An opinion [...]: I don't think it's that controversial a take, but I think Fire Emblem really needs to grow out of relying on inane plots and bare-boned tropes and thinking it's good enough. FE has created layered, intriguing political stories with three-dimensional characters a few times now. Do that again, and again, and more. It's already a game about medieval politics and war. Make it character-driven. Make it rich in its socio-political backdrop. Make it thoughtful. Yea, I lowkey detest Fire Emblem Engage and Fire Emblem Fates.

the sword and the stone

a.k.a. i felt like rambling about some small headcanons regarding dragonson roy and the sword of seals as continued from this small plot ramble ages ago.

so like i mentioned in the previous link: in this version of events Roy classes up twice - once in Arcadia into a minor Dracolord when he’s able to consolidate his dragon heritage into a small, small dragonstone that he’s able to use to enhance his attacks; and once into a Great Lord when he receives the Sword of Seals and makes it his own by changing it into the Wyrmbound/Dracobound blade. 

i’ve seen headcanons and speculations about the Sword of Seals rejecting Roy because of his dragon blood, and that’s painful and delicious and also a very valid fear for Roy to have if he ever did know his ancestry. it’s a headcanon that i love. but also I can’t help but think about how the sword seemed to be sentient and changed according to its wielder’s desires - it changed when Hartmut wanted to spare the Dark Dragon and not kill it, and since it showed Roy those very same memories it makes me think it wouldn’t reject Roy for such a reason, especially when Roy expresses the wish for dragons and humans to live together in peace the way they do in Arcadia, and such. 

that being said, Roy and crew do receive a scare when he gets the sword and Roy feels the desire to smash his own dragonstone with it, like the sword is asking Roy to do such a thing. they all wonder if it is rejecting him, but Roy can feel a gentle warmth from the sword and not the burning, harsh sensation that the other Divine Weapons gave when he touched them, so he does it. the sword absorbs the shattered remnants of his stone when he does that, which means now that the sword can act as a channeler for his dragon blood the same way the stone does, but with its own power in the mix responding to Roy’s wishes (to be able to prove himself as a worthy leader of this group even with his heritage, to stop Zephiel’s maddened desires from destroying the world even after his death, to bring everything to a peaceful end) Roy’s able to accentuate his dragon powers with it and that’s why his ranged attack suddenly involves him turning into a dragon as opposed to just throwing fire with his sword.

but it has another side effect too. now there’s always going to be a part of Roy and his memories inside that sword, much like how Hartmut’s memories were sealed inside as well. it contains his will, and instead of it being like...a familiy heirloom when he dies, or it being sent back to Bern to be locked up in the temple again, Roy’s will requests it to be sent...to Arcadia. to give it to the (potentially still recovering) Idunn. 

because dragons have long lives, and they heal slowly, especially from deep scars like this. 

because in that sword lies the wills of the three men that one way or another saved Idunn from her many years of darkness. 

Hartmut, who saved her by putting her to sleep rather than kill her.

Zephiel, who saved her by waking her from that dark slumber and gave her a purpose to live for.

And Roy, who saved her by freeing her from that purpose and giving her a chance to simply live. 

because Idunn is a symbol of what humanity drove dragons to do to their own kind in desperation.

because the sword of seals was once a symbol of what humans did to drive themselves and dragons apart.

because the sword of seals now imbibes the will of three men who, in their own ways, all tried to do the best for the world they lived in. 

and giving it to idunn to safekeep, for her to use, seems like the best way to represent those dark parts of history that should never be forgotten, and the future that still has a chance to walk forward into the light.

“LAGUZ” PROJECT EXPLANATION:

So I’ve been wanting to do something like this for a while, but I’ve been thinking how fun it would be to try to illustrate the Fire Emblem characters who aren’t shapeshifters as some kind of a shapeshifter! So to be honest I’m using the term “laguz” here very loosely since I’ll also be doing non-Tellius characters - laguz is just the easiest / most convenient term. I would actually like to maybe eventually do all the characters from FE6, FE7, FE8, FE9, FE10, FE13, and FE14, but I have no idea if that’s actually going to be possible considering there’s TONS of characters in the franchise and that might be too over-ambitious (and I also might not include bosses / NPCs - I think that’ll just be determined per character). But honestly I thought this would be a fun way to practice my anatomical skills and maybe even push me a little outside my comfort zone! So I think this will be fun. Again, it’s something I’ve wanted to do for some time now haha.

(Should note - I fully intend to post spoilers. So you should block “fe# spoilers” if you don’t want to see them for a specific game, substituting the # for the game’s number. I.e “fe10 spoilers” would block out all Radiant Dawn spoilers basically. Make sense?)

Although I might scale back the quality from this one. I got kind of carried away here with shading and everything just because I really struggle with perfectionism, so some of these might also just end up being colored sketches or something instead of fully-shaded images. Otherwise this project might be too difficult to undertake aha! This also probably isn’t going to be a priority to me to be honest as I have a lot of other things I really need to do. (So like. It may literally be a month or more before I do another one. Don’t expect me to pump these out super fast. I’m very slow.) I just had some inspiration for this though and wanted to get it out before that fizzled away, so...

IMAGE DESCRIPTION:

Here’s Chrom! I’m starting with FE13 / Awakening because I’ve been watching a LP of it lately (I own the game and I’ve beaten it before, but my 3DS currently isn’t working which is frustrating to me because I really want to replay Awakening rip), so it’s been on my mind! I hope to tackle characters in order of the wiki’s list for the game (so that means Robin’s up next, then Lissa, etc.). For some reason I honestly think Chrom would work well as a wolf shapeshifter / laguz given his personality.

He’s kind of bold and fearless but also kind of a dork with a big heart and he can also be really just... reckless and frankly kind of a moron when it comes to his own safety or the logical decision but. He thinks with his heart, basically. I personally really like Chrom and find him endearing haha. He works really well for his role in Awakening’s plotline even if he’s not the brightest, because the whole “invisible ties” theme (tl;dr THE POWER OF FRANDSHIP let’s be real) in the game is a pretty important part of it / focal point of the story.

What do you guys think? I’d love to hear anyone’s opinions if you have a different suggestion for what might fit him best animal/theme-wise (although I’m not going to redraw anything - I just think it’d be fun to hear other people’s takes/interpretations of the character too!). Also if anyone has any suggestions for any other characters / what you think I should do feel free to chime in with that too! :D Enjoy and I hope you all are having a fabulous day~!
