👋🏼Every day we learn something new or remember something forgotten. I've been reading 📚"Famous Series" by Eden Finley and the second book "SPOTLIGHT" where Ryder explains to Lyric (main characters) the meaning of the lyrics of the song 🎶“Take Me to Church” by Hozier... wow. I felt I had to share it. 😍 I love you Hozier and Eden Finley for your work, for your courage...🤟🏽🏳️🌈

The Sadenverse, reading order
Green: Written by Eden Finley Red: Written by Both Authors Yellow: Written by Saxon James
purple is not significant, it just means the arrows are layered so its just to separate them.
✫━✫━✫━✫━✫━✫━✫━✫━✫━✫━✫━✫━✫━✫━✫━✫━✫━✫━✫━✫━✫━✫━✫━✫
First off, the Sadenverse is a universe created across multiple series that Saxon James and Eden Finley have either written separately or co-written together. There’s no one “right way” to read these books, so you might come across minor spoilers depending on where you start. Personally, I didn’t read them in any particular order. I began with the Puckboys series, moved on to the CU Hockey series, and then jumped into the Mike Bravo Ops series without worrying too much about the reading order. That’s when I realized what the Sadenverse really was.
While reading the Mike Bravo Ops series, I discovered two things: first, there is a suggested reading order that doesn’t follow the chronological publication dates, and second, there are over 25 books in this universe, with more on the way from both authors. People on TikTok and Reddit have been discussing the best order to read them in. I found a map that was both helpful and a bit confusing—if that makes sense. I recommend checking out ‘Steph Sometimes Reads’ on TikTok for guidance on the reading order or this map I found on figma. The authors also have a reading order on their website, though I haven’t been able to find it myself, but others have mentioned it’s there.
Honestly, I don’t think the reading order is as crucial as some people make it out to be. If you want to dive into the entire universe, go for it! But if you’re a moody or picky reader, just read what you feel like and check the synopses and warnings for each book. I plan to read the whole universe, but I’ll drop a book if the characters start acting too stupid—I’m not about to subject myself to that, I have things to do.

REVIEWS OF THE WEEK!
EVERY WEEK I WILL POST VARIOUS REVIEWS I’VE WRITTEN SO FAR IN 2024. YOU CAN CHECK OUT MY GOODREADS FOR MORE UP-TO-DATE REVIEWS HERE.
___
96. Breakaway by Grace Reilly--⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I thoroughly enjoyed BREAKAWAY by Grace Reilly! It was super spicy, fun, had some pretty good character growth, and had impeccable communication between the two MCs. I'm honestly surprised it doesn't have a higher rating.
I think the pacing was pretty good, as well, having the MCs reveal certain aspects of their lives at the seemingly perfect times. While yes, this reminded me of at least two other college hockey romances I've read in the past (ICEBREAKER, THE GRAHAM EFFECT, THE DEAL, to mention a few), it was still fun and super spicy. After all, it's only fitting that it's this spicy when the FMC is an aspiring smutty romance author.
I also like that though there was drama, it was easily dealt with. Some people might like more drawn out drama or bigger conflicts, but I'm a simple woman who enjoys a romance with as little drama as possible.
Overall, I really and truly enjoyed this one. Will definitely be checking out the rest of the series!
___
97. The Right Move by Liz Tomforde--⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Off the bat, if you're not a fan of slow burns then you might have a hard time reading THE RIGHT MOVE. But because I'm a Mariana Zapata hoe, I love them slow burns and the pay off of all of that building tension.
I immediately knew who would be paired up in this one because book one made it pretty clear and I was here for it. I loved seeing the tension between these two characters, especially when the MMC started to melt his cold demeanour towards the world around him. One of my favourite things about slow burns is that we are forced to get to know these characters first before they start to fall completely into each other. We get to see the build up and the friendship and the trust that grows between the couple.
One of the things I enjoyed reading about in THE RIGHT MOVE was the topic of mental health and how easy it is for people to hide it from the rest of the world. You can be the most famous athlete in the world and still e suffering. It was a strong reminder that not everything is always as it seems.
I took a star off for the brief moments of miscommunications that honestly felt like plot lengtheners. I know no book will ever be perfect with this theme, but since this book was so long, I think characters that communicate will help lower that word count.
Anyway, I still enjoyed the hell out of this. These two characters were so sexy together and I loved how well they reflected each other (when they communicated). Will happily read the next book in the near future!
___
98. Cherry Magic! Vol. 5 by Yuu Toyota , Taylor Engel (Translator)--⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Ahhhhh. Honestly, just AHHHHH.
I love these two so much. I absolutely cannot. Also, LOVE the side story for his friend and his own love life. This is one of the cutest, kick-my-feet manga series that I've read. The way the anxious MC continues to grow into his confidence and his interest in his love interest is just the best. I love being able to see that progress rather than just having a story where the characters are stagnant.
I love this series so much.
___
99. Cherry Magic! Vol. 6 by Yuu Toyota , Taylor Engel (Translator)--⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
That social anxiety hits deep with this one. Sometimes words are so hard to speak in the heat of emotion and these two characters are getting so much better at communicating.
This volume had me feeling all sorts of things. That is all. 😭😭
___
100. The Bastard & The Heir by Eden Finley , Saxon James--⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Eden Finley & Saxon James are a dangerous duo. Whenever they get together, I know that something magical is gonna happen. This time, that magic comes in THE BASTARD AND THE HEIR. The tension, the smut, the vulnerability--phew.
Also, I'm grateful for the synopsis kind of spoiling one of the big secrets or else this would have been a wholly different experience.
The chemistry between these two characters was palpable. I also enjoyed how the characters have to learn to not judge others without communicating with them. I loved the trope of everyone rooting for the one MC to fail and him proving them all wrong. Love a family drama in my romance books (as long as they're done right).
I don't know what else to say other than it was sexy and adorable and so incredibly heartfelt. This book also carries the message that sometimes you need to really fight for what you want, or else spend the rest of your life living with what-if's and the eternal patience of waiting for something to magically change on its own. Life is short.
___
101. The Devil in Blue Jeans by Stacey Kennedy--⭐️⭐️⭐️
Ah, this book was fun for what it was. If I think too much about the story, I'd probably be lowering the rating. But it was a story I needed when I was on the verge of a reading slump. Was it memorable? Not really. Was it a bit silly and over the top? Yes, but it was fun and I'm definitely wanting to read the rest of the series. It honestly read like the Harlequin book that it is.
The friendship was sweet and the romance had some cute moments! Wasn't the biggest fan of the trope at the end and the...sacrificial lamb for the FMC's character growth moment. LOL that was so weird.
My biggest gripe though, and the story itself has absolutely nothing to do with this, was the audiobook narrator. Omg her voicing was GRATING. Especially when she did the voices for the friends. I know people can't help the way they talk, but if it wasn't for the story, I probably would have put this book down.
Anyway, read this for the fun Harlequin vibes. I will say, however, that you should definitely check out the trigger warnings before reading!
___
102. My Love Mix Up! Vol. 4 by Wataru Hinekure (writer) , Aruko (Illustrator) , Jan Cash (Translator)--⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
These two are so young and have so much to grow. I'm so excited to see it happen because they're so adorable.
I'm writing a bunch of reviews today and the theme seems to be "communication" and this volume deals heavily with that topic (and how important it can be). I love these two together because they seem to balance each other out. One is slightly immature when it comes to his feelings and the other is...a bit dense. I love them both regardless and I can't wait to see their growth.
Also, we got to learn more about both characters and some of the personality traits are starting to make more sense.
AND the cute friends who I just know are growing closer and closer. Will definitely pick up the next volume soon!
___
103. Phoenix Chosen by Ashe Moon--⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
How absolutely dare you leave us hanging, Ashe Moon? That ending was criminal.
I was both surprised and not surprised by how much I enjoyed this? It reminded me a bit of BRO & THE BEAST mixed with BOUND TO THE BATTLE GOD. It had similar vibes of the former but had the build up and slight length of the latter. The slight slow burn of the two characters falling for each other was refreshing because it wasn't immediate spice city. I liked seeing the characters grow and get closer and build that trust that comes with the sort of connection.
Loved the concept too because I'm a sucker for this alternate worlds/portal magic romances full of road trips and reluctant romance.
Will wait for the next book with bated breaths.
___
104. Beyond the Sea by Keira Andrews--⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
There's something about survival romance books that just hook me and don't let me go until the very end. Could this have used a bit of editing? Maybe. Did I still devour the absolute shit out of this beautiful book? Also yes.
I loved this story. I loved it so much. I KNOW I will crave a re-read of this book in the future. It's not a mind-blowing book, but I loved the themes and tropes explored in the story. The connection between the characters was sweet and their love for each other felt palpable by the end of the book.
I realized that I had read another book by Keira Andrews and had completely forgotten and knowing how much I enjoyed that book, I'm not surprised by my enjoyment of this one.
Ugh, I loved this so much.
___
105. Wed to the Omega by Ashe Moon--⭐️⭐️⭐️
Ah, this silly and quick read. Was it perfect? Not at all, but I had fun! Reading those into the reviews, I saw that this was Moon's debut and honestly, it kind of makes sense. The romance was a little too quick and that major situation at the end was over a little too quickly, I would have loved to see the romance develop a little more organically.
I did find it a little contradictory how one of the MCs was okay with certain things happening and interfering with his life goals. While I'm happy he was happy, I guess I expected a little more resistance? Especially since his goals were a huge motivator for why he was the way he was.
Overall, this book makes me want to read the rest of the series.
___
106. Cherry Magic! Vol. 7 by Yuu Toyota , Taylor Engel (Translator)--⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I'm always amazed by how quick some of these relationships are, but I also know that time moves at a weird pace on these stories. Regardless, I was so happy and giddy while reading this one and the new steps this couple took!!! I love their love!
Also, these reviews won't be long because I binged these next few volumes and I don't want to give away spoilers!
___
107. Cherry Magic! Vol. 8 by Yuu Toyota , Taylor Engel (Translator)--⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I loved seeing the roles being reversed in this one and seeing the once shy and awkward MC taking on such a caring and loving role. One of the reasons why I like this couple so much is how one brings out the best in the other and the other helps validate the other's feelings.
Although we didn't get to see the second adorable couple-to-be in this volume, we did get to see the main couple pass another important milestone in their relationship! Which also included the exploration of their feelings and the importance of communication.
Love them all so much.
___
108. Cherry Magic! Vol. 9 by Yuu Toyota , Taylor Engel (Translator)--⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Volume 9 gave us a big chunk of the second couple's storyline and I love them, too. Especially in how the character growth has made them into better characters. I also love their ability to be vulnerable.
We did get to see the main couple as they explored new potential apartments, which introduces a mild hint into how the rest of the world around the couple will react to them being a gay couple. I've been curious about this throughout the series and it looks like the issue is starting to be brought up here as the couple is reaching the next big step in their relationship.
Onto the next volume!
___
109. Cherry Magic! Vol. 10 by Yuu Toyota , Taylor Engel (Translator)--⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Volume 10 is where we truly start to see the main couple face the discrimination against gay couples. It's not overt, but it's enough that it affects certain aspects of their lives. We also see the MC start to question how unfair it is. But we also see the couple overcome that by loving each other and also have an amazing support system of friends and family.
The romance of this volume, plus the familial and friendly love is so heartfelt.
I can't believe I have to wait until the summer for the next volume 😭😭😭
___
110. Crown of Midnight by Sarah J. Maas--⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Re-read March 2024:
This re-read felt like I was reading CROWN OF MIDNIGHT for the first time. The only things I remembered are that conclusion and the heartbreaking decision made against a certain character. I still find it interesting that this was ever labelled YA, but then one of the characters would mention the MC's age and I'd be like, right, she's a 25 year old in an 18 year-old's body.
I read this in 2015 and gave it five stars and while I can understand why, I'm taking one star off that rating because honestly, while it was entertaining, it was...okay? Not horrible, but not a favourite. The whole love triangle thing kind of made me laugh because the power this MC holds. She's leaving a trail of broken hearts behind her and honestly, good for her. She's too young to settle for these boys.
Will continue my re-read!
___
Have you read any of these books? What were your thoughts?

Review: A Stealthy Situation (Franklin U 2) by Saxon James
Rating: 3🌈 Please note I’ve got spoilers for the story below. Franklin U is getting a second set of couples and the twins from a famous hockey family , seen previously in James and Eden Finley’s hockey series (Puckboys and CU Hockey). Think the brothers Westley Dalton / Asher Dalton combination from CU Hockey which along with their partners, bled over into the other series. Now the twins…

So my favorite of the famous books by Eden Finley is probably fandom or Encore. I like the books where the guys are visibly friends bc of my directioner days. However, I decided to re-read Pop Star and start the series from the beginning again. And Harley’s life is just incredibly sad at the beginning (actually I feel like everyone but Blake’s life is a bit sad) but with Harley I feel his loneliness more bc of all the shit the others give him in their books.
Eden Finley books are incredibly fun, easy to read romances. I love them but sooo many emotions:/

Falso Romance #2 | Adaptación
by melaniegc2604

LET’S TALK ABOUT BOOKS (AGAIN)
previous posts: I | II | III
these are just my ku reads, not my library rentals or purchases; i’ll come back to those at another time.
___________________________________________
aj sherwood, jocelynn drake
scales n spells (series)
embers
this is the fifth and supposedly last book in the scales n spells series, an lgbtq+ romance series with lots of fantasy and adventure elements - in the form of dragons and mages - mixed in. embers focuses on our nonbinary protag, nikki (they/them), who was introduced in the previous book, and their pursuit of notoriously grumpy and introverted dragon, gunter.
highly enjoyed it.
there’s some talk of a spinoff series happening that focuses on the ice dragons as well.
eden finley
famous (series)
encore
the last book in the famous series, which tells the tale of fictitious boyband, eleven, and what happens to the members post-disbandment. this is another lgbtq+ romance series. the last book tells the story of blake, “the quiet one” turned action movie star as he tries to expand his acting repertoire by taking a role in a queer rom-com.
this was a fun way to wrap up the series.
brooke blaine, ella frank
dare to try (series)
dare you
dare me
in the first book, dare you, we’re reintroduced to bash vogel, a side character from brooke blaine’s south haven series, and kieran bailey, youngest bailey brother in ella frank’s confessions and prime time series. a chance meeting sets them in each other’s paths and kieran can’t get bash out of his mind. but bash is only in chicago for a short time. cue the dramatics.
these two, i’ve noticed, have a tendency to love writing straight-guy-turns stories. but it’s kind of cool that kieran doesn’t have the straight-guy-freakout. not really, anyway.
it’s an enjoyable series, and i’m looking forward to reading the conclusion later this month.
a.e. wasp
pros & cons (series)
pros & cons of vengeance
pros & cons of deception
pros & cons of desire
pros & cons of betrayal
pros & cons of obsession
the pros & cons series is cute, funny, action-adventure-y, and romantic. it’s got it all. professional con artist, charlie, brings together four other professional criminals and an FBI agent to perform some robin hood-esque tasks. after each task is completed, his blackmail file on one of the team members is destroyed.
while this does deal with some serious topics - e.g. political corruption, prostitution, queer homelessness - the overall tone manages to stay pretty lighthearted. wasp has a way with humor.
soulbonded (series)
buried desire
shattered destiny
alright, i am going to put on my critique hat, just a bit, for this series. the entire first book, while a fun adventure and good character background, is unnecessary and, i feel, misleading. the real plotline of the series doesn’t start until book two. i feel like all of the necessary background could have been shown in book two using strategic flashback scenes and summary segments. it would have given us what was relevant without taking us on a red herring adventure. because book one sets up the expectation that this series is about ghosts and the supernatural. book two completely does away with that and pulls in fantasy elements like the fae. i don’t know, it’s just confusing. not to mention book two ends on a cliffhanger and book three’s release date is as-of-yet unannounced. i feel like maybe this was one of wasp’s early works and maybe it’s just not as well-thought-out as her later pieces.

i read this originally because in leigh’s work, the sex coach, she had mentioned that the setting and side characters were all from the skins series, though it wasn’t necessary to know their stories to read the sex coach. however, i was curious.
dream tells the story of dylan and angelo, who meet during a night of raunchy, escapist fantasy at sex club, lovato’s. it’s coincidence that sets them on each other’s paths again.
whisper is all about physiotherapist harry and cornish horseman joe. harry rents a room from joe to write his book and in the process finds much more on joe’s struggling horse farm.
believe reintroduces harry’s brother, rhys, a thrillseeking flight paramedic. he meets jevon campbell, a play therapist who frequently leaves to work overseas in refugee camps.
crossroads returns to angelo and dylan’s relationship. with angelo’s illness worsening, dylan finds himself at a loss.
this series is all about heartwrenching stories. prepare to cry. prepare to be tested. but eventually you’ll get your mostly-HEAs.
blue boys (series)
bullet
bold
bones
blue boy is an independent gay porn studio in LA. each book focuses on a different actor, or in some cases, actors. it does have some darker themes, which are pretty self-evident upon reading the summaries, but overall these are just stories about coworkers falling in love, learning about themselves, and figuring out their futures.
lucky (series)
lucky
cash
jude
micah
lucky is about closeted footballer, dominic ramos, and wannabe-rentboy, lucky. lots of hurt/comfort and a HEA.
cash, lucky’s roommate, and rae have a steamy one-night-stand and think that’s it. however, rae comes stumbling back into his life when they’re united by a shared cause: stopping illegal fox hunts.
isha, dom’s former manager, current business partner, has a secret: he’s gay. recently divorced and now trying his hand at being a single dad, he meets pet store owner, jude, when he arranges his son’s birthday party.
micah is dom’s football friend. a horrible accident has left him disabled and forced him to retire. money troubles lead him to rent a room from book nerd, sam.
all stories technically stand alone, but reading them in order does give you some interesting character background as the world gradually expands.
rented heart (series)
rented heart
soul to keep
when rentboy and recovering addict, zac, meets liam, ex-surfer and ceo still dealing with his longtime partner’s death, their chemistry is undeniable. but their arrangement gets complicated when zac’s friend - fellow rentboy and current addict, jamie - shows back up, bringing all his problems with him.
in the follow-up, soul to keep, jamie takes center stage. recently returned to england, he struggles with sobriety and crippling anxiety, not to mention trying to find a job. fortunately, a disabled vet is willing to take a chance on him, hiring him to help clean up his mother’s home after her passing.
in true garrett leigh fashion, these stories are high-drama, high-intensity, and do not shy away from delving into dark topics. they’re really good though. i can see why she’s won multiple awards for her writing.
what remains (standalone)
after a traumatic accident, jodi peters is left with amnesia, entirely forgetting his longterm relationship with firefighter, rupert, and even, yes, that he’s bisexual. it puts their relationship to the ultimate test.
this HURT. omg, it was so sad, i cried through so much of this. but it was also one of those deeply satisfying endings because it made us go through all that pain to get there.
kate hawthorne
two truths and a lie (series)
a real good lie
a cold hard truth
the first book focuses on a fake relationship. the second book focuses on side characters from the first. it’s a bit dark but there’s an edge of unbelievability to everything that keeps it from being too much. like, it’s a little bit soap opera-y, if that makes sense. still, i enjoyed them, and i’m looking forward to the third and final book coming out in 2022.
lynn van dorn
the oleander chronicles (series)
reunion
rebound
first book in the series is about high school sweethearts getting back together after being torn apart by misunderstanding. second book in the series is about side characters from the first meeting, falling into a sexual relationship, and then falling in love.
as with van dorn’s other works, there are a lot of bdsm/kink elements that come into play. nothing too heavy, but definitely some d/s.
meet me at midnight (short story)
a horny short about a frat hazing prank really intended to humiliate everyone. beck, frat treasurer and hot straight boy, gets drafted into a glory hole game where frat pledges are forced to service frat members or they lose their place. adrian, beck’s secret admirer and reluctant pledge to the fraternity, realizes he gets paired with the object of his desire. in kind of a porny cinderella twist, beck can’t get the incident out of his mind and must find the pledge with the most amazing mouth.
it’s so ridiculous and there are so many things that are fucked up about the premise, but i do not care. thoroughly enjoyed.
royally screwed: a tale of two princes (standalone)
suspend your disbelief. this is an arranged marriage trope meets bdsm impact play story. there’s a lot going on here. it’s another lgbtq+ romance where princes - one straight, one gay - wind up betrothed. and they can’t stand each other. in an effort to foster good will, they’re sent to boarding school together, which sets off some, uh, uncomfortable events.
despite all the potential for squick, i actually found this a really good story. i liked it so much, i downloaded an extra epilogue just because i wasn’t ready to leave it yet.
trigger warnings: spanking, crying, domestic abuse (not between the main characters), homophobia
wild by nature (short story)
hayden has a fight with his boyfriend while on vacation in the UP and stomps off in a snit. he has an accident, is injured, and then rescued by UP-native, kurt. it’s a few horny, intense days in kurt jorgensson’s little house while hayden recovers.
this was a bit of a weird one for me, but it had enough to keep me going. if it had been only about the kink, i probably would have stopped reading, but there’s enough of a plot to carry it off, i think.
trigger warnings: age difference, daddy kink, abusive relationship (not between the main characters)
heart eyes press lgbtq; various authors
vino and veritas (series)
unforgettable
undone
limelight
stronghold
showstopper
these are the latest batch of stories published in the series. unforgettable is actually 14th in the series. these are typically written as standalones, so you can kind of jump in wherever you want.
unforgettable is a one-night-stand turned fake relationship. very funny, cute, and romantic.
undone features murph, a character who was introduced in unforgettable, but it’s not necessary to have read it to understand this. basically, flamboyant, independent murph gets a new roommate after his moves out. and he’s straight. only maybe not because he seems to be acting jealous af whenever someone shows interest in murph.
limelight is about a virginal poet with stage fright falling for a formerly-famous mead-maker.
stronghold is about skyler, who’s been previously introduced in other v&v stories, reuniting with his childhood best friend, judson.
showstopper is interesting in the series as it focuses more on college life at the nearby campus where a hockey player reluctantly has to take a theater class and gets tutored by a theater geek. they hate each other. or do they?
jay hogan
digging deep (standalone)
this might be a touchy subject for some. the main character has crohn’s disease. it’s a major part of the plot. if chronic illness and/or poop offends you, this may not be the story for you.
that being said, this is a really lovely story about finding love and making it work despite your illness. i found it really touching and hopeful.
painted bay (series)
off balance
the first in an ongoing series. this focuses on a former professional dancer who, after being diagnosed with a chronic illness, is forced to retire and return home to his family in painted bay. it brings up a bunch of hard feelings and the only sunny spot seems to be his interactions with the town’s fish & wildlife officer.
a bit heavy and more plotty than some other romance novels, but that’s kind of hogan’s signature style, maybe.
rhys everly
street love (standalone)
this hurt me a little but i think it was well-done. it’s about two gay kids, both who are forced into homelessness. after a chance meeting, they forge a bond that helps them both off the street.
it’s a tearjerker but it gives you that HEA.
lily morton
mixed messages (series)
rule breaker
deal maker
risk taker
this series starts with a sexier, gay version of the proposal where dylan, assistant to high-powered lawyer, gabe, hates his boss. or at least he says he does.
jude, dylan’s best friend and former roommate (also, if you read spring strings, jude appears as malachi’s ex-boyfriend), has a problem. he’s way short on cash and his neighbor’s bathtub just crashed through his bedroom ceiling. he’s shut out of his apartment until all the flood damage can be fixed. enter asa, single dad and actor making a comeback, not to mention jude’s friends-with-benefits’ stepbrother.
finally, we get reacquainted with henry, gabe’s friend introduced in book one. henry’s lonely. mostly because henry’s been in love with his stepbrother, ivo, since he was sixteen.
i loved this series. it was still dramatic but pretty rom-com-esque.
black and blue (series)
the mysterious and amazing blue billings
a quiet house
a departure from morton’s usual works, this is heavily ground in the supernatural/fantasy genre. in the first book, introverted illustrator, levi black, inherits a haunted house. he hires blue billings, who runs the local ghost tour, to help him solve the mystery. along the way, they develop a strong attraction to one another. the second book delves more into blue’s background and expands the world with another ghost-centric adventure.
absolutely loved these, 100% do recommend reading.
spring strings (short story)
absolutely adorable short about a model, malachi, who gets sick at an on-location shoot in the countryside. the farm’s owner winds up with an unexpected house guest and sparks fly.
the stopping place (short story)
i think morton might be the master of the romantic short story. this starts us ‘in the middle’ of the story; the characters have already met and been acquainted for a while so their backstory is presented succinctly as to move us immediately into the conflict: the protag wants his caretaker and love interest to stay even though he no longer needs a caretaker. she does a really great job of getting us invested in their romance and tragedy. i loved this little short.
best love (short story)
best friends to lovers!! noah and sage’s feelings finally come to the fore when a dating app matches them up on a blind date. they decide to show each other their ideal date.
riley hart
beautiful and terrible things (standalone)
joey and gage met when they were seven years old, opposites in almost every way, but the best of friends regardless. when they were seventeen, they fell in love. just before graduation, something terrible happens. joey and gage don’t see each other again for ten years, and when they do, they are both changed by the tragic events that befell them. but perhaps they can finally begin to heal.
another story that hurts so good.
trigger warnings: childhood physical and verbal abuse, some violence, depression, and anxiety

Synopsis:
Soren:
You know what’s not fun? Going on a Fiji vacation with four other couples. Especially when recently single.
What’s even worse is when a past hook-up arrives unannounced.
Not only do we have a history, but he’s ten years younger and a famous rock star. Most importantly, he’s my friend’s little brother.
Being trapped on an island with Jet Jackson is going to be sweet torture because all I want is another chance. I just don’t think he’s going to give it to me.
Jet:
You know what’s not fun? Escaping one guy who broke my heart only to run into another.
Being on the road for three years has left me exhausted. The last thing I want is for Caleb ‘Soren’ Sorensen to try for round two.
I can’t fight my draw to him. I’ve never been able to.
I’m suddenly back to being the naïve kid who stupidly lusted after a hockey player.
All I can think is if I let Soren get close, I’ll walk away from this vacation with a double broken heart.

Excerpt
Jet stares down at his hands as he plays the guitar effortlessly. When he starts singing, it’s soft and he still doesn’t raise his head.
It takes a couple of lines to realize it’s a slower version of that pop song “Someone Else’s Perfect” by Eleven.
The song completely transforms coming out of Jet’s mouth. It’s no longer a teenybopper love song, but one of heartbreak and angst. I guess I’ve never listened to the lyrics before.
Under your spell,
Living in hell,
You say I’m perfect,
Too good to be someone’s reject,
But that’s what you did when you walked away,
You left me to find myself
Something niggles at me. Whether it’s the way he’s singing it or that we both relate to it, I don’t know. It’s like he’s singing it to me. About me.
Then he finally raises his head and holds my gaze just as he sings a telling line.
You said I was perfect …
Perfect for someone else.
Holy. Shit.
That phrase is in the song repeatedly, and every time he sings it, more pain comes through in his voice. It gets to the point where I’m sure this isn’t an Eleven song. It can’t be. While Jet has the ability to turn any song into his own, this is different. It not only comes across as genuine, but the heartache and rejection make me feel guilty—as if I did something wrong.
He finishes the song and leaves the stage before people can beg him for another encore.
Only, he doesn’t come back to our table. He beelines it outside, leaving the rest of us staring at each other wondering what happened.
I’m the only one who knows for sure.
Matt stands to go after him, but I push him back down.
“I’ll go.”
I follow where he went but reach outside and have no idea which way he’s gone. Following the path down to the wharf, I check to see if he’s sitting on the dock, but it’s empty. It’s on my way back that I see movement against the side of the main building.
Jet paces back and forth, running a hand through his hair and muttering words I can’t make out, but as I get closer, I hear “Get it together, Jay. Hold it to-fucking-gether.”
I step through the row of palm trees lining the path. “Jet.”
He freezes. “Of course, it’s you.” He goes back to pacing.
“That song …”
Jet stares but doesn’t stop moving.
“You wrote it.”
This makes him pause again. “I … I—”
“About me.”
He composes himself. “Conceited much? You think you get more than one song?”
“I knew ‘Hat Trick Heartbreak’ was about me and not Ollie and Lennon.” I take a step forward. “But tell me I’m wrong about this one.”
Jet’s mouth opens and then closes.
I step closer again. “Jet.”
“Why do you keep saying my name like that?”
“To remind you that I know the real you. Not Jay. I still know you as the aspiring musician reveling over his first fan.”
“The naïve kid, you mean.” Bitterness doesn’t suit the bubbly guy I know. Or … knew, I guess.
I keep moving closer. He steps back. We keep going until his back is against the wall and my hand is above his head, boxing him in.
“I’ve never seen you as a kid. Never.”
“Bullshit.”
“I’ve tried to get myself to think of you that way, and when you’re not in my presence, it’s easy to write you off as Matt Jackson’s little brother. But I can’t when we’re in the same room sharing the same air. I can’t when you’re two feet in front of me, and all I want to do is reach for you. Touch you. Kiss you.”
“Then what was all the overprotective shit you pulled that night in Tampa?”
“That wasn’t me trying to protect you. That was me wanting to claim you.”
Jet breathes hard. “Oh, holy mother of gay Jesus.”
“I had no right to act or feel that way about you back then.”
Our eyes lock on each other, and for a moment in time, we’re both frozen.
“I’m sorry I wrote two emo songs about you,” Jet says quietly.
I laugh. “So, I am right.”
“You’re the only one who’s ever picked up on that. Everyone thinks Eleven wrote that song.”
“Maybe because I experienced it with you …”
Jet shakes his head. “No, it’s you. You understand me more than anyone ever has. More than any groupie who’s tried to explain my songs to me. You came out because you knew ‘He’s Mine’ wasn’t just a stupid love song.” He reaches for me, his fingertips trailing down my cheek. “It’s you.”
