“In the sixteenth century, the nobility ceased to be the sole source of fashion inspiration. Playgirls (asobime) – multitalented, trendy ladies who led rather public lives (sometimes glossed as ‘courtesans���) – wore their kosode belted with long tasseled silk cords. The cords, called Nogoya obi, were woven according to a style then popular in China, roped about the hips six or seven times, and tied in a looping bow.” (Dalby 37)

“Playgirls also did their hair into Chinese chignons, initiating a fashion for women to put up their hair. In previous ages, men had been the ones to oil and arrange their tresses. Women had favored long straight locks, or perhaps a simple ponytail.” (Dalby 37)

“Late Edo fashion for women was undeniably restrictive. [...] Hairstyles for women had developed into the elaborate comb-studded coiffures familiar from woodblock prints. With such a coiled oiled structure on her head, a woman couldn’t even sleep freely. Finally, the practice of applying lead- and mercury-based whitening cosmetics, originally a custom limited to the noblility, had now spread into common popularity. By the nineteenth century, being fashionable was truly hazardous to a Japanese woman’s health.” (Dalby 50)

Fashion Timeline

In researching this topic, I will focus on fashion from 1910 to modern day. This research will then be sub-divided into decades. I will refer to journals and magazines from the time, e.g. Vogue archives from places such as the University library. I would also gather information from the Victoria and Albert museum website giving a general overview, I would then use the time toast website to back-up the research further. This source shows each decade as a timetable, when this is clicked on, it gives a summary on what the style of the decade was and a picture to illustrate the text, showing outfits from the time. This is all part of my secondary research. Sources of secondary information will be used including fashion history books, and academic journals. I would also use primary sources by going to visit exhibitions including works of designers. One exhibition that would be mentioned is the Yves Saint Laurent Exhibition: Style is Eternal. This would give me an insight into what was done at the time. After viewing these exhibitions, a report will be written containing a general overview of what I discovered in the exhibition. In addition, interviews will be conducted with industry professionals to understand their experience of the industry. The research techniques used to acquire this information would be observation and referencing sources such as books and journals. Images will be collected and contextual information gathered surrounding the time period to validate the research and how it applied to life at the time.

Trayectoria de la moda a través del tiempo

Con el principio del siglo se pone de moda una silueta particular que remarcaba estándares de belleza difíciles de alcanzar. Esta silueta era en forma de S y  se lograba con un corset bastante entallado que empujaba el busto hacia arriba y hacía la cintura mucho más estrecha,cosa que hacía difícil respirar a las damas de la época. Igual que todo, con el paso del tiempo se volvió menos radical la forma, el corset le da paso al sostén y nace el escote en V ; tambien las faldas pierden vuelo y se hacen mas pegadas al cuerpo.

En 1920 aparece la tendencia de las Flappers que vestían una figura recta y abstracta con medias hasta el muslo. de igual manera el mundo se había empapado del Little Black Dress, contribución de Coco chanel.

La segunda guerra mundial causa una disminución de telas que se tenían que racionar entre todos. Los tejidos eran de menor calidad y el look general tendió al estilo militar.
