Romain Virgo Excites Fans With U.S. Tour Date Announcement During VP Records’ Record Store Day Celebration
On Saturday afternoon, the VP Records store in Jamaica, Queens, was abuzz with excitement. For Record Store Day 2024, visitors flowed freely through the historic space, combing through rows of CDs and vinyl, meeting and taking photos with Romain Virgo, and enjoying an hours-long sound system session outside. Around 6 p.m., the event culminated with Romain Virgo’s announcement to the large crowd that he would be bringing ”The Gentle Man” tour to the Crown Hill Theatre in Brooklyn on June 7 and 8 – his first shows in the city since last year.
Hosted by Garfield ‘Chin’ Bourne of Sound Chat Radio, the event brought together Reggae fans from all of NYC’s five boroughs – and beyond. It featured sound systems like Bass Odyssey, LP International, Nexxt Level, Super Force, and Dub Electric playing vintage dubplates in VP Records’ parking lot, with artists like Valiant and Tarrus Riley making special guest appearances.
Authentic sound system culture was on full display as the various “sounds” went dub-for-dub against each other – a segment that was followed by Romain Virgo toasting over classic dancehall riddims.

For hours, fans took advantage of the opportunity to get CD copies of The Gentle Man, Romain Virgo’s new album, signed by the artist. Many were quick to scoop up this year’s exclusive Record Store Day titles: re-issues of Don Carlos’ Pass Me the Lazer Beam LP, The Aggrovators’ Dubbing at King Tubby’s, Vol. 1 and 2, and of Yellowman’s Zungguzungguguzungguzeng.
“The turnout on Saturday was a strong reminder that people still have a deep love for vinyl, Reggae music, and sound system culture. It was a great day for the community, and we look forward to putting on more events like this in the future,” said Chris Chin, President of VP Records. “Thanks to the VP Records team for their contributions to the event’s success, especially Dane ‘Fatman’ Bogle for his coordination of the sound system activities.”
Romain Virgo’s upcoming shows in Brooklyn are part of a longer string of U.S. East Coast concerts, beginning at Toad’s Place in New Haven, CT on June 6 and wrapping up at The Ave Live in Philadelphia, PA on June 9. The tour is in support of his latest album, which features Masicka, Patoranking, Capleton, and Jesse Royal.
More information on the tour will be announced soon.

BY THE C @ City Beach Oval, Perth 27/03/2021
After a year of postponements, the sun has finally set on By The C in 2021. Coming full circle, the festival concluded in its home city of Perth, Western Australia over the weekend.
City Beach Oval was positively picturesque for the return of live music festivals. It’s been touch-and-go in Western Australia since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, with many rescheduled concerts unable to go ahead. By The C was lucky enough to be given the green light and they certainly delivered with the original line up that was promised. Around 8,000 people gathered for an afternoon of Australian rock and acoustic music with many eager fans setting up camp as soon as the gates opened. With sunny skies and a cool ocean breeze, conditions couldn’t have been better for this highly anticipated event.

Perth locals Coterie opened the day and earned themselves some new fans as they warmed the crowd with their easy listening, indie beach vibes. When Killing Heidi took the stage many found themselves jamming in their seats to early 2000’s hits “I Am”, “Mascara” and “Weir”. Tex Perkins–who ages like fine wine–charmed everyone with a mixed set of songs made famous with Tex, Don and Charlie, Beasts of Bourbon and The Cruel Sea including “This Is Not The Way Home” and “The Honeymoon is Over”. Then it was You Am I’s turn and they made the biggest impact on the daytime crowd yet. From the melancholic sing-along during “Heavy Heart” to the indie anthem “Berlin Chair”, Tim Rogers had fans begging for an impossible encore.

As the sun began to set and the crowd started to cool off after You Am I’s explosive set, Pete Murray strolled on stage and offered a relaxing, hip swaying set with his warm familiar vocals and acoustic melodies. In between songs like “So Beautiful” and “Better Days”, Murray chatted with the crowd, taking the time to thank the promoter John Zaccaria and Zaccaria Touring for all their hard work for getting them across the country in these difficult times. At this point, a small group of dancers had congregated around the outskirts of the stage, abandoning their chairs for the night in the lead up to the headlining act: Icehouse.

With 40 years of touring under their belts, Icehouse are an iconic Aussie act. The stage was doused in a dark blue light as the band opened with the song from which they took their name. Following was “Electric Blue” which coaxed more people up on their feet than ever before. Their set was a showcase from their glittering back catalog which could have gone on all night. Davies then handed the microphone over to specialist vocalist Michael Paynter, who gave two emotional acoustic performances of “Street Cafe” and “Man of Colours” with guitarist Paul Gildea (Davies bringing out the oboe for the latter).

There was plenty of banter between the band members and the audience. Davies affectionately chastised the crowd for staying in their seats, noting that “we have only travelled 2,500kms to be here tonight, but if you want to stay seated, that’s fine.” One of the stand out moments of the night then came with the sax solo in “I Don’t Believe Anymore”. It wasn’t until they started playing their instantly recognisable anthem “Great Southern Land” that the majority of the crowd finally stood up. Two awesome covers of David Bowie’s “The Jean Genie” and The Sex Pistols “Pretty Vacant” were a nod to their pub band cover version days. Finally, “I Can’t Help Myself” and “We Can Get Together” had the appreciative crowd making the most noise of the evening. For encore, rocky numbers “Fatman” and “Nothing Too Serious” were a great way to cap off an excellent day of quality home grown talent.

Who We Be: DMX Apologizes To Lloyd Banks For Lyricist Snub

While we all know that Dark Man X is far from perfect he has shown to speak from a real place. Recently he put his foot in his mouth but now has made good on the matter.
As spotted on Hip-Hop N More DMX left several fans and Rap aficionados confused during a video call with Fatman Scoop. When asked by the Party King on who he would go record for record on a Verzuz battle he once again made it clear he wants to battle Jay-Z. Naturally the conversation progressed to name dropping some of the game’s most respected MC’s. Things unfortunately went left when Lloyd Banks’ name was brought up. “Lloyd Banks? Lyrical?” the Yonkers native questioned with obvious doubt in his tone. “Lloyd Banks of course, he had some of the illest lines ever,” Scoop replied.
This quickly got back to The Punchline King to where he responded on Twitter. He theorized that the spite could be a result of him working with the Ruff Ryders member in the past. “So because I didn’t come to the studio to work when HE reached out..I’m not that good?” he wrote.

It is a good thing that DMX can admit his errors and soon issued an informal apology via social media. He wrote “It takes a real ni*** to admit when he’s wrong…my apologies to loyd banks I was thinking tony yayo when I was asked about banks. I f*** with banks!”. You can see his mea culpa below.
