Some of our Team attended the Pantomime at Fairfield Halls this afternoon, we were in the front two rows 😩 luckily I wasn't targeted by the cast, but a colleague was 😅 I would've exited stage left. I had a good time. The live Band, the Live singing were definitely highlights for me. WHO SHOULD PLAY WHAT, AND FOR WHOM?

On 15 June 2013 Southbank Sinfonia joined forces with electronica sensation Tom Jenkinson aka Squarepusher for a pioneering performance at Fairfield Halls. Two months on, SBS violinist and electronic composer Pierre Largeron (aka Pierre Wisi) reflects on the experience. 

As a long time admirer of Squarepusher, I was only too enthusiastic about playing tracks from his last album (‘Ufabulum’) live with the composer, even though the performance sensations as a player are felt slightly differently in a group. The live experience throughout these few days both at St John’s Waterloo (testing the ‘Monitors and Orchestra’ setup) and at Fairfield Hall has proven to be perhaps more mind challenging than I expected.

Virtually everything in Jenkinson’s music should seem natural or at least well known to any classical musician with conservatory background : Miles Davies and Charlie Parker’s improvisatory jazz is still very present at times ; and from his 1996 album ‘Feed Me Weird Things’ till ‘Ufabulum’ (2012) there has been a clear line of creation, a ‘sound and beats’ fingerprint that allows any music lover to identify Squarepusher instantly. A music critic could well use a syntax normally allocated to Jazz and classical music ("texture", "cadenza", "pedal", "harmony", "cell", "mode", "counterpoint" etc.) to analyze all of Squarepusher’s music and I must acknowledge one can (should ?) have a feeling of deep musical satisfaction when listening to such a fusion of ‘Drum’n’Bass’, IDM, Electronica, Jazz Fusion, Free Jazz etc…

I was uplifted and inspired by his actual performance in Fairfield Hall, where he didn't just play with orchestral parts cleverly fitted to his consoles (arranger: Peter Riley), instead, he gave a true performance with unique improvisatory sections, both on Bass guitar and console, that a connoisseurs’ audience came to listen to and enjoyed, as their reactions through the performance could show.

Of course I feel none of this would have happened without open-minded conductor(s!), making people connect, supervising and leading the ensemble. This was particularly the role of Charles Hazelwood (thanks to him), himself a long time friend of Squarepusher and much used to walking on the "edges » of what we call classical music.

Besides helping in questioning fundamental aspects of music making such as ‘who should play what and for whom ?’, this project shouldn’t be an isolated example of a successful collaboration between 2 creative systems (accoustic and electronic) but could be the start (at least for the Southbank Sinfonia) of a regular cooperation between two musical worlds that are equally rich.

Throwback to the @lostformatsociety #rooftopcinema at the now demolished #fairfieldhalls #carpark towards the rear of college green. I think this was summer 2016. . . With the imminent demolition and redevelopment of St George's Walk I hope in the quest to redevelop this town and attract the new Croydonians the street art slate isn't wiped totally clean. . . Apart from a few new additions to the skyline what has been built or is planned to be built feels pretty conservative. After seeing the picture of the Croydonian with the old Croydon council logo which I always thought looked really cool i asked you guys about your most iconic landmarks to start working on this. . No.1 was the number one choice and I had Ragland House (the brutalist BT tower) in this composition but i decided to replace it with a hidden landmark, the Shirley windmill. . Taking my time on this one, possibly gonna simplify it even more and have the stylistically unifying horizontal lines across the whole image like the old logo as well as trees like the crooked one at Caithness walk.
