PRAISE FOR In Bloom by John Spiegel
John Spiegel’s debut collection, In Bloom, traverses the weeks before and the year immediately after becoming a new #father. These poems journey through the complicated mix of uncertainty, anxious anticipation, and wistful reverie as they move to accept a new reality. In reflective series “Notes to Self” the speaker wades through hopes and fears, questioning himself and the balance of #family #life. Yet even as he struggles and asks, “where have I put myself?” these tightly-woven poems reveal a man transformed by his experience, ready to embrace what fatherhood requires. In Bloom explores the very particular and intensely questioning time of new #parenthood with earnestness and sincerity.
–Laura Van Prooyen
In Bloom moves musings on kinship, #fatherhood, and what it means to grow up human. Intimate and moving, lighthearted and serious, it’s a book of connection and consideration, of nature and nurture: tender, marvelous, and meaningful.
–Hoa Nguyen, author of A Thousand Times You Lose Your Treasure

When The Protest Sign Reveals A Lot More Than Intended
The news coverage of the protests outside a local (to me) YMCA yesterday missed the most important sign the TERFs (trans-exclusive radical feminists) were holding. The one that really revealed how they felt.Quick side note: While I am aware that "TERF" might not be the most accurate term -- I really doubt most of those folks were feminists in any meaningful way -- they were attempting to employ feminist language, so I'm going to run with that label for the moment. The background: The City of Xenia -- not the YMCA, to be clear -- decided to prosecute a transgender woman for utilizing the female changing room. To recap the Dayton Daily News coverage, a Fairborn, Ohio woman "was charged in Xenia Municipal Court with three counts of public indecency, for incidents in September, November, and a third incident between November 2021 and 2022." Xenia council president Will Urschel, in a video posted to YouTube in January 2023, "told a meeting of the Greene County Tea Party that if the city is able to successfully prosecute the person involved, they may bring legal action against the YMCA for aiding and abetting the alleged crime." The YMCA, in response, "has said that state non-discrimination laws require it to allow transgender individuals to use locker rooms, changing rooms and bathrooms that align with their gender identity." The organization also says "posted locker room guidelines ask patrons to 'remain properly covered while in public areas of the locker room.'" The court date has been pushed back due to publicity.Yesterday, 25 Feb 2023, three to five times as many pro-trans protesters showed up to show support for human rights (across the street in this photo), while a dozen or so TERFs protested against the policy, something you can pretty clearly see in some of the video from the news coverage. For quite some time, there were only four folks protesting against the YMCA - the guy with his cross-on-wheels, one man who kept letting the American flag he was holding hit the ground, one guy who seemed to think he was "owning" people by taking their pictures, and a single woman holding their anti-trans signs. That 3:1 ratio seemed to hold true for the anti-trans protesters, while it was easily the reverse for those protesting for human rights. There's a lot I could talk about and unpack there, but specifically, I want to focus on one sign that the anti-trans woman held. The read, "The YMCA cannot give consent for all women." (The sign is just barely visible below the flag in the photo linked here.)The assumptions embedded in that one sentence really reveal a lot. - Using "consent" here inherently brings in an implication of prurient (or sexual) interest to a non-sexual action. This was reinforced by the "keep our women safe" sign another TERF was holding. - It absolutely ignores the actual data about who commits sexual assault. - It ignores the YMCA's own policy of being "properly covered while in public areas of the locker room." - It ignores that gender expression is not -- and does not necessarily correlate to -- sexual orientation. The folks I know were all confused by the sign. Because to us, changing in the locker room or using the restroom is an individual act. The idea of "consent" is utterly misused here, and makes no sense whatsoever. I have never asked "consent" before going in the public restroom at, say, a truck stop, and I've never seen or heard of someone doing so. Even if you were thinking about knocking on the door before using an individual restroom or stall... well, your gender doesn't matter, you don't use the same stall (or individual restroom, or individual changing room) as someone else when they're using it. Problem solved. The anti-trans panic does not actually keep anyone safer. If anything, it distracts us from the actual perpetrators of sexual assault. Transgender people are overwhelmingly survivors of sexual assault. On the other hand, it is shockingly easy to find recent cases involving a church leader in Florida, a youth pastor in Mississippi, a youth pastor in Massachusetts, a pastor in North Carolina, a youth pastor in Arkansas, and a youth pastor in Virginia, and, of course, the Southern Baptist Convention's own released list of "about 380 Southern Baptist church leaders and volunteers have faced credible accusations of sexual misconduct. Of those, roughly 220 were convicted of sex crimes or received plea deals."If actual "indecent exposure" happens, then it is actually a violation of the YMCA's rules already, and has nothing to do with a person's gender expression. Problem solved. The last point is the most telling to me, though... because these TERFs have already signaled that this is just part of their campaign against LGBTQIA+ people as a whole. The concept of people whose sexual orientation -- including asexuality! -- is not the same as their own simply did not occur to them. They were utterly unable to think beyond their own motivations and experiences. And if you put all that together, that brings us back to something I said at the beginning of the month. Their actions, their signs, make no sense when measured against observable data. At first glance, it seems nonsensical, even hypocritical. Then you look at who is assaulting women, is stripping away rights, is denying the existence of others for their identities. And then you realize. It is not hypocrisy. It is projection. Sound Bites Presents the Live Music Year in Review
Much about 2024 sucked rotten eggs. But Sound Bites’ live-music calendar did not.
In addition to attending San Francisco’s Hardly Strictly Bluegrass festival - links to coverage here - for the second year running, the blog caught a few-dozen-plus gigs in his home state of backward Oiho.
What follows are capsule reviews of said performances in order from favorite to least favorite with hyperlinks to the full reviews and photos. May you have musical 2025.
Toubab Krewe (3) at Levitt Pavilion, Dayton, Aug. 16 - Listeners who closed their eyes and let the breeze with the slightest hints of autumn carry the music to them were transported to a lush, beachfront performance space miles - continents - away from downtown Dayton, Ohio. Review and photos here.
Sierra Hull (3) at Woodlands Tavern, Columbus, Sept. 15 - Hull is a solo artist but, like Billy Strings, is so in a band context characterized by shared solos and harmony vocals directed by the ebullient, ever-smiling bandleader. Review and photos here.
Old Crow Medicine Show (5) with Molly Tuttle & Golden Highway (1) at Rose Music Center at the Heights, Huber Heights, July 9 - Double bill. Doubly potent bluegrass. Review and photos here.
Todd Rundgren (44) at Andrew J. Brady Music Center, Cincinnati, April 24 - The Me/We tour is one for the faithful. Review and photos here.
Los Straitjackets (1) at Natalie’s Grandview, Columbus, May 8 - Performing at the confluence of musical seriousness and playful showmanship, Los Straitjackets’ gig dealt in all-inclusive entertainment. Review and photos here.
Marty Stuart and His Fabulous Superlatives (2) at Columbus Anthenaeum, Nov. 21 - Stuart is the star attraction, and sang the majority of the nearly two dozen songs on the setlist while playing lead and rhythm acoustic and electric guitar, mandolin and electric sitar. But he also left no doubt the aptly named Fabulous Superlatives are a band. Review and photos here.
Larry Campbell & Teresa Williams (5) at Natalie’s Grandview, Columbus, April 23 - Campbell and Williams should be playing arenas. Review and photos here.
Steep Canyon Rangers (10) at Fairborn Bluegrass & Brew, Fairborn, Aug. 2 - Perched on a makeshift bandstand near the corner of Grand Avenue and Main Street, the Rangers did what they do - and were in top form - in front of a hometown audience of a few hundred on an unseasonably comfortable Ohio night that dodged the threat of torrential storms. Review and photos here.
Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band (6) at Nationwide Arena, Columbus, April 21 - Though the band could’ve phoned it in, the expanded 18-piece - augmented with four-voice choir and five-piece horn section - instead brought a loud hailer. Review and photos here.
The Wood Brothers (8) at Southern Theatre, Columbus, April 3 - Having been scheduled to play Columbus before COVID-19 got in the way - Sound Bites still has his ticket to the canceled gig - the Woods’ trip to town was a long time comin’. Review and photos here.
Pete Best Band (1) with the Cyrkle (1) at Valley Dale Ballroom, Columbus, July 28 - Sound Bites still isn’t sure what he expected from Best. But it surely wasn’t an exceptional gig such as this. Review and photos here.
Hot Tuna (12) Acoustic at Natalie’s Grandview, Columbus, July 11 - Having played together nearly 60 years, it might be reasonable to assume Hot Tuna see their work as a grind; the opposite is true. Review and photos here.
Dom Flemons (2) at Happy Hollow Hootenanny, Snow Fork Event Center, Nelsonville, June 1 - Birdsong accompanied the early portions of Flemons’ Happy Hollow Hootenanny headlining appearance and fireflies lighted up the encores. Review and photos here.
John Craigie (3) with Tré Burt (1) at A & R Music Bar, Columbus, Oct. 11 - “I’m telling the agents - we gotta go back to Columbus,” Craigie said. And Burt likely felt the same as the audience went bonkers for two solo-acoustic folk singers who are also quite hilarious. Review and photos here.
The Travelin’ McCourys (4) at Woodlands Tavern, Columbus, Aug. 1 - There were times during this gig it seemed as if Woodlands Tavern might lift off the ground. Review and photos here.
Bobby Weir & Wolf Bros (3) featuring the Wolfpack with Cincinnati Pops Orchestra, at Music Hall, Cincinnati, Nov. 13 - The psychedelic-symphonic integration was complete by the time “Playing in the Band” launched with CPO handling the melody before dropping out and allowing the 10 members of the Bros and the ’Pack to take the number for a little walk in the woods. Review and photos here.
Robert Cray Band (10) at Lincoln Theatre, Columbus, Aug. 23 - The Robert Cray of 2024 is very much like the Robert Cray of 1989. Review and photos here.
Carsie Blanton (1) at Natalie’s Grandview, Columbus, Sept. 17 - This was much more than a traditional music concert; call it a non-traditional concert wrapped in tragedy and comedy. Review and photos here.
Nickel Creek (1) at Mershon Auditorium, Columbus, Feb. 15 - After playing together since they were children, the now-40-something members of Nickel Creek often sound like one player rather than the three who are on stage. Review and photos here.
moe. (10) with Daniel Donato’s Cosmic Country (1) at Rose Music Center at the Heights, Huber Heights, July 19 - Twenty-seven years after playing the opening slot on the Furthur Festival, moe. are now the veterans lending their stage to such newcomers as Donato’s Cosmic Country. Review and photos here.
Rodrigo y Gabriela (1) at Columbus Athenaeum, May 15 - From hard rock to flamenco to classical, RyG spanned the world of music and spoke volumes while saying virtually nothing. Which is what the universal language of live performance does. Review and photos here.
Old Crow Medicine Show (4) at KEMBA Live!, Columbus, Jan. 25 - Old Crow Medicine Show ain’t sellin’ no snake oil. No, Sir and Ma’am. Their music is a proven elixir for all that ails at the end of a long day. Review and photos here.
Jorma Kaukonen (6) with Special Guest John Hurlbut at Natalie’s Grandview, Columbus, Feb. 25 - Despite the seamless, single-set presentation with no encore, Kaukonen and Hurlbut presented a gig that felt like two gigs owing to its diversity of style and substance in an all-too-rare live-music innovation. Review and photos here.
Ruthie Foster (2) at Levitt Pavilion, Dayton, Aug. 8 - The set consisted mostly of covers. But they sounded like Ruthie Foster songs. Review and photos here.
Norah Jones (2) with Mavis Staples (3) at Rose Music Center at the Heights, Huber Heights, July 10 - Celebrating her 85th birthday with 4,000 friends and fans, the opener outshone the headliner, which was no small feat. Review and photos here.
Little Feat (4) with Los Lobos (24) at PNC Pavilion, Cincinnati, June 18 - When writing about a two-band gig, journalistic norms dictate leading with the headliner. But where Little Feat and Los Lobos are concerned, such guidelines are bunk. Review and photos here.
Violent Femmes (2) with Columbus Symphony Orchestra, Columbus Commons, June 22 - A twitchy brand of acoustic punkabilly music goes well with orchestral accompaniment. Review and photos here.
Yarn (1) at Woodlands Tavern, Columbus, Nov. 16, 2024 - Celebrating the power of music. Building community. Focusing on the good things in life. This is what Yarn’s performance was all about. Review and photos here.
Amythyst Kiah (1) at Natalie’s Grandview, Columbus, Nov. 23 - Accompanying herself on acoustic guitar and banjo, introducing and explaining the songs’ origins and looking like the world’s-coolest bespectacled professor in checkered Vans, black pants, a muted-yellow jacket and top and a bolo tie, Kiah proved genres artificial. Review and photos here.
The Steel Wheels (3) at Woodlands Tavern, Columbus, Jan. 17 - From head-banging electric guitar and drum solos to a cappella spirituals around a single mic to vaguely psychedelic esoterica, the Steel Wheels roll to and from every location on the musical map. Review and photos here.
Richard Thompson (3) at Stuart’s Opera House, Nelsonville, July 23 - Though Thompson’s good British humour was intact, his respiratory ailment limited his song choice to numbers in lower keys, likely caused the guitarist to forget the words to “Walking the Long Miles Home” and “Singapore Sadie” and to abandon “She Twists the Knife” altogether after one line. Review and photos here.
LA LOM (1) at A&R Music Bar, Columbus, Dec. 14 - If there’s a knock on LA LOM, it’s that the trio tends to have a sameness in tone and style, leading to flatlines among the huge peaks. Yet the young trio is clearly at work at blazing a path that, when realized, is going to leave sonic scars in the ground it treads. Review and photos here.
Jennifer Hartswick (1) at Levitt Pavilion, Dayton, Aug. 30 - The music flowed like a long, winding river of sound, alternately cascading and riffling across American rock ‘n’ roll, blues, funk, jazz and soul music on a hot-and-humid night that Tennessee resident Jennifer Hartswick said “is like winter” for someone living in the South. Review and photos here.
Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit (1) at Rose Music Center at the Heights, Huber Heights, Sept. 7 - Jason Isbell cleans up the sound of his formative experience with Drive-By Truckers, adds elements of Neil Young and Crazy Horse and the Allman Brothers Band and - with key support from “my rock ‘n’ roll band, the 400 Unit” - creates something smooth and contemporary. Review and photos here.
Cat Power (1) at Columbus Athenaeum, Sept. 18 - Cat Power took the Columbus Athenaeum stage and a faux Bob Dylan concert broke out. Review and photos here.
Sarah Jarosz (1) at Memoriał Hall OTR, Cincinnati, April 26 - Jarosz plays pop music well. But this was pop, not Americana, music. Review and photos here.
Circles around the Sun (2) and Mikaela Davis & Southern Star (1) at Skully’s Music-Diner, Columbus, March 20 - Mikaela Davis wasn’t the headliner, but she was the star of the show. Review and photos here.
The Avett Brothers (5) at KEMBA Live!, Columbus, Aug. 20 - The Avett Brothers of 2024 are a band in flux. While the seven-piece touring lineup remains the same, the group is supporting a pop-leaning LP and talks from the stage about working, more than playing, for its audience. Review and photos here.

Who is the most famous or infamous person you have ever met? First, I want to inform all of you that I grew up with Mr. Ronald Harper from 1972 until 1981 because his family members attended Edison Elementary School in Dayton, Ohio. His mother used to work at EDISON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL as a Language Teacher from 1967 until 1992 because her sons and daughters attended Kiser High School from 1978 through 1982. Her oldest son attended Paul Laurence Dunbar High School and graduated in 1978. The twins Ronald and Donald Harper graduated from Kiser High School in 1982. Ronald Harper attended Miami of Ohio immediately after High School. Ronald Harper played basketball all of his life from 1978 to 1998 for Miami of Ohio University from 1982 through 1986. The first NBA team that drafted him was the Los Angeles Clippers where he played for them for three years. Afterwards, he played basketball for the Cleveland Calvaliers for another three years and he also played for the Chicago Bulls for six years and he won five championship Rings while playing with the Chicago Bulls. Second, I also attended Roth High School with Mr. Keith Byers. Mr. Byers played football and basketball with the Roth High School Falcons for three years and he transferred to Trotwood High School Rams for one year. Mr. Keith Byers attended the Ohio State University for four years as a Running Back for the football team from 1982 through 1986. Mr. Keith Byers played for the New England Patriots for a few years, and he also played football for a couple of other NFL Teams as well. I also attended High School with Mr. Mark Baker, who played basketball for Paul Laurence Dunbar High School from 1983 through 1987. He also played basketball at Ohio State University from 1987 to 1991. Third, I helped raise my oldest nephew from the time that he was born on Friday February 28, 1986 at 8:25pm at Good Samaritan Hospital in Dayton, Ohio. My nephew attended Fairborn High School in Fairborn, Ohio from September 2000 to June of 2004. His name is Mr. Anthony Russell. He graduated from Tiffin University in Tiffin, Ohio in May of 2009. He played football for three years. My nephew is in Upper Management right now, and he is doing well for himself. I also have another nephew who played football for Northridge High School from 2007 through 2011. He was an All State Football Player in 2009 through 2011. His name is Mr. Tyrell Russell. He also played basketball as well as my oldest nephew. My oldest nephew made All State while playing football and basketball. Fourth, I remember seeing President William Jefferson Clinton in the Toledo, Ohio on the corner of Madison Avenue and Adam Street this was during the time that I was living in Toledo, Ohio from September of 1990 through 1996. I saw President Clinton in 1992 in the Toledo Ohio during his Presidential Campaign. I remember when I was on NBC News in 1995 on Friday February 21, 1995 at the University of Toledo Student Union during a Debate between Dr. Frances Cress Welshing and Mr. Murray about the Books called The Bell Curve & The Isis Papers. I was interviewed by Reporters from NBC News immediately after the Debate. I have written a paper about the Debate for my Class in Race and Ethnic Minorities with Dr. Morrissey who taught the class during the year 1995. Thank you for reading my essay today. God Bless All of You 🙏!

This is fascinating. Jacob the Carpet Bagger (He goes to US tourist traps all over the US) just went to Foy's year round Halloween store in Fairborn Ohio.
I'm subscribed to The Carpet Bagger in Youtube and sometimes he goes to really interesting and strange places.
And apparently Foy's Halloween Store (two locations and a horror museum) has been in business for ninety-five-years. I didn't even know Halloween stores (as a concept) dated back ninety-five-years.
It's actually an entire town of Halloween stores. A Foy's Halloween store, Foy's Halloween themed 5 and 10 (one of the oldest 5 and 10s in existence and stayed alive by switching to becoming Halloween themed for the novelty), Foy's horror museum, a kids only Halloween costume store, the regular Foy's Costume store, Halloween Tattoo Parlor, Oddities shop. And this is all on Main Street Fairborn Ohio.
Also the town library is designed to look like a giant book case with real book titles including Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, Where the Sidewalk Ends, and Coraline by Neil Gaiman.
Foy's owns most of the town and made it a mostly Halloween Town all year long and Foy's has been there as a Halloween store since 1929. Again, I didn't even know Halloween stores date back that far.
Where is the heir of the Foy empire and how can I marry him? (Joking... maybe...)

Local cities including Dayton, Beavercreek, Centerville, Fairborn, Kettering and Trotwood still forbid their employees from using marijuana when they are off the clock. Other public agencies have…
