No te voy a engañar, fue toda una casualidad el empezar a atar cabos para darme cuenta de cuan especial era esta portada de Ghostface killah, una portada sin más a simple vista o incluso floja para como eran las anteriores, pero fui tirando del hilo...

El cover en cuestión es el de su cuarto trabajo de estudio "the pretty toney album" lanzado en 2004 bajo Def Jam Records, una portada que por su aspecto podría fácilmente pertenecer a la grabación de un directo en no se qué ciudad y punto... pero no!, encierra más historia que ninguna otra en su carrera.

Empecemos con el primer detalle:

Es la primera vez que el adjetivo de "killah" desaparece de la portada acompañando al nombre del artista.

Para dar con la razón de esto tenemos que retroceder 16 años y toparnos con la inspiración/homenaje que GFK rinde a uno de los padres de esta cultura.

Dough E. Fresh y su segundo álbum de 1988 "the world greatest entertainer" es la inspiración del artista y con la que a simple vista ya vemos que es casi calcada, imagino que poner el nombre completo (incluyendo "killah") no quedaría estético para ser más fiel al original.

El siguiente detalle es el momento de la foto.

Esta extraída del concierto que Jay Z ofreció en noviembre de 2003 en el Madison Square Garden de Nueva York, y no era un show cualquiera, ya que ese concierto era el que daba pie a nada más y nada menos que la retirada de la industria musical por parte de Jay z, con apariciones de los artistas de Roc-a-Fella records y colegas de otros sellos, entre los que estaba GFK, que acompaño a Beyoncé en la canción "summertime". Dicha retirada al final no se produjo, pero si dejo un bonito documento en DVD titulado "Fade to black", que fue el que me puso en la conexión con la portada de GFK.

Y como tercer y último detalle es toda la joyería con la que aparece.

No es una joyería cualquiera y no solo por el desproporcionado tamaño de las piezas si no por que son piezas que te pueden sonar de algo, reconocibles...y no te equivocas!, son propiedad de la leyenda Slick Rick, quién estaba entre bambalinas acompañando a GFK para ataviarlo en su aparición en el escenario, dejando así otra icónica impronta en la historia ya que esas cadenas han vivido la golden era del hip hop y han estado presentes en momentos para los libros.

Una vez conectados estos detalles ahora la portada se ve diferente, llena de inputs riquísimos para la cultura.
