If laoft characters hadn't already had names, what names would you have chosen?
ooooooh okay so ironically. they did almost, technically, kind of, have different names
in my VERY first notes reference for laoft, literally written in my phone the day after CLBG aired and i desperately wanted to make a really cool role for what i thought was the series newly introduced antagonist, was a list of characters "true names"
basically, i was going to take the idea of being careful with your true name to the maximal extreme, to the point that your "true name" in wickhills wasnt even your legal name, but a completely secret name that only you and your parents knew. Logan, Patton, Virgil, Roman were all going to be "outer names" and these new names i wrote would be the true ones.
and also that these names got little add ons as you aged and met certain milestones, developed certain traits. i dont know if any of you have read eragon (and i dont reccommend you do) but it had a similar system
so Patton was going to be born "Adal" (righteous, sincere, noble), and then sometime in toddlerhood gain become "Adalwin" (Win meaning friend. He gained Eulalos (which i later reused the feminine form for Eulalia the parakeet!) when he got his gift, and "Clement" (Gentle) when he befriended Logan.
Roman was born "Wynne" (friend), which became "Hartwin" as a toddler ("hart" meaning brave, or a male deer). around the time he started hunting fae he gained the second name "Kemp" (warrior) and after the deal gained "Alcaeus" meaning "strength"
Logan i never settled on, but the top contenders were "Mattan" (gift), "Epiphanes" (appearing) and "Irenaeus" (peaceful). i also played around with the idea of matching twinny names for Logan and Thomas. Samson and Jericho (sun and moon), Florus and Thales (flower and blossom), Artemidoros and Apollodoros (gifts of the moon and sun, respectively).
And you've actually already seen what Virgil's was going to be, or at least part of it. "Brennus" the name of Virgil's character in the Fair Folk and Fortresses universe, was my pick for his first name, and the full thing was going to be "Brennus Aelfric Sitheach"
Brennus can mean king/prince or raven, Aelfric means elf-king, and Sitheach means fairy-like. i also had this idea i thought was clever that the reason the curse worked so well was because it changed his true name from "Aelfric" to "Aelfstan" (Elf Stone) ie froze him to stone
like i said this was literally my very first laoft document, so none of this really survived once i started worldbuilding in earnest, mostly because as you can see it would have been really just wildly impractical.
its so old that it still has the name of Thomas's IRL friends as classmates (joan valerie talyn etc) from before i decided i wanted to use cartoon therapy characters instead and save the fictionalized real friends for thomas to meet in college AND from when i was still assuming it was going to be moxiety and logince.
changing the two separate romantic plots in The Darkest Part Of The Forest to one poly love "triangle" was the point where i really started to diverge from "making a one-to-one DPOTF au" to making something that was more personal to me. im not even entirely sure if i'd call this particular document LAOFT LoreTM but its definitely a step in the process i think is kinda neat!

fantasy/sci-fi AUS (ESPECIALLY werewolfs/vamps/fae)
dramatic/dark plots and themes
multi-paragraph (i can also do short form tho, dw!!)
probably more stuff that i. forgor.
STUFF I WONT DO:
logicality (unless its in a poly ship)
non-tss rp.
if you are 18+ romance ships are off the board, obvi.
obvi, but: anything nsfw, inc*st, or p*dophilic.
karrot kings or thomas x side (nothing wrong with either i just. Do Not know what to do with that. HOWEVER platonic thomas x side is alright)

electing strange perfections (in any stranger i choose) - Chapter 1/?
next | masterlist | AO3
Word count: 5117
Summary:
The fae world and the human world had always been mostly separate. Fae crossed between the two realms while humans remained oblivious to their very existence, and that was how it had been for centuries. But when the lines start to bleed, and humans start catching on, who's going to step in and put an end to the conflict that follows? Human or fae, fate does tend to fall into strange hands (aka, logince fae au)
((AN: this is like 60% based on an rp i did a while back on tumblr. I definitely strayed from the original storyline a lot but the idea and the characters are like… pretty similar i think. this is also incredibly self indulgent bc im a sucker for logince. enjoy :] ))
~ * ~
Humans liked to consider themselves to be intelligent. Masters of the world they lived in. They dug up coal to power their great machines, and cut down trees to put up the scaffolding for towering buildings. They sacrificed their share of the Earth for the wonders they saw fit to create, and they turned to each other with unsatisfied smiles, as if to say: ‘Look at that. Look at the greatness we have achieved’.
They never quite finished with their powerful innovations, there was always something more. Some turned to science, and quickly became bored, many claiming that we had already mastered the Earth, there was nothing more to learn. Yes, humans quickly convinced themselves that they understood most everything, and whatever they didn’t understand, well, they at least could pinpoint its existence, could say with confidence that it was infact real. Although this mindset has led to great discoveries, it is the hinderance of the most vital secrets that the Earth holds close to her chest.
Then again, perhaps it’s not always the important people making the important discoveries. After all, sometimes fate does tend to fall into strange hands.
~ * ~
Logan awoke just like he did every other morning, the smell of coffee drifting up the stairs, the sound of his mothers poorly singing along to some ABBA song, the summery morning air drifting in from his window that he always forgot to close, his homework still strewn across his desk from his late night study session. All was normal because that day was a normal day.
He got out of bed as usual, ten minutes before his alarm was supposed to go off, as he always tended to wake up earlier than he needed to. He blamed it on his circadian rhythm, and would usually bore his mothers to death with some scientific spiel whenever the topic came up, but if asked if he would set his alarm back ten minutes to compensate for it, he refused for whatever reason.
He put on his school clothes that he had laid out the night before, black jeans, a blue button up and a black tie, similar to what he always wore, formal and neat. He heard that type of clothing would get kids bullied in some schools, but he kept his head down, was quiet and polite, and his peers were always kind to him, even if he never found himself with many friends.
He brushed his hair, cleaned his teeth, made himself seem presentable, turned off his alarm once it went off, picked up his already packed schoolbag and slung it over his shoulder, before he went downstairs, everything going the way it always did. Today would be a normal day, why wouldn’t it be?
Logan’s feet had barely left the bottom step when one of his mothers swept into the hallway from around the corner. April was her name, named after the month she was born in. She often joked about her parents lack of creativity, and her surprise that her younger brother wasn’t named January. She was a shorter woman, with deep golden tan skin and kind eyes shining from behind a pair of round framed glasses. Her hair was long, dark, and curly, and her face was adorned with deep smile lines to compliment her dimples. Logan knew his mom had always been a beautiful woman, though he didn’t need to say it, his other mother, Natalie (named after nothing in particular, her parents simply adored the name), did her best to remind her wife every morning.
April walked to up to him with a skip in her step, going on her tip toes to run a hand through his hair “Oh Logan, look at you, always so professional looking. It’s high school, not a business conference you know?” she smiled fondly as she stepped back to admire her son.
“Mama, please, I have a reputation to uphold,” Logan replied, flattening down his hair. It was insatiably curly, and he always did his best to keep in neat. Just another trait he shared with his mama. People had always pointed out how similar he and April looked, ever since he was a child. April always tried to convince him that he had Natalie’s eyes, but he knew now that he was older that made no sense. Natalie, with her pale skin and pin straight brown hair, played about as much of a part in his genetic makeup as the anonymous man from the sperm bank played in his upbringing.
Logan’s almond skin, his poor eyesight, his curly, dark hair, all were traits he shared with his mama. He figured that the anonymous donor must have been tall though, as he was almost a head taller than both of his mothers, with a bit more room for maybe one more growth spurt.
“Oh please, all of your teachers already adore you” April hummed and tugged on Logan’s tie gently “At least lose the tie, it’s going to be hot today. Come on, breakfast is ready, we might even let you have two cups of coffee this morning if you promise to not stay up so late studying tonight” she said with a grin, walking out into the kitchen.
Logan followed behind her, the sounds of a familiar song filling his ears as he stepped into the kitchen alongside his mother.
‘-my destiny in quite a similar way. The history book on the shelf, is always repeating itself…’
“Waterloo? You couldn’t have picked a better song?” Logan teased lightly, immediately going to pour himself a cup of coffee.
Natalie turned her head around from where she was sitting at the kitchen bench “Excuse you young man, Waterloo is and always has been a hit” she argued back with a light-hearted tone, her voice still a bit rough from sleep..
“No, it was a hit in 1974. The Winner Takes it All is objectively a much better song, if we’re talking ABBA” Logan pointed out. Their musical debates were common in the mornings. It was all routine, his mothers put on a song, Logan came downstairs and critiqued it over coffee, rinse and repeat.
“Sorry honey but I have to agree with Nat on this one” April chimed in, sitting next to her wife “I mean, you can’t win Eurovision with a mediocre song. Besides, The Winner Takes it All doesn’t fit the morning vibe”
Natalie nodded to what her wife said, a tiny strand of her hair falling out of the tight bun it was held in “Very true. And really if we’re going to talk better ABBA songs, I’d consider Hole in Your Soul over any other song any day”
April put a hand over her heart in a dramatic fashion “Whoa hold on a second, you’re taking Hole in Your Soul over The Visitors? Now that’s crazy...”
‘-couldn't escape if I wanted to, Waterloo, knowing my fate is to be with you…’
Logan smiled a little to himself as his mothers continued to playfully bicker over ABBA. He took a sip of his coffee, drinking slowly so he didn’t burn his tongue.
His mothers had known each other for years, but for all Logan knew they could have known each other forever. He had never met two people who were closer than they were. They met in their sophomore year of high school, and Natalie proposed when they were both twenty-two, back in 1999. Of course, they couldn’t actually get married until about sixteen years later, for obvious reasons. Logan was ten at the time, he still remembered the wedding, and how much his mothers had smiled all throughout the ceremony. He was sure if he dug around in his closet a bit he could find the little black suit and tie he had worn, all dusty and stiff with seven years of no wear.
Logan eventually finished his coffee and put it down on the bench, filling his cup up again, slowly and carefully so as to not spill a single drop. Natalie looked over at Logan, not mentioning the second cup as it was merely routine for all of them by now “What’s on the agenda today Lo?”
Logan hummed, taking a sip of his coffee before speaking “I have a science project to wrap up, and then I might stay late to finish up my English essay in the common area”
“Why don’t you just come home and finish it?” April asked, tilting her head to the side.
“If I come straight home you’ll spend all the time I spend on work trying to pull me away from it, and I can’t risk that sort of distraction,” Logan answered.
April scoffed “Oh please, it’s probably not due for another month, you’re far too organised”
Natalie nodded in agreement “Yeah, you certainly didn’t inherit either of your mothers’ tendencies for procrastination”
“Well inherited procrastination or not, I’ll stay late today. What time should I be home by?” Logan asked, grabbing an apple out of the fruit bowl next to him on the counter, intending on taking it for breakfast even though he knew the chances of being able to leave the house without first eating a proper meal were slim.
“Hmm how about you be home by… now. And ditch school. And we can do something fun as a family and have a together day” April suggested, tilting her head to the side with a crooked smile.
“As tempting as that sounds-“ Logan began in a way that sounded like he wasn’t tempted in the slightest “I have a perfect attendance to uphold, and besides, I promised Virgil that I’d meet up with him to help proof read a paper for him”
Natalie sighed heavily, her shoulders slouching in an melodramatic disappointment “Oh dearest Logan, always working, never enough time for his boring old mothers”
Logan rolled his eyes in amusement, tucking the apple away in his bag to save for his walk to school “Look, tomorrow’s Saturday, we’re all free all day so we can have a together day then; we’ll do whatever you want. How does that sound?”
“I thought you had to tutor on Saturdays?” April pointed out.
“The student cancelled, they came down with the flu, or they were out of town, I can’t really remember. Either way, I don’t have to tutor them tomorrow so I’m free” Logan explained.
Both April and Natalie smiled “Well that’s wonderful! Yes, tomorrow it is, and you better not cancel otherwise you will never live it down” April warned.
“Yes mama, I know” Logan said with a fond smile, about to turn to head out the door when Natalie picked up a brown paper bag off of the counter and tossed it to him.
“Breakfast” She said simply “Eat it or I’ll come down to the school and tell them you have a doctors appointment and-“ she gasped dramatically for effect” “-force you to skip school!”
“Yes ma” Logan said, his tone exasperated but downplayed by his smile. “Love you Lo, have a good day” “You too ma” “And me?” “Yes mama, and you” “Bye Lo, have fun at school, do not work too hard today” “Goodbye”
And with that, Logan was out the door. The walk to school wasn’t a long one, and though Logan was perfectly capable of just driving to school, he enjoyed going by foot. It was good exercise and he lived on the brink between suburb and nature, so it was nice to hear the birds and see the green of his surroundings in the mornings, it helped to wake him up.
His actual school was a lot less lively than its surroundings, but that didn’t bother Logan all that much. He enjoyed school, which some people found strange, but didn’t everyone enjoy the things that they excelled at?
He walked into first period with his arms heavy with books and his bag heavy with homework, either to be handed in early or to bring up questions about some aspect of the assignment. First period English went smoothly, he handed in his annotation homework, made good progress on analysing the text they were studying (which they weren’t due to start analysing until next week, Logan just liked to get a head start), and engaged in a friendly debate about the textual meaning behind the piece they were studying, which always brought his mood up, especially considering he always had a tendency to win said debates.
Second period algebra was just as simple for him, writing examples on the board, getting extension work halfway through the class once he had finished all the other material, making notes and areas for improvement. He studied in the library during his morning break and then went straight back in for a physics class in third period.
Everything went pretty well, until fourth period biology, where he hit a small bump in the road.
The first half of the period went well, with Logan handing in one of his projects a week early, as he usually did. Although just as he was packing up to leave, his biology teacher called him up to the front, his project folder open on his desk, “All of your work is exceptional, as always Mr Sanders, however you seem to have missed a small part of the assignment”
Logan was immensely proud of his project. They had been tasked with identifying one common plant that grew in the area, and giving a detailed description on its properties, environment, cellular makeup, evolution over its existence and the like. Logan had taken great care to include every detail, so what could he possibly have missed? “Oh, my apologies sir, I wasn’t aware. I had checked and double checked my project against the instruction guide last night and found no issue, so I am curious, what did I miss?”
Logan’s biology teacher shook his head “It’s nothing major, and I won’t mark you down for it if you don’t want to go and add that now that you’ve already submitted. I’ll admit, it’s only a small detail. In the instruction guide, at the top of the page, students were asked to include either a picture or a physical example of the plant that they had selected” his teacher said, pulling out the guide and sliding it over to Logan, pointing out the part that had instructed that, “It’s easy to miss, don’t stress about it. Now, I can see that you have chosen stinging nettle, so of course I don’t expect you to go out and pick any-“
“I’ll do it” Logan said abruptly, “My apologies sir, I didn’t know that I had missed something so simple. If it’s alright, I will unsubmit my project now and I’ll bring the completed version with me tomorrow”
“Oh, you really don’t have to-“
“Nonsense, I wouldn’t want my work to be of a substandard quality. I assure you, I will have it done properly by tomorrow. Good afternoon sir” Logan said, quick to pick up his project off of the teachers desk and whisk himself out of the classroom without another word. How on Earth could he have missed something so small? He supposed he would have to put off finishing his essay that the afternoon, opting instead to take the walk into the woods at the edge of town to collect some nettle. It was fine, the essay wasn’t due for another month anyways.
When Logan sat down in the library at lunch, he was thoroughly disturbed. He still could hardly believe that he had missed something so simple, so easy. Completing the task would have taken him five minutes, and not only had he not done it, he had completely skimmed over actually doing it, he didn’t even forget, he just didn’t process the instruction.
Logan barely noticed someone sliding into the seat next to him until they cleared their throat to get his attention.
“You good there bud?” Virgil asked, seeing Logan stare off into the distance with that look in his eyes that he only got when he was overthinking something sparking a bit of concern in the older boy. “Hm? Oh, hello Virgil, yes I am perfectly adequate” Logan replied with a small nod towards his friend.
Virgil and Logan had known each other for twelve years. Twelve long years of what started out as enduring each other’s presence, to accepting it, to enjoying it. They had met in kindergarten when they were put in the same class, and forced to sit together after an argument broke out about who owned which pencil when their stationary got mixed up during arts and craft. It was some tactic to get them to get along, and for a while it didn’t work; arguments broke out every day, and many pencils were snapped in half in the process, but by the end of the year, they had begrudgingly accepted each other as acquaintances rather than enemies, and now, years down the line, that bond had only strengthened.
Virgil and Logan wouldn’t quite consider the other the only friend they had, but they would be stupid to not consider each other best friends.
Which was why Logan’s inner turmoil was more than obvious to Virgil.
“Come on, spit it out, what happened” Virgil said, dropping his bag on the floor next to him with a thud.
“It’s nothing, no time for distractions, we need to proofread your paper” Logan said, trying to grab the essay out of Virgil’s hands, not before Virgil had lifted it up and out of Logan’s reach.
“Nuh uh, nice try. You’re not getting this until you tell me what’s wrong” Virgil said, waving the paper around above Logan’s head, making the shorter boy frown at the thought of the creases the taller would be making to the paper. Much to Logan’s dismay, Virgil had always been freakishly tall, standing at almost 6’4”, towering above Logan who stood at about 5’10”. They had been the same height for most of their earlier school years, but as soon as Virgil hit the seventh grade he shot up, and ever since then he had often used his height to his advantage, and seemed to take much enjoyment out of holding things just out of Logan’s reach.
Logan sighed in annoyance and conceded “Fine. I handed in my biology project early and my professor informed me at the end of class that I had missed an instruction so it was unfinished”
Virgil blinked “And?”
“That’s all” Logan replied simply.
“That’s all?” Virgil echoed, biting back a laugh “Lo that’s no big deal, don’t worry about it. You handed it in early too so it doesn’t matter. You can just unsubmit it and bring the completed one in when it’s ready”
“I know I know, it’s just… I never miss details like that. It was such a small thing, a physical example or a picture, that was all I was missing, and the instruction was right at the top of the page and I just… missed it” Logan said, his tone suggesting that it was some crucial thing that he had skimmed over and not just a small part of his project.
“Y’know what I think Lo? I think you’re overworking yourself” Virgil said, resting his chin in his hands, keeping his paper pinned under his elbow on the table so Logan still couldn’t get to it “You need to take a break, step away from schoolwork for a bit. You’re already like months ahead of everyone else on classwork. It couldn’t hurt to stop for just a little while, clear your head. I mean, no one in a right state of mind freaks out about missing a simple part of their project, do they?”
Logan sighed heavily, wanting to argue but figuring that it was no use, Virgil had always been the stubborn type, and in some way he was correct. “I suppose you’re right, maybe I am in over my head. I’ll try to step back a bit” Virgil smiled, pleased “Good, you need it specs”
“If you say so. Now, you wanted me to proofread your paper?” Virgil raised an eyebrow amusedly and shook his head, to which Logan huffed in annoyance “Certainly your work doesn’t count as my work, I’m simply going to proofread it-“
“Nope, you’re taking a well-deserved break and that includes all forms of work including proofreading. It’s in the fine print of our agreement, and I would recommend you read it but I’m sure that counts as some kind of proofreading so no, don’t do that” Virgil said, snickering at his own joke.
Logan just rolled his eyes “You are incorrigible”
“You’re very welcome L”
The two boys sat like that for a while, engaging in a bit of friendly back and forth. It was all familiar for them, after all it wasn’t the first time that Virgil had insisted Logan took a break. He always found some way to overwork himself, through school, personal projects, or anything else that required his attention for extend periods of time. Of course, it’s not as bad as it used to be. Virgil remembered the times when he wouldn’t see Logan at all outside of classrooms for days, or sometimes weeks on end, always too busy studying at the library or finishing the mountains of extra work he had asked for in each subject. He remembered how irritable he always was, how tired he always looked. Over time, things changed, and it was better now, but it always felt like Logan was at risk of falling back into that spiral, constantly teetering on the edge. Virgil wished that Logan could eventually find some way to just step back from reality, even just for a little while, not get so caught up in school.
By the time they were supposed to head off to their last class of the day, both of the boys were in good spirits. A lively conversation mixed with a casual debate usually did wonders to lift their moods, so they both parted ways to their classes with smiles and promises to organise plans together soon.
Logan was feeling better, that little weight on his shoulders felt smaller, everything felt more manageable now that he was no longer so worked up over something so unimportant. He walked into his ancient history class with a lighter feeling in his chest, ready to get the class done and be finished for the day. He sat down in his usual seat, pulled out his notebook and pens, and started taking notes as the class began, writing down the work and answering any questions that the teacher asked. It was all normal and completely usual once more.
Logan often had a habit of getting too into his own head about minor things, especially when it came to matters of academics, something that he took very seriously. What had started out with him doing accelerated math and advanced reading in elementary school had led to him being the top of his year, winning awards for essays he submitted to competitions, and having several, rather persistent college scouts trying to persuade him into submitting an application. Even though he was at a point in his senior year where potential colleges was something that students were beginning to think over, Logan had already planned out his course and top picks for colleges, all of which he was certain he would be accepted to, and his mind was rarely changed. He liked to have things planned out in advance after all. At the very least, he was modest about it. In fact, his mothers seemed to brag more than he did about his numerous achievements. He would always claimed to be embarrassed whenever they started to boast about him, but in reality, he didn’t mind too much; it was nice to be recognized. The end of class rolled around quicker than Logan had expected, the teacher signing off with giving them a hefty homework task to complete over the weekend, leaving students groaning and mumbling in discontent while Logan just jotted it down in his notebook.
After placing his things neatly in his bag and staying back to ask his teacher one question about the homework, he left the classroom, heading towards the school gates. On a normal day he would walk home with Virgil, since he only lived about a five minute walk away from his home, however Virgil was not waiting for him at the gate today. He had messaged him a little while ago, letting him know that he was going to stay back in the library to proofread his paper that they didn’t get to read at lunch with some of the student volunteers there. Logan was very tempted to join him in the library, but he knew Virgil wouldn’t let him stay and would bring up the whole ‘overworking’ thing again, so he kept on walking, past the school gates, onto the street.
At about fifteen minutes into his walk, the lack of the usual conversation he would be having with Virgil began making things a little dull, leaving the occupation of his mind to his thoughts. At any one time Logan was thinking of many things, and this was no exception. He was thinking about how best to start his ancient history homework, if his mothers had brainstormed any weekend plans, what his grade would be on their recent math quiz, a rather tricky chemistry question that had puzzled him for quite some time, and unsurprisingly, his biology project. Even though he tried to ignore it, he couldn’t help that prickly feeling under his skin when he thought about it being handed in incomplete.
Logan stopped in the middle of the path and looked around. A decent distance from him, yet well within his line of sight, he could see the tree line that separated the suburbs from the woods that all the infrastructure was built around. Logan had heard about developers fighting over the woods for a long time, wanting to build apartment blocks, but the land was protected by the government under an environmental act; Logan was pretty sure it was a national park, or at least something of the sort.
He stayed looking at the tree line for a few moment, hesitating on a decision. He knew that Virgil warned him against worrying over the project too much but surely it couldn’t hurt. It shouldn’t take long to find a sample anyways, stinging nettle was rather common around these parts, and taking a short detour was surely better than leaving his biology project unfinished. Without another thought, Logan diverted from the sidewalk and started heading towards the woods. It was a short walk, mostly downhill, so it didn’t take long, and once he passed the tree line, the shade provided by the canopy was a welcome protection from the warm afternoon sun.
The air was cool and damp from the recent summer rains, and the leaf litter crunched softly under his feet as he walked further in, his path illuminated by the few rays of afternoon sun that snuck in through the canopy. Logan took a short moment just to look around and appreciate it all. He had always had a soft spot for nature, ever since he was a small child. His mothers were obsessed with showing him environment documentaries and watching how excited he would get over the pretty plants and cool fauna. Eventually, as he got older, that excitement turned into a genuine passion and curiosity. The natural world was certainly considered to be one of his personal interests.
He was interrupted from his thoughts by a sudden strange feeling that burrowed it’s way into his chest. He didn’t know where it had come from or what exactly the feeling was, all he knew was that suddenly, his body felt a little lighter, and he felt the sudden urge to keep walking forward. For a moment he thought it was like he was being beckoned, but that was an illogical thought, it was just some strange instinct. All thoughts of the strange feeling were forgotten when he finally stumbled upon what he had been looking for; a patch of stinging nettle, well he supposed it could hardly be considered a ‘patch’, as it was arranged in a rather strange manner, growing in a perfectly neat circle on the ground in front of him, with little white flowers blossoming below each leaf. In the middle of the circle sat a smooth stone, with little tufts of moss growing off it. Logan admired it for a few moments, almost like he couldn’t quite take his eyes off of it. The feeling in his chest ached softly, he ignored it.
He thought it was strange, for the nettle to be growing in such a perfect circle like it was. Perhaps someone had come along and planted it like this, or maybe it was some wonderful coincidence. He wasn’t entirely sure, but for some reason it captivated him.
After a minute or two he caught himself getting distracted by his thoughts and snapped himself out of it. He knew collecting a sample of this stuff would be tricky, he didn’t want to get stung, and he didn’t really have the right equipment for the job. He considered turning back and waiting for another day to return when he had something safer to carry the plant with, but quickly dismissed that thought, he was here now, he might as well get it done. Besides, he had told his teacher that it would be completed by tomorrow, and he intended to live up to that claim.
Crouching down, Logan put his hand in the hem at the bottom of his shirt and used it to safely pick a piece of nettle, tearing off a few leaves near the bottom so he could let go of his shirt and hold it by the stem. He observed the piece he had taken, it was adequate, but the leaves were small and the flowers were a little wilted, not the most pristine specimen. With a slight frown, Logan looked back at the circle, and a stem of nettle across from him on the other side of the circle caught his eye; large green leaves, a tall stem, numerous little white flowers, it would do perfectly.
The young man gingerly stepped into the circle, careful not to tread on any of the other bits of nettle, and crouched down inside of it, reaching out to pick the nettle from the base of the stem to avoid getting stung. He smiled a bit, admiring it once it was in his hand as he felt that strange feeling in his chest soar. It would work perfectly, he was sure to get a good mark on his biology project, now that everything was accounted for.
Logan had time for only one more thought, that being that he was suddenly feeling a bit lightheaded, before everything suddenly went dark.

Hello! It’s the anon that requested the fae logince!!
I have an idea, but it is just an idea-
So, running off the image that it start with Roman doesn’t seem to be in.. control. At all-
Logan is that typical fae that was like ohh pretty human, I’m just gonna *pick up* and fucking keep it.
But even once you give your name to a fae and you belong to them- even if they wipe you a clean state, hints of your previous self shines through! It’s the chemicals in your brain, you can’t really wave them away!
So Logan has his little obedient human, who occasionally is very flattering and sweet and all ✨grand gestures✨ and looks ✨pretty✨ and Logan promptly realizes after a while, that he isn’t thinking of Roman the same anymore- he’s fond of the human-
He’s got a crush
So logan, realizing the pickle he is in, slowly lets Roman gain control again, in hope of freaking apologizing and wooing him. (Idk about that part, but hey, it’s an idea!)
Que enemies (??? Will ro be upset???) to lovers speed run were Logan realizes Roman is VERY STRONG, and pins him to wall to make out
Jfkdkd ohhhhhh I definately like that. Some minor tweaks that i'd make based on my initial idea from said image is that Roman gave his name and thus himself over, willingly, to Logan.
(The rest under the cut cuz this got long)
He was a prince with a missing twin brother(ehem. Remus went and dipped to party w/ a certain pair of fae, maybe relevant later but only story wise and not getting involved with Roman and Logan wise, plus Remus didnt intentionally bail on his brother, time just works differently in the fae world, he had every intention of coming back to see his brother again) so with the weight of the kingdom looming on his shoulders he decides he cant do it.
Another aspect of this needing to run away idea is that Roman is trans, and is thus the only remaining heir and technically their kingdom's crowned Princess(which he Hates but since Remus is Missing, no one else has the power to fight his father on it) and his father is looking at marrying him off which Cannot Happen.
So he runs into the massive forest where he last saw his brother go and runs and runs, even when his skirts rip and his sleeves tear and he trips on tree roots, he runs.
And when his legs finally give out, he's caught in strong arms, a gentle hand cradling his head and a crooning voice lilting through the clearing. Hes in a fairy circle, he can see the trail on the forest floor, looping around him and this new stranger neatly.
He looks up and sees this beautiful fae, sharp edges and ethereal beauty, ice blue eyes sharp and calculating and mouth curved into a comforting grin just a hare sharper than human teeth can manage. A Fae. Roman swallows, unable to quite look away.
Hes still being cradled by the others impossible strength, though theyve now lowered to the ground.
"Breath, little one, breathe. Thats it, good boy. Im so proud of you. Just take your time, you look so tired from running all that way, I'll protect you, my dear." The low, lilting voice says, a gentle hand carding through his mussed hair. Its as if Roman hadnt been running for so long, every breath hurts less and less, his exhaustion evaporates and his mind clears with every passing minute that he remains trapped in the others warm gaze.
'To hell with it,' Roman thinks tiredly, 'out of the pan and into the fire.'
Inevitably, the fae gently tucks him closer and asks if they may have his name, and Roman knows he should deny it and play it smart, they seem to know full well all the thoughts bouncing around in his stressed out mind, but he cant seem to do it. He leans into their side firmly and tucks up against their chest, ducking his head as he gives his answer.
"Yes, you may have it, and you may have me. I am Roman Elizabeth Sanders, Second Prince of Creetivea."
And if the Fae, Lo, as Roman would come to know the other as, paused for a whole 40 secounds out to sheer bafflement over such a brilliant mind giving up so instantaneously, no one but Roman was there to witness it.
Continuing with your thoughts tho, Lo really does start developing a crush, because Roman is sweet and dramatic and still so very brilliant even without even a third of true awareness or control, and Logan finds himself challenged by this little plaything of his in a way few fae have even managed in a long time. And Logan's protective of his things, of course, especially his favorite pet. No one is allowed to touch his Roman but him.
And so he starts to give Roman bits of pieces of control back, a back and forth over an idea here, a little debate over theatre there, a handsy cuddle-turned-makeout session here, a firm and steamy scene there. Even just a quiet stargazing date that remains soft and calm throughout their quiet exchanges. Giving the True Roman chances to shine through and seeing how he handles it all, how he handles Logan.
And boy, Roman is infuriated by Logan, with his pretty mouth and cocky grin and accurate debate points, he just wants to find a way to knock Logan down a notch every once in a while, never quite to be in charge of course, but Roman loves picking a little on people he loves.
And Logan is falling harder and harder. Oh he adores his Roman. Enough so to give Roman his full name, "Logan." The sound of Roman mewling his name over and over in pure coherent bliss later that night is more than reward enough.
Around other fae Logan is likely very protective and wary with Roman present, and has his own protection spells and the like over his mortal love just to be on the safe side. But hoo boy he absolutely doesnt regret giving Roman near total control back.
The only time Logan pulls him back under control is for fun times, and only ever enough to make roman's body obey, but never enough to override romans mind or consent. Roman discovers just how pliant human biology is when commanded to cum over, and over, and over again at the drop of a single word, and its overwhelmingly hot.
Roman is also very weak for riding Logan, hes got the stamina to go for a while but Lo still far outbeats him, but not to worry, his Fae Love is happy to grip his hips and keep fucking his dripping, oversensitive hole slow and teasingly, till Romans usually overactive mind is finally reduced to overstimulated mush.
What im getting at is that Ro is used to being in a position of power and working doubley as hard to be respected, heard, and listened to, and when he couldnt take it anymore he gave it all up, and at most he might try and pin Logan for kisses and cuddles, it is entirely a show of dramatics and none of strength. He might play a little bratty role here and there and he will happily get into heated debates with Logan over things, but hes never been too interested in overpowering Logan.
Logan, on the other hand, has plenty of fun with (consentually)overpowering his favorite pet-turned-lover~

This will be a very long post, so I will be putting the summaries and tags up top, then each work below. Without further ado, @august-memories I present you your gifts.
First is a Logince Fae AU featuring Fae!Roman and Human!Logan. It’s composed entirely of fluff, and has no warnings.
Second is a Logince Mermaid AU featuring Mermaid!Roman and Mermaid!Logan. Once again it is composed entirely of fluff and has no warnings.
Third is a LAMP Fantasy AU featuring Werewolf!Patton, Vampire!Virgil, Shapeshifter!Roman, and Centaur!Logan. Following the trend of its predecessors it is composed entirely of fluff, although there’s a brief breakfast scene at the end(food).
Starting with the Logice Fae AU
Logan Sanders did not believe in the fae. There were dozens of stories and anecdotes, but those were easily brushed away as superstitious minds leaping to conclusions. He believed only what he could see and touch. You could do neither to the fae.
It was this belief that lead him to his current predicament. He had been hiking and a faery circle had presented itself on the trail. Naturally Logan stepped in to the circle. Unnaturally a person appeared before him, dressed as if he was attending a cosplay event as some character Logan was unfamiliar with. Logan stepped aside to exit the circle.
“How rude, traveller. Don’t you know how to greet a new friend?” the person asked.
“Pardon me, but I do not generally greet every person I pass on my walks,” Logan replied stiffly, turning to face the person. He tried to ignore the thin wings just visible beyond the person’s back.
“Am I just any old person?” the person asked, fluttering his eyelashes.
Logan paused.
“Anyhow, may I have your name?”
“No. I will leave now, good day,” Logan said and stepped beyond the rim of the circle. It was later than he would have thought, but he took a short cut and arrived at his home only 2 minutes late, which he easily compensated for.
After he finished his work, his fingers typed the word ‘fae’ in to the search bar.
*****
Logan walked the same path the next day, and he stepped in to the same faery circle.
“The traveller returns, golden day!” the faery cheered, twirling in a circle and nearly whacking Logan with his wings.
“Will you give me your name?” the faery asked.
“Will you give me yours?” Logan replied.
“Clever traveller. You may call me Roman.”
“You may call me Logic.”
“Where did you become so smart, Logic?”
“In the case of this knowledge it was the simple act of a few Google searches.”
“Google? Is this a scrying glass?”
“No, would you like to see?” Logan said, pulling out his phone. Roman watched as Logan showed him the information there about faeries.
“I guess it’s somewhat like a scrying glass. Here, take a look.”
“Are you offering it to me?” Logan asked.
“What would you do if I said no?”
“I would leave.”
“No, I am not offering it.”
“Have a nice day,” Logan said, and he stepped out of the faery circle. He felt the eyes of Roman trained on his back the entire time.
*****
Logan kept going back. He wasn’t quite sure why. He went back to the circle every time he could, and Roman met him there every single time.
Today they sat within the circle watching the clouds. It was raining, but there was a tiny pocket of sunshine in the circle.
“May I touch your wings?” Logan whispered. Roman looked over at him.
“If that is what you want, I offer you the opportunity.”
Logan gently ran a finger down the wing closest to him. It was so delicate. Tiny scales like flecks of gold were left on his fingers.
“Thank you. If a human were to take something from the faery realm in a bargain with the fae, what would happen?”
“The thing would belong to them forever, but no fae would allow that to happen.”
“May I take you as my lover?” Logan asked. His heart tried to leap out of his throat in the small silence.
“I will be your lover.”
“Take my name; it is Logan.”
That evening two men stepped out of the faery circle in to the rain. One of them had wings hidden beneath his top. The other had tiny scales like gold dust stuck to his fingers. They each belonged to each other for ever and beyond.

Now moving on to the Logince Mermaid AU
There are certain rules for being a mermay. The first one is the most obvious one to humans: don’t be seen by humans. There are a variety of ways to stay out of the eyes of the clumsy landwalkers. Logan, for instance, stayed at a depth where human tools weren’t common. This wasn’t very hard, seeing as he worked in the palace located in the Mariana Trench, and his room was one of the farthest from the opening. It would be incredibly difficult for the humans to find the palace, much less navigate all the halls specifically to Logan’s room and study. Roman took a slightly more dangerous approach. He had a tiny home in a coral reef and his bright colors fit in with the fish around him.
The second rule was a bit harder for humans to understand: always swim at eye-level. Humans are built mostly the same. Some proportions may be a bit different, but all the basic parts are still there, and there’s not much height difference, even between their young and their elders. They don’t have the experience of being a deep sea merman, like Logan, and emerging from the castle to speak to a costal merman, like Roman, and constantly hitting someone as they’re swimming because they can’t keep an eye on all 15 feet of their total body length and navigate and talk. They also don’t have any experience of being a costal merman, like Roman, and having to dodge around a behemoth of a tail that’s about as wide as your total length.
The third rule is one that also exists in human cultures: treat all others equally. A human might be confused about how a deep sea merman, like Logan, and a costal merman, like Roman, could be in a relationship together. Humans have never seen a partner work to make a tiny card the size of his hand with dozens of intricate details for the other’s birthday. Humans have never seen a partner working for days to make a scarf that is as wide as they are tall and several times their body length so that the other can have something of them to have while they’re away at work.
Humans have never been scooped up so gently by a giant hand when they fell asleep while working and held until the giant fell asleep, too. Humans have never woken up to tiny hands pulling on their fingers when they fall asleep at their desk.
Humans have never performed for a partner so giant the love, adoration, and emotions going through his face as a result of the performance are projected across the stage and fuel them on even harder. Humans have never laid completely on a giant chest and listened to the heartbeat and the rumble of a deep voice as their partner talks about the newest human attempts to understand the sea or the newest specimen he got to investigate.
Humans have never known the care in a pinky gently crooked around you back as you cry over something silly. Humans have never known the care in arms that don’t quite circle your wrist holding on nonetheless as you struggle to hold back tears over something close to your heart.
How difficult for humans to never get to be a costal mermay, like Roman, in a relationship with the love of their life, a deep sea mermay, like Logan. How difficult for humans to never get to be a deep sea mermay, like Logan, in a relationship with a costal mermay, like Roman, so passionate and vivacious their smile alone lights flurries in their heart.
Tumblr media
And finally on to the LAMP Fantasy AU
Patton snuggled in to Virgil’s side, and the vampire gently ran a hand over his head. Patton sighed in contentment, prompting a tiny amused huff from Roman, who was currently stuck as a human and laying beside Patton on the floor, leaning up against the ‘couch’. The ‘couch’ of course, was their fourth boyfriend, who didn’t mind them using the horse half of his body as a couch on the full moon. The full moon had started its slow path through the sky, the last embers of dusk still staining the horizon.
Logan flipped the last page in his book and set it down. He stretched out a hand to carefully grab the next book on the stack.
“Read to us?” Virgil asked, his double voice coming out like it did every month.
“Yeah! Read to us!” Roman cheered quietly, shifting to get a slightly better look at his boyfriend’s face. Even Patton perked his ears towards the only being in the room unaffected by the moon’s cycles.
“Only if you stop digging your elbow in to my withers.”
“Sorry,” Roman said, shifting again.
“It’s quite alright,” Logan replied and spread his stack of books out. He pulled out one of the shorter novels that he had read only once before.
“Alright, Chapter One. My name is India Opal Buloni, and last summer…” Logan’s voice calmly narrated the story. Roman’s snores started to punctuate the narration about halfway through the book, but both Patton and Virgil still looked up at him sleepily.
“…all started to sing a song. And I listened careful, so I could learn it right.” Logan finished reading. He looked over to his boyfriends. Each of them had fallen asleep somewhere along the way. He set the book down and looked over at the window. The moon hung outside, still in the beginning half of its trip. Logan carefully shifted in to a more comfortable sleeping position and let the sounds of his sleeping boyfriends carry him off to sleep.
*****
Logan awoke to a cold nose in his face. He opened his eyes to Patton looking at him intently, still a wolf. Logan squinted out the window where the first suggestions of dawn were beginning to appear. He carefully extracted himself from underneath Roman and Virgil and settled his glasses on to his face.
“Good morning to you, too,” he whispered and walked towards the kitchen. Patton whined, looking down at Virgil and Roman.
“Let’s make food, then wake them up,” Logan said. Patton sniffed the air, then ran down ahead of Logan. Logan followed him and started grabbing the things he needed to make their usual full-moon breakfast. He handed Patton a chew bone, and he started playing and gnawing at it.
The sun was properly up by the time Logan took the last piece off the stove. Patton was starting to look uncomfortable and try walking on his hind legs, so his transformation wasn’t far off.
“Come on, let’s go wake them up,” Logan said. Patton started back down the hallway, and Logan followed. Patton started nosing at Roman, and Logan gently shook Virgil’s shoulder. The two of them woke slowly and shuffled off for the kitchen. Patton spun in a circle and sniffed at where he had lain the night before.
“We’ll be in the kitchen when you’re ready, Patton,” Logan said, then followed the two half-awake beings out of the living room.
Logan started to put the plates on the table, and he had barely finished when Patton ran in to the room in his pjs.
“Good morning, Patton.”
“Mm, morning, good morning,” Patton replied. The table was quiet while they ate, and Patton, Roman, and Virgil came fully back to themselves. Roman finished first and summoned his usual glittering wings. Chatter quickly started up, as the sun rose.

Count the teeth
Warnings: Unsympathetic!Roman, Unhealthy Logince, Mind Manipulation Magic, mentions of war, mentions of death
(There is suggested nsfw, but all sexual acts implied are 100% consensual and no magic is being used to manipulate or encourage consent, also Roman is trying to help, but fae morals and human morals don't line up. Let me know if there's tags I've missed)
~~~
This would be a read-more but I'm on mobile ~~~
Logan knows that running away from your problems isn't wise, but at this point that's the last thing on his mind. War was tearing through the kingdom like a wildfire. The armies would be to his village in a week at most. He was poor, weak, vulnerable. There's no way he'd survive, much less his elderly mother. So sue him, if he wanted to spend a day hiding in the woods, he would.
"Careful where you step, handsome. These are dangerous woods for a man alone. Especially a pretty one like you."
Logan jumped, looking up at the man watching him from up in a tree. Logan wasn't sure why, but he knew that he really shouldn't be talking to him.
"Excuse me?"
"You heard. What do I call you, handsome?"
"My name is Logan. Logan Grimm."
The man in green tutted and laughed.
"You pitiful thing. Never give your name out in the woods. Much more dangerous things than me out here, you know."
"I think I know how to handle myself, thank you much."
"That's what they all say. Tell my brother hi, won't you? "
"Brother? What do you-"
The man was gone between blinks, leaving no trace behind.
"What an odd fellow."
He shrugged and continued walking, ignoring both the warning and the prickling feeling across his shoulders.
He smelled blood and roses behind him and that was only warning before he was swept into a dance by a beautiful man with too sharp teeth. Before he knew what was happening, he found himself falling for the otherwordly creature that had him in his grasp.
He spent a long night with him, drinking sweet wine and craving the soft kisses being pressed into his neck.
The man fawning over him introduced himself as Prince Roman, though he refused to answer what kingdom he held domain over. Logan found that he didn't really mind. The prince asks him what he can provide, and Logan asks him for a distraction.
He grins and kisses his hand, "As you wish."
Logan woke up the next morning, sore and relaxed and hypersensitive, but better than he had in his whole life. He wakes up alone, with a basket of bread and fruit next to him, the Prince's sash tied around it as a bow.
He sets off back to his village, blowing a kiss as he leaves, though not noticing that the lovely ornate tent he'd spent the night in was now just a clearing, surrounded by a ring of mushrooms.
He finds nothing but ruins of his village, not a soul left alive in the wreckage.
"I told you, LoLo. Much more dangerous things than me in the woods."
The duke bites his apple, perched on the remnants of what had once been Logan's home.
"Serves you right for giving out your name like that. At least you missed watching your mother die looking for you."
One Word Prompt: Fish
Title: Scaled and Icy
Pairing: Platonic, familial Logince
Summary: “Oh, Virgil is going to hate him. He’s going to erupt in a rant about Logan being too impulsive as if Logan doesn't think out every action in a methodical manner.” Or. Logan decides to adopt an abandoned human child.
Word-Count: 1k
Warnings: Dubious Morally Grey Logan, Merfolk But They’re Like Fae!, Presumed Child Abandonment, Slightly Unreliable Narrator, Transformation, Emotional Manipulation, Mentioned Cannibalism (Kinda), Angst With a Kinda Happy Ending, Don’t Worry Roman’s fine, Probably, It’s Dark Fairytale Vibes Okay
Here, have another eldritch logan adopts a child au!
-
"You're like a fish!" The human child crows, his brown eyes alit with both wonder and joy. He couldn't be much older than three, possibly four. Which is all the more concerning, really, for where is his parents?
Logan blinks. "Not entirely but yes, I do share similar characteristics to them."
"Fish, fishy, fish-man!" The child declares, pudgy fingers reaching to touch Logan's bioluminescent blue scales.
"A-aahah--" Logan begins, moving slightly back, "Please refrain from touching people without asking their permission first."
He tilts his head, golden brown locks falling over his eyes. "Pleeeease can I?"
"Of course, thank you for asking."
The human child's face brightens at this. He reaches again, this time delicately touching Logan's scales with care.
"Whoa," The human child breathes in, "It'ssocool."
He then draws the hand away, resting it against the sandy shore. "My name is Roman and I wanna be a prince! What's your name?"
"You may call me Logic," Logan smiles, showing a slip of his sharp needle-like teeth. There's several rows of them unlike a human’s set of teeth.
This terrifies most humans, but not Roman who possesses the boundless courage of childhood. He leans closer, face scrunching up.
"Logic's a silly name." He declares.
Logan laughs, "Well good thing it's not my true name."
"It's a pretend name? Like make-believe?"
"Essentially, yes. You shouldn't give names away, they have power."
Roman doesn't seem to heed Logan's words, instead protesting, "Well, then, I wanna be Prince Romanul-us-ulus--Romulus then!"
Logan lets out a low, crooning noise, one generally meant to console young merlings. He never expected himself to so enchanted with a child, let alone a human one. Yet the instinctual parental drive is stronger than he thought.
"Well, Roman, would you like to be a prince?" Oh, Virgil is going to hate him. He’s going to erupt in a rant about Logan being too impulsive as if Logan doesn't think out every action in a methodical manner.
"Well, yeah!" Because Roman needs someone to look after him. His parents are clearly not doing a great job of it. He could've gotten swept up in the waves and died if not for Logan.
"Take my hand, come with me then, Roman." This is something the Ocean surely wills. She offered Roman to Logan and he must honor that.
"Okay!" Roman says, eagerly taking Logan's webbed hand.
And it's all Logan needs to pull the child underneath the water, wrapping his arms tightly before Roman can squirm away. Oh, how the child thrashes, his human instincts kicking in and trying to get him to go towards the surface.
It's alright though, it won't last long. Logan sings, thanking the Ocean for Roman. He won't beg for the Ocean to be merciful because the Ocean is not merciful. The Ocean will either let Roman live or She won't. It's something humans seem to fail to understand, time and time again, as they try their hardest to thwart Her will with their contraptions.
Soon Roman's thrashes go weak and the child is limp, heavy in his arms. Logan hums, rocking the child gently back and forth. His grin widens at the slits forming on the child's neck, acting as the opening for gills.
It's the only warning he receives as Roman's eyes reopen, a fiery red hue, as a piercing wail escapes his lips. The child’s soft, rounded baby teeth fall out as little rows of new merling teeth replace them. Still not full-grown teeth, but better at tearing through raw fish than a human’s dull teeth ever could.
"I know, I know," Logan croons, stroking his golden brown locks, "It'll be over soon."
Roman is not the first human Logan has seen the Ocean take as Her own. Virgil was one of the first Logan witnessed. He’d fallen overboard off a human ship, too young to know how to swim. Logan’s pod circled around his sinking figure, tails whipping with fervent excitement.
“He’s an offering from the Ocean,” Logan’s father had whispered to him, “Either he’s meant to become one of the Ocean’s children or he’ll perish and we’ll feast on his flesh.”
Virgil survived, snapping and clicking with the ferocity of a bullshark. Logan has an inkling Roman will be the same as his wails become more of a hissing, shrill noise.
His ears has elongated, tipped with small winged fins. Similar fins appear on the backside of his elbows and Logan suspects on his back as well. The most important part, of course, is when the human’s pair of tails conjoin together to become one. This is where many prove their unworthiness to be one of the Ocean’s own. They perish, a mockery of what a Mer should be; malformed and incomplete, a disgrace to the Ocean.
“Shhh, shhh, Roman, let the Ocean accept you as one of Her own, don’t fight it,” Logan continues crooning, adjusting his grip so he is only holding onto the upper half of Roman’s body. The sliver of Roman’s soul that is still human tries to use this to kick at Logan, to dislodge his grasp.
But this is hard when the tails become stiff, rigid as they become one, shimmering as ruby scales overtake soft flesh. The outerwear humans are fond of wearing tears, ripping to shreds as its unable to handle Roman’s growing unified tail. The tail itself almost makes up his original height but not quite. Roman’s tail twitches once, then several times.
“Rather an odd sensation for you I imagine, hmm?” Logan comments, tracing the edge of Roman’s finned ear fondly. Oh thank the Ocean, he never thought he’d be happy to have a child of his own until this moment.
Roman opens his eyes again, a good proper glowing red hue. “F-fishyman--Logic?”
“Yes?”
“I--I’m a fish too?”
“No, Roman, you’re not a fish. You’re like me--you’re one of the Ocean’s children now.”
“O-ooh. But why? It hurt so much!” Roman pouts, tail lashing angrily.
“That’s simply how it is, little prince,” Logan hums.
“Well, I don’t like it! Can I change back? I wanna see my mom and dad.”
“Now, Roman, you can’t do that. Your parents left you, they weren’t watching you like they should and now I will take care of you. You want to be a prince now, don’t you, Roman? Roman, you will be a prince and you’ll be so excited you’ll forget those humans ever existed, alright?”
Foolish, foolish humans. They really should’ve taught their child about the importance of names. That’s alright, Logan will teach Roman now and keep him safe.
“I do wanna be a prince, I’m going to be a prince, right?” Roman murmurs, yawning. The process of becoming one of the Ocean’s own is a tiring one. He snuggles closer to Logan, curling his tail around Logan. Something Mer instinctively do, to ensure they won’t drift away from their loved ones when they fall asleep. Logan smiles at this.
“Yes of course,” Logan soothes, “You’ll be my little prince and I won’t ever let any harm come to you.”
Sanders Sides Fic Recs
So I recently bullied my roommate into watching Sanders Sides and I made her a list of fics that I really enjoyed, so she would read them, and I figured I'd post it here too. It got really hecking long so it's under the cut. This was also composed in one sitting so it's possible I've forgotten someone and that is a crime, but I am most likely guilty of it.
Anyway. Feel free to reblog with your own recs (or your own fics) because lord knows that I am always hungry for more fics.
Some referenced child abuse and abandonment issues, I guess? 2 works, one is a multichapter piece that sets the opening of the universe, the other is a one-shot taking place later.
Birds of Different Feathers / AdrianaintheSnow
https://archiveofourown.org/series/1867075
Somewhat medieval AU? Yeah I honestly don’t know how to describe this one. Logince, background Moxiety and Dukeceit. It’s good. Kidnapping, some threats of violence, a few references to sexual abuse, and lots of past child abuse. (It’s good, I say, before launching into warnings) 7 works, one main 24 chapter fic, a multi-chapter prequel in progress, and a handful of one shots.
Folds in Time / AdrianaintheSnow
https://archiveofourown.org/series/1925749
Time travel AU where Janus is tired and Patton is a little shit. Moceit, Analogical. Really good. Real chaotic. 2 works, incomplete.
Labeled / AdrianaintheSnow
https://archiveofourown.org/series/1616662
Superhero AU where Logan in a city’s hero, Patton is his husband, and Virgil is their son. Main story is six chapters, the rest is mostly one-shots. Read the notes on the series page for a better explanation of how to read. The first piece is “Sometimes Labels Fail.” 62 works.
In which Virgil has taken lessons on how to demand affection / KieraElieson
https://archiveofourown.org/works/33924799/chapters/84360943
Basically the title. Platonic sides all go to each other looking for affections. Very fluffy.
Coffin Universe / KieraElieson
https://archiveofourown.org/series/1907590
Vampire AU where Logan, Patton, and Roman are vampire hunters. Virgil is a vampire. They adopt Virgil. Warnings… uh… explicit torture? RIP. Three parts, main fic is 34 chapters, follow up is four, and then there’s a cross over with AdrianaintheSnow’s Labled Universe.
Centaur AU / KieraElieson
https://archiveofourown.org/works/26384869/chapters/64268950
It’s in the title. All the sides plus Remy and Emile are centaurs. This isn’t usually my type of fic but it’s really cute and has got some nice bonding. Thomas takes care of them. Janus and Remus are in the universe but haven’t been introduced yet. A multi chapter work in progress and a one-shot flashback.
Can Dark Ideas Be Good? / quantumducky
https://archiveofourown.org/works/27268810
Written as a fake episode where Roman and Remus wreak havoc. A wonderful fic. Lots of rhyming.
in which roman's boyfriends get hecking kidnapped / quantumducky
https://archiveofourown.org/works/17976050?view_adult=true
Roman/Patton/Janus, but written pre-name reveal for Janus, so his name is “Dolion” in this. Basically, Roman is a prince and Moceit gets kidnapped for ransom. Lots of cuddles later. One-shot.
finding the light hidden in darkness / quantumducky
https://archiveofourown.org/works/14534823?view_adult=true
Very angsty, Patton whump, written pre-Remus reveal, and drastically different from the series. Patton gets kidnaped and tortured, Virgil saves him. Morally grey Deceit. Very unsympathetic OC side. One-shot.
Yeah just… here’s angelsdemonsducks’ page. Read it all.
8 one shots with various Soulmate AUs. Real great. Mostly aro-/acespec
Leave No Trace / Avery_Kedavra
https://archiveofourown.org/works/26142394/chapters/63602002
Dragons and Faeries, oh my! Moceit. Patton is going to single-handedly save Logan and Remus from dragons if it kills him. So it’s probably good that Virgil and Janus are with him. It’s great. 24 chapters.
Make It Your Own / Avery_Kedavra
https://archiveofourown.org/works/24145213
Logan reflects on the sides’ childhood. Kinda cute. One-shot.
Too Far Gone / Avery_Kedavra
https://archiveofourown.org/works/23892616
You Belong With Me / thesympatheticvillain
https://archiveofourown.org/works/24154186/chapters/58163452
Logince, 44 chapters. Fae/royal au, it escalates quickly and I love it. Unsympathetic Remus (sort of. technically.)
The Stowaway's Heart / thesympatheticvillain
https://archiveofourown.org/works/24780643/chapters/59922457
Selkie AU with Remus/Logan/Virgil and Roceit, featuring baby Patton being the cutest thing ever. Warnings for implied sexual abuse, child abuse, and general shitty treatment in the past.
https://archiveofourown.org/users/Arwriter/pseuds/Arwriter/works?fandom_id=17879139 is also really good but again make sure you read the tags.
sit back and watch the world go by / delimeful
https://archiveofourown.org/series/1541683
a really nice "humans are space orcs" au featuring human!virgil and alien!... everyone else. A collection of multi-chapter fics, incomplete.
The Light / Fangirlwriting
https://archiveofourown.org/series/2359867
Gives me She-Ra vibes, where the sides minus Janus and Virgil have been raised in a military compound. Remus runs away and in almost instantly adopted by Janus and Virgil. Warnings for child abuse (like really be careful on this one) and general violence. Part one has 13 chapters, part two is in progress.
Loop Number Three Hundred Twelve / Greenninjagal
https://archiveofourown.org/works/26018359
Poor Patton is not having a good day and gets to go a little batshit. Highschool AU. Oneshot.
Deja Vu / Greenninjagal
AU where Remus can see the future and becomes friends with Dee, a shapeshifter and they go around pulling off heists. I love this one very dearly. In progress. Warnings for violence.
That’s all I got for now. Enjoy.
electing strange perfections (in any stranger i choose) - Chapter 2
next | masterlist | AO3
Word count: 3473
(logince fae au :])
Roman awoke just like he did every other morning, the smell of freshly fallen summer rain drifting through his window, the sound of the soft wind in the trees outside, rustling through his old faded maroon curtains, ridden with holes and loose strings, carrying the warm morning air into his room.
The young man turned over in his bed and took a deep breath, smiling softly as he felt the breeze tousle his hair slightly. He sat up, pushing the ancient, knitted wool blanket off of him and stretching his arms languidly. He wasn’t in any rush, he only had one thing planned today, and that was not urgent. No, as far as anyone was concerned Roman had all the time in the world to laze around in his bed, enjoy the rays of sun sneaking through his broken window. But he wasn’t going to do that, even though he knew it was well within his ability to stay exactly like this, Roman wanted to get a start on his day.
His bed groaned and creaked as he stood up; the wood was old and temperamental, but it had been like that when he found this place. And he was lucky to find it, truly. He stumbled upon the tiny old cottage deep in the woods completely on accident a few years ago, and when he discovered no one living there but a few moths and house-spiders, he proclaimed himself the owner of it, to which no one disputed or really cared much to notice. It was a bit secluded, a little ways away from the nearest fae population, but it was comfortable, and Roman liked it.
Roman’s day started the moment his feet hit the cracked wooden floors, taking a few moments to stretch and get his body moving. When he felt his limbs had sufficiently been stretched out of sleep, he then picked up the little pot against the wall, which had collected the droplets of water that snuck in the ceiling from the previous night’s rain, and used it to water the various plants he kept around his room. There were plenty, from a large patch of bright orange marigolds growing from a spot where the floor had weathered away in the corner, a beautiful grapevine that had snuck in through his window and wrapped around his walls giving him lovely fruit in the summertime, moss and daisies and daffodils and violets, just to name a few, all poking in their little flowery heads from every corner of the room, growing all year round thanks to a little magical help from Roman.
Plants weren’t the only thing that were welcomingly cluttering up Roman’s space, with almost every surface of the room, in fact the entire cottage, being covered in little trinkets. Most of these trinkets were already in the cottage when he found it, strange little handheld circles that opened to a reflective piece of glass, paper that had been bound tightly together and filled with words in a foreign language, tiny bottles of sweet smelling liquid, pieces of fabric that had been stitched together to make odd pieces of clothing, a circular device with a glass face and hands pointing towards a sequence of symbols around the edge that made such an annoying ticking noise Roman had to pull it apart to get it to stop, long sticks of fragrant wax attached to a ceramic holder that Roman honestly couldn’t figure out the use for; all things that had, at some point, belonged to a human.
Now, Roman wouldn’t say that he had <em>stolen</em> these things, rather he had found them, well at least he had found the ones in the cottage. The ones that he had taken from elsewhere – other areas of the fae realm, parts of the human realm on the rare occasions that he visited – those were just borrowed, and he would gladly return them should anyone come looking for them. For now, he would keep them safe and cared for on display in his home.
Roman was extremely fond of humanity, he always had been fascinated by stories of them and their odd little inventions, so he couldn’t help but be an enthusiastic collector of whatever human trinkets he could get his hands on, even if he didn’t know what most of them were for. Most other fae found this hobby of his to be strange. He supposed it was a part of their nature, wanting to be as far removed from humanity as possible, keeping them at an arm’s length and at the mercy of faekind should they wish to take control. He wasn’t ashamed of his interest, not anymore, but at the very least, he was glad to be a bit more isolated from the rest of his court, away from the judgemental eyes of his kin.
Roman didn’t like to think about it too much, but he kept his spirits up even as it had crossed his mind. He would be travelling into the centre of his court anyway today, might as well show his face proudly, as he did on each occasion that he travelled out.
Faeries were very much a species that kept their head down, but Roman liked to consider himself an exception.
At the thought of Roman having plans to go out, he stuck his head out of his broken window, and looked up at the sun in the sky, squinting at it for a moment to gauge the time before pulling his head back inside. He should probably get moving, Patton would be waiting for him.
Quickly grabbing a small, human-made, fabric basket from a moss ridden set of drawers and running a hand through his hair, Roman walked through his home, past his cramped, cluttered living room and virtually unused kitchen, and outside into the fresh summer air. The young fae took a moment to appreciate the outdoors, breathing in and out in a rhythm with the rustle of the breeze. A fae’s connection to nature was an important thing, and Roman was not one to ignore such a calling. But of course, he had somewhere to be, so he shook himself from his thoughts, cutting his small moment of tranquillity short, and headed off down the familiar trail that lead to the small creek where Patton would be waiting for him.
Connections between fae weren’t in surplus. They were usually few and far between, as their species was certainly one less aligned with traits like trust and friendliness. Even so, connections that did manage to be formed were usually deep and incredibly loyal. Patton had been Roman’s best friend since they were children, and it was normal for them to catch up beside the creek during the late morning, particularly in the summertime. Patton had always had a particular affinity for water, and Roman knew that he liked to visit after it had rained, so he always made a point to visit him when the water was high, his friend knew this.
Roman knew when he was getting closer to the water, the smell of rain was denser and the air was damp and cool down in this part of the woods. It didn’t take much walking along the edge of the running water to get to their usual spot where his friend was waiting, knees deep in the water as he watched fish swim downstream. He looked up as Roman approached and grinned, using his magic to direct a spray of water at Roman, to which he squealed and giggled as he attempted to bat away the mist that got his hair moderately wet.
“Pat! The water’s cold!” Roman spoke in fae tongue, a language that had survived through millennia, made up of stressed vowels and quick words, certainly one that would be difficult to learn.
Patton stuck his tongue out at Roman with a giggle, using the water to guide him back to the edge of the creek, stepping up onto the solid ground and grinning at Roman “We’re still heading to the market?”
Roman pouted dramatically “You don’t wanna catch up with me?”
Patton laughed softly and bumped Roman’s shoulder with his elbow “We can catch up on the way, I want to get to the market before all the herbs are gone. Remember last time we dawdled and by the time we got there, the only thing left was coriander?” he made a face of distaste, before starting to walk away from the water, Roman quick to catch up and fall into a stroll by his side.
There was always much happening in the very centre of their fae court, festivals, dances, celebrations, you name it, but a daily staple of the centre was the marketplace. Many things were traded, vegetables, fruits, flowers, seeds, various materials like silk and wool, anything that could be considered a necessity could be found at the marketplace. It was entirely communal, any fae could take what they needed as long as they gave what they could when they could. Only last week Roman had brought over several large batches of various flowers, and a few days before that Patton had brought root vegetables he had grown by the water. It was a system everyone benefited from, and it kept the community tight knit.
This particular market would be much larger than a usual one, as it followed the new moon, a time when magic was flowing most freely and powerfully. Most fae used magic to grow their crops, so it wasn’t uncommon to use the new moon to finish off the growing period and harvest quickly in time for the market the next morning. It meant better crops for the community, and whether the individuals were close or not didn’t matter, they were a collective.
Roman and Patton talked the entire walk there, catching each other up on the events of the past day that they hadn’t seen each other. Patron spoke about the warming of the rivers and how the summer fish were finally starting to move in to their areas. Roman spoke about new trinkets he had found up in the cliff areas buried deep in the dirt and speculated what they could be used for. He swung his basket in his hands as the conversed, feeling content as the breeze dried his hair.
The warm morning had turned over into a hot afternoon, and when they arrived at the market place, many fae were taking shelter under the denser canopy of the trees, relishing in the cool shade. The market was mostly laid out in the gaps between the canopy, with the sunlight drifting over the items, although there was limited space for such a big market to rest in the sun, so some fae had the ability to peruse the items that rested in the shade on the far side of the market. Produce and materials had been organised and laid out on woven leaves held up by sticks, with a few fae walking between the lengthy rows and picking out things, carrying them in their arms.
Roman made a point, as he did each time he visited, of running straight up to where the flower seeds were, and grabbing a large handful of whatever miscellaneous ones were closest, placing them straight in his basket before running back to Patton to look through the herbs and vegetables.
“What’s that you’re using?” Patton asked curiously, pointing at his basket as he selected a large bundle of basil “I didn’t notice it before”
“It’s some kind of human thing. See, they use their colourful fabrics and sew them together with some handles so that you can carry more things at once!” Roman said with a proud smile, holding up the basket so Patton could see. The fabric was a faded lilac colour, with little white embroidered swans on it. It was obvious that it was old, with the fabric being quite worn in some areas and the embroidery being missing in others, but it was still functional. “I’ve had it laying around my home for ages but I’ve never realised what it was for until a couple moons ago”
“Well hey that’s pretty cool!” Patton said with a grin, admiring the basket before looking back at Roman “Seems easier than carrying everything in your arms”
Roman flashed a bright grin back and nodded in agreement, grabbing a couple handfuls of herbs and dried tea leaves to put in his basket along with his seeds. Patton had always been supportive of his interest in humanity, even if he didn’t have the same enthusiastic curiosity about the topic like he did. Patton was the one who helped him fix up the cottage to make it liveable, the one who speculated the uses of different human objects with him, the one who tried to learn a human language with him. Roman was really grateful for his friend, it was nice to at least have one person who didn’t find his hobby so strange.
And of course, as they walked further through the rows of produce, and passed more and more fae, it was becoming increasingly obvious to Roman that pretty much everyone didn’t find his little human knick-knacks as welcome as he did. He began to notice fae looking at his basket with strange and confused expressions, some fae whispering to their companion if they had one with them, others making a quiet, sharp noise of disapproval. Not for the first time, Roman felt their judgement, and it made him feel small.
Patton seemed to have noticed this after a while, as he turned to Roman with a concerned look in his eyes “You feeling okay Ro?”
“Hm?” Roman said, lost in his thoughts until he heard Patton speak to him “Oh… yeah, I’m fine it’s just… I think I’m weirding people out a bit, maybe I should go”
Patton frowned and shook his head “You don’t have to Ro… it’s just…” He paused, then sighed “You know they’re not used to it… all this human stuff”
Roman put on a small smile and nodded “Yeah I know, and it’s okay, I get it. The basket was probably a bad idea” he sighed a bit and looked down at the basket in his hands, his eyes tracing over the messy embroidery “I wont bring it next time… but hey I should probably get home anyways… I uh, didn’t water my flowers this morning and I don’t want them to wilt with all this sunlight”
Patton looked sceptical still, but didn’t push any further, just nodding and offering Roman a sympathetic smile “You sure you’re okay?”
Roman smiled back, but it was slightly pinched “Never been better Pat, don’t worry about me” he said, wishing him goodbye with a nod of his head before turning around and heading away from the market, avoiding the eyes of and fae that he passed. He knew that fae were usually quick to reject anything remotely related to humanity. That was just they way they were. For as long as Roman could remember, he had always been told stories of how evil humans could be, and how fae should strive to never become like them, but the books in his cottage and the stories from the elders when he was a child told him different things. They recounted the cleverness of humanity, their capacity for friendship, the way they seemed to always try and make things right. Many fae would say those stories aren’t true, that the real humanity was cold and cruel, but Roman had always been stubborn in his beliefs.
Even so, as he walked away from the market and back into the shade of the woods, he understood that even just a small, embroidered basket was a bit too ‘human’ for the common area of his court. Maybe it was better if he left his trinkets at home.
He walked back through the woods, taking a small trail that lead back in the direction of his home, slightly dejected, but trying to lift his spirits. The summer afternoon had dried up all the remnants of the previous night’s rain, but he knew that the soil would still carry enough moisture, and would probably still be more fertile that usual thanks to the new moon, so he could plant his flower seeds when he got home, then harvest some of his vegetables for tomorrows market, maybe even try cooking something instead of eating whatever fruit had ripened in his garden; he was pretty sure he had enough firewood for that. The thought of returning home to his comfortable afternoon routine did lighten the weight on his shoulders quite a bit, and any previous negative thoughts were soon forgotten as he quickened his walking pace, eager to get back home as soon as possible, until suddenly he stopped dead in his tracks.
Now, every species had instinct, this was known, but faeries instincts tended to be rather heightened, fine-tuned alongside their unique ability to adapt to any environment, and at that moment, Roman felt his instincts spike. He couldn’t explain why, but as he looked around the woods, deafeningly silent, he felt the urge to go off trail, like there was something there that he was supposed to find.
Roman wasn’t the type to ignore such a calling, so, with a final wistful look towards the direction of his cottage, he turned away from the trail, and started walking in another direction, deeper in the woods.
The young fae walked slowly and silently, his light footsteps making no noise on the leaf littered ground. He didn’t know why his instincts told him to walk this way, he didn’t know what he was supposed to be looking for, but as he got closer, he heard it; the rustling of someone walking, laboured breathing, as if they were in pain or frightened. Roman quickened his pace, still staying as silent as he could manage, and when he finally reached the clearing that the noises were coming from, he hid himself behind a tree, wanting to get a closer look before he just walked right on out. Slowly, he peered out from behind the trunk of the tree, his eyes widening at what he saw.
It was a young man, appearing to be no older that Roman, kneeling on the ground. He had a pained expression on his face, as he picked out tiny, jagged pieces of rock from his scraped up palms and knees, his eyes wincing from behind strange frames that rested on his face, an item that Roman instantly recognised from something from his collection of trinkets, a human accessory.
He didn’t believe it first, but as he took in more of the young man’s appearance – his round ears, his clothing, the complete un-fae look about him – and he had to cover his mouth with his hand to stop himself from gasping; it was a human! A human in the fae realm!
His excitement and surprise quickly faded to concern. The fae realm was not a safe space for a human, certainly not one that was injured and on his own. Roman had to do something, he had to help him, his instinct was calling out for him to help him.
Taking a deep breath to calm himself, Roman took a step out from behind the tree, speaking softly and trying his best not to startle the poor thing “Hello? Are you lost?” he said, speaking in fae tongue at first.
The human’s head shot up and his eyes widened as they landed on Roman. He scrambled to his feet and took a few steps backwards, his body tense with fear. He didn’t respond to Roman’s words with his own, so the fae figured he didn’t understand his language, and tried a different approach.
“English?” Roman rasped out, wincing at his strange accent and how foreign the words felt on his tongue. It had certainly been a long while since he had spoken English, as few fae appreciated other languages ‘invading’ their court. Back when Roman was a child, it had been taught by elders, but as newer, younger, fae stepped up to lead in their place, the human language had been largely shunned. Luckily, Roman had enlisted the help of Patton to help continue to teach each other to read and write and speak through the books he had stumbled upon, tucked away in a little wooden bookshelf in corner of his cottage, that skill becoming quite useful at a time like this. “Do… you speak.. English?”
The human promptly turned on his heel and ran.
Roman, certainly not willing to let this poor human go running off into the wilderness alone, dropped his basket of things in a hurry and immediately set off in close pursuit behind him.
