The character designs are generally not a problem in the facial department. They are generally a problem primarily for the fact that, hmm. How do I say this.

It’s fine to draw tits and ass, but tits and ass generally obey the laws of physics (as do the clothes atop them.) I don’t care if you want to make a character’s tits the size of their head as long as you’re willing to work with the physics of the material they’re wearing on top— multi-layered thick silk and linen simply do not allow them to flop around like polyester and other stretchy materials do (or to show nipple through clothing.) Design choices like these make the clothing— one of the most distinctive aspects of Touhou— seem like an afterthought, which is unfortunate.

I also think they’re not responsible for Fantasy Kaleidoscope’s popularity. A Summer Day’s Dream is less popular because it’s short and unfinished. Hifuu Club Activity Record is about the Hifuu Club, already a much less popular aspect of Touhou in the Western fandom; it’s extremely new, so unlike Memories of Phantasm, it’s not got the word of mouth circulating for over a decade; and it’s full of the creators’ OCs and brand new stories, which while not necessarily bad in a vacuum (though don’t get me started on the actual execution of Hifuu Club Activity Record) is naturally going to attract fewer people who want a “Touhou anime." People who want a Touhou anime ultimately want to see the stuff they're already interested in animated, not things that they are unfamiliar with. (This is also likely why A Summer Day's Dream is less popular.)

You know Touhou Memories of Phantasm, the most well-known Touhou fanime, right? Since it ended recently, how would you have written it if you were Manpuki Jinja? (Since it is quite contentious with the fans)

I haven’t watched any of it since about 2018, and am uninterested in watching the ending. From what I remember, the writing was surprisingly inoffensive for a Touhou fanwork of the time, but the character designs were awful (and Lunamoon, the character artist for it, is a Japanese nationalist, which is unfortunate.)

Since I don’t really know how it ended and am not interested in looking it up myself, I can’t say my opinion on it; however, if I were to direct a Touhou anime, I’d probably not give it a definite ending at all. That sort of thing is counter to Touhou. I’d just stop making it at a place that seemed decent. I also probably would spend more time exploring the parts of the games we don’t see (that are only in the prologues, etc.) if I did go for the stories of the games at all; retelling isn’t that much fun to me. But realistically I’d not be able to direct an anime anyway. I have no eye for that sort of thing, and I’m impatient and picky about my own vision for things. It’s best not to give me power over a multi-person creative work effort.
