Art: Fake Blindness by Leah Artist

When I first saw this drawing, entitled Fake Blindness by Leah Artist, I was instantly drawn to the desensitization of death in my society, due to how often people die. We are desensitized to death, but it is just a “fake blindness” based on our societal constructs. There are countless, careless deaths in our society. One that specifically stands out to me was when I reached the river, and the Hound was no longer able to track me, the TV reported the “death of Guy Montag”. The media’s depiction of the death is awful, and can be seen when, “The helicopter lights shot down a dozen brilliant pillars that built all around the man” (Bradbury 142). Obviously, the media wanted the best shot they could at this staged death. The leaders in our society were trying to make a symbol out of me, in order to portray its strength. 

The piece of art, is a good representation of the fake blindness in society, because we act as though the deaths of those around us are normal, when rather, they are typically tragedies. When I was nearly hit by a group of teenagers, who were trying to kill me for sport, I was reminded of our fake blindness. The importance of human life is indescribable, yet, we place no importance in it. This is just another reason why I have left the mainstream society, and am hoping for change.
