This week in the Cottrell Digital Studio, students met two Georgia natives of different eras. Girl Scouts Founder Juliette Gordon Low met three different 2nd grade classes telling them about her childhood, what inspired her to create Girl Scouts, the challenges she faced when she lost much of her hearing, and her travels around the world.
The Founder of Georgia, James Oglethorpe, met students to discuss his life, work as a British soldier, Member of Parliament, social reformer, and military leader. Students were particularly interested Mary Musgrove, the cultural mediator and translator between Oglethorpe and Yamacraw Chief Tomochichi, who helped to negotiate agreements and maintain peaceful relations between settlers and native tribes.

Benny Andrews was a renowned artist, activist, and author from rural North Georgia who created collages with bold textures and imagery that depicted the African-American experience. He was born in a small rural farming community near Madison, Georgia where he and his family worked the cotton fields as sharecroppers. His mother wanted a good education for her children, and Benny would walk three miles to attend Burney Street High School. He was the first member in his family to graduate. He then attended Fort Valley State University on a scholarship but left school to enlist in the U.S. Air Force. After serving for four years, he studied art at the Art Institute of Chicago.

Having no previous formal training in art and never having been to an art museum, Benny’s style was created by what he had as a child. His brother, who would later become a well-known novelist, would save the pictures from magazines, newspapers, and comic books for Benny. Benny would copy the drawings and then make them his own, often with exaggerated gestures and subtle facial expressions.

During art school, Benny discovered a love for collage and the textures that could be created. After receiving his degree, he moved to New York City where he became an established artist. Over the years, Benny taught art to youth in underserved communities and also established an art program for the New York state prison system.

Here's a heartwarming story from our reading program, Gainesville Reads. Volunteer Tutor Phyllis Shalvey and her student Katie had recently read a story that involved tulips. Katie was not familiar with tulips so they looked up a picture together. During the next week, Phyllis found tulips and brought them to tutoring to help Katie develop her awareness and take time to sound out unfamiliar words. When Phyliss and Katie met for their next tutoring session, Phyllis had the tulips displayed in a vase next to an empty vase. She and Katie practiced sounding out and writing the word "tulip." Phyllis told Katie that every time she came across an unfamiliar word in their reading and took the time to sound out the word, Katie would earn a tulip in her vase. With every word she sounded out, and every tulip earned, Katie was delighted! By the end of tutoring, Katie had acquired a lovely bouquet. When it was time for games (a reward for students at the end of their session), Katie wanted to continue with her workbook to earn the remainder of the tulips. She went home with a well-deserved bouquet! Great work, Katie, and what a wonderful idea, Phyllis!

NFL power rankings, Week 16: Where do we get tickets for a Chargers vs. Saints Super Bowl?
Tumblr media
The starting quarterbacks alone would have more children than points scored in that game ... and they’d score a lot of points! Also, it’d be a good game.
1. Los Angeles Chargers: Imagine being an NFL executive contemplating the playoffs with the very real possibility that the Chargers, a team that can’t fill a tiny soccer stadium for its “home” games, could be playing deep into January. That’s got to be at least a little unnerving for the ratings watchers on Park Ave. The NFL’s best team and nobody loves them. It’s like Kirk Van Houten turned “Can I Borrow a Feeling?” into a No. 1 single, but was still, you know, Kirk Van Houten.
Further proving the complete lack of cosmic justice and absence of reason in the NFL this season, the Chargers are currently the FIFTH seed in the AFC. They beat the Chiefs and are tied for the best record in the conference, but the tiebreaker currently goes to Kansas City. That could change. MVP-candidate Philip Rivers and Co. face the Ravens this week and wrap up the season against the Broncos. The Chiefs, meanwhile, are in Seattle before a December preseason game against the Raiders at home.
2. New Orleans Saints: They’re back on top in the NFC this after grinding out a win against the failing Panthers on Monday night. Will they stay there? They have to play the Panthers one more time and next week, the Steelers, both home games. The Steelers game looks tough, but I expect them to have the offense firing on all cylinders again and thoroughly debunk the notion that the Steelers are a Super Bowl contender. New Orleans should be playing home games through the conference championship.
3. Kansas City Chiefs: That was a tough loss to the Chargers last week, so I can’t ding them too much. Patrick Mahomes is a lock for the MVP. Hell, I’m kind of starting to think that maybe you can count on these Chiefs not to suffer the usual humiliating January loss.
4. Chicago Bears: It’s Week 16, and we have the Bears — the Bears!?! — swatting away the Packers like gnats and gunning for a first-round bye. This is just and fair for a franchise that suffered though five years of self-inflicted Marc Trestman and John Fox football.
5. Los Angeles Rams: I would maybe be worried about the Rams a little bit. These last two losses weren’t just the usual “hey, you lost a tough game on a couple of bad bounces” kind of thing. As Geoff Schwartz pointed out this week, they’re turning the ball over (7/4 ratio in their last two), defenses are challenging their offensive line and winning, and they don’t seem to use the middle of the field much anymore. McVay and his well-attended facial hair can fix this, right?
6. Houston Texans: It’s hard to get too excited about beating the New York Jets in a close game, but if you are what your record is, then the Texans are a 10-4 football team. That’s pretty good! Right now, they’re the No. 2 seed in the AFC. That probably won’t change, and I think they can make some noise in the playoffs.
7. Pittsburgh Steelers: They FINALLY beat the Patriots, and they did it in December. Of course, they did manage to beat the worst version of the Patriots we’ve seen since the Matt Cassel year. But, hey, a win is a win. They’ll probably win the AFC North too, probably going 1-1 over the last two weeks, against the Saints and Bengals. The only reason for that is because the Ravens have to play the Chargers this week and finish the season against a Browns team that actually has real hope for the future.
8. New England Patriots: I just don’t know. The avocado juice doesn’t seem to be working for Tom Brady anymore. And whatever fad diet Brady’s guru has the defense on right now, is giving them a real case of diarrhea on the field. How else can you explain the just how leaky they are? The most troubling sign of all is that a team coached by Bill Belichick is on a two-game skid because he shot himself in the foot against the Dolphins. That’s very un-Belichickian.
9. Baltimore Ravens: Offenses just aren’t supposed to play this way anymore. Hell, defenses aren’t supposed to matter this much anymore either, but the Ravens have concocted some weird hybrid of 1980s football and Michael Vick. And it’s working. Can it work deep into the postseason? It just might.
10. Indianapolis Colts: They didn’t really need much from Andrew Luck this week. Instead the defense and the running game did all the work. Being able to win like that and still have Luck when you need to pull off a fourth-quarter drive could wreck a lot of dreams next month (looking at you, Kansas City).
11. Minnesota Vikings: It’s really hard to get excited about those last three seeds in the NFC. The Cowboys and Seahawks each lost a head-scratcher this week. The Vikings, meanwhile, looked a lot more like we all thought they would when we were going through the useless exercise of making preseason predictions. Will that hold, though? They get the Lions this week, so another practice game like that would at least be a good chance to roll up some reps before January.
12. Seattle Seahawks: Someday, maybe there will be no shame in losing to future MVP Nick Mullens. But right now, it’s just a sneak peak at an early playoff exit, IF they make it that far.
13. Dallas Cowboys: They got blanked by the Colts who used the very same recipe that Dallas had ridden for a five-game winning streak. Who knows with this team. They should have the NFC East wrapped up now, but that egg they laid has given the Eagles some hope and kept the Josh Johnson-led Washington NFL team alive too.
14. Tennessee Titans: The bottom part of the AFC is swarming with these kind of teams that don’t look all that great on paper, but somehow find ways to win. The best part about the Titans is that they could snuff out Washington’s playoff hopes this week.
15. Philadephia Eagles: Nick Foles is back, so I guess they’re going to the Super Bowl.
16. Cleveland Browns: No, they’re not going to make the playoffs, but they probably are going to finish with seven, maybe eight wins. AND, they’re doing it with real swagger. It’s going to be fun to watch this team next season. The only thing that can dampen their hopes for 2019 is keeping Gregg Williams around.
As for the other 16 NFL teams, we have a very nice mock draft for you.

Indoor Fun for Florida’s Nature Coast
Do you wonder what to do when it's raining and humid, but you need to get out and have some fun. Even when it is sunny, hot, and humid in Florida's Nature Coast, one can get a little stir-crazy. Most of our nature coast activities are outdoors, so what is there to do? Meet Diana Marsh from Paint the Town Citrus. She is the heartbeat of four businesses in the Crystal River Mall and her energy and charisma provided a solution for our area's need for indoor fun. Paint the Town Citrus is a large paint and sip store, where you can visit any day between one and five p.m., except Tuesdays, to create one of hundreds of paintings in the colors you want, guided by an artist. This place takes the “paint and sip” concept to a higher level by providing the ability to choose from hundreds of predesigned paintings, and to customize the colors of your creation to meet your décor.
Tumblr media
You can have painting parties of up to 50 people at Paint the Town Citrus. Each person can create the same painting or a different one. There is the ability to have parties of up to fifty people, complete with beer, wine, sodas and food, creating a painting of your choice. A well-established local artist will be your instructor and all the materials needed for each guest to create their very own painting are included. There are literally hundreds of paintings to choose from. Here is a link to most of what’s available.
Tumblr media
There are classes by local and renown artists. Here is Florida Highwaymen artist Curtis Arnett and two of his students with their creations. Paint the Town Citrus also has “Paint Your Own Pet” Nights, “Bob Ross" Oil classes, Florida landscape class with Florida Highwayman Curtis Arnett, paint with coffee class, traditional oil painting class, watercolor classes and many more. Their schedule is here. All classes include all the supplies needed to take home a 16” x 20” special project. The Nature Coast’s largest art gallery is located in the store also, featuring subjects galore from animals to cartoons to landscapes and people. There are over 2,500 pieces of art available – some from famous artists such as the Florida Highwaymen and others from the local artists that provide instruction in the store. This slideshow requires JavaScript.
Nikki B’s All-American Restaurant
In the Crystal River Mall is a food court, with Nikki B’s All-American Restaurant offering custom hot dogs such as the Detroit Coney, featuring a Dearborn natural casing hot dog with Detroit style Coney sauce, mustard and chopped onions on a toasted bun. It tastes just like the ones on Grand Avenue in Detroit. There’s the Flint dog, the Chicago dog featuring a Vienna beef frank with relish, pickle, tomato, sports peppers and celery salt in a poppyseed bun, a New Yorker, Green Bay, Cleveland, Seattle and Atlanta dog, which is a bacon-wrapped hot dog with spicy BBQ sauce and cole slaw on a hoagie roll.
Tumblr media
This is a true Detroit Coney Dog from Nikki B's All-American Restaurant. Tastes just like home. When first hearing about Nikki B’s, the skeptic came out. Having been disappointed at many restaurants that claim a true Detroit Coney, this food court location hit the mark! Root beer floats, make your own dogs, “Poutine,” Greek salad, and several other regional favorites make a fantastic menu that was served with attention to detail. Fresh ingredients and handcrafted hot dogs made a fan out of me. Creating a painting takes time, so a meal can provide a nice break. At Paint the Town Citrus, they let you take as long as it takes to finish your masterpiece. However, painting in a store may not be the best thing to do with children who like to move and touch when they create.
Citrus Coastal Creations
Coastal Creations is a great place to take younger people for a fun, creative session. With spin art, sand art, sticker art, plaster painting, and make your own jewelry projects available for walk-ins, your child (or inner child) will feel accomplished when they create their own 3d masterpiece.
Tumblr media
Kits to create masterpieces
Tumblr media
Locally made nature coast crafts
Tumblr media
Art projects provide a great outlet for active kids.
Tumblr media
Arts, crafts and gifts are plentiful.
Tumblr media
Manatee crafts too. Citrus Coastal Creations carries all types of Nature Coast crafted gifts for sale also. Beautiful wearables, linens, jewelry, home décor and more from local crafters are priced nicely so you can shop while your partner-in-crime creates. There are many amazing gifts at Coastal Creations.
TG Stylz
Then there is TG Stylz, an upscale but relaxed salon where you can get pampered, puffed, beautified and more – and shop the lovely boutique full of clothing and accessories. TG Stylz is a full-service salon offering spa services like facials, manicures, pedicures, eyelash extensions, permanent makeup, waxing, and even Invisablend® hair thinning treatments.
Tumblr media
A nice entrance to a casual but professional salon at TJ Stylez. Creative stylists and a wonderful clothing boutique make a great combo. Their creativity with hair is phenomenal – color, highlights, cuts, Brazilian blowouts, extensions, dreads, braids, Ombre color and Up dos. But the clothing boutique makes TG Stylz an even more wonderful find for when you want to look your best from head to toe. Go ahead and stop in to shop and while you are there talk to a stylist about the look you have in mind and “get ‘er done” with style.
My "Paint Your Pet" experience at Paint the Town Citrus
Tumblr media
Genesis, my young filly being silly. I have a six-month old filly named Genesis. She is so adorable and when I found out you could bring a picture of your pet to Paint the Town Citrus, I wanted to paint “Gennie.” I called 352-601-1344 and talked to “Autum,” a local artist who provides Bob Ross painting instruction as well as sells some of her artwork at the onsite gallery.
Tumblr media
One of Paint the Town Citrus' artists draws my photo like a paint by number. I drove to the Crystal River Mall, just north of the city of Crystal River. When I arrived, I was given a smock and offered a beverage. Meanwhile, my photo was taken to the back room where an artist quickly rough sketched the image onto a 16 x 20 canvas and printed a copy for Autum who would guide me.
Tumblr media
Rough sketch with background painted. I sat down and was given a palette of color on a plate and a handful of brushes. The canvas reminded me of a paint-by-number project of my youth, except there were no numbers and my colors were hand-mixed my Autum.
Tumblr media
We had a printed copy of the picture for Autum to guide me with. She mixed the paints for me. Painting each section with the mixed paint and the appropriate brush, guided with Autum’s technique suggestions, I was comfortable and happy making something that now graces my home and I proudly show to family and friends. About mid-way, I was offered food because it is part of the “all inclusive” package that Paint the Town Citrus offers. I had eaten lunch before arriving but was talked into a fried ice cream from Nikki B’s. Peaches and cream was the variety I chose, and it was so delicious that I plan to visit just to enjoy that dessert again. After dessert, I always want coffee and that was gladly provided.
Tumblr media
Delicious dessert was included in my "All inclusive package." This is Nikki B's Fried Ice Cream with peaches and cream toppings. Yes. It is as good as it looks! Honestly, I felt a bit like a celebrity with all the service. I continued brushing my canvas, turning it to make application easier and talking with my guide. Then she took the canvas and blow dried it! This was so I could make a few final strokes to add texture and light, completing the portrait and – WOW – I am so happy with the results!
Tumblr media
Ta! Da! Here is Genesis by me, created with love at Paint the Town Citrus with guidance from Autum. (See how it matches my wall?) When I left, I was floating on air because I was so proud of my creation. It looks great in my house and I am already planning to go back and do it again in a couple of weeks for another pet (We have 6.)
The Crystal River Mall
All four of these businesses are located in the Crystal River Mall, 1801 US 19 just north of the city of Crystal River. This mall is primarily home to small businesses and has only a Rural King anchor store and a Regal Cimemas movie theater. The center of the mall has a whimsical sail-themed ceiling and there are many events held here, from Trick-or-treat nights to Art Walks. The mall got a bad reputation when its former anchor stores closed, but the owners have stepped up to make it nice again. Read the full article

The Top Guidelines On Significant Elements For Mortgage Broker Melbourne
