omg,,,, okay so coop's gonna take the role of jack in the sense that he's her first real love interest after andy and she tried like alan and there might have been another time there like prue for what it's worth isn't dating she's gone out on like. three four dates it's just nothing's sticking nothing's clicking like. maybe andy was it for her. maybe she doesn't get love after this. meanwhile, a very frustrated cupid is sitting slightly offscreen because there's no way he keeps missing. no way. dude. like. not to brag. but he doesn't miss. something's wrong.

Scythe by Neal Shusterman SPOILERS)

Stop if you haven’t finished this one please

Ok so I was really excited about this series because it has so many good reviews and I LOVED Shusterman’s Skinjacker Triology and enjoyed what I read of Unwind (which I might end up finishing after this trilogy).

The concept of the book as a whole was so interesting to me. Like is this what would really happen if we achieved perfection? I don’t know but it was interesting to think about and I liked the way Shusterman described all the things from “the mortal age”

I got the box set for Christmas but was planning on saving it for my summer vacation reading. Since corona is ruining everything my family isn’t doing an actual vacation this year so I said fuck it and decided I’d spend my quarantine with it.

Let’s talk writing style

I don’t know what it is but I really like Shusterman’s writing. The changing point of views (especially to minor characters even when it’s only for like 2 paragraphs)

I want to say his writing is almost minimalistic but still in the best way? Idk how to explain it but I feel like you get so much information without it being too wordy or drawn out and I love it

Now some characters

Oh Rowan. You big, dumb (but still too clever for your own good), loveable, infuriating, self-sacrificing IDIOT. Like WOW I have a lot of feelings about this character. He is so strong willed and compassionate and I loved him

Citra is a badass QUEEN. Honestly she kinda reminded me of Annabeth from PJO because she was just so smart and knew she was smart, but in a way that you can’t help but love her.

Scythe Faraday was amazing and wise and everything he was supposed to be. I loved how much he cared about his job and did his best to make it as meaningful as possible.

Scythe Curie was equally great. I thought she was going to be a major bitch after that first test but I ended up loving her

And then there’s Scythe Goddard. Who I actually thought was going to be the main bad guy but I should have known that was too obvious. He was absolutely nuts and evil and manipulative.

Plotttt

I thought there was going to be a little bit more of a forbidden romance between Rowan and Citra but honestly the story was so entertaining I didn’t miss it all that much

Was severely pissed when Goddard was like ‘oh whoever passes their apprenticeship should have to glean the other’ like shut up how dare you

When Scythe Faraday gleaned himself I was like 😭😭😭😭

And then Rowan and Citra were SEPERATED and in two very different environments

I was waiting for Rowan to completely lose himself and become a mindless follower but I’m so glad he didn’t

Absolutely did not expect Esme to be Xenocrates daughter. That was a solid little twist

When Citra was accused of killing Faraday I was like THESE IDIOTS

And then when Faraday was actually alive I think I might have done a happy dance

Volta’s death made me sad. He tried to hard to be good but just couldn’t 😩

As I mentioned, I thought Goddard and his jr scythes we’re going to be the main bad guys of the series so I was SHOOK when Rowan killed them all

The final test to become a scythe almost had me crying. When Citra had to stab her brother I was like 😭😭😭😭 even though he would be revived it still SUCKED

Honestly...thought they were both actually going to be scythes because I made the mistake of searching the tumblr tags because sometimes I like to look at fan art so I can picture the characters and saw them both as scythes completely forgetting they’re not supposed to wear black and not noticing Rowan’s black in the art 🤦🏻‍♀️

I liked the end. Citra punching him to accidentally grant immunity was genius and one of the reasons I love her character

I’ve started Thunderhead so we’ll see how that goes!
