Falken Wildpeak AT3W Tyre Review: Key Pros & Cons for 2024
When it comes to off-road adventures and all-terrain capabilities, the Falken Wildpeak AT3W tyre is a name that consistently stands out. Designed to tackle a variety of terrains while maintaining impressive road manners, the AT3W has earned its reputation as a reliable and versatile option for many drivers.
In this comprehensive review, we’ll delve into the pros and cons of the Falken Wildpeak AT3W tyre in 2024, providing valuable insights to help you decide whether this tyre is the right fit for your vehicle and lifestyle.
Why Choose the Falken Wildpeak AT3W?
The Falken Wildpeak AT3W is part of Falken’s all-terrain lineup, engineered to deliver optimal performance in tough off-road conditions while ensuring safety and comfort on paved roads. Whether you’re navigating rocky trails or dealing with wet highways, this tyre is designed to meet your needs.
Key Features of the Falken Wildpeak AT3W
All-Terrain Versatility: Combines off-road toughness with excellent on-road performance.

1. Superior All-Terrain Performance
The AT3W shines in diverse environments. Its aggressive tread pattern and durable construction make it a reliable choice for off-road enthusiasts who regularly encounter mud, rocks, or sand.
2. Exceptional Wet and Snow Traction
Thanks to its 3PMSF (Three-Peak Mountain Snowflake) certification, the AT3W excels in winter conditions. Whether you’re navigating icy roads or slushy highways, this tyre provides peace of mind with dependable traction.
3. Durability and Longevity
With reinforced sidewalls and a tough tread compound, the AT3W resists damage from sharp rocks and debris. This durability translates into longer tread life, offering excellent value for your investment.
4. Impressive On-Road Comfort
Despite its rugged design, the AT3W maintains a smooth and quiet ride on highways. Falken has achieved a fine balance between off-road capability and on-road refinement.
5. Affordable Pricing

Cons of the Falken Wildpeak AT3W
1. Fuel Efficiency
As with most all-terrain tyres, the AT3W may slightly impact fuel economy due to its aggressive tread and weight. If maximizing mileage is a top priority, this is something to consider.
2. Not Ideal for Extreme Mud
While it performs well in mild to moderate mud conditions, the AT3W isn’t specifically designed for extreme mud-terrain challenges. Dedicated mud tyres may be a better choice for such scenarios.

Some users report noticeable road noise during the initial break-in period. However, this tends to diminish as the tyres settle over time.
How the Falken Wildpeak AT3W Stands Out in 2024

4x4 Tyres Perth: A Guide to Choosing the Right Tyres for Your Needs
Selecting the best 4x4 tyres in Perth requires careful consideration of your vehicle’s needs and the types of terrain you’ll be navigating. With tyres differing in traction, durability, and performance across surfaces like sand, mud, and rocky trails, understanding tyre features is essential. This guide covers key tyre specifications, durability aspects, and recommended brands, helping you find the ideal set for your off-road or mixed-terrain journeys.
Tumblr media
Key Characteristics of 4x4 Tyres
Choosing 4x4 tyres involves more than selecting the correct size—specific tyre features impact stability, performance, and longevity across different terrains. Consider these factors when assessing tyre options:
Tread Patterns
The tread pattern is essential for traction and handling. Common types include:
All-Terrain (AT): Designed for balanced performance on-road and light off-road, these tyres are suitable for everyday use and occasional off-road excursions.
Mud-Terrain (MT): With a more aggressive tread pattern, MT tyres excel in muddy or loose surfaces, though they may wear faster on-road and can be noisier.
Highway Terrain (HT): Built for on-road driving, HT tyres provide a smooth, quiet ride but lack off-road traction.
Tyre Construction
The structure of a tyre affects its strength, flexibility, and puncture resistance, important for off-road performance.
Radial Construction: Common in 4x4 tyres, this construction offers comfort and stability, suitable for mixed driving on highways and moderate off-road conditions.
Bias Ply Construction: Designed for extreme off-road use, bias ply tyres deliver durability on rough terrains but wear quickly on paved surfaces.
Size & Load Capacity
Selecting the correct size and load capacity is crucial for safety and performance, especially for 4x4s carrying heavy loads or towing. Adequate load capacity ensures stability and reduces premature wear.
Durability Considerations
High-quality 4x4 tyres are built to endure rough terrains without sacrificing longevity. Look for features like puncture resistance, reinforced sidewalls, and heat-resistant materials. Harder rubber compounds are more durable, while softer compounds, offering better grip, may wear faster on rocky terrain.
Recommended 4x4 Tyres for Different Conditions
To aid in your selection, here are some top choices for various terrains, known for their balance of performance and durability.
Sand and Beach Driving
Top Choices: Goodyear Wrangler AT/S, BF Goodrich All-Terrain T/A KO2
Features: These tyres offer wider treads and flexible sidewalls for effective flotation on sand, reducing the risk of sinking.
Mud and Wet Terrain
Top Choices: Cooper Discoverer STT Pro, Mickey Thompson Baja MTZ P3
Features: Aggressive tread patterns with self-cleaning capability ensure traction in muddy areas, and reinforced sidewalls protect against punctures.
Rocky and Rough Trails
Top Choices: Toyo Open Country M/T, Falken Wildpeak AT3W
Features: These tyres feature deep treads for durability on rocky trails, providing protection and longevity in demanding off-road conditions.
Mixed Terrain & General Use
Top Choices: Pirelli Scorpion ATR, Yokohama Geolandar A/T G015
Features: Balanced tread design offers reliable grip on highways and traction on dirt or gravel, ideal for Perth’s varied landscapes.
Tips to Maximise Tyre Lifespan
Given the investment in quality 4x4 tyres, taking steps to prolong their life is essential.
Rotate Tyres Regularly: Rotate every 10,000 kilometres to ensure even wear, especially for vehicles under heavy load or towing.
Check Tyre Pressure: Proper inflation is crucial; under-inflated tyres wear on the edges, while over-inflated tyres wear in the centre. Adjust based on the terrain.
Maintain Alignment & Balance: Regular checks prevent uneven wear and improve handling, essential after off-road trips.
Inspect for Damage: After off-road driving, inspect tyres for cuts or punctures. Prompt repairs prevent further damage.
Selecting a Reputable Brand
In Perth, several brands are recognised for their quality 4x4 tyres suited to various terrains. Notable options include:
BF Goodrich: Known for resilience in challenging conditions, especially in mud and rocky terrain.
Cooper: Offers durable all-terrain and mud tyres with strong puncture resistance.
Goodyear: Versatile for both highway and moderate off-road use.
Mickey Thompson: Highly regarded for extreme off-road applications, providing superior traction and toughness.
Conclusion
Choosing the right 4x4 tyres is key to ensuring your vehicle performs optimally, safely, and comfortably across a range of terrains. Understanding the specific demands of different surfaces and selecting tyres with the appropriate features will maximise your efficiency and safety. For drivers in Perth, selecting the best 4x4 tyres equips you to tackle diverse landscapes with confidence.

FINKE DESERT RACE 2019
This year the Anything Cars Race team backed by Falken Performance Tyres decided to take on the toughest desert race in Australia. In the months prior to the event the 577 (class 5 performance 2wd) Mitsubishi triton was pulled apart and gone through with a ‘fine tooth’ comb to repair and renew any suspect components, to have it ready to take on the famous “whoops” through the middle of Australia.
The driver for the event was Chris Pickert and navigating was Bryan Brown. Both come from Whyalla in South Australia and have motorsport running through their veins, however the Finke desert race was something completely new for the both of them, having never previously been to the event, let alone compete in it.
Saturday June 8, after all the preparation and travel it was time for the talk to stop and to get down to business. Prologue (basically a qualifying run) around an 8km circuit to determine the starting position for the boys run down to Finke the next day.
Tumblr media
The boys were pumped ready to take on the course and at 8.16am were the last car in their class to take off for their prologue lap. Taking off reasonably early in the day, there was a lot of muddy patches and laying water on the course however with the Falken Wildpeak MT01 tyres fitted up to the triton, they flew through the prologue lap setting a time of 5 minutes and 45 seconds which was good enough to sit first in class almost 25 seconds in front of the next competitor and 58th outright out of 140 starters.
A big afternoon was next on the agenda for the team, a full clean up and check over of the entire vehicle to ensure it was in tip top shape for the take off the next day.
Sunday June 9, the boys were scheduled to leave Alice Springs at 8.25.30am, a final once over by the team whilst Chris and Bryan got all buckled in ready for the race.
Tumblr media
About 10km into the track Chris and Bryan had a conversation over the headsets about what was going to be the best was to tackle some of the rough sections they had already encountered, they had tried a conservative approach for a start but decided to ramp up a bit and try to get ‘on top’ of the whoops. The next 25km was going along nicely at a good pace when all of a sudden the boys got caught out by a ‘rogue whoop.’ Along for the ride there was a big moment which could have easily ended the race for the boys. They continued along for another 5 km when they realised something wasn’t right in the front end. They pulled over on the service road and got out the assess the damage. The Left hand front rim was broken and jamming up on the brake caliper. The boys lost 16 minutes on the side of the road rectifying the issues, after a quick call back to base in Alice springs to let the team know what had happened they were off again.
Once on the go again the boys started catching and passing some of the cars again that had gone past when they were repairing the vehicle, at times the dust was that thick there was nothing they could do but wait for their opportunity to make some ground back. The boys were continually talking about how rough the terrain was and how was it possible for any of the vehicles to put up  with the punishment they were being put through. Probably about 25km each side of the Bundooma check point were the worst of the whoops and it is very hard to explain to people exactly how bad they are it really is something that needs to be seen for yourself.
Tumblr media
With the kilometres counting down the boys were continually catching cars right up until getting to Finke. They arrived in a time of 2 hours 54 minutes and despite the lost time for repairs were still sitting in first place in class.
A complete service/check over of the vehicle again that afternoon by the team waiting at the Finke end for the boys found that despite the punishment on the vehicle there was very little wrong apart from general service items.
Monday June 10, half race distance down with 240km to go back to Alice springs the boys were eager to get going, leaving Finke at 8.14.30am, early in the race home catching and passing several cars, the boys finally got into some clean air and the first 60 km seemed to fly by. Hitting the famous Bundooma Whoops on the return leg the boys tried several different ways to attack the track but at the end of the day this section of track is as harsh as it gets.
Clearing some of the worst section the boys motored on, really attacking some of the better sections of race track and making up some good time.  Through the last checkpoint and onto the finish line in Alice springs. The last 30-40km the side of the race track was packed with spectators, everyone cheering and applauding the effort of the cars that have made it this far, knowing how harsh the event is.
“There and Back” Over the finish line in a return time of 2 hours and 40 minutes the boys were pumped with the time which was good enough to see them finish first in class and 47th outright.
Tumblr media
The boys would love to thank all of the people that made it possible for them to compete in this event and do so well.
“We have always used Falken Wildpeak MT01 tyres on our off-road race car, they performed faultlessly at this event and have always performed above expectations in the harshest environments and racetracks we compete on around the country” Chris Pickert.

How Can You Read The Real Falken Tyres Before Purchasing?
If you purchased a new automobile without modifications and want to take it to a dealer or tyre expert for new tyres, you do not need to be concerned with the exact specification of the new tyres. They likely already know which rim size, width, profile, and other ratings will work best for your vehicle, so you don't need to worry about them.
But what if you encounter a tyre dealer who isn't a tyre expert, and he installs the wrong tyre on your car without your awareness, and you drive your car for a while before seeing that it's impacting the performance of your vehicle? What will you do?
To travel effectively and safely, you must select the correct tyre size for your vehicle. And to do so, you must have a thorough understanding of tyre size and specs.
What relevance do tyre sizes have?
First, you should know that mismatched tyres might cause inaccurate speed measurements because your vehicle will perform at a lesser pace.
You may also face acceleration, control, and steering difficulties if you drive with incorrect tyres.
Those wishing to purchase new vehicle tyres online should ensure they have the correct wheels and tyres. Those who alter their automobiles with new wheels and tyres to improve their handling must be aware of tyre sizes to ensure legality and safety.
How to read tyre sizes?
Have you thoroughly inspected your car's tyres?
Your tyre's sidewall contains all pertinent information. On the sidewall are a sequence of numbers and letters. These figures represent the tyre's size, load capacity, and maximum speed; depending on the size and requirements of your vehicle, various types of tyres are available. Deciphering this code will illuminate our understanding of your vehicle's tyres. Understanding the parameters listed on the sidewall of your tyres will simplify and narrow the process of selecting the right tyres for your vehicle.
Some codes are simple to read, while others require numbered reference indices and adequate comprehension.
Several generic words
We will begin by discussing some of the most common terminology associated with tyres. Listed below are some of the most general terms:
 Tread
The tread is the portion of a tyre that makes contact with the road. In wet conditions, the tread directs water away from the tyre to improve traction.
Bead
As it goes around the inside, this tyre section touches the rim on both sides. In conjunction with the tyre's air pressure, the wheels' slots prevent the beads from escaping.
Sidewall
At this point, on the tyre, tread and bead meet. The sidewall of your tyre contains all the necessary performance information.
Carcass
This is the essential structure of a tyre, and it absorbs up to 80% of the forces it encounters. Rubber-coated fibers are glued to the bead to maintain the tyre's form and strength.
What do the digits on the tyres indicate?
Here is an explanation of the numbers, which you may initially find confusing.
Take the FALKEN WILDPEAK AT3W 235/75R/15 109-T tyre, for example.
On the sidewall, there is printing.
1) Tyre Width - 235 indicates the tyre's width in millimeters as measured from sidewall to sidewall. Vehicle manufacturers standardize this width based on respective models. This aspect significantly impacts handling, traction, and fuel consumption when selecting new tyres.
2) Aspect Ratio - 75 indicates the tyre's aspect ratio, which is determined by dividing the section height by the width. This is the ratio of the tyre's cross-sectional height to its width. The sidewall of a tyre will be taller if the aspect ratio is more significant.
3) Construction - R represents radial plies. The letter that follows the aspect ratio identifies the construction of the tyre. The letter R denotes radial in this case. By examining the tyre's structure, we can better appreciate its features.
4) Wheel Diameter - 15 represents the diameter of the wheel rim. The diameter of the rim is measured in inches, not millimeters like the tyre's width. This measurement indicates what size rim the tyre is designed for.
5) Load Index – 109 indicates the maximum load and speed at which a tyre can run safely. Compared to tyres with a higher profile, tyres with a lower profile often have lower load ratings.
6) Speed rating - T denotes the speed rating, which is the highest service speed supported by the tyre. The speed rating indicates the highest speed that a tyre can endure.
Where can you locate the suitable tyre size for your vehicle?
Don’t worry, as we have the ideal solution for you.

Jeep Gladiator: Limited-run Launch Edition sold out in 24 hours
Tumblr media
Long before most US buyers have even seen the all-new Jeep Gladiator, let alone driven one, a run of 4190 limited-run Launch Editions have sold out. And they were on sale for just 24 hours.
Mind, the lucky buyers likely never stepped outside their front door to order their car: the pre-order process involved a dedicated online Gladiator Concierge, as well as connecting with a local Jeep dealer.
The Gladiator Launch Edition is essentially a fully loaded Rubicon model with unique wheels and interior accents, as well as a ‘One of 4190’ forged aluminium tailgate badge. It pays tribute to Toledo, Ohio’s 419-area code – where the Gladiator and Wrangler are built.
Other unique equipment on the limited-run Gladiator includes 17-inch Mid Gloss Black alloy wheels shod in 33-inch Falken Wildpeak All-Terrain tyres, a wrapped instrument panel mid-bolster painted in Monaco silver, and black leather seats with red contrast stitching.
Buyers had a choice of five colours including Black, Bright White, Billet Silver Metallic and Granite Crystal Metallic, with matching body-coloured hardtop panels.
Tumblr media
Standard Rubicon inventory includes LED headlights and taillights, an 8.4-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a nine-speaker Alpine audio system, keyless entry and start, and a rear park assist system.
Active Safety kit includes blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control with stop/go, and full-speed forward-collision warning with autonomous emergency braking. Rougher, tougher features include a forward-facing camera for tight off-road trails, a rail-based cargo-management system, and a spray-in bed liner.
Given the Launch Edition is also a Rubicon underneath, its capabilities are the same. That means it has an approach angle of 43.6 degrees, break over angle of 20.3 degrees, and a departure angle of 26 degrees. Ground clearance is 281.9mm, wading depth is 762mm.
The Gladiator also has a payload of 726kg and a braked-towing capacity just under 3500kg with the Max Towing Package.
And as you would expect of a Rubicon, there’s a serious arsenal of off-road systems to help this vehicle a capable mud and rock crawler. You get a Rock-Trac 4×4 system with a two-speed transfer case and a 4:1 low-range gear ratio, front and rear heavy-duty Dana 44 axles, Tru-Lok electric front and rear-axle lockers, electronic front sway bar disconnect, and rock rails on the cab and bed.
Tumblr media
Under the bonnet is the standard 3.6-litre V6 Pentastar petrol engine developing 209kW of power at 6400rpm and 353Nm at 4400rpm, channeled through an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Jeep has joined forces with Humvee’s AM General to produce a new, light tactical military concept vehicle.
The Jeep Gladiator Extreme Military-Grade Truck (XMT) by AM General is the first phase of a collaboration that reunites two companies whose history stretches back to World War II.
In creating the XMT, AM General has leveraged Gladiator’s class-leading capabilities and customised the truck to meet global needs for a light-weight military truck.
It was AM General that produced the original Humvee for US military forces.
GM later purchased the name and started to produced civilian versions called the Hummer — H1 (based on the Humvee, and the H2 and H3.
But the vehicles proved to be unprofitable and the last H3 was produced in 2010.
In 2015, AM General lost its bid to build the Humvee’s replacement for the US military to Oshkosh Corporation which produces the completely new Joint Light Tactical Vehicle (JLTV).
AM General identified the all-new 2020 Jeep Gladiator as the ideal platform on which to develop the Extreme Military-Grade concept vehicle, with 3500kg tow capacity and up to 725kg payload capacity.
“The Jeep brand has an important military heritage, so we couldn’t be happier that AM General expressed interest in creating the Gladiator XMT,” Head of Jeep Brand – North America, Jim Morrison, said.
“The all-new Jeep Gladiator boasts unmatched functionality, versatility and especially capability, including two advanced 4×4 systems, locking differentials, skid plates, tow hooks, and incredible approach, break-over and departure angles – the perfect foundation for this ultra-capable military concept vehicle.
“We’re proud to partner with AM General, we look forward to gauging interest and gathering feedback on the Jeep Gladiator XMT, and we’re excited about potential future opportunities,” he added.
Based on its more than 100 years of experience in the defense industry and deep knowledge of the global military landscape, AM General identified a series of parts and accessories that amplify the Jeep Gladiator’s leading off-road manoeuvrability and enhance the Gladiator’s capability to provide its end users with the appropriate equipment for tactical communications and service.
The Jeep Gladiator XMT has been fitted with both custom-built and commercially available military-grade parts to create an even more rugged truck that can traverse the toughest of terrains in adverse conditions and is ready to meet varied military customer requirements.
As with the iconic, proven and versatile Humvee, AM General can also apply its manufacturing and engineering expertise to convert the Gladiator XMT into mission-specific and purposeful light-weight tactical trucks based on customer requirements.
Whether the need is to have a rugged personnel transport carrier or a command and control truck, the company has demonstrated through the Enhanced Tactical Kit (ETK) offerings on Humvee, its ability to deliver solutions that are customer-driven and cost-effective.
Pending feedback and interest in the military marketplace, production could begin in the second half of 2020.
In addition to the petrol model, Gladiator XMT would be offered to military customers as a diesel version.
All Gladiator models are Trail Rated with a badge indicating that the vehicle is designed to perform in a variety of challenging off-road conditions identified by five key consumer-oriented performance categories: traction, ground clearance, manoeuvrability, articulation and water fording.
Gladiator Rubicon models are equipped with signature red tow hooks, Rock-Trac 4×4 system, featuring a two-speed transfer case with a 4:1 low-range gear ratio, front and rear heavy-duty Dana 44 axles, Tru-Lok electric front- and rear-axle lockers, segment-exclusive electronic sway bar disconnect, cab and bed rock rails and standard 33-inch Falken Wildpeak All-Terrain off-road tyres.

7,000km on the Wildpeak M/T's
Greg Plumridge - Geelong 4WD and Camping.
The Geelong 4WD & Camping/Ironman PX2 Ranger has just completed a month long 7,000klm trip road testing the impressive new Falken Wildpeak M/T tyres with our ultimate destination being the Big Red Bash concert on the edge of The Simpson Desert
Tumblr media
The trip was a great test of Man, Woman and Machines with a route that took us through Port Augusta, Woomera, Coober Pedy and then on to some of the greatest natural wonders in the Australian Outback including Uluru, Kata Tjuta, Kings Canyon, Hermannsburg, Palm Valley, Ellery Creek Big Hole, and Standley Chasm before leading us into Alice Springs where we spent an educational day at the Alice Springs Desert Park before a final reload of supplies.
Tumblr media
The next leg of the journey was the most remote and slowest as we travelled during the next 6 days travelling the 700klms from Jervois Station down the Hay River Track joining the Simpson Desert near Poeppel’s Corner to follow the QAA line East into Birdsville.
A 2 day visit to Bedourie (180klm north of Birdsville) in the Dimantina Shire for the Annual Camel and Pig Races was an absolute jewel of an event on our trip and fitted in neatly before the Big Red Bash.
Tumblr media
To see Midnight Oil perform in the Centre of Outback Australia, the heartland of the Country that they protect so vigorously was definitely the highlight of the 3 Day Concert although so many of the other performers delivered outstanding performances, The Living End, Chocolate Starfish, Richard Clapton, Casey Chambers, Bjorn Again, The Chantoozies, The Eurogliders and 1927 just to mention some of them.
Tumblr media
With a leisurely departure for the journey home via the Birdsville Track we encountered our only significant hiccup at Mungerannie when we lost a wheel bearing on our camper. Fortunately this did not really impact on our schedule it just forced a change in route via Adelaide to source and replace the bearings……….. Lesson learned……...never travel without spares.
As a result of our forced detour we were able to visit the Coorong (for the first time) and then onto Robe for the final night before home
Tumblr media
All in all it was an unforgettable trip with great memories, a trouble free run on the Falken Wildpeak tyres and many places crossed off  ”The Bucket List”.
If you would like any tips for a serious Off Road Trip to the Outback then please drop in and talk to our experienced Team at Geelong 4WD and Camping.

6. Goodyear Vector 4Seasons
This tyre is a fantastic choice for those car gurus who not only can tell the difference between what set of wheels they use, but also take pride in finding the perfect fit for them.
With its unique palm tree tread, the 4Seasons is a break from the conventional tyre you’d usually see on sale. While this design can be an acquired taste, those who have taken a car for a drive with this set will often find its intuitive feel is beyond compare.
7.FALKEN WILDPEAK A/T01
If you’re seeking a set of tyres that will combine your need for speed and safety, this offering from FALKEN could be your perfect fit.
While the trade-off to this versatility can result in a slight understeer when driving in dry conditions, if your regular commute involves freeway driving (and the need to deal with rain and drizzle throughout the year), this set will deliver you prime performance and great traction throughout all seasons.
8. Michelin Crossclimate
When buying a new set of tyres, versatility is always desirable. This Michelin is magnificent as it’s the first tyre to retail for summer use, while also being useable in wintery conditions.
Since most Australians won’t encounter a winter of heavy snow and blizzards, this tyre is great for those who seek a year-round tyre that will offer some extra protection in any conditions, other than the sort of snow and storms you’d need snow chains for.
