Family Hubs UK: Revolutionizing Parental Support

In England, a significant transformation in family support and child development is underway with the opening of Family Hubs across 75 areas. These hubs, notably, represent a progressive step in the government's commitment to nurturing the early years of childhood. Serving as multifaceted centers, they provide an array of services under one roof. Specifically, these services are designed to meet the diverse needs of parents and children, encompassing everything from health to education. As such, the Family Hubs are instrumental in creating a supportive and nurturing environment for families. From early language and communication development to mental health support for parents and carers, these hubs are more than just facilities; they are community lifelines. They embody a holistic approach, supporting families from conception through to the teenage years, ensuring a continuum of care that is both accessible and comprehensive.  

The Hub of Services

The essence of Family Hubs lies in their versatility and inclusivity. Importantly, these centers are not just about delivering services; they are fundamentally about creating a community of support, understanding, and growth. Each hub, staffed by trained professionals, provides practical help in various domains including mental health, early childhood education, and home development programs. Moreover, this diverse range of services ensures that every family’s unique needs are met. Additionally, this milestone coincides with the government's launch of the "Start for Life Little Moments Together" campaign. This initiative, crucially, aims to equip parents with free resources and advice, effectively turning everyday moments into opportunities for child development. Furthermore, the campaign serves to underscore the government's commitment to investing approximately £300 million in the family hub approach, significantly enhancing the Start for Life services nationwide for families with children aged 0-19 years, and importantly, extending to 0-25 years for those with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).  

Expanding Childcare and Education

A pivotal aspect of the Family Hubs initiative is the expansion of childcare and educational support. From April 2024, eligible working parents of 2-year-olds can access 15 hours of free childcare per week, marking the first step in the largest investment in England's childcare history. By September 2025, this will extend to 30 free hours of childcare for working parents, from nine months old up to when their child starts school. Education Secretary, Gillian Keegan said: Family hubs act as one-stop-shops and provide a universal offer to parents and families to provide them with extra support when they need it. This support is on hand for parents and carers from conception through to those teenage years. I’ve seen first-hand how important it is that families are able to build confidence and aren’t made to jump through hoops, explaining their situation to professionals over and over. That’s why through family hubs, along with our reforms to childcare and children’s social care, we’re making sure that the right support is available for families in the way that works best for them.  

Supporting Families: A Government Priority

Family Hubs are part of a broader government strategy to strengthen family resilience and improve local services across the UK. The Supporting Families program aims to identify families in need and provide timely, effective support. This approach is complemented by the government’s plan to transform children’s social care, focusing on early intervention to reduce the need for later-stage interventions. The Families First for Children Pathfinder program exemplifies this strategy, offering a simplified, unified system of early help services. This comprehensive support network aims to enhance the quality of life for families throughout the UK, demonstrating the government's dedication to nurturing the nation's future generations.

I’m currently Interning at Family Support Services for Mrs. Campbelll, she’s a pretty cool lady, but you’ll learn more about her soon. With this blog, you’ll pretty much get to experience what all goes all into putting together an event that’ll have about 3,500 people in attends .. yicks! I know 😁 Over the Edge and The 25th anniversary Harley Party are two of the most successful fundraisers FSS holds and I get the pleasure of finding food vendors, register guest online, fold t-shirt, go to media events and ect .. Hang tight, because we got alot going on this beautiful summer 🌹

Safe to say the Harley Party was a SUCCESS! Great food and people. I’m definitely volunteering next year to work the event because it was THAT much fun 😍😍 all in all my internship was great. I’m so bless to of had such an amazing experience with a great mentor!

The annual 25th Harley Party event is this Saturday and I’ve been working SUPER hard helping Ms. Campbell get the event together. This past couple weeks have been me putting together sponsors/ food vendors gift bags and delivering them. The picture of me on the top left hand was at the Amarillo National Bank Plaza taking some gift bags to sponsors! This internship has taught me the importance of communication and building strong work relationships for future events

Who We Are

At Family Support Services of Amarillo, we believe in offering men, women and children the opportunity for healing and a better future when they are are suffering or facing challenges in their lives.

Our Beginnings

The organization now known as Family Support Services of Amarillo was founded in 1908 by a group of Amarillo businessmen who were inspired to start the organization (then called Associated Charities) by the suffering men, women, and children they saw who did not have any other resources for assistance or healing. Today, FSS serves over 25,000 people each year, including victims of sexual assault, family violence, and human trafficking; at-risk children, families, and individuals; people in need of individual, group, marital, and family counseling; and veterans, family members of veterans, and surviving spouses.

Our team members exemplify all of the qualities that make a non-profit agency like ours extraordinary: integrity, expertise, and a commitment to service. Whether providing counseling to someone in who has suffered trauma, providing support to a survivor of domestic violence, assisting a homeless Veteran find housing, or showing children how to live healthier lives, each member of the team is dedicated to helping our clients heal and take action to create sustainable change in themselves and our community.

 How We Do It

For over a century, we've helped people in crisis, worked to end family violence, and offered healing behavioral health services to those who are suffering. Family Support Services places an emphasis on helping Amarillo and Texas Panhandle residents during times of crisis or family turmoil.

We provide a wide variety of services to meet the diverse needs of the people we serve, regardless of their ability to pay. These services include crisis and emergency housing services for victims of family violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking, individual and family counseling services, prevention services, and a wide variety of services for Veterans, their families, and surviving spouses.
