Couples Counselling & Therapy Toronto, Individual therapy
Couples therapy Toronto - I specialize in providing couples Counselling and Therapy in Ontario, Toronto. Couples therapy, family therapy, individual therapy, and psychotherapy are all provided by AV-Therapy.
Psychotherapy for individuals, couples, and families
We all want to be carried away by love, yet there are moments when we feel as though our emotions have pulled the rug out from under us, leaving us defenceless and alone.
Do you ever had the feeling that you could be someone else but you can't quite put your finger on who that is? Someone free from fear, guilt, and anxiety? Someone who is aware of their destination and knows they are in charge of their feelings and actions rather than the other way around? You know this feeling can be trusted, but you just can't put your hands on it.
A conversation with another individual can occasionally generate this special environment where your voice can be fully heard.
I approach my work from a client-centered perspective, where your opinions, sentiments, voice, and independence are given priority. Additionally, I've had training in CBT and somatic techniques, and I use this knowledge to assist you in identifying the pertinent questions to ask yourself, experiencing life to the fullest, and taking steps towards your goals.
Together, we will decide which techniques to use: emphasising emotions and their significance, imaginative experiential techniques, paying attention to ideas and behaviour, or using body sensations to develop resiliency and get over trauma. I would be delighted to respond to your inquiries, talk over your objectives, and determine how I may support you in achieving them. Please get in touch with me whenever you'd like to arrange a free phone call.
I'm Arkady. Hello.
I'm a licenced psychotherapist who helps my clients deal with interpersonal conflict and disconnection as well as feelings of being stuck and overburdened by anxiety and stress.
I practised law in a very hectic and demanding setting for many years. I didn't want to do it, but I was stuck and unsure of what to do. I sought to philosophy and art for the answers, but I ultimately discovered them in psychotherapy, which incorporates both.
My training in psychotherapy not only offered me the chance to pursue a career I love, but it also helped me connect with others, feel secure and hopeful, and understand that my life has purpose.
I want to share this experience with you, support you as you face your pain and worries, and hlp you feel confident in who you are.
My qualifications and certifications are:
A master's degree in counselling psychology and psychotherapy is a good start (Moscow State University of Psychology and Education)
Licensed psychologist (College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario)
Licensed Therapist Who Is Emotionally Focused (in progress)
A participant in the Ontario Association of Mental Health Professionals
I also have extensive training in the following areas:
Working with BIPOC and LGBTQ+ people
Anti-oppressive work
Cognitive behavioural treatment (CBT)
Somatic symptoms
Cognitive-affective treatment
Cognitive Behavior Therapy (DBT)
Dealing with grief and loss

CBC News calls Grief a "Hidden Health Crisis". It happens when you lose someone or something important in life. It may take months or years to recover from the pain depending on each one’s mental ability. And, for some others grief still haunt them even after so many years. Here comes the need of finding a therapist or mental expert who can better help you in such situations.

I think it’s time to write.
A few weeks ago, my boyfriend and his wife broke up. It was a devastating surprise to everyone involved. I haven’t really talked to anyone about it except for a very select handful of people for fear of being asked, “Do you think it might have had something to with your relationship with him?” They have both stated on multiple occasions that the break up had nothing to do with me. For the sake of their privacy, that’s the only detail that pertains to me, and thus the only one I’m going to share here.
In lieu of this, I have been giving as much emotional support as I can muster from 2,000 miles away. Now that things are starting to settle down a bit, all of the emotions that didn’t strong arm themselves out of me in the midst of the crisis are now presenting themselves. As a result, I broke down sobbing for about an hour over the smallest little thing and those emotions just started snowballing.
I absolutely adore my boyfriend, and I’m more than delighted that I’m allowed to be apart of the healing process. That being said, I haven’t been handling my emotions for a very long time, much before I met him. I shove them down, choke on the tears, and keep moving forward until I just can’t anymore. Then I have a sobbing panic attack, do some self destruction or some self care, and continue on until the next break down. It’s a vicious cycle.
I find that I am perpetually frustrated with my life and never where I want to be. Being a rennie was my ultimate goal since I was 18 and I fucked it up. I didn’t live in the present. I was constantly focused on the future, the past, anything other than what I was currently doing. I look back on the pictures I took and remember how I felt in those moments. Those feelings were not pleasant, even at Central Park, the mountains of Colorado, the forests of Texas and Georgia, snowfall in Central New York. I was so depressed the entire time I was on the road, I contemplated suicide on multiple occasions.
But I do remember the good things, like putting my feet in the creak at Helen Hunt Falls, standing under the falls at Niagara, painting in the sword shop alone listening to a podcast, eating the best Vietnamese pho and spring rolls in the south and in NYC, meeting my best friends for the first time, a compliment from a customer about how beautiful my eyes are, watching Rick and Morty while stoned with my joust family, watching my jouster boss beat Charlie Andrews in the 2017 Sherwood Forest joust tournament, picking fresh black berries and watching my friend’s face light up as she tried on for the first time.
Yeah, I had some good memories, and I could have had more if I’d just let myself be and enjoyed my life instead of continuously worry about what people were thinking of me.
With this most recent drama, I’ve rediscovered what I want my life to be. I want to see the world, meet people, learn from them, educate them, discover more ways to effectively communicate, no matter the boundaries. I want to develop myself into the kind of person that doesn’t need to give a shit what other people think because I know that I’m doing the best I can and things that make me happy, like making amazing memories and creating lively stories.
I started aimlessly back in December with my mental health, and that seems to have helped tremendously, but there’s still work to be done with that. (The problem is that I’m better, but my idea of better doesn’t necessarily mean that there can’t still be improvement to be made.) Then I got a job and maintained my streak of increasing my hourly wage with each job I’ve taken. I took another step by biting the bullet and getting myself on birth control, a goal I’ve been procrastinating on since I was 18, that was actually a lot easier to handle than I thought it would be.
After all of that, I was planning to make a trip to Ontario, but that appears to be a non-option now. Once I realized that my trip had become nearly impossible to pursue, I began to feel aimless again. Not having a goal makes my anxiety and depression so much worse. I begin to spiral into my intrusive thoughts telling me I’m useless, I’m not going anywhere, I’ll never be Satisfied. (Oh, Angelica, is this why I love you so much?)
To combat this, I’ve begun looking into jobs in other countries that can be obtained without a bachelor’s degree. Been looking into Teaching English as a Foreign Language jobs as well as USAjobs.gov for civilian, military-related international work. The prospect of living outside of the US in a new and unfamiliar place is exhilarating. Hell, even the long ass plane rides and the idea of packing makes me happy. This idea has me looking up how to make small investments (considering I’ll be sitting on $3k by the end of August) and into details of other countries in Europe and Asia mostly.
My one hang up is my mother. This is the 8th month of this round of cancer, which we were told in November would be terminal and that we should pursue palliative care. Every three weeks since she was diagnosed, aside from a few long stays in the hospital, she has gone in for chemo. Today was the first chemotherapy session where they decided not to do it because they believe the cancer has shrunk enough that immuno-therapy may be all it takes to keep her going. This is excellent news considering her death prediction. But when I first heard the news, I couldn’t get excited. And then it dawned on me. If she gets better and can maintain her health and well-being, then I am free to pursue my dreams of travel. Which is terrifying. Holy shit.
So I’m left with the unresolved emotions of the break up (sadness, anger, grief, overwhelming love and compassion), the joy my lovely boyfriend brings to me, the excitement of realizing my hopes and dreams again, the anxiety of pursuing those dreams, and the depression that seeps in whenever I fail at something or fear that I’m going to fail.
I really need a therapist equipped to advice a polyamory, bisexual, BDSM-loving, agnostic woman.

Global mental health crisis looming due to coronavirus pandemic, UN warns
A mental illness crisis is looming as millions of people worldwide are surrounded by death and disease and forced into isolation, poverty and anxiety by the pandemic of COVID-19, United Nations health experts said on Thursday.
“The isolation, the fear, the uncertainty, the economic turmoil – they all cause or could cause psychological distress,” said Devora Kestel, director of the World Health Organization’s (WHO) mental health department.
Presenting a U.N. report and policy guidance on COVID-19 and mental health, Kestel said an upsurge in the number and severity of mental illnesses is likely, and governments should put the issue “front and center” of their responses.

“The mental health and wellbeing of whole societies have been severely impacted by this crisis and are a priority to be addressed urgently,” she told reporters at a briefing.

The report highlighted several regions and sections of societies as vulnerable to mental distress – including children and young people isolated from friends and school, healthcare workers who are seeing thousands of patients infected with and dying from the new coronavirus.
Emerging studies and surveys are already showing COVID-19’s impact on mental health globally. Psychologists say children are anxious and increases in cases of depression and anxiety have been recorded in several countries.

Reuters last week reported from interviews with doctors and nurses in the United States who said either they or their colleagues had experienced a combination of panic, anxiety, grief, numbness, irritability, insomnia and nightmares.
Outside of the health sector, the WHO report said many people are distressed by the immediate health impacts and the consequences of physical isolation, while many others are afraid of infection, dying, and losing family members.

Millions of people are facing economic turmoil, having lost or being at risk of losing their income and livelihoods, it added. And frequent misinformation and rumors about the pandemic and deep uncertainty about how long it will last are making people feel anxious and hopeless about the future.

It outlined action points for policy-makers to aim “to reduce immense suffering among hundreds of millions of people and mitigate long-term social and economic costs to society.”
These included redressing historic under-investment in psychological services, providing “emergency mental health” via remote therapies such as tele-counseling for frontline health workers, and working proactively with people known to have depression and anxiety, and with those at high risk of domestic violence and acute impoverishment.

COVID-19 Symptoms
COVID -19 SYMPTOMS AND SUPPORT
DURING A GLOBAL PANDEMIC
A global pandemic is a very serious, and very scary event. It is important that we not only consider our own physical and mental health, but the health of everyone in our communities.
Do I have COVID-19?
Someone infected with COVID-19 may have little to no symptoms. You may not know you have symptoms of COVID-19 because they are similar to a cold or flu. You may carry the virus, not experience symptoms, and be contagious.
Symptoms may include:
Cough
Fever
Difficulty breathing
Fatigue
Pneumonia in both lungs
Difficulty smelling or tasting
In severe cases, infection can lead to death.
Symptoms may take up to 14 days to appear after exposure to COVID-19. This is the longest known incubation period for this disease. Recent evidence indicates that the virus can be transmitted to others from someone who is infected but not showing symptoms.
While experts know that these kinds of transmissions are happening among those in close contact or in close physical settings, it is not known to what extent. This means it is extremely important to follow the proven preventative measures (see below).
Think you might have COVID-19?
Take a COVID-19 Assessment Test Here
In Ontario Canada if you are experiencing symptoms of COVID-19
Contact your primary care provider or Telehealth Ontario at 1–866–797–0000
Please do not visit an assessment center unless you have been referred by a health care professional. Call 911 if your symptoms are severe and it is an emergency.
How to prevent catching AND spreading COVID-19:
There is a difference between advice to self-isolate and advice to isolate. These measures are in place to protect the health and safety of Canadians.
Quarantine (self-isolate) Quarantine for 14 days if you have no symptoms and any of the following apply:
You are returning from travel outside of Canada (mandatory quarantine)
You had close contact with someone who has or is suspected to have COVID-19
You have been told by the public health authority that you may have been exposed and need to quarantine
Isolate You must isolate if any of the following apply:
you have been diagnosed with COVID-19, or are waiting to hear the results of a lab test result
you have symptoms of COVID-19
you have been in contact with a suspected, probable or confirmed case of COVID-19
you have been told by public health that you may have been exposed to COVID-19
you have returned from travel outside Canada with symptoms of COVID-19 (mandatory)
Is It safe To outside with COVID-19?
You can go for a walk if you: • Local regulations permit you to do so • Have not been diagnosed with COVID-19 • Do not have symptoms of COVID-19 • Have not travelled outside of Canada in the past 14 days • Are not in quarantine (self-isolating) • Are not isolating
If you go out for a walk, do not congregate and always practise physical (social) distancing by keeping at least 2 metres apart from others at all times!
How long does COVID-19 last on surfaces?
COVID-19 can live on various surfaces both soft and hard for hours to days. It is believed the virus cannot live past 3 days on any surface.
Hygiene is the key to staying safe. The virus can be killed with soap and water, 70% alcohol or bleach. Wash your hands often and every time you come in from outside or touch products you have brought or worn outside. Always wash your hands thoroughly and at least for 20 seconds. Regular use of sanitizer is also helpful.
Mental Health And COVID-19
TheAnxiety.Clinic can provide online therapy and support. (We do not accept OHIP although your personal or work medical insurance may cover our fees. Please check to ensure your policy covers ‘psychotherapy’.)
You can book an appointment with me online, right now, without a doctor’s referral:
The COVID-19 pandemic is new and unexpected. This situation can be unsettling and can cause anxiety. It is normal for people and communities to feel sad, stressed, confused, scared or worried and experience anxiety. People may react in different ways. Some common feelings may include:
• Fear of becoming ill or infected with COVID-19, or infecting others • A sense of being socially excluded or judged by others • Fear of being separated from loved ones due to isolation or physical distancing • Feelings of helplessness, boredom, loneliness and depression as a result of isolation or physical distancing • Fear of losing your job or not being able to work and struggling financially • Concern about your children’s education and wellbeing • Grief, for the losses we sustain in our personal and professional lives. Even grief over the loss of ‘normal.’
How to manage anxiety during COVID-19
Stay informed but take breaks from social media, watching, reading, or listening to news stories • Practice physical distancing, but stay connected. Talk to friends or family about your feelings and concerns through email, phone calls, video chats and social media platforms • Practice mindfulness. Take deep breaths, stretch or meditate • Try to eat healthy meals, exercise regularly, and get plenty of sleep • Consider how to take advantage of any unexpected flexibility in your daily routine • Focus on the positive aspects of your life and things you can control • Be kind and compassionate to yourself and others

The Healing Powers of Music
One of the questions I’ve been asking myself for a very long time is why was I put here on earth. Feelings of worthlessness are hard to ignore, especially when it seems like we have little to no impact on the environment or politically.
Writing has helped me express these thoughts; which has helped with my depression and anxiety; I know this because I have had three existential breakdowns in my life.
The first one happened in my last year of high school. The second one happened a couple of weeks after I had resigned from a long-term job (that I hated) and I had another severe one when I was away from my husband and son for two and a half months last winter. I haven’t had one since (thank goodness), but now I know what triggers them and how to make them stop.
Now when I’m feeling down, I make sure that I have a playlist running that will help to calm me down, or at least put into words the feelings that I’m having.
I discovered this technique when I was researching Alzheimer’s. Around that same time, I had been writing a treatment for New Design, a Brampton Ontario band set to release their new four-song EP in the of summer 2019. I wrote the piece which focused entirely on the topic of Alzheimer’s, but it just wasn’t right for their song, which we were trying to portray through a music video. The song is about new found love and loss; it’s about young people who fall in love and kind of want to forget it all happened. My first treatment didn’t suit the age group, so I had to write a brand new pitch, which fit the themes and the experiences of college kids.
So I dug deep into my song lists, re-listening to all of my favorite pop punk and emo bands, reviewing the bands’ press kit, researching new emo and alternative rock bands, then I watched several music videos that explored similar themes.
I ended up writing three versions of the treatment and three versions of the short film script to go along with the treatment, which I submitted to the MVP Project Grant and the Work Film Project Grant fund. I’ll be writing a couple more grants over the next few months in addition to running a crowdfunding campaign if we secure one of the awards.
The next treatment I wrote was for up and coming singer-songwriter Eden Stirling, for her song titled UNKWN, which touches on the untimely death of her brother and the personal aftermath of that loss.
We explored the depression she carries and the stages of grief that swallowed her up.
She wants to help other people understand what it’s like, and give hope to people who are also mourning the loss of a loved one. We’re still working on gathering all of the elements we need to complete this for the grant submission, but I’m confident we’ll be able to submit this in Round 2 of the MVP grant process.
The last piece I wrote was for Steph Copeland and PEI’s Russ Louder for their single ‘Who You Gotta Love’ is a theatrically staged performance involving two women with lives that mirror each other. However one of them is old, and the other is young, yet they still keep making terrible decisions that affect their lives negatively. I would love to work with two amazing actresses to make this script come to life.
My short film script “Death Of A Dynasty,” is about a family of orphans forced to flee their home in an enchanted forest that is being invaded by cannibalistic zombies. I want to re-write it so that I can develop my characters and give them some more backstory and deeper emotions.
Now I’m laying down the groundwork for my next film about being a teenager in the female-driven sport of Ringette, a game that helped me gain confidence and win friends.
When I’m feeling sad, I write in my gratitude journal it also helps me to write down my own personal best accomplishments. Instead of comparing myself to what others have accomplished, I note how far I have come. I am grateful that I have paid off my student loans, that I have a house, am in a loving marriage, that I am an accomplished entrepreneur, that I get to be the mother to a beautiful little boy and that I was able to work as an Assistant Picture Editor for ‘Playmobil ’ which is my first full-length animated feature. I am also grateful that I was able to work on ‘Reel Women Seen’ which won the 2018 Jury Choice Award at the Diversity in Cannes Short Film Showcase and ‘Real Vikings’ which won two Canadian Screen Awards.
So if you’re feeling upset, sad or angry try one of these seven tips.
Measure your own Personal Best achievements. Don’t compare yourself to others. Start a gratitude journal.
Listen to music and uplifting podcasts when you need a pick me up.
Write! Write as much and as often as you can.
Talk to your friends and peers about what you are feeling; they will give you great advice to help you with your struggles.
Get outside, go for a walk, run around, get your heart rate up. Exercise has been proven to fight depression. So get moving!
Seek Therapy. If you are struggling with severe depression, then go to therapy. It works.
Count slowly to four (I learned this one from Daniel Tiger, because I’m a parent and that’s what we watch) One Missississippi, Two Mississippi, Three Mississippi, Four Mississippi. By the time you get to four you won’t be nearly as mad as you were four Mississippis ago.
