It's so wild to me how ag industry folks will admit in one breath that U.S. agriculture would collapse without foreign workers, and then in the next breath complain about how high wages are for H-2A workers. Like, I accept that y'all aren't hearing yourselves, but shit.

Lindt, Mondelēz, and Nestlé together raked in nearly $4 billion in profits from chocolate sales in 2023. Hershey’s confectionary profits totaled $2 billion last year. The four corporations paid out on average 97 percent of their total net profits to shareholders in 2023. The collective fortunes of the Ferrero and Mars families, who own the two biggest private chocolate corporations, surged to $160.9 billion during the same period. This is more than the combined GDPs of Ghana and Ivory Coast, which supply most cocoa beans. Decades of low prices have made farmers poorer and hampered their ability to hire workers or invest in their farms, limiting bean yield. Old cocoa trees are particularly vulnerable to disease and extreme weather. Many farmers are abandoning cocoa for other crops, or selling their land to illegal miners.

Hear me out: the best strategy for Democrats right now is to fake an assassination.
Picture it: the President has been assassinated, the nation is reeling. Kamala Harris steps up and talks the biggest game she possibly can about unity and how we as Americans must come together and how we'll never let these domestic terrorists threaten our democracy. She spends the next four months in the public eye, presenting a strong and united front in the midst of this terrible tragedy.
Come November she's had four months of experience in the job, retaining the incumbent advantage and quelling fears about her competency, she's been front and center in the news for four straight months, giving her name recognition advantage, democrats who weren't enthused by Biden turn out in droves to prove that we won't let the "terrorists" win, democrats who were enthused by Biden can't complain about the DNC not running the person who won the primaries, and the "civility is the most important thing in politics" swing voters are horrified by the assassination and are inclined to vote Democrat to punish this breach of political etiquette. Meanwhile, Biden retires to a farm upstate and is no longer tortured by press conferences.
@ the FBI agent who's list I just landed on: hmu, the Democrats need me

“MINISTER STRIKES PESSIMISTIC NOTE,” Montreal Star. August 22, 1930. Page 3. ---- Hon. J. N. Francoeur Says No Immediate Remedy For Unemployment --- FARMS DESERTED ---- Problem is Due to Economic Conditions Throughout World ---- A note of pessimism regarding the immediate solution of the unemployment problem was struck this morning by Hon. J. N. Francoeur, Provincial Minister of Public Works and Labor, just back from Ottawa, where he attended the Dominion conference on unemployment. While congratulating the authors of the conference on the high motives which prompted their action in this matter, Mr. Francoeur stated that what he saw and heard yesterday in the Capital was not of a nature to convince him that the problem which now confronts the country cannot be solved by legislative action.
"The representatives of the provinces and of the various organizations interested in the questions which were heard yesterday," said the Minister. "seemed to agree on one point at least; that whatever could be done to solve unemployment would only be of a temporary nature, because the problem was not national, but international in its character and effects.
VARIED REMEDIES.  Some propose high protection as a remedy and that was opposed by the representatives of the western provinces; others proposed the shortening of working hours, in order to increase the number of men to be employed in the various industries, and that was opposed on industrial grounds by others, so that out of a one day conference, it can be said that the remedies suggested on one side or the other could not receive the general support of the delegates.
"For my part, as the representative of the Province of Quebec, after hearing all that was said, I did not submit any written suggestions, but I stated that Quebec would co-operate with all measures undertaken by the Dominion administration."
"The great trouble today," continued. Mr. Francoeur, "was the desertion of the farm and consequent congestion of the cities by agricultural laborers. What remedy can be brought to that evil? Shall we do, as in certain parts of Italy, where the city authorities exert a strict control on the entry of agricultural workers, keeping all the available employment for the bona fide inhabitants of the localities? That is a question to be decided by the municipalities and not by the provincial or federal administrations.”

Crisis? What Climate Crisis?
Thoughts from Arthur A Wisley…. A Load Of Hot Air The other day I was chatting with my visiting Martian friend about climate change – currently a hot topic. Don’t think of me as mad as my friend. He comes from Slough and works there with thousands of other “Martians” for the well-known confectionery company, Mars.  He has, though, other-worldly views on things. “The results of the COP 27…

[ABC is Australian State Media]
While Australia debates the merits of going nuclear and frustration grows over the slower-than-needed rollout of solar and wind power, China is going all in on renewables.
New figures show the pace of its clean energy transition is roughly the equivalent of installing five large-scale nuclear power plants worth of renewables every week.
A report by Sydney-based think tank Climate Energy Finance (CEF) said China was installing renewables so rapidly it would meet its end-of-2030 target by the end of this month — or 6.5 years early.
It's installing at least 10 gigawatts of wind and solar generation capacity every fortnight.
By comparison, experts have said the Coalition's plan to build seven nuclear power plants would add fewer than 10GW of generation capacity to the grid sometime after 2035.[...]
Smart Energy Council CEO John Grimes, who recently returned from a Shanghai energy conference, said China has decarbonised its grid almost as quickly as Australia, despite having a much harder task due to the scale of its energy demand.
"They have clear targets and every part of their government is harnessed to deliver the plan," he said.
China accounts for about a third of the world's greenhouse gas emissions. A recent drop in emissions (the first since relaxing COVID-19 restrictions), combined with the decarbonisation of the power grid, may mean the country's emissions have peaked.
"With the power sector going green, emissions are set to plateau and then progressively fall towards 2030 and beyond," CEF China energy policy analyst Xuyang Dong said.[...]
The world's largest solar and wind farms are being built on the western edge of the country and connected to the east via the world's longest high-voltage transmission lines.[...]
Renewables have a "capacity factor" (the ratio of actual output to maximum potential generation) of about 25 per cent, whereas nuclear's is as high as 90 per cent.
So although China is installing solar and wind generation equivalent to five large nuclear power plants per week, their output is closer to one nuclear plant per week.[...]
To "firm" or stabilise the supply of power from its renewable energy zones, China is using a mix of pumped hydro and battery storage, similar to Australia.
"They're installing 1GW per month of pumped hydro storage," Mr Buckley said.
"We're struggling to build the 2GW Snowy 2.0 in 10 years."[...]
The China Energy Council estimated renewables generation would overtake coal by the end of this year.
The CEF's Xuyang Dong said despite the country's reliance on coal, "having China go green at this speed and scale provides the world with a textbook to do the same".[...]
"In China they decide they're going to do something and then they go and do it."
