Have you decided to invest in the development of fantasy sports apps? It's great! However, there's a step-by-step procedure you should be aware of. The procedure of creating the fantasy sports application can be described like this:
1. Research and Plan the Targeted Audience
Before developing your app or transferring it to a mobile app developer, make sure you've conducted a thorough study. It's crucial to know the current market conditions, how competition has carved out its niche in the marketplace, and your target market. Analyze your users' behavior, expectations, needs, and opinions to gain insights into your app's design strategy.
2. Strategies for Monetization
Once you've finished designing an application, the first step is to think about how you can monetize it. There are many ways to monetize your app. These include marketing and brand partnership charges for entry and participation, such as in-app purchases. Knowing which method you should use to make money from your fantasy sports app is essential.
3. Selection Of Platforms To Launch Your App
Many competitors have established themselves within the marketplace. If you make it easier for players, let them engage in your application. Talk about your budget, your monetization strategy, and your vision with developers of mobile apps to help you choose the best platform for launching your app.Â
After that, you'll need to pick between iOS and Android. The best way to do this is to concentrate on cross-platform fantasy sports game development that is accessible to all devices. Your and expert's ideas will lead to the best way to launch your app.
4. Hire the Best Fantasy Sports App Development Company

Make sure you choose the most reliable mobile app development business. Consider your budget and requirements, and look over the top mobile app development businesses to find which one is the most suitable.
5. Design Seamless UI to Engage Users
Your users will stick with the app only if it offers them a real-life sensation and an authentic experience. "The basic rule for app development isâthe simpler it is, the better it engages." So ensure that the UX and UI are fluid to keep users interested in your app. Create a simple and well-organized application with unique features to keep your application relevant in the market.
6. Development & Deployment
Design your app in a manner that serves its primary goal while giving users a realistic user experience. Use suitable databases and frameworks, APIs, and appropriate languages to develop games for fantasy sports. Additionally, ensure you create a smooth UX and UI for a smooth experience. After the app's growth has been completed, try it out with questions and answers.
The app will be tested to ensure it's free of glitches, bugs, or other flaws. Testing the app is essential to assess whether the app runs well or not. If both the app's developer and the user are happy with the app they developed, it is time to install it on the appropriate platform (Android and iOS).
7. Support & Maintenance
The application is needed in addition to the deployment since there's much to do after the installation. For this reason, you must contact the Fantasy Sports App Development Company, which offers post-deployment support as well as maintenance and support. Post-deployment services are essential since the sports fantasy app will require updates, new modifications, and the elimination of bugs once it is launched.

Fantasy Sports Google Playstore Policy and Fantasy Sports Laws
How often do you play fantasy sports games online? A total of around 13 crores Indians play fantasy sports, making it one of the biggest markets in the world for fantasy sports games.
In spite of this enormous audience, fantasy sports applications were harshly treated by Google Play Store.
According to the Google Play store policies, it is not possible for fantasy sports app development companies to submit their apps to the store for publishing. This leads companies to create a download link and share it through the web with the users. However, this often leads to gambling users having to think about how their privacy will be protected with third-party app downloads.
Although the situation appears to be improving.
As part of its recent policy change in India, Google has decided to allow real money gaming apps to be listed on its Play Store.
Want to learn more about fantasy sports Google Play Store policy? It's probably a good idea to take this blog as a chance to walk you through the Play Store policy update in depth.
Now let's get started, but before we do that let's get familiar with what the previous Google Play policy stated.
What Caused the Google Play Store to Ban Fantasy Sports?
In the beginning, there was a ban on fantasy sports applications not only by the Indian government but also by the Play Store.
Over the years, fantasy sports have become one of the most popular sports and have generated a lot of revenue. This is the reason why the Indian government is thinking about imposing some changes in the fantasy sports laws.
Under the Public Gambling Act, online games involving the use of skill, such as skill-based online gaming, are permitted, but games of chance are not permitted, as they are regarded as forms of gambling that are associated with gambling.
There was also a strict policy regarding the publication of fantasy sports applications on the Google Play Store. In accordance with its policy, any app that links consumers to an external website, with the intention of obtaining cash prizes in a paid tournament, is in violation of the policy.
The Google policies have now been changed and Google is rolling back the dice and reversing their decisions of banning fantasy sports games.
Continuing with our discussion of the Google Policy update below, let's dig a little deeper.
Fantasy Sports Apps are Now Allowed on Google Play Store in India
There is increased growth and popularity in fantasy sports applications in India, as a result of the Google Play Store launching a pilot program to allow developers incorporated in India to distribute daily fantasy sports (DFS) and rummy apps to Indian users. The aim of this pilot program is to make sure that the user experience is safe, enjoyable, and hassle-free.
As part of the pilot program, developers will be asked to submit applications from 28 September 2022 to 28 September 2023 expressing their interest in being considered for listing their gambling applications on the store.
The announcement is expected to benefit several Indian gaming companies that deal in real money games, such as Dream 11, and Mobile Premier League. It was previously impossible for Android users to download real money gaming apps directly from the Play Store, which meant they had to download their own APK files from the official or third-party websites.
Due to this disadvantage, real money gaming apps and their developers have been requesting for a long time for Google to change its policy so that these apps can become accessible to more people.
The new policy of Google will dramatically increase the reach of rummy apps and fantasy sports apps in general as they will be able to be listed on the store's Play Store.
Why Google Made Changes to its Fantasy Sports Google Playstore policy?
Currently, India's real money gaming (RMG) industry is a rapidly growing ecosystem, with games such as daily fantasy sports and online rummy games being part of the ecosystem. Google was reluctant to publish these apps on its official app marketplace because of the risks and uncertainties associated with them.
Fantasy sports applications continued to prosper despite the ban on the Google Play Store. It is estimated that the market for fantasy sports applications in India is expected to grow to a value of Rs 54.3 billion by 2025, according to a report from KPMG.
With the increase in popularity of fantasy sports, Google recently attempted to offer developers the opportunity to publish their apps on Google Play Store.
A Like Post - Fantasy SoftwareÂ
What Apps Are Being Allowed to Publish on the Play Store Under Pilot Program?
Google clarifies in the contract that users over 18 are only eligible for real-money rummy and fantasy sports apps and in-app billing is not available. The terms and conditions of Google's terms and conditions stipulate that app developers are required to collect data from their users such as PAN cards and bank accounts.
This is a list of the number of games that can be published on the Google Play Store, which you can check here:
Online Rummy Games
Rummy is considered to be one of the most popular and entertaining card games in India. Online gaming has been infused with this game by Indian culture, which makes it relevant to the industry. The game of rummy is a simple card-matching game in which players pair up cards with a partner, the process of mending cards into sets and sequences is known as draw-and-discard.
Daily Fantasy Sports (DFS)
A daily fantasy sports contest is a variant of traditional fantasy sports in which contests take place on a short-term basis, such as one week or one day a week, instead of over a long period. In these games, simulated athletes are selected or managed based on their performance on sports teams or at sporting events, which is directly comparable to that of the athletes on sports teams. A person's fantasy roster choice will determine the outcome of the game based on the performance of their choice in comparison to other people's choices.
Eligibility for the Google Play Store Pilot Program?
The Google Play Store Pilot has been set up with a set of criteria regarding who can enroll in the program. The following eligibility criteria must be met by fantasy sports application developers who wish to participate in the pilot program:
â      Neither in-app billing nor paid apps on Google Play are allowed.
â      It is necessary to enforce rules in order to prevent the use of the application in restricted areas where it is prohibited.
â      It would be very inappropriate if the app redirected the users to external gambling sites or money-gaming websites.
â      In order to prevent access to this application by users under the age of 18, it must be made age-restricted.
â      User information, such as bank account numbers and PAN numbers, must be collected by the fantasy application.
â      It is essential that the application is accompanied by a customer support service to deal with the queries and complaints of its users.
â      There may be a lot of dangers associated with DFS and rummy, and apps should provide information about responsible gaming and warn users of these dangers.
â      Apps must be developed with a focus on Indian audiences only.
â      There should be strict adherence to all applicable Indian laws, regulations, and codes of conduct for the app to be considered a success.
What do You need to do to Participate in the Google Pilot Program?
If you feel confident that you qualify for the Google Pilot program, then you are ready to submit your proposal for participation in the Google Pilot program. Here is how you can become a part of the Google Pilot program:
â      First of all, you need to make sure that you head over to Google Application Form and fill form with the required information.
â      Participants in the pilot program will adhere to Google Play policies along with the program's terms and conditions. An acceptance of the "Google Play Pilot Program for DFS and Rummy Apps Terms and Conditions." is required before you can proceed with your application.
Upon submitting the application form, Google will begin the process of reviewing your application. There is a likelihood that Google will get back to you within seven business days of receiving your submission. The application form will be carefully reviewed by Google to ensure that it is compliant with the guidelines set forth by the tech giant.
Final Take
The news that Google has decided to rescind the ban on fantasy sports applications is coming as a blessing for those developers who work in fantasy sports. When a fantasy sports application such as Dream11 is listed on the Google Play Store, it will result in an increase in the reach and popularity of the application. There is also going to be a reduction in the fear of fantasy sports enthusiasts over the issue of privacy.
With the Google Pilot program in mind, it would be the perfect time to invest in the development of fantasy sports-related applications. Mentobile is one of the best fantasy sports application development companies driven by rich expertise in fantasy app development. Let's get in touch with the company to see how we can make sure that your vision is turned into a reality.

My Favorite Games of 2023.
Hi. Hello. Thanks ever so much for clicking on this page. Happy to have you.
First thing's first: I'm a little freak when it comes to video games. I don't feel the need to beat most games I play. From Software is one of my favorite studios in the industry and I've never finished a single one of their games. This means, fortunately, that I get to play a LOT more games than the average bear.
I've written up some blurbs about my top ten favorite games from 2023, but before that here's the list of every game I remember playing this year that left any sort of lasting impact on me (in no particular order):
Dead Space Remake Resident Evil 4 Remake F-Zero 99 Humanity Dredge Metroid Prime Remastered Anemoiaplois Alan Wake 2 Baldurâs Gate 3 LoZ Tears of the Kingdom Counter Strike 2 Hunt Showdown El Paso Elsewhere Jusant Slay the Princess| Remnant II The Finals Street FIghter 6 Lethal Company BattleBit Remastered Donât Scream Homebody The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog Pizza Tower World of Horror Super Mario Wonder Mr. Sunâs Hatbox Fifa 23 Sea of Stars (Demo) Half-Life (25th Anniversary Update)
And the games I played that were NOT released in 2023:
Unpacking Persona 4 Golden Picross 7 The Order 1886 Shovel Knight Dig Lost Planet: Extreme Condition Spider-Man: Miles Morales Pac-Man Championship Edition DX Project Zomboid Quake LoZ The Minish Cap Drill Dozer Wario Land 4 Pokemon Pinball Resident Evil Revelations Summer of â58 Trackmania TwinCop We Were Here Visage Cursed Halo CE Half-Life 2 (I probably play this once per year) Witch Hunt Red Dead Redemption 2 Cyberpunk 2077 Borderlands 3 Brutal Legend Cultic Slay the Spire PUBG Rez Infinite Batman Arkham City Alan Wake Alan Wake: American Nightmare Max Payne LoZ: Majoraâs Mask 3DS Metroid Prime Metroid Prime 2 Tunic Everhood Final Fantasy VII Final Fantasy VII Remake GOODBYE WORLD Yakuza: Like a Dragon Critters for Sale Dome Keeper Phasmophobia Hades Nintendo Switch Sports
Now that you understand the kind of freak you're dealing withâŚ
Let's dive into my top ten favorite games from this objectively fucked up year.
10. El Paso Elsewhere Developed by Texas indie studio Strange Scaffold, El Paso Elsewhere is a Max Payne-clone with vampires, an opinionated narrator, and lots and lots of bullet time. As a small studio punching well above their weight class, Strange Scaffold leans into abstract, PlayStation 1 minimalism when it comes to visuals and pairs them with a soundtrack that will make your hands sweat. The vibes are here and they're ready for the end of the world. I'm personally also a big fan of everything this studio stands for.
9. Mr. Sun's Hatbox I want you to imagine Metal Gear Solid V. Now I want you to imagine that game as a 2D, level-based, slapstick platformer you can play with up to three friends. If you think that sounds stupid, you'd be right. And it's beautiful. As you build up a secret army of soldiers with various skills (and disorders), you'll start to develop *favorites*. This game constantly asks if you're willing to send those favorites on a harrowing mission and risk losing them forever⌠or if you'd rather send an idiot you recently captured who blinks constantly and can't kill anyone without fainting.
8. Dredge Every year I feel like I find one game that falls into the âjust one more roundâ category, and baby⌠Dredge was it for 2023. As a weary fisherman in strange waters, you'll make the most out of your 12 measly hours of sunlight only for your daily voyages to inevitably pull you into the darkness of night, and night is when things get weird. Rocks emerge from the fog that you swear weren't there before, your equipment malfunctions, and you're pretty sure you just saw something in the water⌠something big. Despite only containing a small collection of islands, the world of Dredge manages to feel vast - perhaps vast enough to swallow you whole.
7. Resident Evil 4 Remake I was curious to see what sort of changes would be made to the timeless classic and father of modern 3rd person shooters, Resident Evil 4. I wasn't let down. RE4 Remake takes all the things that didn't age well about the original, tossed them out, and replaced them with only good things. And MORE things! It's campy, fun, and better than a game of bingo.
6. Jusant I really feel like this one didn't get the recognition it deserves. Jusant is a rock climbing game that combines the quiet contemplation of Journey with the mechanical specificity of Death Stranding. Unlike Death Standing, though, there is very little story to interrupt your flow. There are plenty of collectible bits to find for those curious to learn more about what happened before the events of the game, but the environmental storytelling does most of the heavy lifting. For me, the joy of the game comes from how it feels. Right trigger controls your right hand grip, and left trigger controls left hand grip. Plan your route, manage your stamina, and climb high above the clouds in search of answers.
5. F-Zero 99 This. Shit. Slaps. I've never been a big F-Zero guy, but this MADE me one. The âbattle royaleâ, 99 player format is the perfect fit for the ruthless, high octane world of the game. Races last about three minutes, and friend, they are the most intense, white-knuckled three minutes of your life. The decision to make your boost meter the same as your health meter started in F-Zero 64 (I believe), and it is so much more HARROWING in this game when another player could side-swipe you mere meters from the finish line and blow you to bits. Sadly it's only playable via Switch Online, but it made me cheer, laugh, and scream enough this year to earn a spot in my top 5.
4. Alan Wake 2 Remedy makes weird games that also manage to exist in the AAA space and for that I will forever love them. Although Alan Wake 2 resembles a 3rd person shooter survival horror, I'd honestly say it's more of a narrative game than anything else. There's sidequests, there's puzzles, there's upgradeable skills, but at the end of the day the characters, world, and story are what kept me playing. If you haven't checked them out recently, you should definitely watch a story recap of the original games before diving into this sequel, but the wild swings for the fences this game takes are well worth that small price of admission. There's a god damn musical number, for Christ's sake.
3. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom I've really got nothing to say about this game that most people don't already know. It's incredible. The fact that Nintendo made a game that redefined an entire genre and then made a SEQUEL to it that ups the ante is remarkable. To be honest, I've only cleared the Rito, Zora, and Goron cities. I got a bit tired of exploring the depths and guiding Koroks to their friends, but I can't deny the sheer level of complexity and polish on display here. I saw someone on TikTok build a functioning Mecha Godzilla in this game. Good God. I've heard that the ending of this game is one of the best in the franchise, and if I'd seen it this year then it may have wound up higher on my list, but for the time being I'll continue picking up this masterpiece from time to time, chipping away at it until the day comes that I can finally smack the tits off thicc Ganondorf.
2. Half-Life (25th Anniversary Update) I know I'm gonna get shit for this, but I don't care. This year was the 25th anniversary of Half-Life and Valve released an update that made playing it (and it's online Death Match) much more accessible. I threw it on my Steam Deck out of curiosity, expecting to play for 20 minutes. I could not put it down. It is unbelievable how modern this game still feels. I simply had so much fun sprinting through the corridors of Black Mesa with a dozen weapons strapped to my back, blasting aliens and military Spec-Op chumps as a 24(?!) year old theoretical physicist.
1. Baldur's Gate III This game is fucked up, man. The sheer amount of writing in this game scares me. We can all talk about how BIG this game is, it deserves it, but the thing BG3 does better than any other role playing game I have ever experienced is actually encourage roleplaying. I've played through Act I four times now, with four different groups of friends, and it has felt fresh every time. I have seen the same events play out in so many different ways that it boggles the mind, but in every one of those play sessions I see players asking themselves âWhat would my lil guy do here?â rather than "what is the best thing to do here?" The game rewards players constantly for just trying shit and the D&D 5e rule set means playing like the character you said you were from the start leads to frequent Points of Inspiration. Maybe one day I'll see the end of this story (probably not), but I don't have to in order to feel a connection with BG3's world, characters, and most impressively, the characters I made myself.
Honorable Mentions for 2023
5. Dave the Diver 4. Homebody 3. Sea of Stars 2. Humanity 1. Super Mario Wonder
Top 5 Favorites NOT from 2023
5. Metroid Prime 4. Final Fantasy VII Remake 3. Cursed Halo (Halo CE Mod) 2. Red Dead Redemption 2 1. Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask (3DS)
Games I didn't have a chance to play from 2023 but still want to when I find more time...

Get to Know Me Tag
Tagged by the feisty @lurkingshan, thanks Shan!
Do you make your bed?
Kinda. After my divorce, I bought lovely new bedding and happily made my bed every morning for like a year. Then I got lazy. I sorta half-ass it, where I fluff my pillows and pull up sheets and straighten the blankets and bed spread, but it's not photo-worthy or anything.
Whatâs your favorite number?
3. I like triads and trinities. In fact, I named my first dog Trinity. And I had three children!
What is your job?
Iâm an author. I have 4 non-fiction books published under my given name and 15 fiction books published under a pseudonym. Many of my books were best sellers. Despite this fact, it is not enough to pay the bills. So I supplement my income with speaking engagements, teaching classes, and running a handful of websites, one of which is a wholesale distribution platform for artisanal imported foods. Basically, I'm self-employed and keep myself busy doing anything that interests me.
If you could go back to school, would you?
No. While I love learning and don't mind taking the occasional class to be introduced to a cool skill (like making stained glass!), I absolutely refuse to do any more higher education than I already have. I was sorta super nerdy at school because of an eidetic memory, so I collected degrees in Biblical Studies, Philosophy, Greek, Linguistics, and Russian Literature before I finally realized I didn't want to be a perpetual student.
Can you parallel park?
Nope. I learned how to do it to get my Driver's License over 30 years ago and have literally never had to use the skill since.
A job you had that would surprise people?
Hmmm. My job-jobs were all pre-children so people are surprised when they find out I ever had any since my last one was decades ago. But I didn't just have a few, I had a LOT of jobs because I finished school early and had to pay for my entire university education myself because of poor parents, and I think that's the most surprising thing. I was a waitress (14-16), a shop clerk (16-18), an acquisitions librarian's assistant (18-19), a bank teller (20), a digital librarian for a major software development company (20-21), a language tutor (18-21), an adjunct professor (22-24), a houseparent in a boy's home (24), and a cog in the county tax assessor's office (24-26). I also volunteered as a translator for Doctor's Without Borders and as a suicide prevention counselor for LGBTQ youth. At 26, I had my first child and became self-employed.
Do you think aliens are real?
Possibly, but I struggle to believe humans have ever interacted with any.
Can you drive a manual car?
Yes!
Whatâs your guilty pleasure?
Cop shows. I agree ACAB, but I love love LOVE the testosterone-fueled fantasy world of shows like Hawaii Five 0.
Tattoos?
None. I didn't want any at first because all the tattoos I'd seen on old people didn't age well thanks to saggy skin, wrinkles, etc. Now I kinda wish I'd had at least one.
Favorite color?
Dark azure.
Favorite type of music?
I LOVE IT ALL. If you live long enough, you discover awesome music in every genre. Like, I thought I hated heavy metal, but then I discovered the album Pale Communion by Opeth a decade ago and loved literally every single song!
Do you like puzzles?
Yes, but I don't make the time to do them.
Any phobias?
Heights. Absolutely terrifying.
Favorite childhood sport?
Cross country! I ran on my varsity team in HS and continued it through college.
Do you talk to yourself?
No. I am so quiet. On the weeks I don't have custody of my kids, I have sometimes had weeks where I work exclusively from home and don't interact with another human person beyond text messages and emails. When I finally speak out loud for the first time in days, the sound of my voice is jarring and unfamiliar.
What movies do you adore?
About Time. The Royal Tenenbaums. Shawshank Redemption.
Coffee or tea?
Coffee! I used to be more of a snob about it, but I recently fell in love with Korean instant coffees and THEY ARE SO GOOD. HOLY SHIZNITS.
First thing you wanted to be growing up?
A teacher in a foreign country.
I haven't been keeping track of who tagged who, so I'd like to tag @absolutebl @juneviews @twig-tea @sorry-bonebag @stefanyd @waitmyturtles @disaster-j @cooloddball @spicyvampire and @norahastuff If you'd like to play and I didn't tag you, please do!! Be sure to tag me so I can read your post.

Lena Anderson isnât a soccer fan, but she does spend a lot of time ferrying her kids between soccer practices and competitive games.
âI may not pull out a foam finger and painted face, but soccer does have a place in my life,â says the soccer momâwho also happens to be completely made up. Anderson is a fictional personality played by artificial intelligence software like that powering ChatGPT.
Anderson doesnât let her imaginary status get in the way of her opinions, though, and comes complete with a detailed backstory. In a wide-ranging conversation with a human interlocutor, the bot says that it has a 7-year-old son who is a fan of the New England Revolution and loves going to home games at Gillette Stadium in Massachusetts. Anderson claims to think the sport is a wonderful way for kids to stay active and make new friends.
In another conversation, two more AI characters, Jason Smith and Ashley Thompson, talk to one another about ways that Major League Soccer (MLS) might reach new audiences. Smith suggests a mobile app with an augmented reality feature showing different views of games. Thompson adds that the app could include âgamificationâ that lets players earn points as they watch.
The three bots are among scores of AI characters that have been developed by Fantasy, a New York company that helps businesses such as LG, Ford, Spotify, and Google dream up and test new product ideas. Fantasy calls its bots synthetic humans and says they can help clients learn about audiences, think through product concepts, and even generate new ideas, like the soccer app.
"The technology is truly incredible," says Cole Sletten, VP of digital experience at the MLS. âWeâre already seeing huge value and this is just the beginning.â
Fantasy uses the kind of machine learning technology that powers chatbots like OpenAIâs ChatGPT and Googleâs Bard to create its synthetic humans. The company gives each agent dozens of characteristics drawn from ethnographic research on real people, feeding them into commercial large language models like OpenAIâs GPT and Anthropicâs Claude. Its agents can also be set up to have knowledge of existing product lines or businesses, so they can converse about a clientâs offerings.
Fantasy then creates focus groups of both synthetic humans and real people. The participants are given a topic or a product idea to discuss, and Fantasy and its client watch the chatter. BP, an oil and gas company, asked a swarm of 50 of Fantasyâs synthetic humans to discuss ideas for smart city projects. âWe've gotten a really good trove of ideas,â says Roger Rohatgi, BPâs global head of design. âWhereas a human may get tired of answering questions or not want to answer that many ways, a synthetic human can keep going,â he says.
Peter Smart, chief experience officer at Fantasy, says that synthetic humans have produced novel ideas for clients, and prompted real humans included in their conversations to be more creative. âIt is fascinating to see noveltyâgenuine noveltyâcome out of both sides of that equationâitâs incredibly interesting,â he says.
Large language models are proving remarkably good at mirroring human behavior. Their algorithms are trained on huge amounts of text slurped from books, articles, websites like Reddit, and other sourcesâgiving them the ability to mimic many kinds of social interaction.
When these bots adopt human personas, things can get weird.
Experts warn that anthropomorphizing AI is both potentially powerful and problematic, but that hasnât stopped companies from trying it. Character.AI, for instance, lets users build chatbots that assume the personalities of real or imaginary individuals. The company has reportedly sought funding that would value it at around $5 billion.
The way language models seem to reflect human behavior has also caught the eye of some academics. Economist John Horton of MIT, for instance, sees potential in using these simulated humansâwhich he dubs Homo silicusâto simulate market behavior.
You donât have to be an MIT professor or a multinational company to get a collection of chatbots talking amongst themselves. For the past few days, WIRED has been running a simulated society of 25 AI agents go about their daily lives in Smallville, a village with amenities including a college, stores, and a park. The charactersâ chat with one another and move around a map that looks a lot like the game Stardew Valley. The characters in the WIRED sim include Jennifer Moore, a 68-year-old watercolor painter who putters around the house most days; Mei Lin, a professor who can often be found helping her kids with their homework; and Tom Moreno, a cantankerous shopkeeper.
The characters in this simulated world are powered by OpenAIâs GPT-4 language model, but the software needed to create and maintain them was open sourced by a team at Stanford University. The research shows how language models can be used to produce some fascinating and realistic, if rather simplistic, social behavior. It was fun to see them start talking to customers, taking naps, and in one case decide to start a podcast.
Large language models âhave learned a heck of a lot about human behaviorâ from their copious training data, says Michael Bernstein, an associate professor at Stanford University who led the development of Smallville. He hopes that language-model-powered agents will be able to autonomously test software that taps into social connections before real humans use them. He says there has also been plenty of interest in the project from videogame developers, too.
The Stanford software includes a way for the chatbot-powered characters to remember their personalities, what they have been up to, and to reflect upon what to do next. âWe started building a reflection architecture where, at regular intervals, the agents would sort of draw up some of their more important memories, and ask themselves questions about them,â Bernstein says. âYou do this a bunch of times and you kind of build up this tree of higher-and-higher-level reflections.â
Anyone hoping to use AI to model real humans, Bernstein says, should remember to question how faithfully language models actually mirror real behavior. Characters generated this way are not as complex or intelligent as real people and may tend to be more stereotypical and less varied than information sampled from real populations. How to make the models reflect reality more faithfully is âstill an open research question,â he says.
Smallville is still fascinating and charming to observe. In one instance, described in the researchersâ paper on the project, the experimenters informed one character that it should throw a Valentineâs Day party. The team then watched as the agents autonomously spread invitations, asked each other out on dates to the party, and planned to show up together at the right time.
WIRED was sadly unable to re-create this delightful phenomenon with its own minions, but they managed to keep busy anyway. Be warned, however, running an instance of Smallville eats up API credits for access to OpenAI's GPT-4 at an alarming rate. Bernstein says running the sim for a day or more costs upwards of a thousand dollars. Just like real humans, it seems, synthetic ones donât work for free.
