Some of you may have seen my post on Tuesday about reaching a new milestone of 1120BPM in my quest to break the world record for fast single strokes! (The record currently stands at 1208BPM) As you can see, 1120 is at the very limit of my technique at the moment and I wouldn't exactly call it comfortable haha! However, reaching this new milestone has certainly made playing at 1000 much more comfortable. Just need to get comfortable with 1120 and I'll hopefully reach my next target of 1160. I'm counting it by playing 16th notes with the metronome and multiplying the metronome speed by 4 to get the total BPM. eg. 280×4=1120. In honor of our @brooklynvegan single debut today, I thought I would post a clip from @recordthieves practice a while back when we were writing all of the songs on this album. Today is a such a big day for us, we have worked so hard on this record and can’t thank everyone enough for the belief and support in it. This is how I play 24/7, because this is what music does for me. The fire within me is a volcano when I am playing music so you get 110% of me even at practice or when “just jamming”. My guitarist for @recordthieves and I are toying around with some new song ideas. I decided to post this with the demo music included to show my approach to writing drums. As you can see I’m not trying to do crazy fills and be all over the place. I believe as a drummer it’s our job to be the foundation of a song and lift up all the other members in the band. Play your parts, play them well and play them solid but remember to PAY ATTENTION to your band mates... accent them, match your kick patterns to their picking patters etc. soon you’ll find yourself in a much tighter band and will be a lot happier. #flashbackfriday to when I was practicing along with the music from @karencuda and Chris (band never gained a name). It was the very first time I had jammed with a band since moving to CO and I was extremely nervous so I spent 4 hours a day practicing the material. Working hard on @recordthieves preproduction today. I see allot of ads these days about “that perfect drum sound” and what not and it really bothers me that all drummers are being turned into drum machines. As a drummer, engineer and producer I can tell your that music is beyond cookie cutter theses days and needs to be opened back up. Raw talent needs to be shined upon again and people Need to stop trying to take things like drums tracks and simply replace all the sounds with absolute perfect hits and then lock the performance onto “the grid”. I for one don’t stand for it. If I hand my tracks over and the producer/engineer locks them down I say something and make them start over or I will take my sessions somewhere else. More musicians (especially drummers) need to stand up to this modern day “perfection” so we can have music with a human feel again. Consistency is one thing I’ve strived for since the beginning of my drumming career. Listening to drummers like Eric Sandin of @nofx and @hxclegend of @bouncingsoulsnj (now @joanjett), I always heard this sound of super solid, consistent their and drums fills that blew my mind. I strived to recreate that sound everyday when I was playing and it helped me become a more consistent drummer over the years. I still use that same train of thought when I’m recording or playing in general. One of my favorite things in playing music live is minor tempo changes. Allot of time when writing with other musicians you’ll find that parts of songs need to slow down or speed up in order to have the correct feel. This is the natural side of being a musician that I love the most. Feeling the energy from other humans and rolling with it. Your job as drummer is to keep everyone in the band in line (sort of) but at the same time don’t be afraid to allow for sections of the song to take on their own feel and tempo. In this song, this is the “bridge” and when we tried to keep it at the same tempo of the rest of the song it felt rushed so we just go with my bass player @dhutch303’s feel and timing and it always sounds great. Once the bridge is over it’s my job to take us back to the Tempo we were originally at for the rest of the tune. Be mindful, feel the music as much as you can and allow for some play in the tempo, otherwise your just a drum machine and there’s no point in that.
