Based on the poll, it looks like we'll be fundraising for Ukraine for this first event!

I've been looking into Ukrainian charities and places to donate, and so far these look promising:

Hospitallers - a volunteer organization of paramedics who work on the battlefields in Ukraine to save lives

Superhumans Center - a rehabilitation center that provides wounded Ukrainians with prosthetic limbs

UNHCR - the United Nations' refugee organization has a place where you can donate specifically for those helping Ukrainian refugees

CARE - this international group has a branch for providing critical aid in response to the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine

The Olena Zelenska Foundation - founded by the First Lady, this foundation mostly focuses on medical, humanitarian, and educational aid across the country.

Since this upcoming Gachapon will likely be a small event (our goal is to raise $500 in donations), we'll most likely pick 1-3 of these to fundraise for.

All charities featured as part of this event will be thoroughly vetted, but until then, if anyone has any feedback or information on any of these 5 charities, please provide that in the notes! It would be very good to know if any of these are disreputable or inefficient, or if any of these is especially good or helpful.

What is this event?

An opportunity for people to create fanworks to raise money for Ukraine! 

When does it take place? 

The week of March 16-22, 2025.  

Isn’t it illegal to sell fanworks? 

Selling fanworks can be a grey area, but luckily that’s not what’s happening here!  People will donate money to verified charities, and based on the amount donated, words or pictures will come out of the Gachapon.  None of the creators receive any of this money; it’s solely for charity. 

Why a Gachapon? 

When you spin a Gachapon, you insert a certain amount of money and a random item comes out.  Here, each donation of $5 gets you 5 spins of the Gachapon, and each of your 5 items might be 100 words of a WIP or a quick sketch of something from a fandom. 

What’s the charity? 

Right now there are 5 potential options that we're working on narrowing down. They are all to help with the humanitarian crisis ongoing in Ukraine.

What if I donate a ton of money but it all goes toward a WIP I’m not interested in? 

While the things you personally Gacha will be random, the process ensures that each WIP gets a roughly equal amount of updates.  This means that every WIP will be updated at least once before any of them are updated twice.  The order of updates is random, but every dollar helps get you closer to an update on the WIP you’re most interested in.  

I can’t donate money but I want to help. 

Do you write or draw?  The Gachapon is in need of more fic writers and fanartists to help produce content!  

What do writers have to do? 

Sign up anywhere from 1-3 of your WIPs (Works In Progress) with their fandom(s) and a quick summary each. 

During the week of March 16-22, every time someone Gachas one of your WIPs, you’ll receive a notification through your chosen means of receiving pings.  This will tell you which WIP to update. 

Each time you receive a ping, post the next 100 words of the chosen WIP on tumblr, or send it via submission or email.  If you post it, remember to tag this blog! 

What do artists have to do? 

Sign up anywhere from 1-3 fandom things you’d like to draw, whether that’s a character, thing, or relationship. 

During the week of March 16-22, every time someone Gachas one of your drawing topics, you’ll receive a notification through your chosen means of receiving pings.  This will tell you what to draw next. 

Each time you receive a ping, post a quick sketch featuring part of your chosen topic.  This could be the character’s face from a different angle, or part of their outfit, or a reasonably small part of them that’s still recognizable.  (If you choose a character that’s easy enough to draw, feel free to draw their entirety)  Each sketch should be unique! 

If I’m a writer, can I write stuff in advance? 

Yes!  The only requirements are that anything you post for the Gachapon has to be previously unposted elsewhere, and that following the Gachapon, you won’t post any continuations of your 1-3 WIP(s) until the next Gachapon.  That way, donors are getting completely new exclusive words. 

Will there be another Gachapon? 

If all goes well with this one!  

How many words should I expect to write/How many drawings should I expect to do for this? 

Our goal is to raise $500 for Ukraine.  Right now, we have two creators definitely participating and three maybes.  If we can get 5 more sign-ups, that will mean each person will likely write 5000 words, or do 50 small sketches.  More sign-ups mean fewer words/sketches per person.
