The heART of Design: SPOTLIGHT on Ella Pritsker Couture

Everything in ELLA PRITSKER’s world is designed to project beauty, grace and heart. Her custom women’s clothing amplifies the inner beauty of each woman who wears her designs. She nurtures the next generation of fashion designers through her couture sewing classes at the Maryland Center of Fashion Design, and she supports numerous philanthropic events to raise money and awareness for causes close to her heart.

On November 13, Ella’s designs will be featured again on the runway during the annual Fashion Rocks Autism fundraiser. This year Rachel Barcellona, a poster child for autism awareness and the Miss Florida International 2016, will be sporting Ella’s designs on the runway.

“The best way to succeed is to help somebody else out,” says Ella. “By helping Fashion Rocks Autism, we help them raise money and promote awareness of autism in all its multi-faceted ways.”

This community-minded approach to business has helped Ella thrive for 20 years amidst the roller coaster of personal shopping habits since she began designing custom women’s clothing. She predicts that women’s couture is about to experience a renaissance.

“When I first came to the U.S. [from Soviet Russia] in the 1990s, I saw the decline of one-of-a-kind clothing stores being replaced by mega malls,” she says. “Now we’re seeing more one-of-a-kind little shops pop up. I see so many people wanting to start their brand, their clothing line. People are interested in learning how to sew again. We all want to have more unique things that reflect our personality.”

That’s just what Ella does with her clients - produce an outer reflection of the soul of each woman. “Our ideal client is a woman who wants to be dressed and feel confident in what she wears. She’s also someone who needs to look her best every day, so she’s probably a working woman in a leadership position, or she could also be a mother-of-the-bride who wants to look really amazing for one special occasion.”

When Ella isn’t dressing the most influential women of Maryland and the east coast, she’s leading and developing sewing classes at the Maryland Center of Fashion Design for anyone who is interested in developing a career in fashion or simply improving their skills. “Basically I’m constantly training my replacement. That’s promoting the art of couture.”

Students range from age 7 to 89 years old. “A lady called and said, I heard about your classes. My children are grown, and I’d like to pursue my lifelong passion and love for fashion design. She was 89 years old. Passion and love does not die with age. She did so well in class. I had tears in my eyes.”
