Ab iss hamle se "MASTERMIND" toh tension se purey pasina se bheeg chuke they, uppar se A.C. toh chal raha tha par usmein bhi pasine ruk nahi raha tha "MASTERMIND" ka, toh "Muraad" ne unko relax karne ko kaha aur khidkiya khol di . Ab  pehli goli jo "Muraad" ko lagi , woh "Ayesha" ki rifle se chali thi, par galti se "Muraad" ko goli lag jaati hai. Saamne building mein "Ayesha" full focus lagaye usi khidki ke taraf ekk takk dekh rahi thi. Ab "Muraad" ne haav dekha na taav aur woh "MASTERMIND" pe goli chalane wala tha , usi waqt uska call baja aur dusri taraf se usko puri jaankari di gayi baaki do logo ke baare mein, yeh sunn uska josh aur badh gaya ab woh maar hi dalta "MASTERMID" ko , ki dusri taraf "Zeenat" ne "Qureshi" ko intimacy ke dauraan injection ke zariye uske sharir mein zeher inject kar diya , jisse uski sang sang maut ho gayi , aur isne wohi usey ek goodbye kiss dekar "Qureshi" ka chapter fully close kar diya. Dusri taraf "Ayesha' bilkul taiyaar thi , tabhi usne dekha ki "Muraad" ne usko dekhliya aur woh usse wahi shoot kar deti , par tab usne dekha ki "Muraad" usko kuch dikha raha tha , usne jab binoculars se dekha tab woh INDIAN ARMY ka badge tha aur woh samajh gayi ki woh INDIAN ARMY se tha , aur unn dono ka laskhya ek hi tha . Ab woh aaram se tamasha dekhne lagi. Aur issi beech "Zeenat" andar ghusi chali aayi aur aisa dhong karne lagi ki woh jaise dekhne aayi ho  goli ki awaaz sunkar ,ki "MASTERMIND" thik hai ki nhi kahi unhe koi haani toh nahi pahuchi ,tab "MASTERMIND" ne kaha ki unhe bachate bachate iss naujawaan "Muraad" ko goli lag gayi , warna aaj agat yeh na hota toh woh toh allah ko pyaare ho jaate. Yeh sunkar usko aur gussa badh gaya aur woh toh "Muraad" ko wahi maar dalti , par bahgwaan ka lakh shukar hai ki "Muraad" ko khabar mil gayi thi baaki dono ke baare mein , toh "Zeenat' ke haav bhav dekh kar usey pehle shaq tha fir confirm ho gaya ki ho na ho wohi woh dono mein se ek hogi  tab isi beech "Zeenat" ke pocket se ATS [cYBER CELL] ka id card gir gaya aur turant usey "Muraad" ne usey uthakar uthakar de diya isse pehle "MASTERMIND" usey dekh leta. Aur taaki "Zeenat" bhi jaan sake ki "Muraad" INDIAN ARMY se hai toh usne apne aapko usi jagah dobaar achot lagaya aur girne ka naatak kiya aur apna badge gira diya , jisko "Zeenat" ne dekh liya aur usko sab samajh aa gaya tha, aur first aid lene ke bahaane se "Muraad" ne usko khidki ke paaswale drawer se first aid box lane ko bheja , jaise woh phuchi usne "Ayesha" ko dekha rifle liye bilkul taiyaar , usko pura plan samajh aa gaya tha aur usne bhi "Muraad" ke hi tarah "Ayesha" ko apna id card dikha diya tha. Ab teeno ready the , teeno ne allah ko yaad kiya,aur countdown shuru ho gaya, niche toh sabko har team ke logo ne baaton mein uljha rakha tha , aur yeh log bhi guests ke tarah hi ghus aaye the mehfil mein . Uppar "Zeenat" ne jaise hi first aid karna shuru kiya tab woh samajh gaya tha ki "Zeenat" uske taraf attract ho rahi thi, aur usne isika mauka uthaya aur usle saath intimacy karni shuru kar di jispar "Zeenat" hairaan ho gayi aur "MASTERMIND" ko kuch samajh nahi aa raha tha ki kya kare, tabhi "Muraad" ne uske saath zabardasti karne ka jhuta naatak shuru kar diya aur woh samjh gyi thi ki yeh plan ka hissa tha , toh woh naatak asli lagey isliye woh "Muraad" se door jane ki koshish karne lagi par "Muraad" bhi kuvh kum toh tha nahi usne wapis aur zor se usey apni ore khichna shuru kiya,aur yeh dekh "MASTERMIND" ne "Zeenat" ko bachane ki koshish karne laga  aur bas yahi tha perfect moment aur khidki ke lagbhaag saamne hi khade the "MASTERMIND" ab isi khichatani mein bina waqt gawaye ayesha ne aim fix kiya aur fire kar diya aur rifle mein silencer fit rehne ke wajah se koi shor bhi nahi hua aur laga toh laga pura headshot , 1 second mein kahaani khatam. Ab yaha do baatein proof ho gayi ki "MASTERMIND" confusion mein marra aur inn logo ne usey uske ghar mein ghus kar uska kaam tamam kar dala. Terrorism ka "MASTERMIND" ab allah ko puri tarah pyaar ho chuka tha aur kisko kaano kaano kaan khabar bhi nahi hui . Ab yeh teeno apne teams ko lekar waha se aaram se nikal padi. Arthaat yeh mission pure teams ke effort ki success reult thi , aur iska shray ya credit all 3 heads aur unke pure teams ke joint effort ko jaata hai. Uss raat ke baad woh log Karachi emein kabhi fir dikhayi nahi diye aur koi unhe thik se janta bhi nahi tha isliye kisika shaq unpar gaya hi nahi, toh karachi ke logo ke liye "MASTERMIND" ki maut ej rahsya banke reh gayi. Fir agle din IB, ATS, INDIAN ARMY , heads apne apne teams ke saath INDIA wapis laut aayi aur congratulate kiya ek dusre ko , aur saath hi apne apne departments ke hero bann gaye. -x-

What did you like the most about Meghna Dubey while creating her?
Thank you so much for asking!!! Meghna is very close to my heart, so I loved this opportunity to gush about her, and to collect my thoughts as to what I want out of her character arc. Thank you!
Meghna Dubey was a character I built for a RP (which, for the uninitiated, is a form of writing where multiple writers collaborate to write a story, each only controlling their characters and influencing the story via the things done by their characters. There are a lot of these on tumblr. Thankfully mine was hosted somewhere else, and the format was much cleaner and now I have lost the focus of this post...) Anyway, let's get back to the matter at hand. Unlike my other RPs, I had this one fully planned, as in I knew where I wanted to take this story. So Meghna's character arc was more or less clear to me, and I built her according to what will happen in the story, and what ideas I wanted to explore with her character.
Let's side track once again and learn more about her story because it will explain my reasoning a bit, as to why I created her the way I did, and such.
THIS was supposed to be a retelling of an ITV classic, rich boy (son of a business tycoon and lives abroad) crossing paths with middle class girl (small town girl with a big heart and a nasty habit to meddle in other people's business), coming together to reunite star crossed lovers and falling hard and fast for each other, ending with the classic rich guy abandoning his girlfriend for the past X years.
Meghna is the ex girlfriend in this story.
You know, the one who is also super rich, lives abroad, comes from a business family (she might be very career-oriented, but that's a cute bonus, not a requirement to fit into the trope). She would be mean spirited and a snob and she will create a ruckus before and after the breakup, and will lose her mind and hire goons and plan murder.
Only, my Meghna is not the vamp of this story. She is a flawed human, who loves too deeply, suffers through the heartbreak and gathers herself together to wish for happy things for all of them.
This is her story.
Now that you know about the plot and where I wanted to take it (as of yet, it has been put on an indefinite hiatus), let me come around and answer your question.
What is my favourite thing about Meghna? Her passion for her work, her dedication to the business, and how, Meghna Dubey of Saroja Jewelleries is a separate entity from the Meghna who had fallen in love with Ankit (the guy, my writing partner's character). Meghna goes through a lot, and it is the family business that helps to keep her head above the water.
Was it really necessary to make her fall so deeply in love with the guy, especially when I knew they wouldn't be together? Yes. I wanted to explore the mindset of a girl who had planned her whole life with a person, and who does NOT turn into a psychopath in her grief, but comes out of it the same, positive person she had been, if only a little jaded and bearing the scars of her first love. She never really fully recovers from that, although she does get her happy ending with her husband (Ajitesh). Her first love remains in a corner of her heart, whereas Ajitesh occupies most of the place. I even made a graphic to explain this mindset, and although this isn't my most favourite thing about her, it ranks pretty high up there. Sharing the graphic just because -

Coming back to the importance of her career, I wanted to give her something, and no, not as a hobby. A full blown career, and I wrote in the conflict with her orthodox aunt as a side plot for her cousin, but let's just focus on Meghna.
The only child of business tycoon Ronit Dubey, and sole Heiress of Saroja Jewelleries, Meghna stood on solid ground. A lot of the hard work was already done for her, though I did emphasise on how she had been very involved in the business from early on, and how she keeps coming up with new designs at random points, because her work is always there in her head. It is a huge, HUGE part of who she is. She is MEGHNA DUBEY, and that never leaves her.
She has a legacy to uphold, a society to fight with.
And when Ankit’s absence leaves her broken and without a sense of self (because she did go all out in her life. Back when they were dating, she had moulded herself into the role of his girlfriend < and future wife > and had it not been for Saroja Jewelleries, we could have lost Meghna to the shadow of a woman whose life revolved around Ankit), this connection, this purpose, is what motivates her. This is what makes her realise that she was much more than Ankit’s Meghna, and she comes up like a phoenix rising from its ashes and becomes her own person. She blooms.
Which is funny, because life was simpler and happier before, but even before Ankit had stepped into her life, she had built her identity around her business, and it is this same habit that made her switch targets and orbit around Ankit.
And now, the Meghna that comes out of all this is a person, an individual, and in my opinion, that's the best thing.
The thing I loved most when creating Meghna Dubey?
Her journey.

Kahaan Hum Kahaan Tum ~ Episode 72: Of Coin Tosses and ‘Friendship’
This episode is hands down one of my top 5 episodes in this show. I absolutely loved every bit of it. Also I realised I prefer doing these type of mini summaries/liveblogs rather than a full on liveblog (it takes so much longer idk how @ishqsa and @tellywoodtrash do it for every episode. I applaud their efforts). But this turned out to be quite long coz again, got carried away with the feelzzz 
AAHHH THE AWKWARDNESS, man Rohit Sippy sucks at small talk #relatable 
The hand grab, when he thanks her for the night before <3 <3 
Girl’s resolve is breaking, ‘itna toh kar his sakti hoon tumhaare pyaar ke liye’ good coverup with the, I mean for you and Raima 
And we’re back at the ‘ache dost’ 
Trust Rohit to do a coin toss rather than to just say what he wants, and then lose the coin in the process 
Sonakshi hits him with the ‘it was nice dating you’ and forwards her hand to shake his, LOLLLL THIS LOOKS LIKE THE END OF A BUSINESS MEETING 
Also the use of Do Pal, very apt, hit the feelz

Proud of her for not stepping down when he hits her with his ‘you’re not family bs’ but also Rohan is an outright dick, I mean she cares more for your wife than you ever will, so basically more family than you

Din dhal jaate hai yaade nahi... It was one hell of a birthday after so long. Still can't believe I am 22 now. I had so many traveling plans for my birthday but couldn't go anywhere because of pandemic and was stuck at home and I am so glad for that. . Best birthday's are the one you spend with people who love you unconditionally. My Sister and Mumma did every possible thing to make me happy. The room is being decorated for the pooja. Jahnvi and Bua Maa are supervising.
Bua Maa: Jahnvi, teri pandit ji se baat hui?
Jahnvi: Haan, Bua Maa, woh time pe pohonch jaayenge, don’t worry.
Bua Maa: Alright, good good. Just make sure koi cheez missing na ho.
Jahnvi: Maine sab check kar liya hai. Sab bilkul waisa hai jaisa pandit ji ne bola tha.
Bua Maa: Ek baar phir ache se check karle. Aaj koi abshagun nahi hona chahiye, got it?
Jahnvi: Don’t worry, Bua Maa. Sab theek ... Oh! Inn arrangements ke chakkar mein main Omkara ko jagaana bhool hi gayi. Usko bhi to tayyar hone mein time lagega.
Bua Maa: Oho, Jahnvi! Tu yeh sab dekhle. I’ll go check on him.
Omkara’s room.
Bua Maa enters and sees Omkara lying on his bed.
Bua Maa: Omki, tu abhi tak so raha hai? Come on, get up! Pooja ki saari tayyariyan hogayi hain, chal abb tu bhi jaldi se tayyar hoja.
Omkara reluctantly gets up.
Omkara: Bua Maa, yeh pooja kyun?
Bua Maa: Iss ghar ke bachon ko pata nahi kis ki nazar lag gayi hai. Pehle Rudra, Shivaay, phir tu. Shivaay ne to iss pooja ke liye manaa kar diya, but I’ll make sure you and Rudra are a part of it.
Omkara: Kya zaroorat hai iss sab ki, Bua Maa? Abb to main theek hogaya hoon na?
Bua Maa: Yeah, yeah I know, tu inn sab cheezon ko nahi manta. But dekh Omki, meri khushiyan mere bete se judi hain. Iss hi liye main chahti hoon ke yeh saari balaaein, saari mushkilein tittar hojaein.
Omkara: Par Bua Maa...
Bua Maa: Do it for me, please?
Omkara (sighs): theek hai. Aapke liye.
Bua Maa: Thank you, puttar.
He gets up and goes to get ready.
Bua Maa (to herself): Tere problems har baar mere aur mere bete Ratan ke beech mein rukaawat laate rehte hain. Par abb bohot hua. Aaj ke baad tujhe mere Ratan ke raaste mein nahi aana chahiye, Omkara.
Main hall area.
Dadi, Tej and Jahnvi greet the pandit. Tej escorts him to the mandir, Dadi follows. Jahnvi is just about to head to the mandir when she hears Omkara’s footsteps behind her. She stops and turns to face him. Omkara walks down the stairs and comes up to her. She hugs him.
Jahnvi: Mera beta aaj kitna handsome lag raha hai!
She admires him.
Omkara (embarrassed): Mom...
Jahnvi: Pata hai Om, aaj itne dinon baad iss ghar mein tumhare kadmo ki awaz sunn ke main bohot khush hoon.
Rudra pops up from behind her and startles her.
Rudra: Haan, haan! Aapka favourite beta finally theek hogaya hai, abb mere kadmon ki awaz aapko kahan sunaayi degi.
Omkara: Shut up, Rudra.
Jahnvi: Main apne dono beton se bohot pyaar karti hoon. Priyanka ki shaadi ke baad abb mere paas tum dono hi to ho. You know, ek bete aur maa ka bond bohot special hota hai. Betiyan maa ke kandhe se kandha milaake chalti hain, par bete unki dhaal hote hain. Aur mere paas to 2 bete hain jo mujhse itna pyaar karte hain, I’m so lucky.
Omkara: Love you, mom.
Rudra: Main bhi!
Rudra hugs them both. Bua Maa is hiding around the corner listening to everything.
Bua Maa (to herself): Yeh pal jo tum apni maa ke saath ji rahe ho, yehi sab tumne mujhse cheen liya, Omkara. Abb tu hi mujhe mera Ratan waapis laake dega. Aur jab tak mera beta laut ke nahi aata, tab tak teri zindagi ka har faisla main loongi.
She calls someone on the phone.
Bua Maa (on the phone): Pooja shuru hone wali hai. Jaise hi khatam hogi, tum pohonch jaana.
She joins everyone else.
Bua Maa: Aw, how sweet! Kaheen nazar naa lag jaaye.
Rudra, Jahnvi and Omkara stop hugging.
Jahnvi: Bua Maa, pooja shuru karein?
Bua Maa: Haan, haan! Let’s go!
They all go to the mandir.
Mandir.
Pooja starts. Bua Maa, Jahnvi, Tej, Dadi watch both Omkara and Rudra take part in it. Everything goes well. Pooja ends.
Main hall, near the entrance.
Bua Maa and Omkara are sitting on the couch.
Bua Maa: Iss pooja ke saath tera bura waqt khatam, Omki. Main chahti hoon ke abb tu sab bhulaa ke zindagi ki ek nayi shuruwaat kare.
Omkara: Ji, bua maa.
Bua Maa: Ji bolne se kuch nahi hona, puttar. Aage badhne ke liye you’ll have to make more effort. Aur pehle kadam mein main teri madad karna chahti hoon. I have a present for you.
Bua Maa opens the entrance door. Gauri walks in to Oberoi Mansion, dabangg style (glasses on, wind in the hair). She goes towards Omkara with some documents in her hand. Omkara is shocked and angry.
Omkara: Tum yahan? I knew it. Tum Oberoi Mansion ko kabhi nahi chodogi na?
Gauri: Nandi banne ki koi zaroorat nahi hai, Omkaraji. Hum yahan rehne nahi, aap se talaaq mangne aaye hai. Aur hum koi apni marzi se nahi aaye. Bua Maa laayi hain humein, jail se baa-izzat bari karwaa ke.
Omkara: Bua Maa, yeh sab kya horaha hai?
Bua Maa: Puttar chahti to main bhi yehi thi ke yeh jail mein sadti rahe. Laikin tumhare future ke liye yeh divorce bohot zaroori hai. To teri azaadi ke badle maine isko azaad kiya. Main chahti hoon ke tujhe naya mauqa mile ek pati ke rishte ko nibhanay ka, apna pariwaar banaane ka.
Omkara: Par iss waqt meri zindagi mein pariwaar aur shaadi ki koi jagaa nahi hai. Aur shayad kabhi hogi bhi nahi.
Bua Maa: I understand this is hard for you.  Par Omki, tune mujhse vaada kiya tha. Ratan ki shaadi to main nahi dekh payi,to maine apne saare armaan tujhse bandhe hain. Kya tu mere liye itna bhi nahi kar sakta?
Omkara: Of course kar sakta hoon, Bua Maa. Laikin yeh meri zindagi ka ek bohot badaa faisla hai. Mujhe sochne ke liye kuch waqt chahiye.
Bua Maa: Omki main yeh nahi keh rahi ke aaj divorce papers pe sign karke kal hi shaadi kar le. But you need to understand that Gauri is now your past. To usko present mein rakhne ka kya faida? Apne kal ka boj uthaake agay badhna bohot mushkil hai.
Omkara: (pauses) I guess you’re right Bua Maa. Mujhe usko talaaq de deni chahiye. Laikin phir bhi, I need some time.
Bua Maa: Theek hai, puttar. But don't wait until it's too late.
Bua Maa gets a phone call and leaves.
Gauri: Bohot hi ajeeb chirautay ho aap, Omkara ji. Pehle to humein har baat pe jaane ko bolte the, aur abb jab hum khud aapse alag hona chahte hain, aapko sochne ka waqt chahiye?
Omkara: Aur tum? Khud iss ghar mein Chulbul bann ke ghussi, har baar rukkne ke liye koi na koi bahaana dhoonda, aur abb khud hi divorce maangne aagayi ho? Rudra tumhare baare mein sahi bolta hai. Kya sach hai kya jhoot, kuch samajh mein nahi aata.
Gauri: Omkara ji, agar sach ko dimagh se pehchaanne ki koshish karenge aur jhoot ko dil se, to sab kuch ulta hi lagega.
Omkara: Par tumhara sach to main jaanke hi rahoonga. Yeh divorce zaroor hoga, par tumhara poora plan expose hone ke baad.
Omkara takes off her glasses and looks her straight in the eyes with anger. Gauri tries to respond with a similarly tough look, but ends up staring at him longingly. Caught off guard, Omkara’s expression softens. Gauri suddenly looks away.
Gauri (trying to hide her sadness): Humara koi plan nahi hai. Hum bas aap ki tarha ek nayi shuruwaat chahte hain. Iss ghar mein humein izzat aur sammaan kabhi nahi milega, kyunki aap to iss shaadi ko maante hi nahi hain. Yeh rahe talaaq ke kagazaat, jab mann kare sign kar dijiye ga.
She hands him the papers.
Gauri: Hum jaa rahein hain. Namaste.
She takes a few steps towards the door, stops and turns to Omkara.
Gauri: Humara chashma?
Gauri spots the glasses in his hand, grabs them and starts to walk away, but something is holding her back, so she stops. It’s her glasses, which are stuck in a thread around Omkara’s wrist. The thread she had tied 3 months ago.

Life and times of Jaidev.

One of the greatest but unsung and unwept composers of yore was Jaidev. In 1933, 15 year old Jaidev Verma ran away from Ludhiana to Bombay, to become a film star. He acted in eight films as a child artist in Wadia Film Company. But owing to his father's blindness, he had to return to Ludhiana. While he was acting in films in Bombay he took music lessons from Krishnarao Jaokar and Janardan Jaokar. After his father's death, it was his responsibility to look after his sister. After he got her married, he went to Lucknow and continued his music studies under Ustad Ali Akbar Khan.
Ali Akbar took Jaidev as his music assistant when he composed music for Navketan's “Aandhiyan” and “Hum Safar”. From “Taxi Driver” he became SD Burman’s assistant. SD had full trust in his genius assistant; each time he entrusted him with a composing or creative job, he would advise him not to complicate it with difficult ‘murkis’ and ‘harkats’. Jaidev’s contribution to the compositions of SD Burman can be gauged through these very intricate nuances, very typical of him, obvious in a number of gems like ‘Phaili hui hain sapnon ki baahen’ (House No. 44), ‘Hum bekhudi mein tumko pukare chale gaye’ (Kala Pani), ‘Hum hain raahi pyar ke’ (Nau Do Gyarah), ‘Dekho rootha na karo’ (Tere Ghar Ke Saamne), ‘Aise to na dekho’ (Teen Deviyan), and ‘Tere mere sapne ab ek rang hain’ (Guide) to name a few.
Jaidev got an independent assignment in “Joru Ka Bhai”, after which he composed music for ChetanAnand’s “Anjali”. Music of both of these films became very popular. But, with “Hum Dono”, Jaidev came into the limelight, and how? Who can forget the bhajan ‘Allah Tero Naam, Ishwar Tero Naam’ sung by Lata! And as long as there are lovers around, ‘Abhi Na Jao Chhodkar’ will be their favourite anthem as if it is a Valentine message. ‘Main zindagi ka saath nibhata chala gaya’ became the life philosophy of Dev Anand. Jaidev built a reputation as a sensitive composer who did not compromise on the quality of music for the sake of applause.
After Hum Dono’s success, a promise was made by Dev Anand that every alternate film of Navketan will have music by SD Burman and Jaidev. Accordingly, SD Burman was entrusted the baton of “Kala Bazaar” and Jaidev ‘signed’ for the music of “Guide” for which he is believed to have composed a couple of tunes too (‘Tere mere sapne ab ek rang hain’, and ‘Din dhal jaaye haye raat na jaaye); however, the film was made and released finally with music by S D Burman, his career best. Jaidev proposed, Dev Anand disposed! Probably, for the first time, Jaidev felt exploited and stifled at Navketan and “Guide” marked the end of his long and fruitful musical association with both Dev Anand and SD Burman. Navketan, too, never called him back, which was the unkindest cut of all. Though the hurt feeling lurked in his mind for long, his respect and reverence for SD Burman remained the same till his last. Besieged by a chain of misfortunes, Jaidev made “Jo kho gaya main usko bhulata chala gaya” the mantra of his life with his spiritual character to ‘guide’ him.
What happened to Jaidev after Hum Dono is the kind of heart-wrenching cruelty that film industry keeps inflicting on its best talents. After the mega success of Hum Dono songs Jaidev was the natural choice of Navketan for their next film Guide starring Dev Anand. Jaidev composed and recorded two brilliant songs and all persons in Navketan management were extremely happy with the songs. But all of a sudden, mysteriously enough Jaidev was thrown out of Guide!
It is said that Dev Anand pressurized Jaidev to work as S.D. Burman’s assistant in Guide. It was a cruel event where a sensitive creative genius like Jaidev was suppressed by the heartless mighty. Jaidev was never again invited by Navketan to compose songs. Dev Anand used both the Jaidev songs in his film Guide. It is said that those two songs were ‘Din Dhal Jaaye Haye Raat Na Jaye’ and ‘Tere Mere Sapne Ab Ek Rang Hai’ sung by Mohammad Rafi. Being cast out of Guide was a very big setback in Jaidev’s film music career. He never really recovered from the shock. Jaidev used to frequently narrate such incidents to his friends, wracked by inconsolable grief.
This was the time when Jaidev met and got introduced to young composers like Roshan and Madan Mohan. This is a great example of the saying ‘genius finds genius’. Roshan invited Jaidev to sing in his very first film. Once, when Roshan and Jaidev were going together to a film company, they saw Madan Mohan. Roshan was reported to have told Jaidev, “I am going to introduce you to a brilliant young composer”. On introduction, Madan Mohan and Jaidev needed no time at all to become best of friends.
Roshan, Madan Mohan and Jaidev had many similarities. They were rare music geniuses. They were unfailingly great human beings too. Their unquenchable thirst ran to music, languages, literature and wine. None of them were given the importance or prominence that they richly deserved. But they lived their entire lives as friends and supporters. Theirs was a rare friendship in the ‘man eats man’ world of cinema.
Film world has its own inviolable rules. It needs people who can achieve mass popularity by shortest possible route. Its impatience with geniuses is well known. Geniuses like Salil Chowdhury, Madan Mohan, Roshan, Vasant Desai and Jaidev failed in this race to huge popularity. They did not have the talent to market themselves. What complicated the matter was group politics that acted as a barrier to fresh music entering the industry. True geniuses who blazed their own path overcoming all barriers in our film industry are very few.
Jaidev also composed the musical score for “Maitee Ghar”, a Nepali film produced by King Mahendra. The King was so pleased with Jaidev that he offered him a blank cheque and asked him to fill in any amount as he wished. But Jaidev returned the cheque and asked for a tiger skin instead!
People who speak of the Golden Age of Hindi film music mostly speak of commercially successful names like Naushad, Shankar Jaikishen, S.D. Burman, R.D. Burman, Kalyanji Anandji and Laxmikant Pyarelal. But there are many composers who established their identities through the uniqueness of their compositions alone. They may not have composed music for a very large number of films. Many of their films might not have succeeded at the box office.
Jaidev had composed music for less than thirty films. The number of songs to his credit may not be more than hundred and fifty. But Jaidev is a name imprinted on the hearts of lovers of vintage Hindi film songs as the genius who gave such fabulous numbers as ‘Kabhi Khud Pe Kabhi Haalaat Pe’, ‘Allah Tero Naam’ and ‘Abhi Na Jao Chhod Kar’. ‘Kabhi Khud Pe Kabhi Haalaat Pe’ is among the best ghazal numbers sung by Mohammad Rafi. There are many who rate the number sung by Lata Mangeshkar for Jaidev ‘Allah Tero Naam’ as the best prayer song to have emerged from Indian films. In a recent televised event, Jaidev’s ‘Abhi Na Jao Chhod Kar’ was rated both as their favourites and the best Hindi film song ever by today’s stars Shankar Mahadevan and Farhan Akthar.
It is possible that an average listener may identify Jaidev as the only music composer from Hindi films to have won the National award thrice. But the lamentable fact is that this composer of incomparable songs, winner of many state awards and winner of ‘Sur Singar Samsad’ award for Lifetime Achievement in Music remains so unknown to common man that we keep hearing the question, “Jaidev? Who is he?” even from people who love his music!
It was Jaidev who introduced ghazal singer Hariharan to film music in the film Gaman (1979) with the song ‘Ajeeb Saaneha’. This is not merely one of Hariharan’s best songs it has become one of the finest ghazals in Hindi film music. It won the U.P. state award and a nomination for National award for Hariharan. In the film Kinare Kinare, Jaidev brought together four leading singers Mohammad Rafi, Talat Mehmood, Manna Dey and Mukesh to sing a song to be picturised on one character played by Dev Anand. It was an event nobody had tried till then.
Jaidev gave Yesudas some of his best Hindi songs that suited the unique pathos that Yesudas carried in his singing style. He even made him sing for Amitabh Bachhan in Aalaap released in 1977. ‘Zindagi Ko Sawarna Hoga’ and ‘Chand Akela’ with a light classical touch and the sad lullaby ‘Koi Gata Main So Jata’ in this film, were Yesudas’ very important Hindi film songs. Another fine ghazal singer Bhupinder shot to fame with a fabulous Jaidev song from his film Gharonda. Who can forget the depth of feeling that the song ‘Ek Akela Is Shahar Mein’ carried with such conviction? Jaidev’s Gaman also saw the introduction of another important singer, Suresh Wadkar to Hindi films with the classical based ‘Seene Mein Jalan’.
Jaidev was admired by producers as a good composer, but they considered him good enough for the small-budget films. Though most of his films failed at the box office, many of them, such as 'Kinare Kinare', 'Reshma Aur Shera', 'Alap', 'Prem Parbat', 'Gaman' and 'Ankahee', are remembered for his imaginative musical score. It is unfortunate that despite his expertise in classical and folk music and imaginative approach, Jaidev had only 'Hum Dono' and to a certain extent 'Mujhe Jeene Do' as the only commercially successful films to his credit.
Jaidev was a lonely man with no house of his own and no family to take care of him except a few friends who were mostly from the literary fields or judges, lawyers, painters, high rank officials and dignitaries. He needed a room to display his awards and trophies but sadly, most part of his life in Bombay, he lived alone as a tenant in a single room at Lily Court, near Ritz Hotel, Churchgate. His “Gharonda” song ‘Ek akela is shehar mein aab-o-dana dhoondhta hai, ashiyana dhoondhta hai…’ was almost biographical and depicted his plight.
A winner of four Sur Singar Samsad awards, the Lata Mangeshkar Award of the MP Government and three National Awards (‘Reshma Aur Shera’, ‘Gaman’, ‘Ankahee’), Jaidev did not get the recognition he deserved and that is a sad commentary on the musical culture of modern cinema. Looking back on Jaidev's career as a music director, his struggles, achievements and set-backs, his pensive melody 'Kabhi khud pe kabhi halat pe rona aya' from 'Hum Dono' suddenly comes to mind and the heart grieves for the talent that was wasted. By a strange quirk of fate, before his composing days, Jaidev also sang songs on All India Radio. Sahir’s “Tang aa chuke hain kashm-e-kash-e-zindagee se hum” was first sung on AIR by none other than Jaidev. He was the first composer who used the 'glockenspiel' for the cigarette lighter tune in “Hum Dono”. (It was Kersee Lord who brought this instrument to India, and also played it to good effect.)
As compared to his contemporaries, Jaidev was underpaid or not paid in time or not at all paid many a times. But, money considerations did not dilute his passion or affect the quality of work. He was a workaholic and had a method to his madness; he took note of the backdrop of the film, the situation, the character, the dialect, the lyrics and worked meticulously on the details of the song, its arrangement and orchestration till the final recording. No doubt he was exploited many a times of which he was well aware, but it was only when he felt so, he cut off his ties with the filmmakers (like with Dev Anand and S D Burman after “Guide”) and dissociated himself from the composing assignment. Not many know that the title track of Ramanand Sagar’s epoch making serial “Ramayan” was by Jaidev. He left the serial at the nascent stage itself as he was not even reimbursed the taxi fare (from Churchgate to Natraj Studios, Andheri East), leave aside the credit or remuneration for composing!!
In Jaidev’s own opinion he gave his best for Hrishikesh Mukherji’s “Aalap”, but when Mukherji and Amitabh Bachchan were ignored, what can be said about Jaidev’s plight? But Jaidev gave his all for the ultimate reward he got from “Aalap”. His association with Harivanshrai Bachchan got him the opportunity to compose the “Madhushala”, which had Manna Dey singing the “Madhushala” into the annals of posterity!
After three decades of continuous struggle as a music director, and with only thirty six films to his credit, Jaidev was a tired man. Age was catching up with him and his health was failing. He had no one except friends to care for him and no house to call his own. Earlier he used to spend his vacant hours over a glass of liquor. But later even that blessing was denied to him on medical grounds. On December 14, 1986, when Jaidev stepped on the stage to receive the fourth Sur Singar Samsad award for his classical music in 'Ankahee', he looked weak but healthy enough to last another decade. The glow on his tired face was probably the last flash of a falling star. On January 6, 1987, he died suddenly, at the age of 68, leaving the film industry to grieve for the loss of a talent it had consistently neglected. Life had been unreasonably cruel to him but death was more than gracious to liberate him from the misfortunes of life.

Prologue Dr. Sonakshi Bose sat at her desk, in her chamber, going through the list of apartments she could rent in the city of Delhi. She had just received an job offer from one of the best hospitals in the city of Delhi. They wanted her as their head Psychiatrist and it was an offer that she wouldn't dream to refuse. But the only problem was, that they weren't giving her, her own accommodation. Even though they were paying for it, she had look for a place herself. She hadn't yet planned to settle in Delhi, but she knew for at least the next two years, she would work there. So she looked for rented apartments. As she scrolled up dissatisfied, there was one advertisement that caught her eye. **************************************************************** Devrath Dixit was one of the top businessmen of India at the moment. He achieved new heights everyday. A hardworking businessman, he had seen both dark days and happy days. Though he had his own house in Delhi, for work purposes he bought himself a penthouse apartment. He shifted to the apartment so that he could solely concentrate on his work. Though he would drop by his house whenever he missed his family, he mostly lived in the penthouse. But recently whenever he would be on tours, the penthouse would remain empty and become dusty. And Dev hated coming back to an empty house. After a suggestion from his secretary Tina, Dev decided to rent out half his apartment. Because the penthouse had two levels, he could easily rent out the ground level as he had set up everything in the top level. He kept the rent reasonable so that he would get a housemate soon enough, because the money wasn't his requirement. So he advertised on a site and waited. ****************************************************************** Two weeks after he gave the advertisement, she chose it as her abode for the next two years. So now Dev and Sonakshi's paths were about to meet. How would this meeting turn out to be? A chance acquaintance? Or a lifelong relationship? Mishti94 Chapter 1 "Kyaaa?" Sonakshi yelled, wide-eyed at Elena, with a hand on her chest. Elena fell back on the couch laughing like a madwoman while waving the letter she had been reading out loud in front of her sister's face. "Arey pagal, kahan na maine, Dr. Sonakshi Bose ko Goenka Hospitals, Delhi me Head Psychiatrist ka post mil gaya hai!" Elena proclaimed dramatically, once again making Sonakshi eyes just go wider, if that was even possible. "Kya bol rahi hai Elena? Meri Shona ko uska dream job mil gaya?" Asha asked Elena, smiling with pride and then went on to hug her daughter tightly. Sonakshi, who had been sitting still in shock all this while, finally reacted properly feeling her mother's hug. "Shyotti?! I can't believe this ma. Mera sapna poora ho gaya!" She said hugging her mother back with all the strength she could manage. "Sirf tera nahin Shona, tere baba ka bhi. Aaj woh rehtey toh kitne proud hote!" She said wiping a few stray tears that had slipped down her cheeks. Seeing her mother cry, Sonakshi also tried hard to control the tears that were on the verge of slipping out. Elena seeing the moment take a sad turn, jumped into the hug and said, "Yeh hug mere Bina kaise possible hai?" Wiping her Maashi's and sister's tears she happily said, "Aap dono bilkul pagal hai. Mesho abhi upar se aap dono ko dekh rahey hai and Sona ko apna full ashirwaad send kar rahey hai bag bhar bharke, aur yahan aap dono ro rahey ho. Bolo achha lagta hai?" She said trying to imitate the way her late uncle spoke.3 Asha and Sonakshi burst into laughter at her antics and patted her head affectionately. Elena was Asha's sister's daughter and had come to live with them two years back, right after Sonakshi's father, Mr. Bijoy Bose, passed away from a cardiac arrest. It had been a very difficult time for Sonakshi and her family and Elena had proved to be a great support for all of them. They never had financial problems because Bijoy had been a very successful businessman of his time and his business was now being perfectly handled by Sonakshi's elder brother Saurabh. "Hey Bhagwaan, inn sab kuch me, dada ko phone karna toh bhool hi gayi!" Sonakshi said, jumping up to get hold of her mobile so that she could call Saurabh, who was now busy on his Honeymoon. "Sona! Baad me karlena naah, Dada abhi Raunita Boudi (Bengali for Bhaabi) ke saath Busy hongey naah" Elena said winking at Sonakshi, while Asha swatted her hand laughing. Sonakshi also joined into the laughter and said, "Koi baat nahin. Apni favourite sister ke liye toh woh time nikal hi sakte hai naah?" She said winking back at Elena who threw a cushion, from the couch, at her. Dodging it gracefully Sona entered her room with the appointment letter in one hand and her phone pressed to her ear with the other. On the second ring her brother picked up, "Kya hai Shona, hum abhi Gondola ride pe aye hai, baad me call nahin kar sakti thi?" Saurabh said impatiently from the other side. Giggling at her brother's irritation Sonakshi said, "Kya Dada, honeymoon pe jakey, apni behen ko bhool gaye. Chee chee. Waise Venice achhi lagi aapko aur Raunita ko?" Saurabh just blew an impatient sigh and said, "Achha toh tab lagega naah jab tum phone rakhogi!" She was having fun, getting her brother all angry and annoyed, but didn't want to spoil their trip and so got to the point quickly. "Achha achha, aur taang nahin karungi. Buss yahi bolna tha ki mujhey woh job mil gayi Dada" she said gripping her phone tightly. Hearing silence on the other end she repeated, "Dada?" Immediately she heard him say, "Kya bola tumney? Who job? Matlab wahi job naah? Jiske liye tumney itni mehnat ki?" Sonakshi broke into an even bigger smile and said, "Haan Dada, wahi job. Mera aur Baba ke sapne wala job. Aap abhi Goenka Hospitals Delhi ke Head Psychiatrist se baat kar rahey hai!" She squealed happily.   From the other side she heard Raunita say, "Congratulations Sona, mujhey pata tha ki you'll do it!" Sonakshi laughed at her sister-in-law's confidence in her. But much before being her Sister-in-law, Raunita had been her best friend right from the diaper days. And Raunita never once doubted the abilities of her best friend. "Thank you Ro. Tumhare trust ne hi mujhey agey badhne ka strength diya" Sonakshi said sincerely, only to be immediately challenged by her brother, "Aur hum sab. Hum sab kya side me khade hoke dekh rahey the?" He demanded to know. Sonakshi laughed heartily at her brother's reaction and said, "Kya Dada. Badi jaldi gussa ho jate ho aap ajkal. Ja Ro, inko Gondola pe ghuma lao. Shayad dimaag thanda ho jaye!" She disconnected the call before her brother could react, listening to Raunita laugh and her brother grumble. She sat on her bed and took a deep breath and finally looked at the letter that Elena had read out to her a few minutes back. Finally, after years of working hard, she had fulfilled her father's wishes and her dream. She looked at her father's photo on the bedside table and said, "Finally Baba. Maine apka sapna poora kiya. I wish aap yahan hote. But I know ki aap mujhey ab tak help karte ayein hai. And I wish ki aap isi tarah mujhey help karte rahey. I love you Baba!" She said wiping a happy tear. She then proceeded to read the letter thoroughly to see what the rules were and was astonished to find that she had to look for her own accommodation even though the money for it would be given to her by them. On top of that they expected her to join within two days. Sonakshi scratched her head, "Itni jaldi ghar kaise dhoondo?" She pondered. As she thought hard about it, an idea struck her. Taking out her laptop, she opened a website that advertised about flat rentals in different cities. Setting her preferences on Delhi, she scrolled through the list of advertisements but nothing seemed to settle well with her. She didn't want it to be too expensive, neither did she want her apartment to be dingy and small. As she continued her search Asha called her from the dining room, "Shona taratari ao. Dinner thanda ho jayega. Phir karna jo bhi kar rahi ho." Sonakshi decided it was best to get some food into her stomach so that she could think properly. So leaving the laptop on the table, she left the room. Just as she exited the room, the pop up box inside her computer suggested another suitable match for her - "1st level of penthouse apartment for rent out. Fully furnished. Amount to be disclosed only after deal is sealed. For further information call Ms. Tina Patel at 9********7" ********************************************************** "Tina, Ahluwalia and Co waali file kahan hai?" Dev spoke into his intercom as he looked for a pen in his desk drawer. "Woh sir, file abhi tak accounts section se ayi nahin hai" Tina replied immediately. She knew Dev Sir hated waiting unless it was for a very important reason. "Kya matlab ayi nahin hai? Poochon unheyy, ki ek file ka itna time kyun lag raha hai. Kal jane se pehley I want that file on my desk" he finished brusquely and went back to working on the presentation that he needed for the tour he would go for, the very next day. Sipping his coffee, he went over the final corrections of his presentation for the fourth time so that there would be no scope for any mistake during the conference. Tina knew that her boss was stressed about the upcoming conference and hence didn't mind his rude tone at all. "Pata nahin kab Sir ko thoda rest milega" Tina thought sadly. Dev had been working almost continuously for the past three days to make sure everything would go perfectly. Often when under stress, Dev would become irritated and curt, but otherwise he was the best Boss one could hope for. He wasn't hailed one of the top Businessmen for just any reason. He worked hard to reach the top and worked twice as hard to retain it. And for Tina, Devrath Dixit was an inspiration. He had shifted into a penthouse apartment a year back, so that he could focus on his work properly because he had a huge loveable family who refused to let him work once he went back home and for a hardworking businessman, whose aim was to be on top, this did not sit well with Dev. But after moving into that penthouse, Dev had become somewhat of a recluse. When he lived with his family, he would still be dragged to different social events. But since his move, his social interaction had become zero, besides all his work meetings. Tina had been working for Dev for the past four years and had steadily become a kind of confidante for him besides being his PA. In fact they were such good friends that, it was Dev who set up Tina with his childhood friend who had now become her boyfriend and she couldn't thank him enough for this happy twist in her life. But lately her Boss turned friend was not doing well with all the stress. He would often overwork himself due to the lack of having anything else to do and that would ultimately lead to some sort of illness. Tina, being Tina, demanded that he do something other than work, like attending parties or going to hang out with friends or family. But Dev was stubborn and Tina knew he would never heed to these ideas. So she made a plan. She knew he needed someone in his life, someone who would love and appreciate him. Even if it wasn't a romantic attachment, he needed a real and proper friend. So she talked him into renting out half his penthouse. Of course she did not tell him her real motive. She just told him that he wouldn't have to return to an empty house everyday and would have someone to talk to in case he wanted to get rid of his loneliness when he needed a break. Dev had taken two whole months to warm up to the idea but finally two weeks back he had let Tina Post an advertisement to rent out the lower level of his penthouse. Tina checked the website once again. There were still no proper takers. She only hoped someone would take up the offer soon and she hoped it would be a woman. She had turned down all the male applicants for the ad. And till now only two women had contacted her for the same and both were not up to the mark according to her. Once again she never told Dev the real reason she rejected them. She was just waiting for the right one and she hoped that she would appear soon. Just as she finished pondering upon this thought Dev came out of his office and stood before her desk making her jump up and stand in attention. "Main ghar ja raha hoon. Kal subah tak file desk pe rakh dena. Kal subah 9 bajey meri flight hai aur main office akey phir jaunga. Tum sab kuch ek baar finally check kar lena and let me know before I board my flight, theek hai?" Tina nodded in agreement. "Ab ghar jao. Meri dusri car neechey hi hai, driver tumhey drop kar dega. It's late." He told her in that same curt tone. Tina smiled. No matter how much he wanted to show a cold exterior to the world, his warmth and goodness managed to show through every time. Dev was about to turn away when his gaze landed on Tina's computer monitor. He smiled a little, "Koi mila?" He asked. Tina sadly nodded, "No Sir. Ab tak koi dhang ka nahin mila" Dev just waved his hand dismissively, "Aur milega bhi nahin. Now don't waste time, ghar jao" and with that he was off. Tina sighed and slowly packed her things. But just as she was going to shutdown the computer a chat box below the advertisement opened. The message read, "Hello Ms. Tina, could I call you now? I am interested in talking about the penthouse on rent. And the name of the sender read "Dr. Sonakshi Bose."+ Tina abandoned her belongings on her chair and immediately got to work. This better be the one. She couldn't wait to see Dev Sir get back to his real self. ********************************************************

Ask any director who he’s been influenced by and Vijay Anand’s name will feature notably in that list. Because the filmmaker was not just a textbook of cinema. He was an entire curriculum. Not limited by any genre or stymied by his own sensibilities he could flit through comedy, thriller, drama, musical and even masala fare with ease. His directorial excellence was as much about his deft camera work as it was about his nuanced characters. Waheeda Rehman in Guide, despite playing an adulteress, went on to become an iconic symbol of rebellion. Vyjayanthimala went notches further as a dancer after she kept pace with his trailing camera in Jewel Thief. Shammi Kapoor became India’s answer to Elvis Presley as he matched Anand’s vision of a rockstar in Teesri Manzil. So did Mumtaz drape her sexuality in homely cotton sarees to give her best performance in Tere Mere Sapne…

Anand’s songs too outlived his times, most being the pride of satellite TV. Love awakening against a rising sun in Tere mere sapne ab ek rang hai. Dreams lettered in Pal pal dil ke paas… Love scaling heights in Dil ka bhanwar… Vijay Anand’s creative picturisations took the story forward. “My camera listens to the song and moves with it,” he once said. Long shots, lush backdrops and sharp intercutting brought out the poetry in the prose.

Yet Anand’s life was not confined to the boundaries of fame. He was essentially a seeker, his quest leading him to somewhere finding the ultimate answers with guru UG Krishnamurthy. It was also this philosophical side that helped him tide an ebbing career and health. For someone who could almost predict the period of his death, the shenanigans of fate were no threats. Today, Anand’s genius lives on in the cinematic jargon. In fact, Sriram Raghavan’s Johnny Gaddar, a noir thriller, paid a subtle tribute to the master in a scene where his blockbuster Johny Mera Naam played… Memories of an unforgettable man and an extraordinary filmmaker in the words of wife Sushma Anand… THE MAKER Goldie’s (Vijay Anand’s pet name) childhood was spent in Gurdaspur in Punjab. A fair child with blonde curls, he was naughty. Hence, his father called him ‘Goldilocks’. With time, locks nikalgaye, ‘Goldie’ rehgaya! Goldie lost his mother when he was seven. He, along with his two older sisters (they were a family of nine siblings), came to live with Chetan saab (Anand, filmmaker) and Uma bhabhi (Anand) at their ‘shack’ in Juhu. Chetan saab was older to Dev saab (Anand, actor/filmmaker) by 10 years, who in turn was older to Goldie by 10. Uma bhabhi was like a mother to Goldie and had a great influence on him. She urged him to write, given his sharp imagination. Goldie often said, “I owe everything to Bhabhi.”

While Goldie was studying in St Xaviers College in Mumbai, he directed several plays, including the play Rehearsal. It was a takeoff on Hamlet and the catch phrase ‘to be or not to be’. Just out of college, Goldie wrote the script of Navketan’s Taxi Driver (1954), with Uma bhabhi, which Chetan saab directed. He had also written the script of Nau Do Gyarah (1957) and wanted to direct it but didn’t have the courage to tell Dev saab about it. Once when Dev saab was going to Mahableshwar, he asked Goldie for the script to read it on the way. Goldie refused saying he’d narrate it himself. He hopped in the car and narrated the story through the journey. On reaching Mahableshwar, Dev saab called his office and said, “Navektan’s next production will be directed by Vijay Anand. Make an announcement!” From then Goldie’s career as a director took off.
Kala Bazaar (1960) was one film where all the three brothers worked together. Dev saab produced it. Goldie wrote and directed it. Chetan saab acted in it. During his college days, Goldie would see tickets being sold in black at theatres including Metro, Liberty and Empire… That gave birth to this concept. He even included real shots of the premiere of Mehboob Khan’s Mother India with actors including Dilip Kumar, Nargis Geeta Dutt, Guru Dutt, Raaj Kumar and Rajendra Kumar.
Amarjeet, who was a publicist and Goldie’s friend, lived in Chetan saab’s shack with Goldie. Once, Goldie fell sick. Amarjeet nursed him with affection. He’d serve him soup, press his legs, check the temperature… Goldie promised him a directorial assignment. Goldie wrote a detailed script of Hum Dono (1961, had Dev Anand in a double role) with everything marked…. entry, exit, camera placement… so that Amarjeet wouldn’t face difficulty while directing. But yet Amarjeet couldn’t do it. Finally, Goldie directed the film but gave Amarjeet the credit that he’d promised him.

Nutan was one of Goldie’s favourite actresses and suited perfectly in the comedy Tere Ghar Ke Saamne (1963). Dil ka bhanwar had a beautifully filmed song. It was shot in the Qutub Minar to get the feel of Delhi. The duo (Dev-Nutan) climbs up as friends but when they come down, they’re lovers. The song Ek ghar banaaonga had camera tricks – Nutan is seen in the glass of whiskey. Guide (1965) was Navketan’s first film in colour. Based on RK Narayan’s novel The Guide, Tad Danielewski was directing the English version for writer Pearl S Buck. Chetan saab was to shoot the same scenes for the Hindi version He found it frustrating. So when he got a financier for Haqeeqat (1964) he quit. Goldie accepted it on the condition that he’d rewrite the script as a subject like blatant adultery would not be accepted by Indian audiences. Guide became a classic because it excelled in photography (Fali Mistry), acting (Dev Anand-Waheeda Rehman), music (SD Burman), editing (Vijay Anand and Babu Shiekh)… The song Tere Mere Sapne was shot in the early light in Udapiur. It was an emotional mood where Dev saab builds hope in a dejected Waheeda Rehman. Aaj phir jeene ki tamanna hai was filmed in the Chittorgarh Fort in Rajasthan. Her playing with the straw showed her light-heartedness. When she throws the matki singing dil woh chala it spoke of shedding the past and new beginnings. The finest compliment for Goldie came from RK Narayan who said, “The film is more beautiful than my book.” Goldie went on to direct the spy thriller Jewel Thief (1967). For the legendary Hothon pe aisi baat filmed on Vyjayanthimala, three to four cameras were put up including a trolley camera. Later, Dev saab was to do Nasir Hussain’s thriller Teesri Manzil (1966). When he couldn’t, Shammi Kapoor was roped in. Initially, Shammiji came at his own time. But he realised that this man comes at 9 am with a ready script and his cameras are placed beforehand. He too began coming on time. Shammiji and Goldie struck a great rapport. Aaja aaja and Oh haseena zulfonwali will always be remembered for their energy, Shammiji playing a musician in the film. O mere sona re is my favourite because through the song Goldie played interestingly with Shammiji’s briefcase. Later, Johny Mera Naam (1970), an entertainer, further proved Goldie’s versatility. In Pal bhar ke liye… Goldie played with the windows, where the persistent lover (Dev saab) finally woos the heroine (Hema Malini).

A film that remained close to Goldie’s heart was Tere Mere Sapne (1971, based on AJ Cronin’s The Citadel). He was hurt that the ‘sensitive’ film was not a commercial success. It was the story of human relationships amidst materialism. Goldie met doctors to understand the authentic body language for his doctor protagonist (Dev Anand). The songs were unique too. Mumtaz sings Radha ne maala japi when she accepts the hero’s marriage proposal. Hey maine kasam li was filmed on Dev saab and Mumtaz on a bicycle. Jeevan ki bagiya was shot in close-ups and established their intimacy. But the less heard Mera antar ek mandir, a song, which hinted at conceiving a baby, was Goldie favourite. Goldie liked Nutan and Waheeda for their expressive eyes. He found Nanda to be a fine artiste as much as he liked Asha Parekh for her naughtiness. But in Mumtaz, he saw a great dancer and actress. Basically, he liked simplicity in a woman.
My favourite in Blackmail (1973) is Mile mile do badan. It’s the first time that the couple (Dharmendra-Raakhee) have come together. They’re hiding among the wood pile in the jungle even as dogs are sent to hunt them. The danger and intimacy makes the song beautiful. Pal pal dil ke saath is romantic because of the dreamy picturistaion. He directed some more films like Chhupa Rustom (1973), Ram Balram (1980) and Rajput (1982) but didn’t meet with much success. He also happened to act Kora Kagaz(1974) and Main Tulsi Tere Aangan ki (1978), which were huge hits. Goldie was proud of his later films Hum Rahe Na Hum (1984), a relationship saga that featured him with Rehana Sultan and Shabana Azmi and Jaana Na Dil Se Door with newcomers. Sadly, he couldn’t release them and that left him dejected. He’d say, “Perhaps, my time is over.”

THE MAN Goldie and I got married in 1978 during the shoot of Ram Balram. We cared for each other to the extent that we wanted to get married. He liked my simplicity. I understood his temperament. He rarely lost his cool. I was the one who’d lose my temper. I was crazier. I’d deliberately do things to annoy him. Sometimes, he manaoed (cajoled) me, sometimes I manoed him. Yes, women did throw themselves at him. But I never felt jealous or insecure. Rather, I’d tease him, “Main dekh rahi hoon! Maze karo! Enjoy yourself.” He rarely complimented me but when he did it made me happy. He liked me in sarees and sometimes picked up sarees and pieces of jewellery for me.
We loved to travel. Our best holiday was in Hampstead in London just after our marriage. There were theatres across the road. We shopped a lot. Once when we were in Europe, he quietly slipped out. “Yeh lene gaya tha,” he said later showing me a sweater he had bought for me.

He had a passion for ballroom dancing, waltz and fox trot. As a youngster, he’d travel from Chetan saab’s shack to a school in Colaba to learn waltz. He did a dance with Bindu in Chupa Rustom. The song Joh main hota ek toota tara was filmed on the bonnet of a car. He also loved shirts. He’d pick a dozen at a time. He was fond of watches and cologne and had grown fond of horses when he was working with Kalyanji Anandji.
Chetan saab’s shot division was superb. But Chetan saab changed things on the set, he was spontaneous. While Goldie went fully prepared. That’s why actors understood they couldn’t fool with him. They understood he meant business.

Goldie liked Guru Dutt’s realism, Raj Kapoor’s glamour and the existentialism in the works of Satyajit Ray. Meghe Dhaka Tara (1960) by Ritwik Ghatak was his favourite. But as a filmmaker he didn’t want to make realistic movies. He’d say, “This is a media for entertainment!” Goldie was not fond of drinks and nursed a peg throughout the evening. Rather, he was interested in spirituality and astronomy. He had read all religious books – the Gita, the Bible, the Upanishads, the Koran… He became a disciple of Osho Rajneesh but reached a dead end when he couldn’t find answers. Then he met UG Krishnamurthy (spiritual guru) in whom he found solace. UG once said, “If anyone, anywhere has understood me, it’s Goldie.” Instead of revolting, he accepted life as it came. He was against pretence. He never missed his past glory. He’d say it was a closed chapter. He didn’t want to write his biography. He believed, “Joh hoga so hogaya. My work will speak for itself.”
Towards the end he had developed a heart problem. Vaibhav had assisted him in Jaana Na Hum Se Door and then went off to attend a filmmaking course at the Lee Strasburg Institute in New York. Vaibhav returned in January 2004. Goldie passed away in February 2004. In fact, having some knowledge of astrology Goldie had predicted that February 2004 was a bad month for him. His only regret was that he couldn’t do much for our son Vaibhav, who’s inherited his sensibilities. After he passed away you do tend to get isolated. But it’s fine. I’ve taken to singing – something I was always interested in. And in my circle of friends I often sing Tere mere sapne ab ek rang hai…

Taxi Driver was inspired by Hollywood’s noir movement
Nau Do Gyarah was an urban thriller/road film with elements borrowed from Frank Capra’s It Happened One Night (1934).
Vijay Anand filmed Aaja panchi akela hai in a constricted space (a room and a toilet!) in Nau Do Gyarah. The film’s other hits were Hum hain rahi pyar ke and Aankhon mein kya ji.
Rhim jhim ke tarane (Kala Bazar) is remembered for Dev Anand and Waheeda Rehman under an umbrella!
In Tere Ghar Ke Saamne, Anand used camera tricks where Dev Anand imagines Nutan inside his drink! Then Dev’s aide puts an ice cube into the glass causing Nutan to shiver!
Hum Dono with Sahir Ludhianvi’s lyrics and Jaidev’s music gave the immortal gems Allah tero naam and Abhi na jaao choddh kar.

Kartik was supremely excited! It was an extremely special day after all! It had been a whole year since Naira had finally expressed her feelings! He could remember it like it was yesterday. Naira's phone buzzed on her bedside table. It read, " Happy first anniversary my jaan! I will pick you up at six. Be ready! Love you! :) ". Naira couldn't help but smile. A scarlet blush crept over her cheeks as she thought of their year together. They had only just started their journey together when tragedy struck and her mother passed away. Her mother had been the most beloved person in their household and with her gone, it had seemed like the happiness, the laughter, the warmth had also gone. It had become cold, and gloomy. Naira was going through unimaginable grief and pain but she had to be strong for her family. She missed her mother dearly but she couldn't fall apart in front of her family. Kartik had been her rock all through out and in him, she found someone who not only shared her grief, but understood her loss, having lost his mother a few years back. Kartik was extremely proud of her about the way she had handled herself and kept the family together. Their relationship had only strengthened and grown over the past year. Things had started to settle down in the past few months. They had gradually come to terms with the situation and the grey clouds looming over their house were beginning to disappear. Kartik was busy making arrangements for their special day. He wanted this day to be memorable and was doing everything just to see Naira smile. She deserved it after everything. He had planned for a dinner on a private rooftop. He had booked the chef from Naira's favourite restaurant to prepare a delicious meal for them. He had even arranged for a live violin player so they could dance under the moonlight! But the highlight was that he had planned a helicopter ride over the city before dinner! It was quite unlike him to be this extravagant but he thought this day called for it! It was for his Naira after all! He dressed up in a blazer and kept his hair a little messy, just the way Naira liked it. He drove up to the Singhania house and waited. And then he saw her! She took his breath away! She looked absolutely resplendent in a royal blue gown! He couldn't take his eyes off her! She had to snap her fingers to get him out of his trance! "You are looking exquisite!" he said. It made her blush crimson. He liked the effect.   She tried to ask him multiple times on their way what his plan was. But he was adamant that it has to be a surprise. They had parked in the basement of a sky-high building. He couldn't wait to take her on the helicopter ride. The timing was perfect and so was the weather. The sky was crimson but it wasn't dark yet. So they could watch the sunset and the lights below. It would be an amazing view! Naira wondered what is going on while Kartik seemed like an excited child in an amusement park! She smiled at how adorable he was! They entered the elevator to make their way up and as it was ascending, it suddenly came to a halt with a jolt. Kartik's face fell while Naira was confused. The lights went out and Naira suddenly held his hand. Thankfully, there was an emergency power supply and the lights flickered back on. Kartik: Naira, tum daro mat. Sab thik ho jayega. I will take care of it. Naira: Tum mujhe samjha rahe ho ya khud ko? Main Naira hoon! Main darti warti nahi hoon! Kartik: Achha fine meri sherni! Ab mujhe ye phone chal raha hai kya dekhne do. Kartik used the emergency phone in the lift to call maintenance. They said they would see what the problem was and fix it as soon as possible. Meanwhile they need not worry as there was an air vent in the lift and the emergency power supply was working so the lights would remain on. Kartik was getting frantic by the minute as time was going by and he so wanted this evening to be special. Finally, both of them sat down side by side as there was nothing to do but wait. Naira looked at Kartik's upset face and held his hand giving him a reassuring look. Naira: Waise ab to bata do ki plan kya hai? Kartik: Nahi! Jab thodi der mein lift thik ho jayegi to tumhe apne aap pata chal jayega. But alas! It took the maintenance people three hours to get things fixed. By the time they got out of the lift, it was too late for the helicopter ride! Kartik had no option but to proceed to the next part of his plan. He was disheartened but he was determined to make at least dinner memorable! Of course, fate had other plans. They got stuck in terrible traffic for another hour and by the time they reached the venue he had booked, it was already shut! Kartik's spirits were completely dampened now. All his plans to make this day special were falling through. They walked back to the car and he leaned on it utterly disheartened. Naira saw this and leaned beside him. Kartik: Maine kya kya plan kiya tha! I wanted this day to be our best day together! He narrated all his plans for the night. She beamed listening to all his plans thinking of all the trouble he went through. She took his hand in hers and kissed it. Naira: Tumhi to hamesha kehte ho na. Ye humari love story hai! Ye normal kaise ho sakti hai! Kuch na kuch gadbad to honi hi hai! Phir upset kyun hona? I take this as a sign that everything is great between us! Agar gadbad na hui, to pakka gadbad hai! Kartik smiled hearing this. Kartik: Par humari date to adhoori reh gayi! Naira: Arre! Hum done abhi saath to hai! We still have an hour before our anniversary is over. Aur waise bhi hum dono ka saath hona is the most important thing. Baki sab to add-ons hai. Its alright. They looked around and realised they had parked on a beautiful road. It was empty but for the two of them. There were trees on both sides of the road making almost a canopy above. It was beautifully tranquil with just a couple of street lamps lighting the way. The entire setting seemed right out of a fairy tale. The opportunity seemed too good to waste and Kartik was struck with an idea. The radio in the car started playing the song, "Main agar kahoon, tumsa hassen, Kaynaat mein, nahi hai kahin, Taarif ye bhi to, sach hai kuch bhi nahi" Kartik went down on his knees and asked for a dance. Naira took his hand and they both got lost in each others arms, swaying to the soft tune in the moonlight. After a while, a sound broke their reverie and they turned around to see a chaat vendor making his way home. Naira excitedly exclaimed "Pani puri!" as it was her absolute favourite! They were both ravenous after the happenings of the evening and ate to their heart's content. They started walking down the road hand in hand. Naira's hand fit in Kartik's like it was made for her. There was cool breeze in the air and Kartik noticed Naira was shivering a little. The gentleman that he was, he gave her his blazer.  Their idyllic walk was interrupted when they came across a small 'chai ki tapri'. They both sat down to have a steaming cup of tea. The hot 'adrak wali chai' helped bring some warmth into the chilly night. Just then, Kartik had an idea. He had a spare blanket in the back of his car. He took Naira back to his car. Then both of them sat on the bonnet of the car with their backs against the windshield with a cozy blanket wrapped around them. They looked up into the sky and it was magnificent! It was clear and shone bright with stars. They lay in the silence beside each other taking in all the beauty. After a while, Naira sat up and broke the silence. Naira: You know I always thought that people become stars when they leave us. Kya mumma bhi taara bani hongi, Kartik? Kartik sat up and took both her hands in his. Kartik: Mere paas tumhare liye kuch hai. Socha tha, uss rooftop par dance ke baad tumhe ye anniversary gift dunga. Tumhe uss sabse bade taare ke bilkul bagal me woh cute sa, chhota sa taara dikh raha hai? I had it registered online and named it "Akshara". Ab tumhe jab bhi mumma ki yaad aye, tum bas uss taare ko dekh liya karo. Aur wo bhi humesha tumhe dekh sakti hai. I am sure she is very proud of you Naira. And so am I!   Naira's eyes glistened with tears listening to this. She couldn't find words to thank him and she didn't need to. Such was the beauty of their relationship. They understood without words. She hugged him tight and poured all her emotions into the hug. She said a simple 'Happy anniversary Mendak' and melted into his arms. He kissed her forehead and understood everything she didn't say. They were best friends, they were soul mates. They just lay down in the starry night reveling in the beauty of the night, the comfort of the silence, the safety of their togetherness and the warmth of the blanket. That night, that star 'Akshara' shone the brightest for them. And in the end, it indeed turned out to be a memorable night of their lives. Miraya
