had their attention, and now game night had quickly become a standing tradition.
“Hey Nell!  Can you bring us another round?”  Felix called across the room, waving at the bartender.  Tibbs quickly hid their smirk behind their glass as Nell’s gaze settled on them.  Draining the foamy dredges in one gulp, they glanced over at Felix, oblivious and already focused back on the game.
The gnawing pang of jealousy Tibbs had felt upon their first meeting with the tossball loving bartender was nowhere to be found these days and they even managed a genuine grin to counter Nell’s somewhat strained one as she brought their fresh drinks over.  Felix tore his eyes from the screen long enough to thank her before grabbing his glass and nudging Tibbs enthusiastically in the ribs as the Rangers executed a particularly daring play. The disappointment in Nell’s lingering gaze was so obvious it was painful and had her affections been directed anywhere else, Tibbs would have felt sorry for her, maybe even put in a good word for her... but not with Felix.
The game was neck and neck, and as the night wore on the tension only mounted, reaching a fever pitch.  All other thought was driven from their mind as Tibbs leaned forward, holding their breath, their eyes glued to the fuzzy images of the players running around the screen.  To their side they were vaguely aware of Felix, half standing, clutching at their sleeve, squeezing their arm in apprehension, his eyes alight with frenzied excitement as the timer ticked down.
Time seemed to slow as Bertie “Black Hole” Holcomb launched the ball toward the goal.  Ceiren Frasier lunged for it, his stick missing by a hair, and a cry went up as the Rangers scored one second before the timer buzzed, winning them the game and sending them to the Pennant match.  Before they realized what was happening Tibbs was lifted from the ground, a pair of strong arms encircling their waist, squeezing them tightly and their giddy laughter mixed with Felix’s as he swung them around enthusiastically.  As he set them down heavily Tibbs stumbled back into his arms and froze. It wasn’t until their eyes met that Felix realized what he’d done, his face instantly colouring, though his hands still lingered at their waist.
Clearing his throat awkwardly he released them, stepping back quickly.  “Sorry boss,” he managed to stammer; his eyes flitting away sheepishly for a moment, “I got a little carried away… though can you blame me?  That was an amazing play!”
Tibbs snorted, trying to mask the fact that their heart was still pounding loudly in their ears.  “Hell yeah it was. I think we need a victory shot to celebrate.”
Awkwardness quickly forgotten, a grin spread across Felix’s face.  “Oh hell yes!”
One shot turned into three, which turned into five and by the time they’d stumbled out of the bar they had to hold each other up; Tibbs nearly tripping down the stairs and bringing Felix down with them.  “Whoa boss, careful there,” he exclaimed, slipping his arm around their waist and flushing as the captain leaned heavily into his side.
“Oops, sorry,” Tibbs snickered, blinking around them at the empty street.  “...Which way is the ship?”
“Uh…” Felix gaped, just as lost.  “I think… this way?” he guessed, turning them around.
“Then lead on!” Tibbs giggled, falling into step with him; warmth spreading up their side where they leaned against him.
The cool night air, well, cool for Monarch standards seemed to sober the two up slightly and they stumbled on in companionable silence; Felix sneaking glances at the Captain when he didn’t think they were looking.
“Hey boss, we’re gunna watch the Pennant match together, right?” he asked hesitantly, breaking the silence.
Tibbs looked up and flashed him a lopsided grin.  “Of course. I wouldn’t miss it for the world,” they slurred.
“Good,” Felix nodded to himself, “I’ve never really had anyone to watch the games with before… and it just makes them that much more fun with you there,” he admitted, glancing down at them.
A smile tugged at Tibbs’ lips at Felix’s words; butterflies swarming in their stomach.  “I like spending time with you too Felix.”
-------------------------
Inebriated, it took them longer than usual to navigate the streets of Stellar Bay, and by the time the two had staggered back onto the Unreliable, the rest of the crew were already in their bunks.  “I’m thirsty,” Tibbs announced as they crested the stairs to the crew quarters.
“Me too,” Felix agreed, trailing behind the captain to the kitchen and plopping down at the table.  His gaze followed them to the fridge as they yanked open the door and stuck their head inside.  Swallowing thickly he had to tear his gaze from their backside as they leaned over farther, digging through the ice box.  Hands full, Tibbs straightened, nudging the door shut with their hip before setting two bottles of purpleberry fizz onto the table between them and Felix.
“Here,” they said, sliding one of the bottles over to their companion.  “Gotta hydrate so you don’t wake up with a hangover tomorrow.”
“Oh yeah, I always forget that part,” Felix admitted ruefully, twisting off the cap.
Tibbs snorted softly as they settled back into their chair, watching Felix as they took a swig of their own soda.  “Hey Felix, can I ask you something?” they asked, knowing full-well that if they were sober they probably would’ve chickened out already, however at the moment they could care less.
“Sure boss, shoot.”
The lopsided grin he directed at them had their cheeks heating, but Tibbs doubted it would be noticeable over the flush from the alcohol.  “What did you think of me the first time we met?”
Felix set down his soda and chewed his lip, looking thoughtful.  “Well, I thought you were super cool, with your own spaceship ‘n all.  I mean, you looked like a real badass, like someone I’d wanna be friends with… and of course I hoped you’d let me travel with you.”  He paused for a moment and then smirked.  “Plus I gotta admit I thought you were super hot,” he said with a shrug, as if it were no big deal.
Fighting to keep their composure, Tibbs merely cocked their brow.  “ Ohh?”
“Well, yeah,” Felix replied slowly, “anyone with eyes would think so,” he added quickly.
Tibbs couldn’t help the amused chuckle that burst from their lips.  “And what do you think of me now?”
“Now?” Felix mused, fidgeting with the neck of his soda bottle.  “Now I know you’re a badass,” he replied with a laugh of his own.  “But like also, you’re a good person.  You’re constantly going out of your way to help folks, and even if it's on your own terms you’re still doing good.  I think…” he paused again, as if searching for the right words.  “I think there’s a lot more to you than you show most people and I’m glad I’m one of the few who actually gets to see that.”
“Felix…” Tibbs murmured, touched, but before they could dwell on his words for too long he scooted his chair closer and leaned in, his voice lowering, hazel eyes holding them hostage.
“Now it’s your turn boss.  Tell me something you’ve never told anyone else before.”
“Uh, okay… let’s see…” they mused, leaning in closer as well.  Again an alcohol induced impulsiveness overtook them and Tibbs blurted out the first thing that came to mind.  “For a long time I was jealous of Nell.”
Thick eyebrows furrowing, Felix frowned in thought.  “How come?” he asked, clearly puzzled.
Tibbs cleared their throat before sitting back in their chair and answering, their eyes flicking away.  “Because I thought you liked her.”
Still confused, Felix tilted his head.  “Why would I like Nell when you’re so much cooler?”
“Wait, what?” Tibbs asked with a start, choking on their soda, but Felix didn’t seem to hear them, chewing his lip until his eyes widened.
“Wait, are you saying what I think you’re saying boss?”
The reality of what they’d just admitted hit them, forcing its way through their alcohol dampened senses.  “I-I mean…” they stuttered, mentally kicking themself. This wasn’t exactly how they had imagined this conversation going.
Wait, was he grinning?
Indeed, a very pleased, albeit somewhat incredulous expression was plastered to Felix’s face as he watched them.
“You were jealous?  I had no idea boss. All this time, I never really imagined you liked me too.”
Too?   Tibbs gaped at him, dumbfounded.  “You mean…?”
Felix’s laughter washed over them and their face flushed to the roots of their auburn hair.  “Damn boss, I’ve never seen you so tongue tied before and you’re turning red.  You must really like me, huh?”
“You’re enjoying this too much,” Tibbs countered, ignoring his question while managing to claw out a modicum of composure in the face of his smug teasing.
“Yeah, I am.”  He answered simply, still smirking.  “It’s not often I get to tease you.  It’s usually the other way round.”
“Yeah well, don’t get used to it,” Tibbs huffed, taking another swig of soda.
“Oh no, I think I want to,” Felix insisted, still grinning like an idiot; his excitement infectious and Tibbs couldn’t stop from grinning back.
“Fine, but only you.  Anyone else tries to pull that shit and they’re going out the airlock.”
“Whatever you say, captain,” he said with a shrug, spreading his hands.
Their laughter died down and the kitchen grew quiet once again; the only sound the hum of the ship.
“So… what do we do about… this?  Felix asked gesturing between Tibbs and himself.  “I’ve never been, uh… serious about something like this before.  And I really really don’t want to mess anything up,” he said earnestly.
“Yeah, same hat,” Tibbs murmured, looking at their hands.  At least, if they had been in a serious relationship before, they couldn’t remember it.  Either way, Felix was their best friend and the last thing they wanted was to bungle things and lose him.  “I think we should talk more about this tomorrow… when we’re sober,” they suggested with a wry chuckle.
“Sounds good to me,” Felix agreed and pushed himself to his feet; his whole demeanor pleased.  “Let me walk you home.”
Tibbs looked at his hand blankly before letting him pull them to their feet.  “My room’s just down the hall,” they pointed out with an amused snort.
“So?  That’s what you’re supposed to do after a date, right?”
Tibbs supposed he was right, comical though it was.  Wait, did this really count as a date?  Leaning into his side against the faint spinning in their head, Tibbs let him escort them back to their cabin, marveling at how right it felt to have his arm around them.  Just outside their door Felix hesitated and Tibbs turned after crossing the threshold, leaning out into the hall.
“ Yeees?” they asked, cocking an eyebrow.  “It looks like you have something to say.”
Felix cleared his throat and scratched at the back of his head.  “So…” he paused, his gaze falling to Tibbs’ mouth. “Do I get a goodnight kiss at least?”
The question caught them off guard and the vacant look on their face must have worried Felix because he quickly began to backpedal, assuring them he was only joking, until a smirk quirked Tibbs’ lips and they grasped the collar of his shirt, jerking him forward.  Their lips collided, cutting off Felix’s words with a surprised grunt that quickly melted to a soft whimper as Tibbs pulled back.
His dazed “holy shit” brought a breathless laugh to their tingling lips, but before they could make a coy comeback Felix’s hands were at their waist, eagerly hauling them forward.  As their lips met again Tibbs stumbled backward at his intensity, pulling Felix with them into their room. The door slid shut behind him with a hiss and moments later his back was pressed against it with Tibbs pressed against him.
Breaking apart only long enough to catch their breaths Felix awkwardly hoisted the captain into his arms to mount the stairs to their quarters, thinking himself suave.
“Don’t you dare drop me, Felix Millstone,” Tibbs hissed, wrapping their legs around his waist as he staggered up the stairs.
“Don’t worry boss, I wouldn’t dream of it,” he assured them before reeling backward with a panicked gasp; Tibbs yelping in tandem and tightened their hold on him.  Regaining his balance he continued the climb, trying to reset the mood; his hands sliding lower. “See, made it!”
“Barely,” Tibbs pointed out wryly, but excitement thrummed through them all the same.
As soon as they reached the top Felix dropped Tibbs to their feet and his mouth was on theirs once again, his hands cupping their jaw as his lips moved against theirs, meeting over and over.  Stumbling backwards toward the bed Tibbs’ hands tangled in Felix’s vest, desperately yanking at the fabric as he eagerly followed. Shrugging the garment off quickly he let it fall to the floor, his shirt following before helping Tibbs undress as well.
Masterfully toeing off their boots as they walked and kicking them away, Tibbs stopped as the backs of their legs hit the edge of their bunk.  However, in his haste to shed his own boots Felix lost his balance again, pitching forward and toppling them both onto the mattress in a half-dressed heap accompanied by Tibbs’ muffled shriek of surprise.  Not letting the small mishap interrupt him Felix crawled over them capturing their lips once more.  The hunger behind his kisses had their head swimming and Tibbs writhed against him as his hands wandered and his tongue swiped against their lips, chasing all thought away.
Moaning into their mouth Felix pulled back to catch his breath and huffed a soft laugh.
“What?”  Tibbs asked, brows furrowing softly.
“You taste like purpleberry,” he replied, grinning goofily down at them.  “I like it.”
Tibbs snorted, laughing harder and soon Felix was echoing them; both of them laughing like idiots until they were gasping for breath and Tibbs let their head fall back against their pillows, their eyes fluttering shut and the rest of their laughter turning breathless.  When they opened their eyes they found Felix watching them, still sprawled atop them and there was a softness to his expression they’d never seen before.
“Are we really doing this?” he murmured almost to himself.
“Well, you were the one who wanted that goodnight kiss,” Tibbs pointed out coyly.
Felix chuckled before turning somber once more.  “No, I mean… you and me. Me and you. This.”  He looked uncertain, as if afraid Tibbs would change their mind and push him off them.  “I mean, do you know how long I’ve wanted to kiss you?”
Golden brown eyes met hazel ones and Tibbs smiled softly, pushing up to press their lips to his.  The kiss was soft and lingering, and Felix nearly followed as they pulled back, not wanting it to end.
“Yeah, we are.”  Tibbs said, their brows creasing faintly.  “And just how long did you wanna kiss me for?”
“Long enough,” Felix muttered sheepishly before letting his head fall, resting his forehead against Tibbs’ chest.
Smiling to themself Tibbs laid back again, snuggling into their pillows before reaching up to card their fingers through Felix’s mop of soft dark hair.
“Mm that feels nice,” he groaned; his voice muffled against them.  “If you keep that up I might just fall asleep right here.”
“That’s okay.”
At Tibbs’ words Felix raised his head to gape at them.  “You want me to stay?”
“Yeah, why not?”  They shrugged, fighting back a grin, their fingers resuming their gentle massage against his scalp and Felix’s eyes nearly rolled up into his head as he collapsed back down with a sigh.
“Good, because you’re comfortable.”
Tibbs snorted fondly, rolling their head to the side to look out the viewport that took up most of the wall, gazing at the expanse of stars outside and soon Felix was snoring soundly, his arms wrapped around their waist comfortingly.
Yeah, I think I could get used to this, Tibbs thought before sleep overtook them as well.
-----------------------------
The next morning Felix shifted in his sleep and froze, his hand resting on something warm and soft.  Was there someone else in his bed?
Cracking an eye he glanced around.
This wasn’t his room at all.
Finally the events of the night before caught up to him and his eyes snapped open to gape at the captain, half undressed and entwined beneath him, snoring softly, but looking as peaceful as ever.  In fact Felix couldn’t remember ever seeing them quite this relaxed.
“It wasn’t a dream,” he whispered, full of awe and Tibbs stirred.
Groaning, they reached up to cradle their head and made a face before their eyes fluttered open slowly, wincing.  Frowning slightly they blinked blearily several times at Felix, as if unsure they were seeing correctly.  “Felix…?” they croaked uncertainly.
“Mornin boss,” he replied awkwardly, quickly removing his hand from their chest before they noticed and shifted so he wasn’t crushing them.  Concern laced his expression as he noticed the dark bags under their eyes, “you don’t look so hot.”
“Gee thanks Felix, that’s exactly what I wanted to hear upon waking from the guy I made out with and then fell asleep under last night,” Tibbs groaned, throwing their arm over their eyes.
“Sorry, I just meant you don’t look well.  Are you okay?” Felix clarified, wanting to feel their face to check if they were feverish, but afraid of overstepping a boundary.  Although, after falling asleep in their bunk with them there weren’t many boundaries left to cross.
Again Tibbs groaned, louder this time.  “I feel like shit.” Lifting their arm so they could see him they frowned.  “You’re not hungover?” It was less of a question and more of an observation.
Felix thought about it for a second and then shook his head.  “No, I feel fine. Actually I feel great.  I don’t think I’ve slept this well in a long time.”
“Good for you,” Tibbs grumbled before softening.  “Other than this splitting headache, I… I think I slept really well too.”
The faint flush that bloomed on their face was contagious and Felix could feel his own cheeks heating as well.  He still wasn’t used to seeing the captain so vulnerable, but he wanted to be, he wanted so badly to be used to it.  Clearing his throat, he tried not to dwell on the thoughts that were suddenly pressing against his consciousness.
“Soooo, last night we said we’d talk about this tomorrow, but I think we may have skipped a few steps in between there and here,” he said, gesturing to their still entwined bodies, slightly embarrassed.  “I didn’t mean to get so carried away.”
Tibbs snorted softly, their eyes finding his.  “Yeah, I’d say.” They shifted, bringing their hand up to hesitantly brush their fingers against his cheek.  “I got just as carried away last night, but… it doesn’t feel wrong though.”
Felix caught their hand in his and pressed their palm to his cheek, his eyes fluttering shut.  For a long moment he just stayed there, relishing the closeness he craved; Tibbs’ hand so warm against his skin.  Realizing the intimacy of the act he quickly released their hand, his eyes dropping awkwardly.  However Tibbs didn’t pull away, instead stroking the side of his face as they studied him.
“You wanna take me out again tonight, Millstone?”
Surprised, he gaped at them, his mouth falling open.  “You want to? I-I mean, yeah, of course!”
Tibbs’ answering smile faltered as they winced once more, their fingers pressing to their temples.  “Ughhh I want to enjoy this moment, dammit. Hangover go awayyyy,” they whined, squeezing their eyes shut.
An idea hit Felix and he pushed himself off the bed as gently as possible, so as not to jostle them.  As soon as they felt him move however, Tibbs’ eyes flew open. “Where are you going?”
The worry in their voice was endearing and Felix was quick to reassure them he’d be right back.  “I’m gunna see what I can get you for that headache.”
Tibbs’ face softened, their lips twitching into a small smile.  “You’re sweet…” they murmured, throwing their arm back over their face.  “Come back soon.”
Smiling to himself as he padded down the stairs Felix pulled his shirt over his head, aware he probably looked disheveled, but past caring; his thoughts decidedly elsewhere.  As soon as the door whooshed open, however, he froze, face to face with Parvati.  Her fist hovering over the space the door had just been, ready to knock and her mouth fell open as she gaped at Felix standing there.
“Felix?”  She asked, glancing past him wide-eyed into Tibbs’ cabin.  “Did you sleep with the captain last night?” she gasped, her voice raising an octave.
Quickly shushing her Felix leaned into the hall to see if anyone else was close enough to hear.  “It’s not like that, Parvati!” he exclaimed hastily.   “Well, I mean, it is, but it isn’t.  I slept with the captain, but I didn’t sleep with the captain,” he tried to clarify.  The horrified look on the mechanic’s face wasn’t helping matters and he couldn’t help rambling further, digging himself deeper.  “It’s not that I didn’t want to, I did… want to.  But we were both too drunk and ended up just falling asleep…”   Realizing that didn’t sound any better he dragged his hand down his face, groaning before starting over.  “Please don’t tell anyone Parvati?” he pleaded softly. “This is still… new, and… I-I think I like the boss like you like Junlei.”
Parvati’s expression softened at this and she looked thoughtful.  “Well, I suppose it’s about time,” she murmured, shaking her head wryly.
“What’s that supposed to mean?”  Felix asked, frowning.
“Nothin, just the way you two were always lookin at each other when you thought no one else was watching… well, I guess I shoulda realized you liked the captain like that.”  After a moment she nodded as if coming to a decision. “Don’t worry Felix, I won’t say anything to the others about this.  Though I reckon they’ll figure it out soon enough.”
Felix managed a sheepish grin.  “Thanks for understanding Parvati, I appreciate it.  Now, if you excuse me I gotta get some water and caffenoids for the boss.  They woke up with a helluva hangover.”
“Aww, that’s real sweet of you, Felix.  I’ll let you get back to taking care of the captain.”  Patting his arm, Parvati smiled warmly before turning, heading back toward the cargo bay.
Felix stared after her for a moment before releasing the deep breath he hadn't realized he'd been holding and climbed to the kitchen, hoping not to run into anyone else on the way, his thoughts quickly slipping back to the warmth of Tibbs’ bunk and looking forward to their next date.

The Long Haul: Chapter 1 (Felix Millstone x The Captain)
Tumblr media
Also available to read on ArchiveOfOurOwn.
It was supposed to be a fairly simple job. The Unreliable needed a replacement part, and Nyoka had heard rumors that a ship had crashed in the wild on Monarch some years ago, a ship similar enough to the Unreliable that its parts should be compatible. We’d found it all right, Felix and Nyoka and I, and while she and I held off the mantisaurs, he had pulled the part that Parvati needed. Unfortunately, we’d managed to step on the toes of a large group of local marauders on our way back, which led to our hasty retreat to the Unreliable.
“Fixed it, Captain!” Parvati’s voice rang from deep in the ship and I keyed in our skip destination quickly, ignoring ADA’s warnings, as much as I knew we shouldn’t. The ship shook with the impact of a grenade launcher.
“All right, everyone hold on!” I clutched the arms of the captain’s seat in the Unreliable as the engines roared to life, wincing at the sound of bullets pattering against my ship’s sides. The ship rose, quivering at the beating it was taking, and then we were blasting towards the edge of Monarch’s atmosphere. I was about to skip the ship when Parvati’s voice rang through the halls.
“Captain, something’s wrong!” The smell of smoke reached my nostrils before I got to the engine room and found Parvati with Felix standing helplessly behind her, Parvati's gloved fingers moving a mile a minute over the recently-repaired engine. “I swear I put it in right, I-” she broke off, reaching a hand back. “Felix?”
He handed her the wrench he was holding and she went to work again. I knew there was nothing I could do to help and I’d only distract her by asking, so I waited, heart pounding, ready to grab the fire extinguisher hooked to the wall if need be. “Almost… got… it,” she muttered, switching the screwdriver with a wrench to crank something tighter. The smoke stopped suddenly, and she sat back on her heels, pushing her goggles back up to rest on her forehead. “I think that should do for now,” she said, her shoulders slumping with relief.
“What happened?” I asked.
“Law, I have no idea,” she said. “Everything was working just fine and then next thing I knew the engine was overheating. I-I’m sorry, boss. I must have done something wrong.”
“It’s all right, Parvati,” I said. “You got it taken care of. You had to install it fast, too, so I don’t blame you one bit.”
“Thank you, Captain,” she said. “I thought I knew how to do it but maybe I don’t know as much as I thought. If we could go to the Groundbreaker, well, I’m sure Junlei could help us.”
“You sure you only want to go there for her help with the ship?” I teased, and she blushed furiously.
“Captain!” she exclaimed, “We really could use her help!”
“I know,” I said, “I’m just teasing you. Think we can make it there?”
She looked back at the repair and nodded slowly. “I can’t promise it, but I’m pretty sure.”
“A 'pretty sure' from you is good enough for me,” I said. “Let’s go. Anything else you need to do before we skip?”
“No, ma’am,” she said.
“All right, then. Good work, Parvati.” I turned to return to the cockpit, Nyoka next to me. “Where’d Felix get off to?” I asked. I hadn’t noticed him leave the engine room, and didn’t see him on my way to the cockpit.
She shrugged. “Probably went to find some food. You know how he is.”
“Yeah,” I said. Still, I was a little surprised he hadn’t stuck around to see the problem through to its end. That wasn’t like him. True to Parvati’s word, we skipped successfully to the Groundbreaker, and I went upstairs to find Felix to ask if he wanted to come with us onto the ship. I knew Junlei and Parvati were likely to be working for some time, and Felix would be disappointed if Nyoka and I left without him. His bedroom door was closed and I knocked twice.
“Come in!”
I pushed open the door and stepped inside. He was sitting at his desk, cleaning the grenade launcher that he always used with such gusto. He looked up briefly, barely meeting my eyes with a smile that felt forced before his gaze returned to his task. “You disappeared earlier,” I said. “Everything okay?”
“Oh, yeah of course,” he said. “It just didn’t seem like there was much for me to do there. You know how I can be when it comes to that kind of stuff. More harm than good, right?”
“Maybe,” I said. His demeanor was off. He seemed nervous, and Felix wasn’t supposed to be nervous around me. It didn’t feel right, and I didn’t like it. “So everything’s ok?”
“Yep,” he said.
There was no point pestering him; I had learned Felix’s MO - if something was wrong, he’d bring it to me eventually and nothing I could do would get it out of him before then. “All right, I trust you,” I said. “You’d tell me if it wasn’t. You trying to come onto the Groundbreaker while Junlei helps Parvati with the ship, or do you want to stay here?”
“I’ll come, if you don’t mind,” he said, reaching for a rag to wipe his dirtied fingers on.
“I wouldn’t have asked if I minded. C’mon, let’s go.”
“All right, Boss.” He seemed lost in thought as we descended the ramps to the base level of the ship. He was probably just tired from the mission, coming down from the stress of it all. That made sense.
Nyoka joined us as we left the ship, and we crossed the landing pad, moving into the heart of the Groundbreaker. “Anyone looking for anything in particular?” I asked.
“I was thinking of getting a drink,” Nyoka said. “Anyone care to join?”
“At 11 AM? I think I’m good,” I said, and Felix laughed. He seemed a little more himself now, and I liked that.
“Suit yourself,” Nyoka said. “I’ll see you back on the ship.”
“What about you, Felix?” I asked as we continued down the thoroughfare.
He shrugged. “Nothing in particular. Just thought I’d tag along.”
“All right then,” I said. “I’m trying to find some deals on ammo. Wanna scare Belle into cutting me a discount?”
He looked at me incredulously. “I don’t know about that, Boss.”
“Oh right, ‘cause she’d be the one doing the scaring, wouldn’t she?”
He frowned, his lower lip jutting out in a pout that somehow tightened my chest. “That’s not fair,” he whined. “She sells weapons for a reason.” Even though it was fake, I hated seeing him upset. Of course, I felt that way about the rest of the crew too, but lately, I’d felt a little extra protective over Felix and I hadn't had the time to put my finger on why.
“I’m just kidding,” I said, nudging him with my elbow. “Cheer up.”
“Felix, is that you?” A female voice interrupted our conversation, and both Felix and I looked over to see a woman jogging toward us. She was tall, nearly as tall as Felix, dark red hair tucked into a loose braid that swung gracefully as she moved. A heavily modded revolver hung off her belt, and well-muscled arms emerged from her armor. Her face was pretty, dark gray eyes set under a strong brow, a dusting of freckles across her tan cheeks.
“Alaina?” Felix asked incredulously, opening his arms to embrace the woman as she reached him.
My stomach tightened slightly, a sour feeling in the back of my throat. Oh. That was why I had been paying a little extra attention to Felix lately.
Oh no.
I couldn’t let myself get distracted like this. Not when there was so much to get done. My romantic history was messy to say the least, and the last thing I wanted was to risk fouling up my friendship with Felix by letting my feelings get involved.
She had stepped back, and I realized she was holding out a hand for me to shake. “I’m Alaina,” she said.
I cleared my throat, shaking her hand firmly. “Rose Cornett. Pleasure to meet you.”
“I’ve heard of you,” she said. “Never thought I’d find Felix on your crew, though.”
“Why’s that?” I asked.
“Oh, you know. He’s a troublemaker. Didn’t think he’d be much for a crew like yours.”
“Shut up, Alaina,” Felix protested. “I’m not like that anymore.”
She raised an eyebrow skeptically. “You don’t seem very different to me.”
"Well, I am," he said obstinately. "I've got plenty of stories."
“Well, tell me 'em over the lunch you're about to buy me,” Alaina said.
“Yeah, sure,” Felix said. “Wanna come, Captain?”
“Already ate.” The lie slipped off my tongue automatically. “Be back at the Unreliable in an hour. We’re out of here as soon as Parvati’s done.”
“Oh. Okay.” His face had grown more serious and I knew he had noticed the tone change I had failed to disguise. “See you then.”
“Yup.” I walked on towards Belle’s, silently cursing myself. Of course I had feelings for Felix. The stupidest thing about it was that I hadn’t realized it earlier. I was close with everyone on my crew, but now that I thought about it, I didn’t find myself admiring Nyoka’s smiles. I didn’t laugh as much with Parvati. I didn’t feel as much myself with ADA. Of course I liked him. He was kind, and brave, and loyal, and smart? Well, maybe not so much that. But Law, he was easy on the eyes. The thoughts crashed over me like a tsunami and again I cursed my own ignorance. Had it been so long since I’d had feelings for someone? Well, not counting the decades I spent on ice. How stupid could I be? I did my business with Belle quickly and then returned to the ship, holing up in my room and trying not to think of Felix’s date, or whatever it was, and how tightly he had embraced Alaina. I sat back, resting my feet on my desk and willing Parvati and Junlei to hurry up. The sooner we were out of here, the better.

At the End of the Day
Felix Millstone x Fem! Reader
Warnings: Smut.
Word Count: 2.3k
“I’ll always do everything I can to make it back to you guys...to make it back to you.”
Tumblr media
“Come on, ADA. Tell me a joke!” Felix persuaded the automated computer inside the navigation room.
“I am only authorized to take orders from the captain.” She repeated for the third time in her usual monotone robot voice.
Nyoka, Parvati, Ellie, and Felix had been left on the ship while the captain was out with Vicar Max and SAM. Felix hated being left behind on the ship. There never seemed to be enough to do. Sometimes he’d “redecorate” the kitchen upstairs to occupy his time or maybe even attempt to get Parvati to let him explain the complicated rules of tossball. Unfortunately, everyone left on The Unreliable were busy doing their own activities and chores. This left Felix to his own devices in terms of entertainment.
The captain had been gone for a couple of days, which wasn’t all that unusual, but the crew tended to worry the longer she was gone. There was no guarantee that she and whoever she took with her would make it back to The Unreliable. He was more than a little concerned now, but he was doing everything he could to not panic. He tried not to be so protective over her. She was a tough woman and independent as hell. But he couldn’t help it. He cared about her too much not to be worried.
So this is how he ended up trying to convince ADA to speak to him for the last ten minutes. He had overheard the captain ask ADA to play music or tell her something funny, so he decided to give it a whirl. He had to hand it to the late Alex Hawthorne...he programmed one stubborn assistant.
“I don’t think she’d mind if you told me just one joke. Please?” He begged.
After bantering back and forth for a few more beats, ADA responded;
“Okay, Felix. Transmitting a joke,” Felix tensed up with excitement, eager to hear what she’d say; “I used to hate math but then I realized decimals have a point.”
Felix’s brows furrowed. What kind of joke was that? Truth be told, Felix wasn’t always the brightest bulb in the box, but even Max (who tended to be the smartest) would have to think on her punchline for a moment or two. ADA needed some serious work on her stand-up comedy. Not wanting to hurt ADA’s feelings, Felix replied quickly;
“Oh...good one, ADA!” He complimented with a fake cheeriness to his voice.
Before she could detect his lie, the door to the ship opened and closed again, signaling the captain’s return.
“Welcome back, Captain.” ADA greeted.
A giddy feeling rushed through his body at the sound of three pairs of shuffling feet by the entrance. Felix rushed to the doorway of the navigation room to welcome them back. She was just taking her helmet off of her head, her hair shifting from being tucked inside. Her skin was glistening with the tiniest bit of sweat, giving her whole appearance a certain glow. Felix felt his heart skip a beat upon seeing her so stunning.
“Beautiful...” He said in a whisper under his breath.
She could really have him at her mercy. He was crazy about her. He almost felt like crying upon seeing her returned with perfectly good health.
“Good work, SAM and Max. You guys are good for the night.” She praised, dismissing them of any more duty.
“Thank you, customer!” SAM recited as he walked away behind Max to go clean whatever he felt like cleaning.
She finally looked in Felix’s direction, flashing him an award winning smile. He felt his body get warm as she approached him.
“Felix,” She began with a warning but amused tone; “Were you harassing ADA again?”
She stood in front of the navigation terminal, ready to get the hell off of Scylla. She hated Scylla. Between the primals, the raptidons, and mauraders, it was not an enjoyable place. She decided to have the ship be en route to Stellar Bay’s landing pad so that she’d be there by morning.
“I’m a comedy fan! I just wanted her to say something funny...which she sort of did.” He explained.
She laughed at his antics. For the longest time, Felix was a little spooked by ADA. He didn’t like the idea of the entire ship being controlled by a computer that could do whatever it wanted. Now he never seemed to want to leave ADA alone. The captain exited the room to the lockers just outside, putting away her gear. Felix followed suit and he leaned one arm on the lockers. His dark eyes refused to look away from her, fearing that she’d disappear if he did.
“How were things here? We ended up being gone for longer than I had originally planned.” She spoke.
He was really relieved she was back. He wanted nothing more than to scoop her up and hold her until he was fully sure she wasn’t going anywhere. She had yet to sense his worry melting off with each passing second. She was still winding down from a busy last couple of days herself.
“Ah, you know. It was the usual. A little boring, but productive.” He claimed.
She nodded with understanding. She knew how monotonous and bland the ship could get. Cabin fever was ten times worse on a spaceship if they didn’t get out enough. This is why she tried to let everyone tag along with her an even amount, much to Felix’s disappointment. He wanted to go every time she stepped foot off the ship. He believed that he should get extra outside time since he was her boyfriend. As a captain, however, she had to be fair to her crew. So Felix had his days of staying on the ship like everybody else. No matter how much he protested it.
“Good,” She said closing the locker in front of her; “You weren’t too worried that your favorite captain was gone for so long, were you?”
While she was purely joking, not really thinking he was concerned, he took her question will full seriousness. Honestly, he was about to have a breakdown if she hadn’t returned when she did.
“Let’s just say I’m glad you’re back, boss.” He said leaning to kiss her.
She ducked his lips and laughed sheepishly;
“I wouldn’t do that. I’m sweaty and...kind of gross.” She admitted.
He scoffed and rolled his eyes. He had seen and touched way worse. He persisted and kissed her deeply. This was odd. She could feel how desperate he felt. She was beginning to notice something was up.
She went about her nightly routine. She checked the engine room, made sure the rest of the crew was squared away, and tended to any housekeeping things. The entire time she was doing these things, Felix followed like a lost puppy. If she took two steps, he took two steps. If she turned to the left, he turned to the left. He didn’t dare be away from her for longer than a few minutes. If he kept his sights on her, then he was assured that she was safe.
It had been a long day and the days before it were even longer. She needed a decent night of sleep and just maybe a day off. She had never desired her bunk and a few moments of peace more in her life. By the looks of it, she’d be having an overnight guest. Not that she minded. It was a win-win to snuggle up with her favorite guy and perhaps get caught up on the latest tossball scores. However, based on the way Felix was acting, she was sure he had something else on his mind.
He was just a step behind her as they trudged up the stairs to the captain’s quarters. His hand was interlaced with hers, something that he didn’t do very often.
“The bed is going to feel so good,” She stated as the door to her room hissed open; “I’ve never been so happy to see it.”
Felix laughed genuinely;
“I know what you mean. You’ve gotta be exhausted.”
She let go of his hand to sit on the mattress to unlace her boots and toss them aside. Oh. That simply wouldn’t do. Felix practically ran to the bed himself and sat next to her, the sides of their legs touching. She paused, looking at his nonchalant expression. She raised a brow, because something was seriously up.
“What?” He asked as if he hadn’t been on her tail for the last hour.
“You care to tell me what’s going on?” She asked, leaning forward to rest her forearms on her knees.
Felix thought of denying anything. He didn’t want to admit he had been afraid. But he also didn’t want to lie to her. That wasn’t fair.
“Boss, I’m gonna be honest. I was real scared while you were gone,” He confessed; “I know sometimes things don’t go as planned, but the longer you were away the more freaked out I got.”
She was a little stunned at this revelation. She didn’t realize how much Felix dreaded her being away and him not being there too. She stayed quiet and listened as he went on;
“A million things were running through my head. What if primals took the three of you down or what if a group of mauraders snuck up on you?” He asked with a shaky voice; “If something happened to you out there and no one was left to come back...I’d never know what happened.”
Her heart ached at his words. She didn’t want him to concern himself with this. She took this job...or at least she was given this job because she was more than capable. She could handle yourself. Felix did have one valid point. Anything could happen at anytime.
“Felix, I had no idea you felt that way. If something were to happen, you would know. You don’t have to worry about me.” She said carefully taking his hand into hers.
His calloused fingers stroked her hand, he shook his head;
“Can’t help it. You mean so much to me. I have to worry.”
He could feel the growing pressure in his throat as he felt tears beginning to make their way to his eyes. He didn’t want to cry and make her feel guilty that he felt this way. It wasn’t her fault. He blinked his eyes rapidly to force the hot tears from spilling down his cheeks.
“Listen to me. Don’t think for a second that I don’t do everything in my power to make it back safely when things get dangerous,” She encouraged sweetly; “I’ll always do everything I can to make it back to you guys...to make it back to you.”
While Felix was beginning to feel comforted by what she was saying, there was still that tug in his chest that kept him feeling worrisome. He couldn’t wait any longer. He kissed her abruptly, the quiver in his lips a testament to his desperation. His hands cupped the sides of her neck to keep her close to him, her lips soft on his. She fell into his frame, knowing how much he needed to feel her physical form.
It wasn’t long after that she was on her back, Felix’s lips were hot on her neck as he left the most tantalizing kisses. He was going much slower than usual. He wanted to take his time with her and really marvel over her. The pressuring ache between her legs was growing rapidly, but she didn’t say anything just yet. she knew he needed this glacier pace.
She did, however, go ahead and unzip his pants to somewhat get things moving. He did the same, throwing her pants on the floor with her boots. His hand lingered around her heated sex, his finger wrapping around and pulling her underwear down.
“Felix...” She breathed out, her patience running thin.
She rested one hand on his right shoulder, her other hand being pinned above her head. His voice was like silk in her ear;
“I know,” He almost whispered; “I got you.”
He finally pushed into her entrance, the most satisfied moan drawing from her lips. She felt her walls take him in as he filled her in the most delicious way. He pulled himself out so sensually, just to push back in again. Every time he felt so good. It was hard not to scream for him to go faster. His head was in the crook of her neck, still leaving a trail of kisses.
“I’m right here,” She said in her most angelic voice; “I’m not going anywhere.”
His thrusts sped up at her words, a whimper escaping from his chest. He adjusted himself so he’d hit her sensitive spot each time he went back in. He was so grateful that she was here. Safe with him. He returned to a more normal pace, her end approaching quickly as he continued to slam into her.
“Oh Law,” She moaned out, hr legs instinctively wrapping around his waist.
He knew that was a signal for her high coming up, he thrusted even harder, his own self twitching. Her vision went white for a second as she rode out her climax, Felix’s own finish coming as well. His movements slowed and he collapsed on top of her half naked body. Their breathings were fast and deep as they recovered. She let a hand drag through his hair, stoking his soft tufts of darkness. His head rested on her chest as he listened to her heartbeat, another confirmation that she as fine.
“Felix,” She said after a few moments; “You’re okay. I’m okay.”
He nodded, kissing her once again.
“Yeah,” He said finally feeling the first sense of real relief; “I know.”
That’s when he knew that things were okay now. She as there in the flesh, alive and well.
That’s all he could ever want.

Summary: Max has made too many mistakes and now it's time to pay up. He thinks the punishment is a little harsh, but he doesn't have a clue quite yet just how much it's truly going to cost.
---
The Day 26 prompts were “School of Magic” for @augustwritingchallenge and “depth” and “setting: ghost/medium AU” for @writersmonth, so I decided to write one scene for each prompt set in a new AU that combines them into one story. So here’s two chapters of a school for ghosts AU where Max and Lore are once more set to butt heads and maybe eventually fall in love, anyway.
Brownie points if you can guess the references.

For the 3-sentence challenge: Rhea/Felix, yawn
Rhea couldn’t stop the huge yawn that came out of her.
“You gotta sleep boss,” Felix tried to sound serious but he couldn’t help but smile as he watched her fight to keep her eyes open.
“One more episode,” she smiled sleepily as she cuddled deeper into his arms.

Accidentally wrote a 5k Felix/Captain fic. This is why I can’t have nice things. Have a lil excerpt because who knows if I’ll ever be finished
_
Zara wandered over to him, taking in his messy dark hair and creased t-shirt. “Did you sleep OK?”
“Hmm? Oh!” Felix straightened up suddenly, almost catching his head on the open fridge door. Helpfully, his near miss made him spot a fresh bottle of Mock-Apple Juice. “Slept like a dream, boss. Can’t believe I got my own cabin!” He started glugging the juice straight from the bottle and Zara did everything she could not to pull a face.
“There are cups over there.” She said, pointing past him to the shelf.
He stopped drinking to breathe. “What did you say? And can I have this? Sorry, shoulda asked.”
Maybe she should have chastised him, or at least frowned a little, but she found herself smiling again. There was something about him that was incredibly charming and he seemed totally oblivious to it. “It’s yours – but just this once.” She took a sip of her Trip-Teaz. “And you might want to use a cup next time. Just so we keep germ spreading to a minimum.”
“Oh, yeah. Course. No worries.”
She took another sip of tea, sneakily studying him as he belatedly poured the juice into a chipped mug. Out of everyone so far, he fascinated her the most. Not because he had a mysterious secret past (Max had that dubious honour) but because of his attitude. She had never met someone who hated so much while being so optimistic and enthusiastic. Zara couldn’t imagine how hard his life had been on the Groundbreaker, scraping by on whatever he could find.
Her life couldn’t have been more different – she had lived in the lap of luxury on Earth, studying law and working a high-flying corporate job alongside her wealthy family. But Felix had no one to look out for him, no one to check in on him, no one to fall back on.
As if he was reading her mind, he said, “We didn’t much care for cups and stuff on the Groundbreaker. Not in the Back Bays, at least. Whatever you found, it was yours, and you drank it as quick as you could.”
She smiled. “Well, you found the juice. So I guess it’s yours.”
He glugged from the cup, draining it in two swallows. He filled it back up to the brim immediately. “Thanks, boss.”
“No problem. Tomorrow, we can work on portion control.” She tapped him gently on the back and was surprised at how warm he was through his t-shirt. She took her hand away quickly and clutched her cup tighter. “Anyway, you’d better get ready. I want you and Ellie to come to Roseway with me today.”

Recovery (Phineas Welles/Captain) (1)
MAJOR BYZANTIUM SPOILERS
I really think the Captain would have a really hard time coming to terms with the discovery of the ERP. Also, the name for my character is Captain Data Yar. I am no longer embarrassed by it *jazz hands*
---------------------------------------
“ADA, have you heard from the Captain?”
“No, I have not Felix.” The soft voice of the ship’s computer responded.
“Still? It’s not like her to be out this long without contact.” Vicar Max responded with a concerned hum, glancing up from his book. It was no secret their captain had been going out as of late, troubled by a horrific secret they had learned. Captain Yar had been quiet, as usual, but since that night she had been going out to drink heavily in Stellar Bay. Even Nyota was concerned, which was telling for the resident alcoholic.
“Surely we outta go check on her?” Parvati spoke up, wringing her hands a bit. The small ragtag crew had just finished up dinner, the turn in the conversation stopping everyone from dispersing.
“That’s not a half-bad idea.” Ellie nodded, Nyoka draining her bottle.
“I think she should talk to someone who understands.” Four heads turned to look at the hunter, surprised by the advice.
“What, no telling her to drink more?” Felix asked, sounding more relieved than teasing. Max reached over and slapped Felix upside the head, earning some faint chuckles.
“You mean that Doctor Welles fella?” Parvati asked, giving the hunter a strange look. “I don’t rightly know if he would be the right fella to ask, such with all this runnin’ around we’ve still got to do.”
“Why not? They talk whenever we aren’t running around, he probably knows more about her than we do.”
“Hey, Captain Yar has told us plenty,” Felix crossed his arms, his expression firm before softening. “Then again…”
“It can’t hurt to at least ask.” Max set his book down, glancing up. “ADA, would you send Phineas Welles a message?”
“I have already done so.” ADA’s almost smug tone made everyone roll their eyes. “Oh, it seems there is a reply.”
“Well, don’t done keep us in suspense.” Parvati frowned.
“He is asking why you worry about the Captain, and if you can visit his lab.” ADA replied after a moment. “Shall I tell him the Captain may not be exactly sober?”
“Yes, tell him everything.” Max nodded, getting to his feet. “Come on, let’s go bring the Captain home.” Felix jumped up to his feet, Parvati quick to follow as Ellie sauntered behind with Nyoka. The trip to the Yacht Club was a short one from the landing pad, the group quickly spotting their Captain. Captain Yar was holed up in a far corner, purple hair frazzled and hanging over her eyes. Her ponytail had come undone, gloved hands constantly running over a pale face. Violet eyes, hazy from copious amounts of alcohol, kept staring up at the ceiling as if searching for something.
“Hey there Cap’n.” Nyoka greeted, taking a seat across from the other. It took the other a second to register the hunter, a frown crossing her face. “There ya go, still sober enough to recognize me.”
“Go a-away.” The Captain sounded tired, hands trembling on the bottle of Spectrum Red in their grasp.
“I’m afraid we can’t.” Felix sat beside his captain, placing a gentle hand on the bottle. “Come on, you need to come back to the Unreliable.”
“Why?” The question came out like acid.
“Someone wants to see you.” Vicar Max knelt down on the captain’s other side, gaining her full attention. Felix was able to slowly pull the bottle free, Yar glancing down with a slight shake of her head. Max had become a quick confidant of their captain, taking her lax hand into his.
“We’ll get you all settled back at the ship, we promise.” Parvati smiled nervously, having gone to get some water. “We want to help you.”
“What’s the point?” The captain sighed angrily, wobbling a little as Ellie and Max got her standing. “Those people..”
“We know.” The Captain sagged against Max and Felix on the walk out of the bar, stomach churning from all the alcohol. Maybe that last Spectrum Red hadn’t been such a good idea…
ADA said nothing when Yar entered the ship, only to vomit heavily in the entrance before blacking out. Luckily Felix stopped her from falling face-first into her mess, Ellie wincing as she helped drag their leader out and to her quarters.
“I hope Phineas has plenty of Caffenoid.” Ellie frowned, wincing when the Captain’s head smacked against her pillow.
“Sorry!” Felix bit his lip, having not meant to deposit his captain so hard onto the bed.
“Just help me get her on her side, we wouldn’t want Cap drowning in her vomit.” Ellie rolled her eyes, the two getting Yar settled up sideways. There was a faint lurch as the Unreliable took flight, undoubtedly making its way towards Phineas’ secret lab. It was a bit of a journey, having to make sure not to be tailed. The Board was getting desperate, Captain Yar getting closer and closer to cracking their plan and stopping the collapse of this colony. It was strange really, how this stranger was standing up and taking charge. No one had gone against the Board before, and despite that, she forged ahead. The crew all followed in hopes to help save their home, knowing Yar was going to be the one to save them all.
“Now arriving at Phineas’ top secret...oh! Vicar Max, it seems we have a guest waiting.”
“Pardon?” The vicar moved to the cockpit, glancing at the available security footage. Phineas Welles, usually only behind his thick glass sanctum, was waiting for them. He appeared to be holding a tray piled high with various bottles and treats, looking skittish as he waited at the door.
“Shall I admit Phineas inside?” ADA asked, sounding curious.
“Yes, of course.” The vicar nodded, moving to greet the scientist. Phineas slowly entered the ship, rightly cautious as he took in the clergyman. “Greetings Doctor Welles.”
“You must be the vicar I’ve heard about,” Phineas replied bluntly, closing the door behind him. “I have a feeling we have much to discuss.”
“Indeed we do.” The other frowned, wordlessly leading Phineas to the captain’s quarters. “She has been resting, so I’m not sure if you’ll get much.”
“I am not surprised I...read the report.” The tray Phineas held creaked slightly as he tightened his grip. “Believe me when I say the Board will pay, the fucking swine.” Max nodded, still working through his own anger. He and Felix had accompanied the Captain in Byzantium, both horrified at what the ELR plan had truly been. Felix had refused to talk about it, and Max had buried himself in his books to try and cope.
“She could use a friend.” Phineas stopped short, setting his tray down on the massive desk in the room.
“What did you say?”
“Don’t play the fool Welles.” Max frowned. “You are most likely her friend, and she needs you right now. If you need anything, ADA will help you.” Phineas didn’t have time to say anything before the other man left, the doors closing with a clack. The sleeping captain shifted in her sleep, Phineas sighing as he gave her a look.
His friend needed help, and he was going to be sure to give it.

The Long Haul: Chapter 3 (Felix Millstone x The Captain)
Chapter 1 Chapter 2
Tumblr media
My vision faded back in, the colors around me nearly blinding me as I struggled to focus. “Captain!” Parvati’s voice sounded muffled, but her second cry of, “Captain, wake up!” was much sharper, and I shook my head a little, trying to rid myself of the haze that clouded my thoughts. My fingers brushed my gun, and as they clutched it, reality rushed into focus. Parvati was facing down three angry Primals, and Felix… he lay among the scattered corpses of the creatures and my heart clenched, adrenaline rushing through my veins. I stepped forward, planting my feet, and began to fire, barely feeling the kick of the shotgun in my hands. Between the two of us, we felled the remaining primals in just a minute, which felt like an eternity with the thought of Felix limp on the grass quickly overwhelming all the thoughts in my aching head. As soon as the last beast fell, I ran back to him, dropping to my knees in the grass.
He was breathing, thank God, but his breaths were slow and shallow, a long gash torn through his armor and into his side. The moment I peeled back the material, my fingers were covered in blood, and I could scarcely see the injury itself beneath the mess. “Fuck, this is bad,” I muttered. I was fighting the rising panic as hard as I could, but I felt so helpless, it was nearly impossible to rein it in. I took a deep breath, forcing myself to calm down and form a plan. “Parvati, help me get him up. We need to get back to the ship as fast as we can.”
“Got it.”
I slid an arm under Felix’s upper back, sitting him up part way, cringing at the rush of new blood flowing over his clothes, and Parvati grabbed him from the other side. Together we hauled him upright, and began to jog toward the road, his feet dragging and bouncing behind him. His dead weight was awkward and unwieldy, but I hardly noticed the burning in my muscles as we made for the ship as quickly as we could. I glanced at him, and he hadn’t seemed to have stirred at all. His face was deathly pale, his head lolling limply as we ran.
We hadn’t been far from the ship when the attack happened, but it felt like an agonizingly long time to get back. As soon as the door opened, I was shouting for Nyoka, my voice coming out ragged and panicked. Nyoka had to know what to do. She had been a hunter long enough to know how to deal with a goring.
Her feet pounded down the steps as we set Felix down inside the door. She dropped next to him, already reaching for her knife to cut away the cloth around the wound. “What happened?” she asked tersely, fingers moving adeptly around the gash.
“Primal,” I said.
“Get us to town,” she said. “We need a doctor.”
I nodded, grateful for his welfare to be taken out of my hands for just a moment. It was too precious for me to protect, too big a responsibility.
I ran to the cockpit, pressing buttons with still-bloodied fingers. The ship rose, and I closed my eyes for a moment, the headache I had been ignoring forcing itself to my attention with its throbbing intensity, so strong it made stars pop behind my closed eyelids. Then I had to take over for the automatic takeoff, and I was piloting us toward Edgewater. My landing was rough in its speed, but I got us there. “How’s he doing?” I asked Nyoka as I helped her lift him to get him out of the ship.
“Hanging in,” she said. “He lost a lot of blood. It’s not looking too good.”
I didn’t have an answer for her words, still trying to force my calmness as Parvati flitted ahead of us to open the door.
When we reached the small doctor’s office and Felix was literally and figuratively out of my hands, I finally felt tears begin to prickle at the backs of my eyes, and I looked away from what was left of my crew, blinking rapidly until I could control myself again. I felt Nyoka’s arm wrap around my shoulders, and she gave my arm a reassuring squeeze. “He’s tough, Rose. If anyone can make it through this, he can.”
I nodded, and straightened my shoulders a little, trying to pull myself together. I was supposed to be the captain and I had damn well better start acting like it. “Parvati, what happened exactly?”
“Well, after you cracked your head, the Primals attacked. We were doing all right at first, and Felix especially was protecting you real well. But there were a lot of them, and I lost a little ground, but Felix just stood right over you and kept fighting them, well, until one got past him, and it slashed him real bad. He kept shooting, but then he went down. He passed out right before you started waking up.”
I nodded slowly. My stress and concern for Felix were overwhelming, but the idea of Felix protecting me like that made me feel warm inside. He had protected me before all else, putting my life before his. Without a question, I’d rather I die than him, but his sacrifice for me meant more than I could ever hope to express. We’d all risked our lives for each other before, but this was different - he had let himself go down before he let me go. The thought made my chest tighten and my eyes grow wet again. “Thank you for holding them off, Parvati,” I said, and my voice wavered a little, but she didn’t show any reaction to it, just giving me a small, encouraging smile. She knew me well enough to know when I didn’t want my emotions acknowledged. “If it weren’t for you, we’d all be dead.”
“It’s just the same as you would do for us,” she said. “Now, why don’t we get something for your head? It must be hurting something fierce.”
***** The medication the doctor’s assistant procured for me made my thoughts a little fuzzy and my mind a tad drowsy, but those side effects helped keep me calmer as we waited for the doctor to finish with Felix. I leaned my head back against the wall in the waiting room, letting the coolness from the stone sink into my skin. It had been over an hour now. My fingers picked idly at a loose thread on my pants.
At the sound of footsteps, I sat up straighter, and the doctor emerged from the room he had taken Felix into, a bloodied apron over his lab coat. I stood, hands clenching automatically at my sides. “Well?” I asked.
“He’s in rough shape,” the doctor said. “We almost lost him several times. But I expect him to make it through.”
The tension I hadn’t fully realized I was holding released suddenly, my shoulders slumping and my jaw loosening.
“So what happens now?” Nyoka asked.
“Now, he rests. Here, if you can afford it,” the doctor said.
“Staying here is what’s best for him?” I asked.
“Yes; it’s better not to move him.”
“Whatever it costs, I’ll pay you,” I said. “Can I see him?”
“He won’t be much company; he’s anesthetized on top of being knocked out. But feel free,” the doctor said.
“Thank you.” I passed him, entering the short hall and opening the door to Felix’s room.
He was on the bed, tucked beneath covers, his face under the oxygen mask nearly as pale as the white blanket. He looked nearly dead, but as I watched, I could see the gentle rise and fall of his chest as he breathed. I grabbed the chair from the corner of the room and pulled it closer to the bed as Nyoka and Parvati entered the room behind me.
“He’s a lucky bastard,” Nyoka said. She stood over the bed for a moment, looking down at his peacefully sleeping face. “Knowing him, he’ll be back on his feet in no time.”
I chuckled. “The hardest part will be keeping him in bed long enough to get better.”
“He’s not out of the woods yet.” The doctor’s voice joined our conversation as he stepped into the room. “There are still things that could go wrong - infection, for one. We’ll keep a close eye on him and hope for the best.”
“Thank you, Doctor.” Outside, the sun was beginning to set, the warm orange light casting a more lively glow across Felix’s face. I sat down in the chair I had pulled up and looked up at Nyoka and Parvati. “You two should get some dinner. I’m going to stay here tonight, but there’s no reason you shouldn’t sleep in your own beds.”
“We’ll bring you food!” Parvati offered, but I shook my head.
“I don’t have any appetite. But that’s sweet of you.”
“All right, Captain,” Nyoka said. “Let us know if anything happens.” “Will do.”
Soon after they left, the rays of the evening sun grew near-blinding, and I crossed the room to close the shutters. Then I sat on the edge of Felix’s bed, gazing at his calm face. I reached up, cupping his cheek in my hand, my thumb stroking the soft skin next to his nose. In his sleep, his head turned just slightly into my touch, and I sat there, not wanting to move, for several long minutes.
The anxiety in the pit of my stomach had settled a bit. I wouldn’t be able to fully relax until Felix had recovered. But at least I knew I wouldn’t lose him yet.

@writersmonth Day 30 and the prompt I decided to use was “tree”. Of course I had to circle back to Max’s lime trees in the beekeeper AU. He’s a little desperate, and she is not above a little blackmail. I’m having a lot of fun basically writing my own Hallmark Channel movie and I am not sorry.
