As always, us mods here at FeudalConnection want to give a huge thank you to everyone who participated in the Second Quarter 2022 Inuyasha Fandom Awards!! Your participation and support for this fandom is simply incredible! Please note, all voters must provide a valid email address; nonexistent emails cannot be accepted or included in the final tally. We implemented this measure to preserve the integrity of the voting form following a series of voting anomalies, and we thank you for your cooperation.

As a reminder, the winners have evolved into First, Second, and Third place awards. We are allowing ties for first place winners, rather than go into a run off period!

To Serve and Protect

Summary: Detective Higurashi finds herself in a pinch during a raid, finding help in the unlikeliest of places.

Triggers/Warnings: Reference to gun wounds and hospitals

A continuation of this drabble/Tumblr prompt.

“Give me your gun.”

“Fuck no.”

Taisho’s eyes narrowed. “We do not have time for your bravado, detective. We need to move to the offensive, and you are in no condition to do so.”

Kagome opened her mouth to retort, but a twist in the wrong direction reminded her why she was on the ground in the first place. A stray bullet had caught her right shoulder, leaving her incapable of raising her gun, let alone firing it.

And Naraku’s flunkies were closing in.

She still didn’t trust Taisho but had to give him some credit for not up and leaving her once she’d hit the ground. He’d actually covered her long enough for the two of them to find some cover.

Before demanding she hand over her only means of defence.

“I remind you that had I been so inclined, I could have already relieved you of your weapon.”

“You don’t have to act so smug about it.”

“It is not arrogance, it is fact. Give me your weapon so that we may increase the likelihood of getting out of here alive.”

She looked around the small alcove she was currently hiding in. It covered her on three sides, but she was completely exposed on the front. If Taisho stayed here and they got past him—

Even as the thought crossed Kagome’s mind, he was pressing himself against the nearest wall, golden eyes scanning. His silver-blonde hair had been braided and tucked into his hoodie, giving their adversaries fewer ways to catch him unawares.

Up until that night, she’d always seen him in a suit. And not various combinations; each encounter had him in the complete ensemble, tie and jacket included. When he’d shown up in the dark hoodie and jeans, she hadn’t recognized him. It wasn’t until he’d approached her and actually spoken that Kagome had realized who he was.

He’d looked human.

She’d also been dismayed to realize that his suit wasn’t being used to give him the guise of a respectable physique. The hoodie and jeans proved he was just as toned as the suit made him out to be.

Blue met amber, Taisho’s hand outstretched between them. Kagome gritted her teeth but handed over her gun, feeling exposed without it. Her heart calmed a little as he quickly inspected it.

At least he knows how to use it properly.

“Stay here.”

Kagome rolled her eyes. “Where else would I go?”

“The snark is unnecessary.”

She would’ve flipped him off if she’d been able to raise her arm.

Watching as he moved silently away from her, Kagome was reminded of how little she knew about him. She still hadn’t figured out how a business executive, who’d been raised with a silver spoon in his mouth, had become an informant on the biggest crime boss in the city.

The banshees who wrote the gossip columns loved to wag their tongues about his private life, pairing him with a different person every week—and they weren’t always female. When the chief had first put her on this case, she’d groaned at the thought of having to babysit a spoiled brat who was more concerned with his image than anything else.

How quickly he’d proven her wrong.

Even his apartment was a contradiction. Sure, it was still a penthouse suite with a fantastic view, but there had never been any indication of anyone aside from himself living there. And he’d never acted spoiled at all. Pompous. Arrogant. But never spoiled. He was very aware of how much money he had and was never above sharing the wealth with those who deserved it.

The fact that he still had all his limbs was surprising.

“Don’t die,” she blurted.

The corner tilted up into a smirk. “Always so selfless, detective.”

Kagome shifted her weight, wincing as she felt blood drip between her fingers. “I figure that even if you don’t come back for me, if you live, you’ll be able to tell our backup where to find me.”

Taisho glanced at her over his shoulder. “I would not leave you here.”

“I’ll hold you to that.”

A slight nod was his only response before slipping into the shadows. Kagome strained to distinguish between the grunts and curses of the men that had been chasing them, wondering which of them were caused by bullets from her own gun.

Her hiding spot gave her a good view of anyone who would try and get the drop on her, but she was still vulnerable without a weapon. Folding her legs, she tried to conceal herself better—even a few inches could be the difference between life and death.

She’d meant what she’d said before; she didn’t want Taisho to die. He didn’t deserve to have his life cut short by a slug like Naraku. Hopefully her stoic ally would be able to take out enough people to escape.

Her eyes fluttered shut as she leaned back, the dampness of her shirt concealed by the dark shade of the fabric.

She probably should’ve told him about the second bullet wound.

She could hear her name. It was quiet but desperate.

Far away.

She needed to answer, but Kagome couldn’t open her eyes. She was so tired, and everything hurt.

The voice became demanding, pleading, and she leaned towards it, but all she found was darkness.

Why was it so crucial for her to wake up? Sleeping felt like a much better idea.

The voice fell away.

She’d find it later.

Time passed slowly. Or not at all. Something brushed the edge of her consciousness, gripping her fingers, pulling her out of the darkness.

No.

The darkness was more comfortable. The light brought pain and a buzzing—a beeping—sounded in her ears.

Dark lashes fluttered, and Kagome slowly opened her eyes, squinting at the bright lights and pale walls. The beeping was annoyingly constant, and she tried to pull away from it but found she couldn’t move.

Brows furrowing, she tried to sit up, groaning softly at the weight of her limbs.

“Took you long enough.”

Another voice. Not the same one as before. Her eyes closed, but she forced them open again.

“How’re you feeling? Other than a giant pile of shit?”

Kagura.

Chief, her brain reminded her.

“Where am I?”

Kagura’s face came into view, the concerned features blurred around the edges. “Tokyo General. You went and got yourself shot. Twice.”

Shot? Right, she’d been ambushed. There’d been more men than she’d anticipated.

“I should write you up for insubordination. And forgetting your throwdown weapon. And for giving your service weapon to a civilian.”

Civilian? Why would she have—

Blue eyes widened, the lines of the room suddenly becoming clear. “Taisho! Is he—”

A soft hand was placed on her chest, Kagura holding her down. “He’s fine. A few bumps and bruises, but certainly not as bad as you.”

Air whooshed out of Kagome’s lungs, relief coursing through her.

“He’s going to be pissed that you woke up when he’s not here, but oh well.”

Sucking in some of the air she’d lost, Kagome managed to turn her head, wincing as the muscles in her shoulder twinged. She was in a room by herself, various machines monitoring different parts of her body. Two tubes were attached to her arm, one clear, the other filled with blood.

How much had she lost?

The chief’s words finally registered, and she frowned. “Why would he be upset?”

Kagura’s lips thinned into a line, void of their usual crimson pallor. “You’ll have to ask him that. Apparently, he made quite the fuss when the rest of the team showed up.”

Kagome’s mouth mimicked Kagura’s as she struggled to stay conscious, fatigue clawing at her mind.

“Did we get him?”

The hand on her chest moved to her head, forcing her eyes to close. “We got him. Rest. You have nowhere to be right now.”

Unable to even nod, Kagome simply let the darkness take her again, the need for sleep drowning out all the questions rolling around in her mind.

When she woke again, the walls were the same, but the lights had shifted. The ones above her had been turned off, the coloured blinking of the machines reflecting off the white walls. The sun had set, no light filtering in through the blinds.

Her head felt significantly less fuzzy, but her body was still heavy, each movement a strain as she tried to sit up. And then a hand slid under her neck, adjusting her as the bed whirred, tilting her up into a sitting position.

Blue met gold when she opened her eyes, and Kagome gasped at the myriad of emotions tumbling across Taisho’s face. Time slowed again, though exceedingly less fuzzy this time, and when it finally returned to normal, he was sitting in a chair next to her bed, features pinched into a scowl.

“What time is it?”

“Late. Past midnight.” His voice was gruff, strained, and it was then that Kagome noticed the dark circles under his eyes. She tried to remember a time when he’d been anything less than pristine but came up empty.

“The chief said—”

“You lied.”

“What? When?”

“You said it was not serious.”

Oh.

Shit.

“I didn’t think it was. I’ve been shot in the arm before—”

“But not in the back.”

Kagome’s mouth snapped shut and she looked away, unable to meet his gaze. “No, I’ve never been shot in the back before.”

“So you lied.”

“I didn’t lie on purpose. I’d actually forgotten about it until you left, and by then—”

“You almost died.” The last word was hostile, startling Kagome into looking at him again.

Taisho’s face was blank, but his hands gripped the arms of his chair, his knuckles white. She suddenly realized he was still in the same clothes he’d been wearing when they’d been attacked. Something in Kagome’s chest fluttered that had nothing to do with the surgery she’d been through.

“I’m okay.”

His expression turned hollow. “You are not.”

“I am! It’ll probably take a little time to recover, but—”

Taisho grabbed her hand, his fingers biting into her palm. His chair hit the floor, the sound going unnoticed as she tried to make sense of the myriad of emotions passing over his face. The man was always in control, to the point of Kagome making a game out of getting under his skin, but this was different. There was something untamed in his features, and her heart constricted.

He’d been genuinely worried about her safety. About her.

Placing her other hand over his, she gave him a reassuring squeeze. “I’m going to be okay.”

Breath came out in a shudder before his knees hit the floor, long silver hair creating a curtain around his face as he pressed his forehead to her hands.

They stayed like that for a while, Kagome not daring to move, the only sound the steady beeping from the machines monitoring her status. When her energy began to wane, Taisho finally shifted, golden eyes peeking at her through a curtain of silver.

She offered him a soft smile.

“You should rest.”

“I am resting.”

A scowl pinched his features, and Kagome managed to laugh. Her hand was still in his, and she laced her fingers through his. Something the chief had said tugged at the back of her mind, stopping her from giving in to the exhaustion.

“What happened—” she asked, blinking slowly. “The chief said you were upset when the backup arrived.”

If she hadn’t been watching him so closely, she would’ve missed the slight darkening of his cheeks.

“I may have—” he paused, finally sitting up, “—overreacted.”

“Overreacted? You threatened to tear the head off anyone who tried to get near her.”

The pair jerked, Kagura smirking from the doorway.

“I did not—”

“You pointed Kagome’s gun in the medic’s face.”

His blush returned, and Kagura’s smirk widened before she turned to Kagome. “I’ve talked to your mom. Once you’re released, you’ll be going—”

“She will be coming home with me.”

“What?” Both women gave him an incredulous look.

Taisho’s determined gaze slid from their still connected hands up to Kagome’s surprised face. “You have spoken before about your mother running your family shrine. She will not be able to provide the care needed for your recovery.”

Her mouth opened and closed several times before she found the right words. “I don’t need a babysitter.”

“Actually, I agree with Taisho on this one.”

Kagome couldn’t muster more than a groan. “I followed protocol!”

“Minus all those things I told you I was going to write you up for.”

Fatigue and fury swirled in the detective’s eyes, and Kagura put her hands up, laughing. “Alright, alright, I give. Don’t shoot me.”

“You are not amusing.”

Kagura winked at Taisho. “You’d be surprised.”

His lips thinned, but he turned to Kagome, his hand fingers tightening around hers. She opened her mouth to argue again, but the look in his eyes stilled her tongue.

“Please.” He’d righted his chair after Kagura had interrupted their conversation, now sitting in his original position but just as close to her as before. “Come home with me.”

The inflection of his voice, his whisper, made Kagome’s cheeks burn. He held her hand and her gaze, and Kagome, unable to look away, slowly nodded.

“I’ll let your mom know then.”

Biting her lip, Kagome nodded again, hypnotized by the softening of Taisho’s—Sesshoumaru’s—features. The flutter of his name against the inside of her mind. And her heart.

“You don’t get to leave until the doctors sign the release papers, Kagome,” Kagura reminded them. “Same goes for you, Taisho. None of this ‘using money to influence the professionals’ thing.”

“If you insist.”

“I do. You’re in enough trouble as it is.” Kagura cast one last look at Kagome, the woman having finally torn her gaze away from the man in front of her. “I’ll expect a full report once you’re settled.”

“Yes, ma’am.”

The door closed behind her, and Kagome shut her eyes, her head beginning to spin. Sesshoumaru went to stand, but her hand clenched around his, not letting him leave.

“You require rest.”

“I meant what I said. I don’t need a babysitter.”

“Your chief seems to think otherwise.”

Kagome snorted, then winced as pain shot up between her shoulders. “The chief is in league with my mother and is overprotective of anyone in her section.”

“A commendable woman then.”

“Tai—Sesshoumaru, you don’t need to do this. You’re not responsible for my—”

“You are inclined to your interpretation of events. I am inclined to mine.”

Kagome sighed, her eyes settling on his hunched form. “You—”

“Kagome.”

A shiver that had nothing to do with her current condition ran up her spine, and Kagome was glad he’d never called her by her first name before then.

“I will do everything in my power to ensure your speedy recovery. Whether you agree to it or not.”

There it was.

A tired smile tugged at her lips. “It’ll probably be a long recovery.”

“Unsurprising.”

“And I’m going to have a lot of demands.”

“I am prepared.”

“You’ll have to be really thorough with your treatment.”

Pale eyebrows raised in surprise before he brought the back of her hand to his lips, golden eyes gleaming. “Only the best for you.”

Kagome hummed softly, dark lashes fluttering closed as she finally gave in to her body’s demands for rest.

She could’ve sworn she felt something brush across her forehead before she fell asleep.

It’s the start of the 2nd Quarter 2022 Inuyasha Fandom Awards!!

We hope everyone has had a wonderful beginning of the Spring season! A huge shout-out to everyone who participated last quarter and made it such a huge success! We look forward to all of the amazing new fanfiction and fanart to be nominated and shared with this beautiful community!

Before we get started, there have been some major developments during our brief hiatus.

We want to give a shout-out to @britonell for always being so generous with her time and talent with creating award banners. (If you have not received your award banner for last quarter, please reach out to one of the mods asap!)

There are also some changes coming to the categories that may effect you as nominators:

- Since Best Traditional Art had such fantastic participation, it will stay as a permanent category moving forward. We can’t wait to see all of those traditional pieces nominated!

- Our Roulette category for fanfiction this quarter will be Best Collaboration! This is defined as: A piece of fiction that has been authored by two or more people. Please verify that those listed as collaborators are indeed authors of this piece, as some works have multiple people listed due to gift-giving or art commissions. Please include this verification in your nomination (ie: simply state that you verified that these contributors all had a hand in creating the piece)

We also have a major announcement! Since our 3 year anniversary (yes, three years) is coming up, we decided to give our Discord a major overall! So major, in fact, that its an entirely new server!

What can you find on this new server?

- Links to every single quarter during FeudalConnection’s lifespan. That includes all the nominees and past winners listed in one area for easy finding. Looking for something new to read or inspiration for some art? Feel free to head over and peruse past nominees!

- Channels dedicated to every single event hosted by the fandom! Not sure what events are being held each year, or if an event from last year will be hosted this year? You can easily ask about it, look at posts about it, or talk about the event itself, perhaps gathering new inspiration for it. The mod-team will do our best to make sure these events are kept up-to-date with the most recent information!

- A place to simply be creative! There are several channels set up for artists and writers alike to share WIPs, references, ideas, head canons, and even search for a beta! Since FeudalConnection was created in order to show appreciation for all of our artists and writers, we wanted to give them a space to simply let loose and allow the creative juices to flow!

- There are also several channels in which you can recommend fanfictions or share some art for appreciation, talk about your favorite ships, promote your own work, and even vent about every day irritations.

This Discord will be open to everyone! The Inuyasha fandom has always been a wonderful community, and we want to continue that fashion by bringing together all of our creative minds and those who appreciate them. So feel free to join at your leisure! The fandom will be happy to have you!

What is The Feudal Connection?

The Feudal Connection is a place where amazing fanart and fanfiction in the Inuyasha fandom is recognized, admired, and offered the chance to be nominated for an award! In addition, it also gives lesser known authors and artists an opportunity to have their work shared to a broader extent and receive the admiration and recognition they deserve!

How do you determine which fanfictions and fanarts are nominated?

The Feudal Connection is fueled by nominations submitted by the Inuyasha community. Once someone sends in a nomination, the moderators review the nomination to verify that it complies with the rules in place. None of the pieces nominated are by “suggestions”. They are specific pieces of work nominated by members of the community.

How do I nominate?

You can send us a submission in one of our nomination formats. Your submission will not be posted and therefore remain anonymous, only to be seen by the moderators. You can send multiple nominations in one submission, as long as the nomination formats are used for each nomination. Please select your fiction nominations carefully; spelling and grammar are important parts of being an author. Anything deemed unacceptable by the moderator team will be disqualified. Once nominations are complete, we’ll post the list of accepted nominations so you can read and view them before voting.

Can I nominate my own art/fiction?

You cannot nominate yourself. Doing so will result in the nomination not being accepted and a warning from the award moderators.

How long do I have to nominate?

You will have 2 weeks from the start of the nominating quarter to send in nominations. These dates will be posted at the beginning of each quarter.

Can I nominate anonymously?

No. This is due to the fact that no one is allowed to nominate their own work. Also, if a nomination is disqualified, the moderators will be reaching out to the person who nominated to allow them another opportunity to nominate.

Can I promote my own works of fiction/art to be nominated for a quarter?

No. You are not allowed to self-promote your own work during the nomination period. This includes not being allowed to request others to nominate your work in specific categories. However, you are allowed to promote the nomination period of the awards by stating something similar to “go nominate your favorites” or the like, as long as you don’t promote your own work to being nominated. Violation of this rule will result in a warning. If there is a second offense, your work will be banned from being nominated in any future quarters.

How many fanfics/fanarts can I nominate?

Only one fiction or artwork can be chosen for each category per person. Meaning, a story or artwork can only be nominated by one person per category. Therefore, any secondary nominations will be disregarded and the duplicate nominator will be allowed to submit another story or artwork in its place.

Is there a limit to how many works can be nominated per category?

Yes. Only 10 fictions or artwork can be nominated per category. Once that category has reached its nomination limit, no more nominations will be accepted into that category for the current quarter.

What fanfiction/fanart is eligible to be nominated?

What is the nominating format for fanfics? For fanart?

Can I nominate a fanfic/fanart for more than one category?

Yes. The same story or artwork may be nominated by the same person in up to two different categories.

What are the categories?

The categories for both fanart and fanfiction can be found in the Categories link.

Can I nominate a fanart/fanfic that includes Original Characters or Crossover Characters?

Yes. For Fanfics, 80% of the story needs to be focused on Inuyasha characters and the development of the story. OC’s can be in a story, but the main focus needs to be on the Inuyasha characters. Artwork can contain Non-IY characters where specified, but NO art may contain only OC’s or Non-IY characters. (i.e. Artwork of Inuyasha and Kagome’s “OC children” are unacceptable without other genuine IY characters present in the piece)

How do I nominate a piece that has multiple authors or creators?

If multiple people are listed as the author or creators, please verify who created the piece, as some may simply be listed because it was a gift to that person; and please include this verification in your nomination (ie: simply state that you verified that these contributors all had a hand in creating the piece).

If it is a true collaborations between multiple people, they all would go in as one creator. This means that each person would be listed as the creator and the nomination would count toward each creator’s nomination limit.

For example, if a creator was nominated for a collaboration and two other separate works, only the collaboration and one of the other works would be accepted for that creator, depending on which nominations came in first.

I don’t want my fanart/fanfic nominated. Can I opt out? How?

Once a nomination has been approved by the moderators, the author/artist will be made aware of the nomination. Every author/artist retains the right to have their work be removed from the nomination list and can opt out of future nominations.

If you do allow your fanart to be nominated, you are also allowing the moderators to save your work in order to use it strictly during the voting period of the quarter. Once the quarter is completed, the artwork is then removed from the moderators’ personal use.

How many quarters are there?

There will be 4 quarters total per year. Each quarter will be broken down by dates prior to the quarter starting.

How long is each quarter?

Each quarter will be approximately 8 weeks.

How long is the voting period?

The voting period will last for 2 weeks.

How do I vote?

Once the voting period begins, the moderators will post a link to the voting form that will list all of the nominations and which categories they have been nominated for. You can click on the link to be taken to the voting poll, however, you must sign in as you will be allowed only one vote per category.

When are the winners announced?

At the end of each quarter.

What happens if my fanfic/fanart wins? Do I need to do anything?

Please send one of the moderators or the FeudalConnection ask box your preferred email address so that we may send you your award(s) as soon as possible. Afterward, just kick back, relax, and enjoy the feeling of being recognized for your hard work!

I want to nominate an artist/author who has won in the past. Are they still eligible to be nominated?

There is a Winner Ban in place. Once any piece of artwork or fanfiction has won a First Place award for a category, it automatically becomes ineligible and cannot be nominated again for that category. However, it can be nominated for other categories after three consecutive quarters have passed (ie: one year since that piece won) as long as it fits within that definition. We currently do not have a rule against nominating an author/artist back into the category they won for in the past, as long as it is a different piece of work that is being nominated.

The Winner Ban does not apply to works that have won Second or Third place in any category.

Rules of Eligibility

Fiction and Fanart published on any public or free site can be submitted for an award provided they meet all of the requirements of the nominations. These sites include but are not limited to Tumblr, Fanfiction.net, AO3, Deviantart, ect. If the validity of a site is uncertain, reach out to a moderator.

Multi-chapter fics must have been updated within the past 3 years of the nomination quarter. Fanart must have been created within the past 3 years of the nomination quarter. One-shots and drabbles must have been posted within the past 3 years of the nomination quarter.

If the work was posted onto several different locations, the earliest date and time stamp will be taken and checked against the quarter’s period of eligibility. Stamps posted within reviews can be used to date a work and/or its chapters. Also, authors and artists can be contacted to verify timeframes.

You cannot nominate yourself. Doing so will result in the nomination not being accepted and a warning from the award moderators.

You are only allowed to nominate one fic/fanart per category.

Each piece of Art or Fanfiction is allowed to be nominated into a maximum of two different categories per quarter. The nominations will be taken on a first come first serve basis, meaning that once a piece of Art or Fanfiction is nominated into two categories, it will not be allowed to be nominated into other categories, and each subsequent nomination will be rejected.

Each author/artist is allowed to be nominated twice per quarter. Meaning, an author/artist can only have a max of two of their creations be nominated per quarter. So be sure and pick your favorites carefully!

The work must be in compliance with the definition of the category into which it was nominated.

Both adult and non-adult artwork are acceptable for nominations; however, any adult artwork showing explicit sexual nature will only be allowed to be nominated into the NSFW categories.

Pieces of artwork or fanfiction that depicts an underage character romantically involved with an older adult, as well as any incestual relationships, will not be accepted as a nomination.

Fanfiction Categories

Best Action Fiction

Action: “actual engagement in fighting an enemy; military or naval combat” Adventure: “participation in exciting undertakings or enterprises.”

Does it make you sit on the edge of your seat? Do the characters battle adversity on a daily basis? Have the characters embarked on an epic quest?

Best Alternate Universe/Reality Fiction

Anything that walks outside Takahashi’s vision. Anything that moves the characters outside of Takahashi’s setting of Feudal Era Japan or Modern day Japan is AU/AR. Anything that changes the main characters beyond the basic core attributes Takahashi granted them. Anything that includes a separate world and series of events.

Best Canon Fiction

“The works of an author that have been accepted as authentic.”

If the story is set in Takahashi’s universe (Modern Japan or Feudal Japan) and keeps the character origins, events, and motivations for character development that she created, then it is canon.

Best Canon Divergence Fiction

Anything that walks outside of Takahashi’s original vision, but includes some key defining moments from the original canon universe. Anything that starts in the World created by Takahashi and is taken to a different outcome.

Best Angst Fiction

“Any situation or series of events having/giving a feeling of dread, anxiety, or anguish. An acute but nonspecific sense of anxiety or remorse.”

Stories that delve into the lives of the characters and pit them against odds that create angst.

Best Dark Fiction

Anything that brings the reader into a world of pain and suffering through abuse of the characters at the hands of the antagonist or internal strife. If it includes graphic rape, murder, abuse (mental or emotional), a character that is suicidal or possessed of depressing thoughts/outlook on life that colors the majority of the story in glum tones it can be considered a dark!fic.
