What is going on with Angel’s gender. He’s long-haired, slim, soft-featured and as I saw some good meta point out, he’s a parallel to Makima in many places. He’s a canonically cisgender man as part of a joke on Denji’s unbridled heterosexuality. He’s a feminine androgynous character in appearance and voice. He’s drawn mostly-naked in that one cover specifically to mark him as cisgender. He’s the most male of male archetypes in having a dead girlfriend that he seeks revenge for. He replaces Himeno, the most androgynous female character, as Aki’s partner.

#the simple answer he’s an Angel so he has the gender of an Angel. #which is male because we are European Christians and we can’t imagine that a being of power and judgment could be a silly woman #but also feminine because we are cloistered monks and when we think of the most beautiful thing in the world it’s the imaginary woman #so Angel is male because he has to be powerful and female because he has to be easy on the eyes #idk I wish we knew more about his old girlfriend and their relationship #his relationship with Aki I wouldn’t really put down because on the surface it does seem just like a friendship that fans read into #but the constant triangulation of Aki and Angel around Makima and Aki’s canonical feelings for Makima complicate things. #feels less like a bros before hoes situation and more like Aki wavering between two redheads (via daisyachain)
