decency be damned, he bursts through her bedroom doors. his parents had just been to his own quarters, demanding why he didn't tell them that astoria had fallen pregnant with his child. which, of course, had been news to him. although panic arose in his chest at the possibility of that being the truth, neal also suspected there was most certainly an ulterior motive to the deceit.

it wasn't new for the pair to be at each other's throats, but --- they'd been especially on edge recently and all the stupid mind games they should have far left behind had been abound much more frequently and cruelly than before.

" what game are you playing at ? did you seriously tell my parents that you're---- pregnant ? "

her confession feels like a stone's been dropped on his head, emotions one after the other fighting to the forefront. they weren't ready to have a child, were they ? they could barely stop arguing long enough to have a coherent thought that didn't just lead to trysts in their respective bedrooms or in the nearest private space they could find.

part of him wants to run away and hide until he could sort out how he feels, and another part of him reminds him that this isn't a responsibility he could run away from just like every other one that he's been faced with. neal's been evading his inherited place as his father's heir, and astoria being with child would rush him towards it.

plopping right next to her, he stares down at his hands, then gaze shifts to hers. fingers twitch as he thinks to take her hands in his, but the hesitation lingers too long and he gives up on the thought for now.

" i just.. feel like you could have told me first before telling our parents. -----have you suspected it for long now ? "

this time it's her turn to avoid his gaze, unsure of what she's expecting to find and afraid of finding the worst. she's pondered how to tell him of her suspicions for the past week now and still somehow, it slipped out in the worst way. the first person to really know was her bodyguard and even then - all his suggestions and good advice simply flew out the window. like everything else that involved behaving normally around neal usually did for her.

"i don't know for sure yet," she relents, plopping down onto the edge of her bed in defeat, like it's suddenly too much for her to stay standing. "i've missed ... certain things this month that i can't ignore and you're the only person i've been with, so was there any harm in assuming?"

         adrian  and  rosa  (  @wcnderstrck  &  @falsegds  )  .   adrian  because  of  mourning  #daddyissues  ,   and  rosa  bc  oh  boy  does  she  got  her  work  cut  out  for  her !  good  luck  to  alice   (  @wcnderlnd  )   and  bigby  (  @wclflord  )   to  deal  with  that !

" i didn't--- " neal takes a well-needed breath, pressing his tongue to the roof of his mouth. " i didn't mean to sound disgusted. " he amends, turning to the other side of the room briefly if only to collect his thoughts. on the way over, he'd pondered over whether astoria would ever actually tell him if she were pregnant and what her likely course of action would be. as much as they posed to despise one another, he does care about what happens to her and what would happen to their child if she is indeed pregnant.

turning back towards her, neal sighs, azure hues fixed upon astoria. " what's going on ? are you... " trailing off, he instead gestures to her, brows raised expectantly. " is it true ? " neal's not sure what exactly he's hoping for in that moment.

in hindsight, it was probably not one of her brightest ideas. though she’s never been very rational with things involving neal in the first place, she always tried to think things through before throwing him under the bus. this time around, she hadn’t been able to. the thought of marrying anyone else — or worse, the thought of him letting go of this marriage so easily —  infuriated her. and so she’d interrupted the meeting with those words. hoping to disrupt it, to delay their deliberations. the backlash wasn’t something she anticipated, however. 

she jumps to her feet when she hears the door swing open and sees him approaching her through her vanity’s mirror, trying to school her expression into something that looks less nervous (and failing). 

“what, it’s not like you haven’t been inside me already,” she scoffs, trying to sound scathing. her hands give away her nervousness, fidgeting restlessly with the ribbon holding her pink lace robe together. “don’t act so disgusted!”
