Who doesn't love a game of hide and seek? Your daughter sure does! Maybe you should teach her not to talk to strangers. Here's a hint though: she really loves the mice. - Anonymous [Scene: Zinnia in the basement of the House of Mouse where at least a dozen or so mice are running around.]

Although Zinnia was not his blood, Oswald had taken to being her guardian from the instant Ortensia brought her into their home. Perhaps surprising to some who saw his grumpy attitude towards many adults as the most notable thing about him, he was a natural when it came to caring for kids and Zinna had always been more than an obligation or just his wife’s niece that lived with them. Blood relation or not, she was his daughter, pure and simple. There wasn’t anything he wouldn’t do for her.

He had left the club a while ago, taking time to run some errands before heading home. Picking up halloween candy, some decorations, and some pumpkin carving supplies for him and Ortensia to use with Zinnia before Halloween arrived. He was just getting back out to his car and preparing to head home when the text came through.

It took a moment for him to process what the message meant. To realize Zinnia was not with her mother and not with a babysitter. To realize she was in trouble. He didn’t want to believe it…

But he couldn’t afford not to. 

He was behind the wheel of his car in a second, frantically jamming his keys in the ignition and preparing to pull out and head back towards the club. At least one blessing among this cruel joke was that she was in a place he’d recognize anywhere. She was in a place he could get to her. 

As he pulled out, he frantically pressed the bluetooth calling button near his dashboard, listening impatiently as it rang on the other end of the line. 

“Come on, Ortensia.” He muttered, trying to concentrate enough to keep his eyes on the road in front of him. “Pick up….”
