Heads Up- Part 10 (Joseph x Bust! Caesar)
▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪▪
With Joseph going to university every couple of days, and Suzi visiting often but still usually sleeping at her own home, there were days that Caesar was left home alone.
Joseph had invested in extra door locks to keep him safe, makeshift mini-elevators to help the bodiless bust get up and down the kitchen and living room tables, and put up canvasses and customized paint holders to encourage his fondness for painting to pass the time.
Caesar was a great painter-- especially for someone with no hands.
With much practice in holding a paintbrush in his mouth, something that Caesar found much easier as opposed to colored pencils that broke when pressed too hard, Joseph's artistic masterpieces had begun producing masterpieces of his own. Simple, abstract scribbles at first, but over time began to make art of the things he saw around the house. Still lifes of tables, furniture, windows, in his own crude, mouth-scribbly style.
Today was one such day. Joseph was away at the art school, working on projects of his own. And Suzi hadn't called for today, and probably wasn't coming for a while.
And so Caesar spent his time painting. But he was tired of the things within the confines of the apartment, and opted for a new medium.
Pulling the blinds of the window open with his teeth, Caesar exposed the view of the vacant lot behind Joseph's house. One that was somewhat still a wild region, overgrown with grasses, with a few sparse trees, and further into the horizon, the skyline of the big city with towering skyscrapers that seemed like mere toys from such a distance.
A smile crept across Caesar's face. This seemed like a perfect muse for another painting.
And as Joseph created art with a purpose, he wondered if this was his.
---------
Suzi looked over at the bag Joseph had given her.
She was in her own home, an apartment somewhat smaller than Joseph's. The post-graduate artist hadn't really done very much in the past year, and her house reflected it: it was quite a mess, with many boxes, items and inexplicable odds and ends cluttering every tabletop and shelf, a problem compounded by the artist's somewhat scatterbrained nature at times.
She sat on her couch, typing away at her laptop. She'd been very curious about the past few days about where exactly that design on the bag came from-- definitely a Mesoamerican influence, perhaps some sort of mystical trinket from long ago.
It had been the bag that Joseph had found in his attic, that had contained the lump of clay that had become Caesar. As Joseph had said before, it didn't seem like a particularly special material at first: yet now, given that it literally was alive, there certainly was something unique about it. Especially given that all other clay they attached to Caesar, in their failed attempts to give him a body, had invariably remained lifeless and cold.
And as she scrolled through pictures on her laptop, she happened upon something extraordinary.
A site cataloguing local folklore, with details that seemed oddly familiar.
Legends told in ancient Central America about sacred soils that could channel strange energies. One myth, in particular, caught her attention: a tale of a talented artist who, in her sheer devotion to detail in her work, managed to usher in spirits of inspiration to take new life into her work.
Idols that harbored the souls of the ancestors that led them to convene with their successors generations on.
Suzi scoffed. This seemed like strange superstitious magic, wasn't it?
Yet deep down, as much of a mature, rational woman as she was, a small part deep within her had always believed in magic, wished to believe. Perhaps it was the hopeful, wide-eyed child within her now enveloped in the shell of a responsible adult, that sometimes shone through when she was around people she was comfortable, like Joseph, and now, Caesar too.
Perhaps that was why she wasn't too surprised about Caesar when she first met the living sculpture in Joseph's apartment a couple of weeks earlier.
Because a bit of her had always believed in magic-- and Caesar's very existence served only to confirm it.
---------
Joseph strolled around the art gallery of the university, beholding in wonder at the vast, museum-like halls bearing the works of its many previous students.
Statues, sculptures, paintings and murals of all shapes and styles adorned the walls, platforms and shelves of nearly every corner of the building's interior. Everything was art, they said, and the masterpieces certainly reflected it.
And as much as Joseph was in awe of the beauty of the gallery, something made him uneasy, as he looked at them, especially the sculpted statues that resided in glass cases, carved in eternal repose with their lifeless eyes gazing blankly into empty space.
Would this have been Caesar's fate?
Joseph couldn't bear the thought of Caesar, his roommate, his friend and companion, spending the rest of his existence like this.
What kind of life would that be?
Joseph's disturbed thoughts were interrupted when he bumped into somebody, as he was too preoccupied with the art to look where he was going.
"Oh, I'm sorry, young man," said an old, throaty voice, with a prominent Italian accent. "You need to be careful around here too."
"Apologies, Mr. Zeppeli," Joseph said awkwardly, with an uncertain scratch of his head.
Mr. William Zeppeli was one of the oldest professors in the university, and had long taught the class on the subject of three-dimensional art. Instantly recognizable by his trademark moustache and top hat, Mr. Zeppeli had mentored Joseph in his first year in the university, and was quite familiar with him.
"I'm glad to see you've come so far, Mr. Joestar," Mr. Zeppeli said with a pat on Joseph's back. "I believe you would be graduating this year, are you not?"
Joseph smiled proudly. "I sure will be, sir!"
Mr. Zeppeli gave a warm chuckle. "That's the spirit!" he said. "So, the final project is due next month. What is your grand masterpiece?"
"A bust sculpture," Joseph said impulsively, before realizing he probably shouldn't have said it out loud.
A proud, yet solemn smile emerged on Mr. Zeppeli's weathered features. "Come with me," he told Joseph.
He led Joseph towards the hall of statues, where Joseph was amazed to see a vast array of clay figures, of people, objects and places, all impressively detailed even for him. Sculptures of birds in flight, each feather intricately carved in astonishing perfection. Miniature models of famous landmarks around the world, such as a replica of the Colosseum in Rome. Faces of people molded in clay, so expressive they seemed they almost could speak.
Something that, at this point, wouldn't have surprised Joseph anymore.
"He would have loved to meet you," Mr. Zeppeli said woefully. "I've seen some of the sculptures you've made before and they remind me of him so much."
"W-who?" Joseph asked, curious at the person Mr. Zeppeli had referred to.
"My grandson," replied the old teacher with a bittersweet note in his voice.
"He went to this school a decade ago, and was one of the best students this institution had ever known. All these, the figures you see before you, are his creations, and I...I am proud to call him my grandson," said Mr. Zeppeli, as he wiped away a tear.
The old professor gestured to a small sign next to the case displaying his grandson's masterpieces. "He was a jolly fellow, if not without a strange sense of humor. You two might have become friends."
Joseph looked closely at the sign. There was something very familiar.
And as its contents sank in, his heart nearly stopped.
"IN MEMORY OF ANTHONIO ZEPPELI (1983-2008), GONE BUT FOREVER REMEMBERED," said the caption.
But what captured his attention, and struck him to the very center of his being, was the picture of the late artist displayed on the sign.
He had no pink cheek marks, and he, of course, had a body.
But he was, unmistakably and otherwise identically, Caesar.
"Is--is this him?" gasped Joseph in disbelief.
"I guess you'd recognize that face," Mr. Zeppeli gave a faint laugh. "Remember that statue of Julius Caesar displayed here, several years ago? He based it off himself. That isn't even remotely close to what the real Julius Caesar looked like, he was a talented, if strange, boy who found it amusing to stick his own likeness onto his art."
Julius Caesar, Joseph thought. His reference.
He felt a strange sensation, as if his whole world was suddenly shattered, and was slowly piecing itself back together like a jigsaw puzzle, into a new reality that seemed way too fateful for his peace of mind.
"Uh...uh...I just suddenly remembered I have a class to go to," said a flustered Joseph, quickly conjuring up an alibi. "See you later, Mr. Zeppeli!" he said, and promptly dashed off in a hurry.
-------
"Jojo? You would not believe what I just found," Suzi said, as she entered Joseph's house later that evening.
"Well, you wouldn't believe what I found out today," Joseph replied, with a shell-shocked look on his face.
Suzi was taken aback. "Looks like you've seen some serious stuff," she gasped. "Y-you go first."
"Do you know a certain Anthonio Zeppeli?" Joseph asked her.
"As in...the student who died a while back?" she said. "I've...I've heard of him, he was talked about a couple of times by my friends one year ahead of your batch. And about...what happened to him."
Caesar, who at just the right moment, had been bouncing by, was intrigued. "Happened to who?" he asked, pausing in his tracks.
Suzi sat down on the sofa. "They say he was a student from a few batches prior. He was a talented sculptor who was great at working with clay, marble, concrete..."
"Yeah, I've seen his stuff," interjected Joseph.
"Well, the thing is, they told he had been commissioned to carve a mural into a hotel's front lobby, nearly ten years ago," she told. "He was perched up on a ladder, chipping away at the wall, when suddenly, he broke a support on a stone ornament, shaped like a cross--"
"--and he was so startled when it began to topple, that he stumbled right off his ladder, fell to his death...and then the stone cross fell and landed right on top of him."
Joseph winced. That sounded like a terrible way to go.
"Well, there's something you wouldn't believe," Joseph said, pulling out a yearbook he'd borrowed from the library. Look at his face."
Suzi leaned closer for a look, and gasped in shock.
"I'd never seen what he'd looked like, but...but..."
"Caesar. It's you."
"What the hell are you talking about?" Caesar exclaimed. "I can't see anything from down here!"
Suzi picked up the bust with some effort and rested him onto the tabletop. He hopped over to the book to check out what all the commotion was about--
--and was silent for an uncomfortably long time.
"See, this is what I was gonna tell you," Suzi said. "I'd been reading on the design on the bag that you found Caesar's clay in. There were legends in ancient Mesoamerica that artists who were talented enough would be able to usher in spirits of predescessors into idols of a special sacred clay to serve as inspiration," she said.
"And maybe, just maybe, Caesar is alive-- because he is Anthonio Zeppeli's soul."
"So am I a ghost?!" Caesar screamed in terrified confusion, hopping backwards a few bounces from sheer terror. "I'm a dead man in a clay head?!" he cried, disturbed by the revelation.
"More like a reincarnation," Suzi explained. "The legends told that they became spirit guides to their creators, that they held the wisdom and knowledge of the past, but remembered little of their past lives-- rather, they carried over some traits, but were their own, unique person."
"Did they have bodies?" Joseph asked right off the bat.
"Yes... you were just unlucky to not have enough clay," she added.
Caesar groaned in frustration.
"You know, I honestly wouldn't have believed some ancient mythology," Joseph said, "but given I've been living with a talking, walking sculpture--"
"Not exactly walking," Caesar corrected.
"...er, bouncing, sculpture for the last couple of weeks, I'd take any explanation at this point." he admitted.
"I think he chose you, Joseph," Suzi said with a smile.
Caesar looked at Anthonio's picture in the yearbook, and saw only himself. The same green eyes, blond hair, unmistakable face. He lacked the pink cheek patches, however, which Joseph admitted he'd tacked on to Caesar just for kicks. Anthonio had a body.
Could he really be Anthonio Zeppeli returned from the dead? Caesar pondered. If that was true, he remembered nothing of being Anthonio.
The idea of having once been a living human unsettled Caesar.
But at the same time, he couldn't help but feel oddly vindicated.
He'd wondered often recently why he even existed, as just another of Joseph's art. What use did he serve?
But now he wondered, upon hearing of Suzi's tale-- maybe this was his purpose.

Toilet-Bound Hanako-Kun and the Power of Visuals
Unique animation and background art can be selling points when it pertains to whether an individual decides to watch a new series. Although great story writing and characters can create an amazing series, it is difficult to know these two qualities without first watching the anime itself (as well as reading the light novel or manga). The easiest way to impress a person into watching a show without any prior knowledge is to have an interesting art style. This sort of technique is used in more than just Japanese animation, but also in other countries such as The United States with Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Loving Vincent. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse brings a comic book to life by using frames and onomatopoeia words, while Loving Vincent was hand-painted using stop-motion. With these concepts, movies that would have been a simple crossover and a documentary would be dull and not cause more people to watch and marvel at what is to come. The anime and manga of Toilet-Bound Hanako-Kun do just that; the animation and background art draws people in to enjoy what is to come.

 The Impact of Visuals
As with other art forms, anime has its general groups where you can expect a certain art style to go along with the concept; seinen (mature themes) are often done with more darker schemes and muted styles, shounen (aimed at boys) is brighter and smoother, hentai (animated porn) focuses on exposure and shojo (aimed at girls) is bubbly and sparkly. While there are these general groups, there are subgroups that contain their own styles, and even then, there are always exceptions. As mentioned before, Toilet-Bound Hanako-Kun is one of these exceptions.
As stated on Mangakalot, Toilet-Bound Hanako-Kun is a shounen that includes comedy, supernatural, and school life themes. With these themes, the first thought would be to compare this to shows such as Noragami and Natsume's Book of Friends. Both Noragami and Natsume's Book of Friends are stereotypical looking anime with thin lines, dry colors, and standard scenery. While these shows are impressive with their storytelling and inclusive to supernatural myths, the amount of uniqueness and creatively put into the art style does not instantly draw the viewers in.

Although I can go on and describe Toilet-Bound Hanako-Kun’s animation and background, James Beckett from AnimeNewsNetwork summaries it perfectly: “The environments feel hand-crafted, like they were plucked out of an especially evocative picture-book, and the way the show uses overlays of comic panels to break up some of the gags and establishing shots makes everything even more painterly.” This kind of exceptional work is common with the producers and directors of the show. As reported from AnimeNewsNetwork, Studio Lerche employed director Masaomi Andō, writer Yasuhiro Nakanishi, character designer Mayuka Itou, and animation producer Yūji Higa. Both Masaomi Andō and Yūji Higa have previously collaborated for a child-like show, Hakumei and Mikochi. With this team, they would go forward to produce another amazing series.

There are three important factors that go into making Toilet-Bound Hanako-Kun series’ art special: manga frames, vibrant colors, and creative lighting.
 Manga Frames
When discussing this subject, it is important to remember its origins. When reading manga, the frames and panels are outlined boxes stacked against each other that contain drawings and words. This concept is common across manga and comics alike but employing this type of style of boxes containing drawings is not common in anime. As referenced at the beginning, the American movie Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse uses the same notion with it being a parody towards superhero comic books. Toilet-Bound Hanako-Kun does this in a similar fashion with its manga-inspired animation.
(Below will be images for this example) Episode 6 of Toilet-Bound Hanako-Kun features many examples of manga frames, but for this example, we are focusing on a screencap from time 3:42. The screencap has two visual planes, in the background is an open book with a red page reading “Future” while in the foreground is Yashiro Nene’s, the main character, face being shown within white manga-panel borders. This image shows an interesting way to convey Yashiro talking while still being able to see what she was talking about on-screen. This scene is comparative to the one drawn in the manga. In the manga, the panel that has the book and “Future” is read first, then the next frame has Yashiro talking about what she is looking at. The way the producers decided to adapt to this scene is interesting; they were able to see the original concept and impact, but also integrated the feeling of being able to still see the first image while also continuing to read/watch on.

 Vibrant Colors
Different anime may use color schemes to enhance themes, specific events, or symbolism. Color is everywhere in anime, and it is important for the animators to place certain colors in places to bring meaning or impact to the watchers. A popular example of this is in JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure where the color scheme inverts at random yet important times during the episodes, which brings about the weird and unique flare that this series holds. A series does not need wild color changes to be recognizable.
The very first noticeable feature of Toilet-Bound Hanako-Kun is how bright and lively the art looks. James Beckett’s description that this show looks like a picture book is accurate in this sense. Children’s books often have bold and contrasting colors to allow for easy viewing and longer attention spans. Rachel Pancare wrote a Sciencing article title, “How Do Bright Colors Appeal to Kids?” which states, “Bright colors catch young children's eyes because they help kids to distinguish objects from one another in their field of vision. Children spend more time looking at bright colors as opposed to looking at muted shades or pastels.” While this is true, some of the tones and circumstances within the show are not child-friendly, and even then, the coloration and art style are still able to bring the fear that is needed.

 Creative Lighting
Lighting can be used in many different forms; it is used to brighten a landscape, a special character or object, or to create a certain atmosphere. In the average anime, lighting may not be diverse but may be only used to brighten the landscape so that the viewers can watch. There would be no major variation or casting that would change the mood of the scene. At times, there is seemingly no direct light source, but just everything is filled with brightness by either the sun, indoor lights, or for no reason. If the setting is at night, a streetlight may light up a character but that is seemingly the only option. Incredible anime typically takes a dive into using light sources and shadows dynamically, especially when there is a dramatic scene or an object that needs to be emphasized.
Toilet-Bound Hanako-Kun possesses the traits of having various light sources and accurately placed shadows, but there is another layer that is added. An integral part of the art style is that light can take a variety of shapes, but usually hexagonal. The pictures below demonstrate this; a light that emanates from the lamps and the lenses flare are hexagons, providing a creative change other than the usual faded circle of light surrounding an object. The other light sources are the light blue, glowing gems and the sunlight from the window. These two light sources provide the rest of the scene to be lit but within proportion to how bright the source is. Shadows are used accurately as well, causing darkness on the two character’s backs as well as slopping downward on the stall doors. These small additions can contribute greatly to the finished product and can transform how a scene is seen and the feelings that are derived from it.

 Conclusion
The three essential components to Toilet-Bound Hanako-Kun are creative lighting, vibrant colors, and manga frames. Analyzing and discovering what goes into a series can improve your experience and create a deeper devotion to the content. With this being said, not all shows that have the typical animation style and dull background are bad, but that they need to be analyzed in other areas and be appreciated in those. Toilet-Bound Hanako-Kun deserves praise and attention for its art style, and studios should look after this show and put forth the effort to make more series like this.
When considering what new series, you may watch or if you would want to stop watching a series, stop and think for a moment, “Does this art style impress me? Was the effort of the animators shown?” If the answers to the questions is “yes,” then I recommend that you follow through and continue watching that series. While storytelling and character development are important aspects to a show, there is more to the story than that. So, take a minute, turn the volume off on your favorite anime and watch—does the art tell a story? Does it make you laugh, scared, sad, or any emotion? Looking out for these feelings is important, and so is analyzing why this show may look so wonderful, because the smallest details matter the most, and it shows the dedication and love the creators have for the series.

10 Tips for Designing Logos That Don’t Suck
So you’re designing a logo. It sounds like an easy enough task, right? Draw a circle, type in the company name and you’re done (I’ve literally heard a designer suggest that very process). Unfortunately, if you’re really worth the money the client is paying you, there’s a lot more to it than that.
There are a million people in the logo design industry today dishing out crappy logos in bulk for crowdsourcing sites. How do you as a serious professional stand out from the crowd and produce quality logos that don’t suck? Read on to find out.
Are you in the middle of a logo design project? Don’t forget to check out our in-depth guide on how to design a logo!
Pro Tip: Use a Logo Template
If you’re looking for a quick start with a logo design, experimenting with a logo template can be a great initial step. It can help give you a starting point for your logo design, on which you can build and adapt.
Envato Elements has a collection of over 6,000 logo templates that you can access for a low monthly price of $17 (as well as icons, photos, graphic templates, and more). Here are a few of our favorites!
1. Use a Visual Double Entendre
Some of my favorite logos in the world utilize a technique that I like to call a visual double entendre, which is an overly fancy way to say that it has two pictures wrapped into one through clever interpretation of a concept or idea.
The WinePlace logo below is a perfect example.
This logo takes on the shape of a thumbtack, which suggests “location” or “place,” but it also clearly looks like an upside down wine glass. Logo designs that use this technique come off as clever and memorable. Viewers love the little mind game that you’re playing and are more prone to appreciate a design because of it.
In the past, we’ve put together a post of clever negative space logos like the one below. Check it out if you love this type of logo design as much as I do!
2. Color is Vitally Important
One of the most important considerations for logo design is the color palette. This is not a superficial decision, color carries meanings and communicates ideas.
Sometimes you’re pegged to the colors of a brand, but other times you’ll have the freedom to explore. I love the rich palette used in the Zion logo below.
The colors here grab you and pull you in, they bring life to the illustration and give further context to the shape of the landscape. That being said, remember that a good logo is versatile and will still function well in grayscale:
Beyond a grayscale version, I like to also provide clients with a true single color version, using only black and negative space. This would be a little tricky with the logo above, but definitely possible.
Always consider what it is that the logo will be used for and whether or not the various use cases require different versions.
3. Avoid the Cliché
Every few years or so, some new fads come along in logo design. I personally love to study design trends and you might even find me suggesting jumping onto a few bandwagons to keep up with the times, but with logos, I just hate it when a bunch of designers use the same idea over and over.
The basic archetype above is being used again and again in logo design right now and it’s getting old fast. Why not use a design that you actually thought up yourself rather than ripping off what everyone else is doing?
We have an entire article dedicated to showcasing logo design clichés, be sure to check it out to make sure you’re not guilty of uninspired logo design.
4. Make it Ownable
I don’t believe that “ownable” is a real word, but you nevertheless hear it quite a bit in marketing (marketers love to make up words). The concept is definitely an important one that ties closely to the previous tip.
Rather than following the herd and using a cliché design, you should instead strive for something that is uniquely recognizable. I’ve always appreciated the Evernote logo in this regard:
It’s really just an elephant head, which doesn’t sound like a very unique concept. However, the way it’s drawn with the curled trunk and page fold in the ear makes it instantly recognizable.
As you’re designing logos, consider whether or not your design is generic or unique. Is it likely that others will produce something similar? Remember, your first idea is typically your most generic (it’s also everyone else’s first idea). Try filling a notebook page or two with some rough sketches before choosing which ideas to pursue further.
5. Everybody Loves Custom Type
While we’re on the subject of being unique, there’s almost nothing that can give your logo a unique feel quite like some awesome custom lettering.
Too often we see logo design as simply a trip to the font menu to see which typeface makes the company name look best. If someone is paying you to “design” their logo, they probably expect you to put a little more effort into it.
Too often we see logo design as simply a trip to the font menu.
Custom type helps to ensure that your unique logo will stay that way. Lowlife designers will rip off your work in a heartbeat if they discover which typeface you’re using, but it takes some real skill to mimic custom hand-drawn type!
Keep in mind though that if your logo is famous enough, people will always try to rip it off. This certainly holds true for my favorite script logo:
The awesome Coca-Cola script has been stolen countless times in awkward parodies throughout the last few decades.
6. Keep it Simple Stupid
Let’s face it, not everyone can bust out a beautiful, hand-drawn script on a whim. Just because you’re a designer doesn’t mean you’re an awesome illustrator or typographer (though it helps). If you fit this description, fear not, there’s nothing preventing you from making awesome logos.
In this situation, remember these four powerful words: keep it simple stupid! Simple but powerful logos permeate the business world and always prove to be the best icons for standing the test of time.
In considering how to construct one of these types of logos, let’s discuss the Apple logo. The silhouette of an apple is nothing special or memorable:
It’s that missing bite that takes it to the next level. It gives the logo character, makes it unique, and drives the meaning deeper (computers and bytes, get it?). Without the bite, the apple is boring, with it, the apple is suddenly iconic.
Always think about how you can go that extra mile and turn your boring logos into unmistakable brand marks.
7. Consider Proportion & Symmetry
Some people can get carried away with discussions of proportion and symmetry (see the new Pepsi logo pitch), but if we strip out the crazy, there’s still some important lessons here. Consider the new Twitter logo as an example:
Here circles aren’t used to convince you of some strange cosmic tale that makes no sense, they’re simply used as a guide to create a well balanced logo with consistent curves and arcs.
Despite the fact that the bite seems to violate the symmetry of the Apple logo above, if we dig deeper we can see that there was still a lot of through put into proportion and symmetry here (image source):
8. Think About Negative Space
Along the same vein as a double entendre is the age-old trick of utilizing the negative space in a logo in some clever way. The industry standard example of this technique is the FedEx logo and its hidden arrow.
Don’t see it yet? Keep looking, it’s there. That’s what I love about this logo, the use of negative space is so subtle. Most people in the U.S. see the FedEx logo daily or weekly for years as it drives by on the side of countless trucks and they never even notice the arrow.
Logopond is chock full of great logo designs that utilize negative space in a cool way. Check out the example below, which blends together the idea of bull horns and a wine glass.
9. Passive vs. Active
One interesting facet of logo design that I’ve been considering a lot lately is the concept of instilling motion or a sense of activity into a logo. This isn’t always appropriate (such as with the Apple logo), but sometimes it can really give a logo the boost it needs, both from a visual and conceptual standpoint.
As an example, let’s look again to the Twitter logo. Way back in the early days, the bird went from sitting perched and passive to becoming active and taking flight.
In the most recent iteration, they took this concept even further by pointing the bird in an upward direction to indicate that it’s climbing into the air rather than floating along the same old trajectory.
A sense of motion is especially important when it comes to logos with mascots. The image of the marlin below doesn’t depict the fish merely lying still, instead, it’s leaping into the air in a victorious pose.
This concept even extends to typically inanimate objects. Consider how much better the logo below portrays the concept of “rough house” by instilling a sense of motion.
10. Know What it Means
It’s great when you as a designer can show a client how much thought and reasoning went into the logo that you produced for them.
Every good logo has a story. Far beyond simply a pretty sketch, strong logos are filled with meaning, both obvious and hidden. We discussed this in several cases above. The FedEx logo’s arrow indicates moving forward and making deliveries, the Apple logo has a “byte” missing, and the Twitter bird is flying in an upward trajectory.
Half the time I wonder if logo designers don’t come up with the meaning after the logo is already produced, but regardless, it’s great when you as a designer can show a client how much thought and reasoning went into the logo that you produced for them.
Clients might think that all they want is something fresh and cool, but if you instead provide a logo that ties into the company’s core values and mission, you’ll blow their minds and they’ll love you for it.

Melrose Avenue Shapes up with Bend Goods’ First Ever Showroom
The following post is brought to you by Bend Goods. Our partners are hand-picked by the Design Milk team because they represent the best in design.
While wire furniture isn’t a new concept, in our opinion, no one does it better than our friends at Bend Goods. Founded by Gaurav Nanda in 2010, the brand’s collection of original furniture and accessories is instantly recognizable in homes, offices, hotels, retail spaces, and trade shows all over the world. With its signature playful designs and colorful finishes, the collection can insert itself into any space of any kind of style (and if you don’t trust us, a quick Google search will back this statement).
Bend Goods has undergone many changes, including a name change, expanding beyond seating, and setting up office headquarters in a home rather than an office (appropriately called the Bend House – see our video from the first Bend House). However, all those milestones seem to pale in comparison to their most exciting undertaking yet, a brand new showroom and studio space! Visitors to Los Angeles’ design district will want venture down Melrose Avenue a little further east to visit the vibrant new storefront. Outfitted with different vignettes on every wall, the showroom feels like 1970s game show set if it wasn’t for the modern Bend furniture adding the proverbial exclamation mark in each corner.
It’s been eight years since Gaurav founded Bend Goods, so we caught up with him to learn more about Bend Goods’ journey, the changes he’s experienced in the retail and design industry, and what the opening of brand’s first ever showroom means to him. Keep reading for his golden nuggets of wisdom…
Why did you pick neighborhood and storefront?
For one thing, it is close to my house. I can walk to the showroom :). But really, we looked all over Los Angeles for three years until we found a spot that felt like a good home for Bend. The building itself is an old warehouse space with bow truss ceilings located on Melrose Ave, so it has a ton of character. Growing up, I would watch the TV show Melrose Place and that’s how I became familiar with that street. Never would I have ever dreamt that I’d have had a storefront on Melrose Ave.
For those who don’t know, how did the name Bend Goods come about?
Bend got its name from the bending of wires. We originally were called Bend Seating because we concentrated on chairs but we quickly realized we wanted to do other things so we changed our name to Bend Goods. Each piece is machine-molded and undergoes upwards of 400 handmade spot-welds—a process we refer to as bending. Each bend is carefully arranged to ensure structural strength. The angles of the back, the curves of the seat and the closeness of the wires are placed a quarter inch apart for comfort.
When did you decide that it was the right time to open a showroom?
I started the company as an e-commerce platform out of the living room in my loft in Marina Del Rey. As my team grew the idea of needing more space grew as well. We decided that renovating a house and making Bend a full design lifestyle experience was the way to go. A house brought a sense of comfort that you don’t get from an office. After a few years in a house we realized our needs were growing, we were running out of room and it was time to put on our “big boy pants” and open a showroom. We needed a photo studio and a place to actually design and build prototypes. Visibility was another major factor—opening a showroom on a high traffic street was great for brand awareness. People can stop in or at least drive by, see our product, and hopefully visit us online or in person.
Showroom Before
Showroom After
What’s one of the challenges you’ve had with opening the store?
We had to do a lot of work to the showroom space: knock down walls, build new walls, paint ceilings and floors. During the construction phase, we hung gold streamers covering all outside the building, with no signage. The gold color would fade to silver and then we hung other colors on top of it. It was fun to build some mystery in the neighborhood of what was behind the metallic curtain. Finally, we removed the streamers and people have commented it was like a big reveal to the community.
Have you worked on other stores before opening this one? What lessons or learning curves can you share?
This is the first store I have ever designed. I have renovated homes before, so a lot of the experience I gained from that helped me on the designing and constructing of the showroom. The biggest lesson for me is to make decisions fast to keep it moving. If something doesn’t feel right, don’t sit on it, make the change and move on.
What’s your favorite item in the store right now?
One of my favorite items is the Cloud Bench (pictured above). We created a special installation called the Cloud Room made special for the Cloud Bench where we have clouds hanging from the ceiling. We wanted the showroom to be an Instagram-able wonderland and my favorite spot is the Cloud Room.
Is there a theme to the showroom collection this season?
I wanted the showroom to be a fun, inviting space but yet dramatic. We first added tall archways, which added a lot of architectural character. Some of the archways we wanted to be able to section off at times, so we added sliding doors to them. The way the sliding doors were moving reminded me of game show set in the 1970s, which became a big part of the inspiration for the showroom. There was always a dramatic reveal in the 1970s game show and I wanted to create that effect in the showroom. The colors, the patterns, the vignette shapes all played into the showroom concept. We added accent colors like avocado green and harvest orange that were often used during that time period. At times, it kind of feels like you are in The Dating Game or The Price Is Right.
Are you carrying any new products you’re getting particularly excited about?
Last year we introduced the Art Piece, which uses our signature metal wire material formed into separate pieces for a flexible arrangement. This interactive design allows you to arrange the pieces any way you’d like to create your own unique arrangement for your walls. This year we took the Art Piece a step further and made it the Macramé Art Piece inspired by the bright colors and wild patterns that shaped 70s art. We hand crafted macramé yarn into the Art Piece. Made locally right here in Los Angeles, each unique design combines our Modular Art Piece with elegantly woven yarn, giving it that genuine look of craftsmanship.
What’s been a consistent best seller?
Our most popular range in our collection is the Lucy Side Chair and her Bar and Counter Stools. Our Lucy Chair is definitely our most recognizable design and has been used in restaurants and contract applications all over the world. The only change that we continually make to her is the colors that she is available in. She comes in a variety of powder coated colors, metallic finishes (we just added chrome), and also we can make her in a custom color.
Are there any special events, exhibits, pop ups or collaborations coming up?
We just had our showroom opening party, which was a great success with over 200+ people attending. It was a lot of fun! (Note from Design Milk: We agree! If you were following our Instagram Stories over on @designmilk, you now know that Bend Goods knows how to throw a party!) We will continue to have events in the showroom as we want to make it into a community space where artist can exhibit, have performances, design talks and special dinners. In December, we are planning a holiday market where we will invite other vendors for consumers to purchase gifts for their friends and family.
Do you have anything from the store in your own home?
I have a bunch of things that are Bend in my home. My favorite is actually the Stick stool. It’s a simple stool with a slender base and backless seat that can be easily tucked away under any counter.
You founded Bend Goods in 2010. How has your business evolved over the last eight years?
Consumers buying habits have changed. They want convenience and want to make purchases immediately, which is why we hold stock at our warehouse for quick ship. We have heavily invested on improving our online presence from our website to social media. In the beginning social media was not even something we had time to concentrate on. Now it’s a big part of our marketing strategy. In the future, we see people buying directly from an outlet like Instagram.
The design industry has also changed a lot. There are a lot more people trying to copy what we do, so it can be frustrating to see but the only way for us to continue to grow is to make unique, interesting products.
What does opening your first showroom mean to you and your business?
Opening a showroom / studio space is probably one of the biggest accomplishments for Bend. It carries lots of responsibility because we want it to have a positive impact to the community. We want to really utilize the space and hold special events such as a classical pianist performance, electronic sound baths, design talks, special dinner events, or even yoga classes.
For my team, the showroom is a place for us to experiment and be creative. We will use it to take pictures, make videos, meet clients and prototype new product designs.
For the consumer, our goal is to create a fun experience when you walk into the space and get inspired. We will show people different ways the product could be used. Consumers can test how comfortable and sturdy it is… putting their feet up, maybe even reading a magazine or having a drink while they’re relaxing.
What’s one lesson you’ve learned since opening your store?
We are still trying to figure this out. We call it more of a showroom / studio space rather than a store. We all know that the face of retail has changed and people do more of their purchasing online than ever before and a brick and mortar store is less relevant. We are treating our new showroom / studio space as an extension of our online social media and website. When people walk into our store, we want them to experience that online world we have created over the last eight years and turn it into a tangible physical world. Make it friendly, and a fun inviting environment.
If you could give one piece of advice to someone who wants to follow a similar path to yours, what would it be?
If you have an idea you are excited about, just work on it. Start small. Be passionate about it. Every day you will add something to building your vision and eventually, all the little things add up and become something bigger than you could have ever imagined. The very essence of entrepreneurship is a trial and error process.
Check out Bend Goods’ new showroom the next time you’re in town at 7007 Melrose Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90038 and visit them online at bendgoods.com.

8) Wendigo
This video production agency may get its name from a spooky folk creature, but the quality of their business card design is far from terrifying. Designed by the talented folks at The Distillery, these unusual cards put the focus on meticulously detailed, embossed illustration: a feather, a piece of wood, and a beastly skull can be seen behind the contact information. A pair of interlocking antlers -- presumably from the feared Wendigo itself -- form the "W" in the agency's name.

Illustrator and graphic designer Katsy Garcia whipped up this simple but effective business card concept for her own personal branding. Music Logo Designs: Gallery, Tips, and Best Practices
Have you ever created a music logo design? Even if you see cool music logos every now and then, it doesn’t mean it is easy to create one.
Marketing and branding are constantly changing, especially in the musical industry.
Digital music has changed the way the industry connects with listeners, and you will find that social media is actually the new game changer.
You can remember, for example, Justin Bieber getting his big break from his YouTube videos.
Video marketing, specifically, has somehow served as a replacement to MTV music videos. The videos were actually our first music ads, but today new artists are commonly found on videos that are shared on social media. To make a mark here, you need a call signal, which is better known as a music logo.
Any artist knows that music logos are the most important visual aspect, and the power of a good music logo should never be underestimated. If you have a good music logo design, it’ll last you a lifetime, and it may also make a good profit through merchandise.
The benefits of music company logos
If your goal is to create a connection on social media, you should have unique music logo ideas. This should be an image that will reflect your company across the board, and you will need it for anything from your YouTube thumbnail, to your other social media profile images.
These logos are the key to online branding, and it should give your users, or listeners, an overall feel for the company. From the graphics and color, to the vibe, it should represent your business well. This applies for music apps logos, music store logos, music label logos, and any other cool music logos you may think of, so be careful.
Using logos for a music business
How you use your music logo is a pretty big deal when discussing thumbnails and social media profiles. It basically introduces your business before a consumer actually listens to it, or takes any further steps in connecting.
Regardless of whether you want musicians to buy instruments, or trying to attract new talent, or anything else, the first symbol they’ll see is your logo. To put it shortly, you have to do your best with your logo.
The logo is a pretty big selling point, as it gives your fans a graphic representation. You’ll be putting it on your merch, albums, website, everywhere. You do know this already, so let’s see how you can create a memorable logo.
A style guide
From freelance illustrators, to designers, photographers and small businesses, as well as multi-national corporations, they would all benefit from a style guide. That is a document that puts down some rules for applying their brand assets, such as the logos, colors and fonts.
The primary purpose of this document is to give others a guidance as to how the company’s branding is to be used when they want to create anything from a business card to a website, basically anything that will visually represent the business.
Even if your company only has one employee (yes, you), a style guide will help you regarding how you can tie together all the ways you present yourself visually, and help you create your brand identity in the process. Regardless of the scale of the business, a style guide will have a pretty practical purpose, and is also very fun to do as well.
Why do you need one?
You may be wondering why you’ll need something that will put restraints on how creative you can get. Well, designers usually fall into two camps.
If you work for an agency, or as a freelancer, you’ll be used to working within the restraints of the guidelines of your clients, but you may feel like you have a bit more freedom for your everyday work.
The client may outsource to get a different perspective, which may result in them lifting the restraints a little, to reap the benefits of the creative insight they just got.
After all, big clients tend to have an in-house design team, people whose jobs revolve around sticking to that style guide, and creating company materials that live up to a certain standard.
There’s where the second camp comes in – designers that work in-house, for one business or organization exclusively.
The first camp may feel sorry for the second camp, because they may feel like they don’t get enough creative work.
While this may be true for some in-house design teams, for others, this isn’t really the case. The deciding factor here is the brand guidelines of the employer.
If you have a successful style guide, it will channel creativity, instead of restraining it. Which leads us to a single statement, which you should stick to if you want a good style guide. A style guide should merely guide creativity, and never restrain it. There are a few situations that adhere to this motto, and you can use them as guidelines on building your style guide.
The building blocks
Rome wasn’t built in a day, and brand guidelines aren’t that different from that perspective. It all takes a bit of work, and how much it takes is up to you. Below you’ll find guidelines for the essentials, but how much you want to follow and stick to them is completely up to you.
Keep it simple when designing a music logo
Minimalism isn’t just a method of design, it something that ensures longevity throughout your career. For example, the Beatles logo is just black text, but the font is instantly recognizable, and has worked throughout their entire careers. A lot of artists are tempted at throwing designs, colors, shapes etc., but you should be careful, and keeping things simple is pretty effective.
Choose color carefully for a music logo
Colors can evoke emotion, so you should be careful. If you don’t want to stick with neutrals, make sure it isn’t something too loud, or a hue that doesn’t really work with your brand’s voice. Fewer colors will also save on printing costs as well. And, be subtle with the color. Even if you use it in just a few places, such as a letter or a symbol, that can make a huge impact.
Versatility is very important
Great logos tend to come with two pieces. One is the logo, the complete one, and the other is an icon that you can use by itself. For example, the Nike logo is the check, and “Nike” below it, but you will also recognize the “swoosh” by itself.
When you’re creating a logo, make an image that you can either use as a complete symbol, and you can break down without it losing the meaning.
Typography matters in music logo designs
Your logo will most likely consist of text and subtle images. Therefore, you should indeed be picky about the typeface. If you want a classic feel, go with serif fonts. If you want a clean look, go for sans serif fonts. For example, Pixar and Apple’s serif fonts give a regal, classic vibe.
A bold band image for a music logo
What does your band stand for, and what do you want to send to your band as a message? The logo should communicate both of these things. For example, we can take a look at The Rolling Stones’ logo.
Millions of fans will recognize the shiny red mouth and the red tongue sticking out. It is known as “Hot Lips”, and was drawn in 1969 by a 24-year-old student. How much he charged for it? 50 pounds.
He was a student at London’s Royal College of Art, and was inspired by Mick Jagger’s mouth, and the Hindu goddess, Kali. The logo first appeared on the Sticky Fingers LP in 1971, and it was instantly a fan favorite, being used decades later.
An iconic, professional image
You may be coming up with a whole range of services and products that are music related. Your brand is more business, and less performer. In this situation, you’re best off with one iconic logo image, which you can just tweak for each branch.
Universal Music Group and Universal Studios are good examples, as they deal with different sectors, but you’ll see that they are actually visually linked with their logos.
Both of them share the image of a globe which has North and South America. The Universal Studios logo is usually seen in full color on a black background, but the Universal Music Group logo is usually a sketched version, in black and white instead.
Simple, yet spot on
If you want to make a music service or app, take a look at the logos of some popular ones, such as Pandora or Slacker Radio.
They usually keep things simple, and play around with fonts and colors. Pandora is a great example, and the particular shade of blue reminds of their brand immediately.
Napster, for example, has a logo of a catlike face, and the outline of headphones on its head. The logo is also sometimes found in thick, blue lines, and the cat’s eyes are in green. Spotify is another alternative, with the green circle and three curved lines. The lines represent wireless streaming or sound waves.
You can get inspiration everywhere
Thinking outside the box is actually accepted and appreciated. Music logo design inspirations can be found from a person, place, song or an object. Just grab an idea, and play around with it, you’ll be surprised.
You can experiment with images, colors, shapes and fonts, until you get the look you want, and the look that will convey your message. Once you have it, you’ll see your brand taking off with the audience.
Get inspiration from the lyrics
Feeling stuck? Look to your lyrics for the answer. Is there a particular line in your biggest hit, one that fans scream out along with you at concerts? Use it to improve your design.
Get your own font
The font plays a huge role. Even if you decide you want to change up the colors or design later on, if you have a font that is your own, can help you a lot in keeping things consistent.
Most bands will want a custom font, especially with the growth of their fan base. However, if you can’t afford it, just make a few letters stand out. Make them a different shade, or make a design out of them, the possibilities are endless.
Carefully choose colors
The colors tend to say a lot about the type of music people can listen to from your band. Heavy metal goes well with blacks, silvers and reds, and if the music is easy and relaxing, greens and blues are the way to go. However, make sure you have at least two colors, especially If you’ll be wearing your own merch onstage.
Your genre can be your guide
If you’re a classical music band, having a logo with neon hues or raining glitter isn’t that much of a good idea. But, if you make electronic music, such as techno, that’s amazing. Make sure that your design correlates with the type of music you play. And, if you’ve changed your sound recently, your logo might be in for a redesign as well.
Your fans can help
Want to show your fans you appreciate their opinion? Let them influence the music logo design. You can do this with anything from them voting on the final options, to them helping you create images, or you can get feedback from dropping subtle hints about the upcoming logo reveal on social media.
You should remember that these are the people that will wear your logo, and you have to make them happy.
Ending thoughts on music logo design
The aforementioned logos and ideas are very successful at presenting what they stand for, and spending some time to study what makes them so good, is actually well worth it.
The logo is actually the visual identity that makes your audience aware of your services. Give the above a good read!

Interview/Home & Design Trends/September 2017
1. Could you tell us about your first tryst with design? What got you interested in the field of architecture and interior design? Growing up in boarding school in the 80s, I remember vividly my summer vacations with my grandparents in Trivandrum and our drives down to Kovalam to visit the beach. These trips almost always included fried fish at the Kovalam Beach Resort and a dip in that amazing pool from where one saw the beaches below and the vast horizon beyond. This building was my introduction to Mr. Correa and modern Indian Architecture. Unlike anything I had seen before and yet familiar, obvious and in some sense inevitable - a series of terraces on a hill from where to survey the oceans. Moving from the intimate, nestled interior embedded in the rock, a place of refuge; out to the brazen, sun drenched terrace, a place of prospect. But this isn’t to say that I was interested in pursuing architecture from a young age. I got into architectural school purely on the advice of my school warden, Bro. George Kalangod, who in all his wisdom saw potential in my talents in drawing, physics and performance!
2. How would you describe your design style/the design philosophy of Hundredhands? We are not really trying to establish a unique /signature style. Our responses are the result of the myriad influences we encounter along the way in the life of a project. Clients, contractors and our own staff impact the work fundamentally. Having said that, we are deeply influenced by the work of Allies and Morrison and identify with their pragmatic, restrained approach to the work. We had the great good fortune of working with Graham Morrison and his team on a hotel in Bangalore and it was a wonderful lesson in assimilating complex program and service requirements and creating something which seemed effortless. This is a style we would like to pursue - of the obvious, the inevitable and the graceful or as Graham calls it, an architecture without adjectives!
4. How do you and Sunitha artfully meld your individual design sensibilities? We usually try and stay out of each other’s way! I mostly work on the schematics and design development, and Suni usually handles the detailed design (articulation, specifications, etc.) and supervises work at site. She brings in life and character to our work...if it were just me we would have a portfolio of mostly white boxes!
5. What does the name ‘Hundredhands’ signify? My brother Premjit, gave us this name. It stands for collaborative work. As architects we rely on a large group of people working together to create something of value. We reject the idea of the inspired individual who presides over the making of architecture and embrace instead the idea of a collective, shared authorship of the work.
6. Could you tell us about your first project for Hope Foundation and how it set the tone for your firm? The Centre of Hope in Trichy was one of eight buildings we did with Hope Foundation from 2003-2009. We worked with Mark Templar, Ian Correa, Samuel Thomas and Gimms Andrews from Hope, a wonderful set of local contractors - M. Manimaran and N. Ramesh and a great engineer, M. Rajendran. These were nice buildings to do with some incredibly committed people. Someone from Hope would call with their requirements (say 8 classrooms), a budget and a date. We would rarely meet the clients again till the building was done. As long as we gave them the rooms they needed within the budget we were free to try anything! We got a lot of support from these local contractors who were mostly responsible for the many alternative building techniques we used to address the heat and the cost.
Given that all these buildings were built within very limited budgets (on an average around Rs.700/sft) we were forced to consider what was truly indispensable - settling often for a careful articulation of structure and choice of materials to establish the aesthetic of these buildings. In hindsight, these early projects have informed our practice in fundamental ways. We continue to approach our work with a certain pragmatism and resist the ever-present temptation to be willful or capricious.
7. Do you believe your design facilitates change? If so, how? Our projects for Hope Foundation were all built to accommodate change over time. Areas in the plan were left incomplete, extensions of the corridors to be filled in when there was more money, and more children. Basic services were left in place to make these changes simple to incorporate. Neev Primary School, a recently completed project in Bangalore has only 50% of its area within closed rooms - the rest of the area is left undefined, of varying scales (in plan and section) to accommodate a rich variety of functions over the course of the year. The main central space serves as a place for exhibitions, group activities, assembly, table tennis, etc. The building also has, like the Hope schools, terraces and empty alcoves, which over time will get appropriated for the growing number of uses the school will need to house.
8. What do you believe is the best way to bring the human touch into architecture and design? The best way to bring in the human touch is probably to experience as much of the world as possible - to travel, meet people, expose oneself to other cultures. In some sense working in architecture is like working on oneself...recognizing our own humanity and our connections to others...and designing buildings can be a profound act of empathy, of understanding - capturing both the essential nature of the project - its specific condition, but also giving presence to ‘deep structure’, as Mr. Charles Correa called it - the instantly recognizable primordial essence - that immediate connection one feels in places like Modhera - recalling our shared human history.
9. Could you tell us a little about the kind of projects/architects that interest you in the current design scenario (India or international)? I am interested in producing work that is subtle, simple and ordered. Having said that, I am beginning to see a lot of projects where none of these qualities exist - they are a collage, or a seemingly random assemblage of elements, and some of these show an incredible vitality...Some of the more sophisticated potpourries carry that elusive quality of being of a (very particular) place and more importantly of a (very particular) time...and this I think is the fundamental shift in the way we have been thinking about our work. Much of this new work is not really preoccupied by notions of longevity, timelessness, etc. They revel in their transience, in there fleeting presence - soon to be replaced by the next new thing. This is a fundamental shift for me - but is incredibly interesting...and I wonder what it really means to think of our work as ephemera...
10. How important is it for you to create hand drawn sketches in your design process? How does it impact your final design? We had a wonderful teacher, Mr. Anil Dube, who really helped me appreciate the value of drawing. We made incredible building construction plates for him and he always showed us new ways to represent things. We do not consider this as important enough. A good representation reveals one’s intentions and often furthers the process of design. Drawing well (whether by hand or using a computer) is key to conveying to oneself and others the value of one’s propositions.
I also find that in drawing again and again, solutions and alternatives magically reveal themselves. My experience at the Glenn Murcutt Masterclass was an affirmation of this. In simply recording/documenting/drawing exhaustively the existing condition, one begins to see patterns and discovers the way to occupy/shape the landscape.
11. How have your sketches evolved over time? From being representational, I have been trying to get my sketches to be more abstract, trying to somehow capture the trace of movement and change over time. In most cases this means the drawings are becoming quite indecipherable even to me!
12. A design tool that you are partial to? Drawing and model making.
13. What are some core factors you focus on, when designing within the existing systems in Indian cities? Existing systems I assume to mean, our own very convoluted way of doing things...The incredibly high cost of land and the abysmally low cost of construction, the strange blanket bye laws our cities have and their completely flexible nature, the casual relationship clients and their ‘well wishers’ have with the architect, the consultants and the contractors, the role of vastu shastra and its rather fluid interpretations, the often ambiguous extent of the land our clients actually own, etc. In these conditions one should ideally focus on slipping in some quiet subversion into the projects...
14. What are some of the major challenges that you have faced with architecture in India, and how have you overcome them? On the other hand, what are some architectural opportunities this country offers? Working in India is still a fairly labour intensive affair. Most of our buildings are built with reinforced concrete frames and masonry infills. Construction costs tend to be among the lowest in the world averaging around Rs.2,000/sft. ($30/sft). One of the things this results in is a rather casual approach to the design phase of the work, and the belief that things can always be ‘improved’ at site. And so though we do make copious number of drawings and study models before things hit the site, we are often ‘re-designing’ things right upto the end of construction.
An essential skill for an architect in India is the ability to constantly incorporate changes, either in terms of the brief or in terms of innovative or ‘tried and tested’ improvements suggested by the client, his extended family or the contractor. It is always amazing to see some trace of the initial ideas surviving till the end. Having said that there is a joy in this rich negotiated outcome...in the best cases the work truly is the result of an active collaboration. The bad cases we don’t show anyone!
The great opportunity in India is the easy access one has to hand made, customised/bespoke production. After working in the US - picking stuff out of the Sweet’s Catalogues, the opportunity to work with sophisticated carpenters, fabricators and craftsmen is an incredible rush.
15. Amidst the architecture and interior design projects, how did film come into the picture? How was the experience working on Doshi? In 2008, my brother Premjit Ramachandran came back to India after many years abroad and working on a project with him, I thought, would be a good way for us to reconnect, and working with Dr. Doshi, would give both of us a wonderful excuse to hang out with him. Our time with Dr. Doshi, making the film, has had a profound impact on the way we see the world.
We called Dr. Doshi on a Friday and were in Ahmedabad without a camera or any equipment on Monday to begin shooting! Scrambling around for equipment we finally got to Sangath at around 11 and immediately began recording - no script, no plan. In some sense this spontaneous way of working produced conversations of rare candour and I think our film is valuable because of this. Premjit shot, edited and wrote the score for the film.
You can see more of his films here: https://vimeo.com/hinterland
16. Could you tell us about some current projects you are working on? We are currently working on a couple of schools, a public building, two single-family homes and some office interiors, all in Bangalore, and have begun collecting information and conducting a few interviews for another film on an architect here in Bangalore.
